Rumormill: Best Buy to sell Aptera 2e?
Aptera 2e - Click above for high-res image gallery
Might Best Buy begin offering the Aptera 2e when the vehicle is finally ready for sale at some unknown time in the future? Possibly. Though the video has since been removed from YouTube, some sort of promotional material from the big box retailer highlighting electric vehicles reportedly featured at least two separate cars from Aptera.
Further, the idea of selling electric vehicles at Best Buy locations isn't something new. In fact, selected locations scattered along the West Coast are already selling the Brammo Enertia electric motorcycle. Further, rumors abound that Best Buy will soon offer more electric two-wheelers, including Segways and bicycles.
So, is this a good idea or bad idea? Would you consider purchasing an Aptera 2e from Best Buy? It's certainly a large purchase and there are obvious questions as to how the vehicle will be serviced, but having the space-age car available at such a large and well-known location might add to its credibility. What say you? Thanks to all who sent this in!

If i could afford it, I'd buy it wherever I could.

Or to quote The great Tim; I'd get it from Best Buy if those facists wouldn't force me to pay for it!

Actually Satan,
I'd freely CHOOST to buy it from Best Buy (or anywhere else allowed by gov't) and I would NOT expect you to pay for it, regulate it or FORCE me to buy it.
I feel sorry for you, comrade because you really don't know what liberty or personal responsibility actually is. (I blame gov't schools with their progressive indoctrinators.)
Yes, the comforting hand of big brother pats you on the head every morning and says: "Good sheeple, good sheeple. Do what I say, not what I do."

Of course you "blame schools". Thats why all the people who sound like you are either uneducated idiots or rich corporate profiteers with a vested interest in getting fools like you to believe the easily disproven lies being spewed out by mouthpieces like Beck or Limbaugh. you just want everyone to be as dumb as you are.

I see that even sheeple have teeth.
No brain to read and study history and learn from the mistakes of others (Rome)
No courage to leave others alone
No heart to end the welfare state that makes NOBODY well and is NOT fair because it creates generations of people dependant upon the FORCED charity of others.
But they to have teeth and yet they are so easily sheared by power hungry corrupt politicians and the bankers they serve.
SUCKERS!

I was able to find the Best Buy Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fizCP9hv_58
It's a stretch for sure to imagine BBY selling the Aptera, but so was the concept of them selling an electric motorcycle. This will be pretty fun to watch, no doubt.

Its not THAT big a stretch. Best Buy gets some serious green cred and beats walmart (who is planning the same thing) to the punch. and Aptera gets a network of stores to sell and service their units at (they only need to pay for some specialized training for qualified mechanics).

It makes sense to try a new business model to sell electric cars, they are much less prone to breakdown because of fewer moving parts and they require much less regular maintenance.
The car dealership distribution model is full of inefficiency(hundreds of cars parked on lots) and should be streamlined so that cars are delivered as they are ordered. Using a retailer network like best buy will allow aptera to stay out of the dealership business and streamline distribution. Personally I prefer amazon.com or newegg.com.

I'm not so sure about that: After all, on my car everything that has required maintenance (shocks, air conditioning, window motor, alignment) are all things that would be on a EV.
polo 4:19PM (9/24/2009)
mike az, those are all "cheapo" repairs compared to major engine or transmission work, and also much less complicated to fix...as long as you don't go to a national chain that won't gouge yo

"The car dealership distribution model is full of inefficiency(hundreds of cars parked on lots) and should be streamlined so that cars are delivered as they are ordered."
Dealerships would love it if they only needed to keep a few models in stock, but the problem is that the consumers wouldn't stand for it. They want the car equipped the way they want it and they want to take delivery today.
Also, as Mike indicates, there's also more to a car than the motor. In fact, all significant repairs that I've done to my aging vehicles have had nothing to do with the motor. That's not to say that an EV isn't simpler. It is, but it's not Best Buy simple.

@nrb: that's how it is in the US. In some other countries, you order your car and it's delivered later. The only cars at the dealer are the demo cars and trade-ins. Of course a single dealer could not make that change, but a major change in how cars are sold might be an opportunity to change how all dealers stock inventory. It's all a matter of what people expect.

What's the benefit of replacing maintenance costs by battery depreciation, except to reduce blue collar jobs...

What is the benefit if moving from horse to car except reducing dung shoveler's jobs? What is your alternative Laurens, keep using oil?
polo 4:25PM (9/24/2009)
Aw Laurens, its sooo nice that you make sure to buy cars that need frequent expensive repairs just so the poor auto mechanics can pull a nice check....But most of us are more interested in lowering our own maintenance costs and keeping the resale value up, up up. Batteries do that, in fact, even when they no longer keep their full charge you can still sell them for a nice sum as the battery and its components are still very valuable.
Laurens 4:30PM (9/24/2009)
They will be worth nothing, since recycling is a pain in the ...! Maintenance on ICE cars is easy, the main components never need anything except "fresh oil". All other parts are also on EV's.
