New train-sponsored carpool system comes to Paris
SNCF, the public company that manages the French railway system, has launched a new carpool service. Aimed at people who live in the large Paris metropolitan area and use the commuter train system, Transilien, to go to work, the idea is to get more people to use fewer cars because most stations have insufficient parking space. Carpooling with strangers is dangerous and should be avoided.
You are putting your safety in the hands of a stranger. You don't know if the person's car is safe and well maintained. You don't know if the person is a safe driver. Public transit vehicles are inspected, your neighbor's car is not.
You are putting your trust in a stranger. You don't know if the person will leave you stranded one day. Or worst: verbally abuse you, rob you, stalk you, rape you.
Only get into a car with people that you know well and trust.

Your comments may be technically valid, but fortunately not everyone is that paranoid. Casual carpooling is practiced in many places successfully (some meeting their future spouses). For those that are concerned about the safety aspects, such an organized promotion system may help them hook up with people they do know.
