Fiat now the lowest CO2 emitter in Europe
While the Frankfurt Motor Show tries to present us with the future of motoring, the European Federation for Transport and Environment has taken stock of where automakers are today. Fiat and PSA Peugeot-Citroen came out with the lowest average CO2 emissions (138 and 139 grams/kilometer, respectively) while BMW and Mazda were the most improved (down 10.2 and 8.2 percent, respectively). Here are Europe's top ten manufacturers ranked by average 2008 CO2 emissions in g/km (2007 numbers in parenthesis):
- Fiat 138 (142)
- PSA Peugeot-Citroen 139 (142)
- Renault 143 (147)
- Toyota 147 (150)
- Hyundai 149 (161)
- Ford 152 (163)
- GM 153 (157)
- Honda 154 (172)
- BMW 154 (172)
- Suzuki 156 (172)

Of all the man-made CO2 in the atmosphere, less than 3% is produced by cars. Trying to stop global warming by reducing the CO2 emissions of cars is like trying to bail out the ocean with a 10 gallon bucket; pointless and idiotic. All the effort wasted on CO2 emissions of cars could be put into shutting down factories in China.

Ok CO2 from cars isn't much of a problem but there are more horrible things that come out of cars than CO2. If you truly wish to reduce CO2 stop eating meat, I have :)

"Of all the man-made CO2 in the atmosphere, less than 3% is produced by cars."
Could you quote your sources?
According to the European Environment Agency this figure is 14%, not 3%. For transport as a whole the figure was 28% in 2007. In the coming weeks the EU is set to enforce separate legislation for vans and trucks, so it may be that the 14% doesn't even include this category
"Transport is the worst performing sector under Kyoto and seriously jeopardises the achievement of the targets. Transport CO2 emissions in the EU grew by 35.6% between 1990 and 2007. Other sectors reduced their emissions by 8.9% over the same period. The share of transport in CO2 emissions was 21% in 1990, but by 2007 this had grown to 28%. The European Environment Agency estimates that cars are responsible for 14% of CO2 emissions."

Actually this wasn't the topic of my tip a all! These figures have already been out for months.
My tip was about the year-to-date figures for 2009 posted here:
"Fiat emissions lowest in Europe"
http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Fiat-Punto/243394/
This article isn't about 2007 or 2008 figures, but data for January 2009 to June 2009:
Europe's top ten manufacturers for low CO2 emissions:
1. Fiat - 129.1 g/km
2. Toyota - 132.9 g/km
3. Peugeot 134.5 g/km
4. Citroen - 138.1 g/km
5. Renault - 138.9 g/km
6. Ford - 140.4 g/km
7. Opel/Vauxhall - 149.5 g/km
8. VW - 152.5 g/km
9. Audi - 162.6 g/km
10. 178.8 g/km
This would mean that, compared with 2007 and 2008, the big change is that Toyota has overtaken Peugeot.
