Hyundai plans to launch its first-ever hybrid in America, based on the next-generation Sonata midsize sedan, in late 2010. As we can see from this series of spy shots, testing is well underway as the Korean automaker was spotted out and about in the desert with a heavily camoflauged 2011 Sonata Hybrid - and there were hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima in tow.Hyundai has taken a slightly different approach to energy storage, using flat lithium polymer battery packs holding 5.3 Ah of capacity at 270 volts in lieu of nickel metal hydride or lithium ion technology. Expect the hybrid bits to add 30kW of power to Hyundai's 2.4-liter Theta II four cylinder powerplant mated up with a six-speed automatic transmission. A quick glance underhood shows the telltale bright orange wiring normally associated with hybrid automobiles.
A closer look at the spy photos shows that Hyundai will apply the currently-popular four-door coupe trend to its next Sonata. We also clearly note radically sweeping headlamps that stretch all the way past the front wheel arches, a rising bodyside ridge and a vaguely Genesis-esque front grille treatment. Expect all of these styling elements on both the standard 2011 Sonata and its accompanying hybrid sibling.

Nice. How about a price? That wasn't posted on the windshield for us?

No, no... that's not camo, that's actually the final design. Notice the duct tape holding it together, the hallmark of any good Hyundai.
Just kidding, I like all manufacturers in my state, especially Hyundai. How can you not like that name?

Interesting stuff.
If the koreans could raise their mpg figures then I would probably look very hard at them for the next commuter.
If I had to go today... I probably stick with toyota or honda.
That's for me.. for my usage.
If my situation changed then I might rethink all that.

I had read that the next Sonata would have a DI 2.4 liter with 200 hp and 10% improvement in mileage. I wonder if DI will make it to the hybrid. As far as I know, no existing hybrid uses DI.

Interesting to see Hyundai opting for a Li-ion battery pack.. on a Full blown Sedan.
This will definitely raise the stakes for other manufacturers. Esp Toyota and Honda,
Honda doesnt have a proper Hybrid line up in their Mid size and upper segment vehicles which sucks !! .. looks like the Green stuff is really heating competition..

Hyundai/kia were developing their own batteries for hybrid cars, and jap. manufacturer tried to sell their own batteries. Hyundai/kia said no, and jap pretty much threatened them by telling them they'll never sell them a single set of battery. H/K succeeded with developing their own battery and now jap still trying to sell their batteries for a lot cheaper.
IDiots.
