Toyota Prius

More than one in every five Prius vehicles sold in the US is sold in California.

In California, the sun rises over the Eastern Sierras, sets over the Pacific and the Toyota Prius remains the most popular car around. The world's best selling family of hybrids moved 33,987 units in California during the first six months of the year, making the Prius the Golden State's most popular model, EV World says, citing the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA). Given that the Prius has sold about 120,000 domestic units through June, more than one in every five Prius vehicles sold in the US is sold in California.

Following the Prius in California is the Honda Civic and Honda Accord, each of which sold more than 31,000 units, and Toyota moved about 28,000 Camry models in the state. All told, the 59,000 new hybrids sold during the first half of the year in California totaled almost five times the number in the next most hybrid-hungry state.

Those numbers appear consistent with Toyota's claim in July that about six out of every 10 hybrids sold in California are Toyotas, outselling the Ford hybrids by a five-to-one margin. Last year, Toyota racked up almost 61,000 sales units of the four variants of the Prius in California, making it the state's best-selling hybrid.
