Gran Turismo 5 may let you damage a Tesla Roadster to your heart's content
Gran Turismo 5 damage rendering - Click above to watch video on Autoblog
Big budget racing games like Gran Turismo 5 need to continuously up the ante to keep gamers pretending they're driving some of the world's more powerful cars on courses around the globe. The latest, most dramatic addition to GT5 will be damage rendering, which isn't exactly new to video race games, but still has our friends over at Autoblog pretty excited. We're more interested in the fact that the 1,000 or so cars available to drive in the game includes not only includes hybrids like the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight, but also "the latest Tesla model." Whether this means the Roadster or Roadster Sport or the Model S, we're waiting to find out. We're also not sure if any of these vehicles have the damage rendering work done to them, since only some of the 1,000 cars got the special treatment. What we do know is that the physics engine will make these cars perform in the game the way they do in real life. So, if you haven't spent time behind the wheel of a Tesla, this should offer an enjoyable substitute. You can even scrape the paint a bit and no one will complain.
The Roadster was previously featured in the video game Project Gotham Racing 4, something that was apparently quite a joy to behold.

I have mixed feelings about damage in Gran Turismo. On one hand it can add to the reality of an already very good driving simulator; on the other, it could make the game virtually impossible (since the computer doesn't mind putting you into the wall). This is not like other racing games, I just hope damage is an option.

I used to love playing GT3 because it had no damage, you could come into the corner "hot" and slam into the car in front of you to slow down. That car would go flying into the wall and you would quickly make the turn and be back on the accelerator.
I also loved the souped up 4x4 dune buggy you got after winning all the rally car races. When you punched the gas and went flying over hills it would jump so high it would bump into the sky texture.
It is really hard to drive a real car like normal after playing GT for 3-4 hours.
One night driving home after playing I didn't slow down enough for a right turn at a stop light and got pulled over by the cops...

Of course, the problem with the upcoming GT5 and the current GT5:P is that with online racing, people like yourself see no problem in using other people, rather than the AI, to slam out of the way and continue on their merry way. Which is irritating, to understate the matter.
If damage is used in conjunction with private rooms on GT5 as many hope, then the "clean" racers will find great racing and have an incentive not to damage their cars, and the punters will quickly find they have nobody to race against as they'll have been banned from everyone else's races. Perhaps then they'll get bored and go back to playing Need For Speed...
