Meet the Luis: a Chinese-German EV for under €12,000

German company Luis has announced that its Luis Free EV is now on sale for less than €12,000. The car, which is built in China by a non-disclosed partner, can be ordered with two different power outputs: 5.5 kW and 8 kW under the fiberglass bodywork. The low-power model, which reaches a maximum speed of 60 km/h (40 mph) is classified as a NEV. The second, with a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50mph), requires a standard driver's license to operate. Seating four, the Luis Free EV has a declared range of about 200 km (120 miles) although the battery technology hasn't been disclosed. Luis claims that the car can be charged up to 80 percent in a normal household outlet in about two hours, reaching full capacity in five hours.

Not bad, I hope they can boost the KWs a bit as a top speed of 50mph isn't much (isn't bad), but the price is very good.

The price isn't all that great for a NEV, and they've got plenty of competition. Now, if they had a reliable freeway capable EV for twice that price, that might be reason to celebrate.

Dear Lord!
Not another Chinese-Daewoo-Matiz-Clone -based EV!
Wasn't the Xebra enough?
They're going to have to do a lot of work to make that thing comply with modern safety standards.

Could work very well here in Malta given it's got good suspension...
Maximum speed is 70 kmh any ways and you can't really go 200 km...

The safety is a concern for me as well, but it would work well here in the city (Granada, Spain). Spain has lots of those miniature cars (

40-50mph makes is useful for all city driving... big improvement over most NEVs. Still waiting to see what that Canadian company does with their EV and those vaporwareish ultracaps....

120 miles with an 8kWh pack? that is 15 miles per kWh... dubious unless the mass of the car, including batteries is like 350 kg (about as heavy as a Harley-Davidson).

Wait... good suspension? Are we talking about the same car here?
Most Chinese Matiz clones have shocks that go south at... oh... around 1000 miles... after which nothing is holding the suspension together except the springs.
