Auto X Prize to announce all teams "moving ahead in the competition" next week

The Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize has has a number of teams drop out recently (e.g., the Avion and the LincVolt), but the competition is not slowing down. Next week, in New York City, the AXP will formally announce the names of the teams that are "moving ahead in the competition." To tease us, the AXP has listed five of those teams in today's pre-announcement announcement: AMP Motorworks, which converts Saturn Skys to all-electric drive; Commuter Cars, which makes the Tango; Optamotive; the West Philly EVX Team and ZAP. These five teams will all have cars on hand when the list of all competing teams is released a week from today.

At that time, the AXP will also give more details about DASH+, the national high school contest that is part of the larger Prize. DASH+ asks students to "design the next generation dashboard that supports behavior change to help drivers maximize fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impact." Let's hope they do their homework and don't just copy the SmartGuage.

PRESS RELEASE:

Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Announces Teams Qualified to Compete for $10 Million and Launches National Student Contest

WHAT: The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, an international, multimillion dollar competition designed to inspire a new generation of viable, super-efficient vehicles is holding a press conference on Monday, October 19 to:

  • Announce the top teams moving ahead in the competition
  • Showcase a selection of competing teams and their pre-production vehicles including: AMP (Cincinnati, OH), Commuter Cars (Seattle, WA), Optamotive (San Jose, CA/Ottawa, CA), the West Philly EVX Team (Philadelphia, PA) and ZAP (Santa Rosa, CA)
  • Open registration for DASH+, the national high school contest of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Education Program, sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy that challenges high school students to design the next generation dashboard that supports behavior change to help drivers maximize fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

WHY: The goal of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE is to inspire a new generation of viable, super fuel-efficient vehicles that offer more consumer choices. Ten million dollars in prizes will be awarded to the teams that win a stage competition for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 miles per gallon or energy equivalent (MPGe). The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE will place a major focus on efficiency, safety, affordability, and the environment. It is about developing real, production-capable cars that consumers will want to buy, not science projects or concept cars. This progress is needed because today's oil consumption is unsustainable and because automotive emissions significantly contribute to global warming and climate change.

WHEN: Monday, October 19th

Press Conference: 11:00 a.m. EDT

Free public viewing of a selection of competing vehicles: 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m

WHERE: Manhattan Classic Car Club, 250 Hudson Street New York, NY 10016

(corner of Broome and Hudson, one block north of Canal Street.)

VISUALS: Five competing teams and their vehicles, along with an official from the U.S. Department of Energy; Glenn Renwick, Progressive Insurance President and CEO; Dr. Peter Diamandis, X PRIZE Foundation CEO and Chairman; Dale Fulton, Senior Vice President for Curriculum Development at Discovery Education and four high school teams registering for DASH+ will be in attendance and available to speak with media
