With more plug-in vehicles on the road now than in January 2009, the upcoming First National Plug In Day parade in Santa Monica, CA will be around three times the size of the parade held to celebrate the inauguration of President Obama (pictured). That event saw around 70 plug-in vehicles, while around 200 are scheduled to take part in the upcoming parade, which is just one of 20 events being planned across the country.

Sponsored by Plug In America, the Sierra Club and the Electric Auto Association, the National Plug In Day is being called the largest grassroots EV event in history, and we can't think of anything bigger to lay claim to that title. The idea, as is probably fairly obvious, is to "champion the benefits of EVs" and educate non-EV drivers through "tailpipe-free" tailgate parties and lectures. In Santa Monica, for example, director Chris Paine (of "Revenge of the Electric Car," which is scheduled for a nationwide release October 21st) will speak. Details of the Santa Monica event can be found after the jump and you can find a complete list of events (perhaps one near you) at Plug In America's website.

*UPDATE: Nissan chimes in with official support. See PR after the jump.

QUOTE: "Only a few years ago, major automakers were literally crushing electric cars. Today, virtually every auto company in the world is selling or developing a plug-in car, and consumers are snapping up each and every one, stimulating our economy while helping the environment. You'll see hundreds of these vehicles in National Plug In Day activities. And remember: EVs are powered by domestic electricity, so every cent we spend to run them stays in America," says Plug In America co-founder and Sierra Club member Paul Scott.
