Keys and combinations are for your old man. Skylock brings your bike lock into the digital age, which actually is more exciting and practical than it sounds. This solar-powered U-lock claims to be "as strong as any lock on the market," and features levels of connectivity that add a lot of versatility to what used to just be a thing to keep your bike from getting nicked.
First and foremost, Skylock is basically keyless entry for your bicycle. It connects to your iOS or Android smartphone (and certain other devices) via Bluetooth or WiFi, and you can unlock it from the app, or you can set it to unlock by proximity. Simply approach your bike, and Skylock will have it ready for you. Did you accidentally drop your phone in the toilet? You can still access your bike by entering a code on the built-in touchpad. Also, a full charge lasts about a month, but should the battery run dry, you can charge it via USB.
Secondly, Skylock provides an extra layer of anti-theft protection. A built-in accelerometer will send an alert to your phone if anyone starts messing with your bike. The sensitivity is adjustable, so if you're locking your bike to a communal rack, you can keep it from sending a false alarm every time it gets jostled. Furthermore, it features a dual-locking design, so if it's beyond Bluetooth proximity and not logged into a WiFi network, you can still feel pretty safe leaving it unattended (a thief would have to cut the lock twice to free it). When riding, that same accelerometer can detect when you've taken a spill. It will send a message to your phone to ask if you're okay. If needed, the app can call for help if you've been injured, sort of like OnStar for your bike.

Finally - and this may be the coolest aspect of Skylock - it is set up for bikesharing. You can authorize anyone else with a smartphone to have access to your bike whenever you want.
Skylock will retail for $249, but a limited quantity is currently available for pre-order for $159 for a limited time. Shipping is slated for spring of 2015. Check out the video below for more information.
