Spy shots: Ford Fiesta sedan spotted in Mexico with plug; it's not an EV!

With the new North American market Ford Fiesta set to launch production in Mexico in just a few months, it's no surprise that someone spotted one running around near Mexico City. In this case, the car that was seen is the sedan version which is likely to comprise most U.S. sales. However, Automovil, which published these pics, saw an electric cord sticking out of the lower grille and is speculating that this is an electrified version of the Fiesta and claiming that it was operating silently. Until now however, Ford has never given any indication that it is working on an electric Fiesta. It's upcoming passenger car EV is based on the new Focus platform. We checked with Ford spokespeople Alan Hall and Jennifer Moore (who specifically works on sustainability communications) and both told us that there is no work ongoing on an electric Fiesta. Since the plug is just a standard 110V three prong unit, this is almost certainly just a block heater. While a heater wouldn't be needed in Mexico in the summer, this prototype, like others, has probably seen service in cold weather regions at other times. As for the silence, Ford has said almost all of its cars will have automatic start-stop capability in the next few years and the Fiesta is expected to be one of the first so equipped. Hmm, I wonder if I could convince "idiots" that my suv is an EV. It has a plug too.

Maybe you should zip tie a 3 ft extension cord on it that should do it. Leave the plug out where it can be seen and the other end unseen leading to the inside of the engine compartment. That's what I should do at out next OEVA meeting to my 4-door, 4wh dr, PU and see if I can fool any members. Better yet do it to my Corvette.
Back on topic of this car sighted in Mexico I just wanted to say the same thing that Nelson character on the Simpson's says. "Hah, Ha".
