Frankfurt Preview: Lexus shrinking luxury into Premium Compact Concept
Lexus Premium Compact concept teaser – Click above for high-res image
One of the hallmarks of major auto shows is the teases and the hints that automakers dole out in the weeks (sometimes months) before the orchestrated unveilings under the bright lights. Lexus isn't saying much about a new "Premium Compact Concept" that will bow at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month other than, well, it's compact, which we assume means it'll be more efficient than something like the RX 450h. Lexus is also saying that the concept car "will demonstrate a mix of technical innovation and ground-breaking design that promises to raise the bar in the premium compact segment," which we're thinking means hybrid drivetrain. Could it also wear the CT name? We'll know more on September 15.

About time. With only a few exceptions the choice has been an economy class fuel efficient car or a nicer car with lousy fuel economy. Acura started in that direction with the Integra, but in my opinion, did not do enough to separate it from its Honda Civic look. I don't think that the recent enlargement and adding cylinders to the TSX was the right direction to go.

I swear, in five years time, all concept cars are going to be sporting three foot diameter wheels and have a cylon eye slit to see out of.

I was thinking the same thing, wheels that big just look stupid, IMHO of course. And, a car that looks like that will never make it to production so why waste the labor hours even drawing it.

Because artists who make concept cars have fetishized wheels into some kind of sex object like boobs or biceps or something.

I need something Miata sized with an efficient drive train, this might fit the bill if it doesn't have any ridiculous body work.
