VIDEO: Volt center stack to come in dark grey or white

As our man Chris Paukert was perusing the videos about the pre-production Volt build process the other day, he noticed a slight change in the interior from what we have seen previously. When the "production" Volt design was unveiled last September, the center stack was finished in very iPod-esque white plastic with touch sensitive controls. The IVER prototype shown in the video has a dark grey finish which we haven't seen before in a Volt.
We checked with GM spokesman Dave Darovitz and he confirmed that the production Volt will be available in both white and this new dark grey metallic finish. According to Darovitz the grey actually "looks black in person," presumably when it isn't bathed in camera lights. Another change you might note is that the screen at the top of the stack is now fixed in place rather than a pop-up like the concept. The new dash shows up about 25 seconds into the video after the jump.

I really like the dark gray. Has there been any announcements from GM regarding the EV range in cold temperatures when the heat is running?

The closest there's been was a report from the "Cruze" body mule, where they did 19 miles in 30 degree weather at highway speeds. The battery was only at 60% charge though, since they wanted to see the generator in action. In theory, they should have gotten around 24 miles.
Keep in mind though, the cruze has the wrong aerodynamics and wheels, and probably weighs more than the Volt, so it shouldn't have the same performance as the Volt.
why not the LS2LS7? 4:15PM (8/04/2009)
Are those real buttons? I need real buttons, not just a touch panel. Touch buttons suck because when you're feeling around for the buttons you accidentally activate other ones.

You beat me to it. On an iphone or whatever, touch is fine, but when I'm driving I need to be able to turn down the volume on my music or turn the heater up without taking my eyes off the road.

ewww. Where's the contrast? Do a silver or black finish, but that grey is too close to the dash grey it looks lame now.

Agreed,lame looking.
How about a two toned and brushed aluminum/black anodized in matte finish?

How about a nice dashboard designed by committee? We're all experts here!

Well, we technically do own GM now--the commune must make decisions together ;-)

That shiny plastic looks cheap. I hate it and hope they change it.

you can also see the fuel door has been moved from the back, where a traditional car might have it, to the front adjacent to the electrical charge port (:49). smart!

I was surprised when I read your comment because, like you, I think that'd be pretty foolish, regardless of supposed safeguards introduced to minimize combustion. As many have mentioned in other stories, gasoline fumes are really heavy and have a tendency to "hang around" rather than disburse/dilute in the surrounding air.
However, if you look at 1:07-ish, you can see the real fuel door on the passenger side rear fender.
BTW: Early in my career, I asked why fuel doors seem to be, more and more often, on the passenger side (versus the driver side, where it would seem to be more convenient) and was told (remember, this is the late-80s) that engineers were concerned about static electricity from interior textiles and preferred drivers to ground themselves in the walk around the car...
