Diesel power may still be the dominant force at the forefront of endurance sportscar racing centered around Le Mans, but this year sees a new form of propulsion on the field: hybrids.

Both Toyota and Audi are hitting the newly inaugurated World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans with hybrid propulsion that pairs a conventional, fossil-fuel-burning engine to an electric motor set-up that - like the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) used in Formula One - stores up energy from braking for redeployment under acceleration.

While embracing the hybrids, they've got regulators at the ACO and FIA a little concerned over their potential advantage. So rather than let the hybrid prototypes put their stored energy down anywhere they see fit, the officials are identifying specific zones on each track where the systems can be used.

At the 6 Hours of Spa in Belgium where the Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro made its race debut (finishing second only to its conventional counterpart, the R18 Ultra) there were five such zones. At the longer Circuit La Sarthe where Le Mans is held, organizers have identified seven zones - specifically Dunlop, Forza, Michelin, Mulsanne, Indianapolis, Porsche and Ford, for those up to speed (so to speak) on the names of each corner and chicane on the circuit.

The measure is not unlike those taken in F1, where the use of KERS is not limited, but specific straightaways are identified for each race where the Drag Reduction System (DRS) on the rear wing can be opened.
Le Mans places limits on new hybrid LMPs originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Sat, 02 Jun 2012 16:00:00 EST.
Tragedy is a relative concept. Some would call it a tragedy that, while Italy makes some of the most desirable (and gas-guzzling) cars on the market, it also has some of the highest fuel prices in Europe. But that unfortunate reality is far overshadowed by the two earthquakes that have struck the country's Emilia-Romagna region, killing 24 people in total. Now the fledgling government tasked with steering the troubled country into financial health is forced to raise fuel taxes even higher to relieve the aftermath of the disasters.

The move, recently approved by the government cabinet of Prime Minister Mario Monti (pictured above), will raise the price of gasoline by another two euro-cents per liter, further entrenching its dubious position holding the third highest prices in the world. Gas prices currently exceed the European average and the equivalent of $9.35 per gallon, representing over nine percent of daily income that Italians have to pay at the pump. Coupled with public funds previously earmarked towards combating Italy's rising deficit - currently the second largest in Europe - and freed up by Monti's government in a recent spending constriction, the cash brought from the fuel-tax increase will go towards relief efforts.

What remains unclear, however, is how Italians will continue paying such high tax rates when the disasters have, according to lobby group Coldiretti, cost farmers over 500 million euros (U.S. $621 million at current exchange rates), and manufacturers several hundred million more, according to Confindustria, the employers' union formerly headed by Ferrari president, former Fiat chairman and potential future premiership candidate Luca di Montezemolo.

Ferrari's was one of several automotive factories that temporarily ceased operations in the wake of the disaster, allowing its workers to tend to their own families. The Maranello-based company has since reopened its factory and is organizing a charity auction to help with the disaster-relief efforts.
Italy hikes gas taxes to raise money for earthquake relief originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 01 Jun 2012 10:01:00 EST.
There are two ways automakers can go when producing a vehicle with electric propulsion - be it a hybrid or an outright EV: make it look the same as any other car, or make it stand out. Like Toyota (for example) did with the Prius, Nissan made the Leaf look (for better or worse) unlike a conventional sedan. But while Toyota answered the call for more space with the equally "distinctive" Prius V, Nissan has gone a different route in producing a bigger brother for the Leaf.

That route is called the e-NV200, pictured above in concept form. And while the nose, unique shade of blue and electric powertrain are conceptually borrowed from the Leaf, the rest is nearly identical to the existing NV200 van that is being rolled out in New York as the city's new taxi of choice.

Nissan has just announced the production of the e-NV200, set to start next year at the same plant in Barcelona, Spain, as the conventionally-powered NV200. As a result, Nissan will hire 700 more workers at the plant and invest some €100 million (U.S. $126 million at today's exchange rates). Details like projected cost and annual capacity are not to be found in the press release below, but Nissan does say the electric van will be built starting some time in fiscal year 2013. That means some time before the end of March 2014.
Continue reading Nissan announces production of funky e-NV200 electric van

Nissan announces production of funky e-NV200 electric van originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 23 May 2012 13:58:00 EST.
Americans have our own ideas about what a police cruiser should be: big, fast, menacing. The kind of vehicle that you can't mistake pulling up behind you on the freeway, and with enough muscle to chase you down should your foot get a little heavier than it should. But overseas, police vehicles are a little more...timid. In Europe, law enforcement typically use smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. So why not a plug-in hybrid?

That's what Vauxhall is asking the British law enforcement community with the Ampera. The UK subsidiary of General Motors already provides an array of vehicles to police departments across the UK, but brought the hybrid - basically a Chevy Volt with different bodywork - to the Intelligent Transport Systems division of the Association of Chief Police Officers to show them how the PHEV could be prepared to serve as a police vehicle.

For the demonstration, Vauxhall equipped this Ampera with four external cameras, a facial recognition system, a police database interface built into the dashboard display and more. The police-spec model, says Vauxhall, could be ready to roll into police motorcades in the UK by 2015. Follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Vauxhall Ampera amps up for police duty at Scotland Yard

Vauxhall Ampera amps up for police duty at Scotland Yard originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 14:00:00 EST.
Your car could get the best fuel economy figures this side of a bicycle, but if you're driving around in circles because you can't find your destination, it kinda defeats the whole point. That's why a hybrid needs a good navigation system as much as it needs the computers that manage the charging and use of its gasoline-electric powertrain. To that end, Fisker Automotive announced a deal with TomTom to provide the sat-nav system for the Karma.

The three-year partnership deal announced at CES just this past week will see TomTom provide its latest route guidance systems into the vehicle touted as the world's first premium plug-in hybrid.
If you want to try out one of Better Place's electric vehicles, you'd have to move to a country where the project is establishing its infrastructure or else wait for it to come to your neighborhood. At least that's how it was looking until now. Because the latest announcement from the electric-vehicle startup has us booking our tickets for Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport.

Actually, we already swung by Tel Aviv to experience the Better Place model first hand, but soon you'll be able to as well. That's because Better Place Israel has just announced a rental deal with one of the country's biggest agencies. Starting in the new year, Eldan will offer the Renault Fluence Z.E. for rent, with full access to the Better Place network of charging posts and battery-switching stations.

The rentals are being targeted at private consumers (like you and me) as well as at corporate fleets - that is, the remaining ones Better Place hasn't already signed on to contract, anyway. Book your tickets now and you could be floating down to the Dead Sea, touring Jerusalem's holy sites and cruising the eastern Mediterranean coast in electric bliss in no time. Follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Better Place signs deal with rental company in Israel

Better Place signs deal with rental company in Israel originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 09:53:00 EST.
With cars like the Insight, CR-Z and Civic Hybrid, Honda is certainly no stranger to hybrids. But their latest isn't a hatchback. It's not a sedan. It's not even an SUV. In fact it's not a car at all. It's a snowblower.

The Japanese industrial giant, as you may well be aware, makes a lot of things besides cars. It makes motorcycles, for starters, not to mention ATVs, marine engines, personal watercraft, jet airplanes, robots, and all manner of power equipment. Stuff like generators, lawnmowers and snowblowers.

This latest model is called the HS1336i, and it joins the Insight, CR-Z et al in Honda's hybrid line-up. It's powered by a combination of iGX390 four-stroke OHV engine and a pair of electric motors. The gasoline engine drives the auger and fan, and charges the battery that powers the electric motors driving the tracks. During deceleration, the engine acts as a generator and even the braking energy is recuperated to recharge the battery. How insightful.

Call it the hybridization of power equipment, then, and you can read more about it in the press release after the jump, and scope it out in the high-res image gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading Honda gears up to electrify winter with hybrid snowblower

Honda gears up to electrify winter with hybrid snowblower originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 18:06:00 EST.
Battery technology, say the detractors, just isn't there yet. Not enough to make electric vehicles a viable prospect for the majority of drivers at this point. That's what extended-range hybrids are for - to relieve range anxiety and help EVs go that extra mile or two hundred.

That's why the latest figures released by Fisker regarding its Karma luxury hybrid sedan are raising some eyebrows. European regulatory body TUV has independently tested the Karma and found that it can drive 83 kilometers (51.6 miles) on electric-only mode. To put that into perspective, consider that the Toyota Prius PHEV can only go 23 km (14.3 miles) on electric mode without spooling up the gasoline engine for more juice. The Chevrolet Volt, meanwhile, is EPA-rated to go 35 miles on electricity alone.

Fisker must be happy to hear the news after the Environmental Protection Agency rated the Karma at 52 mpge with an electric-only range of 32 miles and 20 mpg after that. The same agency rated the Volt at 95 mpge in the city and between 35 and 40 mpg with the engine running.

But as is the case with every new powertrain that's entered the market this past year, we're less interested in test results than we are in what owners are actually experiencing. Since the Karma is so new, we have a little more waiting to do.
Continue reading Fisker Karma goes 51.6 miles in electric mode

Fisker Karma goes 51.6 miles in electric mode originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 19:58:00 EST.
The FIA is serious about developing environmentally friendly forms of motorsport. But while its premier series - Formula One - is implementing new measures like regenerative braking and heat-energy recuperation, F1 remains a fossil fuel-powered sport. That's where Formula E comes in.

First mooted back in April and officially announced in August, the FIA Formula E series starts from scratch with a new formula that calls for entirely electric propulsion. The FIA has put out an official tender for interested constructors to submit their proposals, and after Italian upstart FondTech pitched their idea in September, now Kleenspeed is getting in on the action.

The American outfit already produces an array of electric vehicles, from scooters and karts to electric-converted Miatas and even the EV-X11 sports prototype. Its Formula E concept is certainly no less ambitious, outlining plans for Kleenspeed to develop and manufacture the energy storage and propulsion systems, the complete chassis and everything that goes in it. Kleenspeed even wants to field the car with its own works team.

Whether the Formula E championship ends up going with a single design (like IndyCar, GP2, Formula 2, A1GP, Superleague and just about every other open-wheel single-seater racing series), a constructor-team format (like Formula 1) where every team designs and builds its own cars, or something in between likely depends on the quantity and quality of the proposals. But we can already see Kleenspeed's design whizzing around the world's finest racing circuits. Details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Kleenspeed pitches Formula E concept to FIA

Kleenspeed pitches Formula E concept to FIA originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 08:01:00 EST.
Electric cars and the act of hooning wouldn't ostensibly be something you'd think would go well together. But then that's what they said about EVs and racing. With the Leaf NISMO RC, Nissan is setting out to prove those assumptions wrong.

The company brought its electric racer to the Motorsports Japan Festival at Odaiba in Tokyo, where a trio of drivers got their chance to slide the Leaf RC around a giant parking lot to entertain the assembled masses. And while the results may not be up to Ken Block standards of Gymkhana, it is fun to watch them try.

Seeing cars powered by alcohol is nothing new. After all, that's what ethanol is. But as expensive as gasoline might get, fueling a car on single malt scotch would be more wasteful than lighting your cigar with a hundred-dollar bill. Yet that's just what one Mark Reynier is doing. Well, almost, but not quite.

Reynier is proprietor of the Bruichladdich distillery (pronounced "brook-laddie") on the Scottish isle of Islay ("eye-la"). The island is known for its smokey, peaty whiskies, and the (relatively) recently re-opened Bruichladdich distillery is already earning itself distinction not only for the quality of its whiskies - this writer thoroughly enjoyed a glass of the good stuff just the other day - but also for its sustainability. Bruichladdich offers a range of organic single malts, and is also one of the first distilleries to operate self-sufficiently.

The distillery grows, malts and distills its own whisky on-site (a rarity even among single malts), but it has now taken things a step further. Bruichladdich, you see, generates its own electricity by reusing the waste products from the distilling process. And now Reynier is also using that electricity to charge up his Nissan Leaf.

To celebrate the feat, Nissan and Bruichladdich have teamed up for a special Leaf edition organic whisky.
Formula One racing certainly holds an electrifying level of excitement for the legions of fans around the world, but don't go counting on that translating to electric propulsion just yet.

We recently reported on the FIA's new technical regulations for 2014 and beyond, which, in addition to switching from 2.4-liter V8s to 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engines, also called for an expansion of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System. Currently KERS allows the cars to store some of the energy normally lost under braking in a battery for redeployment under acceleration. The new system, as outlined in the updated regulations, would allow for a larger battery that could also store energy recovered from the exhaust heat. That energy, however, would have to be used in the pit lanes, where the conventional internal combustion engine would have to be switched off.

The move raised a lot of eyebrows and even some safety concerns, particularly from the Renault camp which powers a growing number of teams on the grid and which feared that, with personnel and cars operating in such close proximity in the pit lane, eliminating the engine noise would be downright dangerous. Those on the commercial side of the sport (such as Bernie Ecclestone and the individual race promoters) meanwhile expressed concern that the electric-only propulsion in the pit lane would drive away fans who come for the noise, and thus endanger the economic viability of the series.

Ecclestone is so against the idea, in fact, that he reportedly insists it won't come to fruition. The FIA, for its part, has yet to rescind that particular part of the rules, but with the power that old Bernie yields we'd be surprised to see it go forward against his objections.
F1 back-tracking on electric propulsion in pit lanes originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 14:02:00 EST.
Ask any addict why they don't quit, and they'll probably tell you it comes down to one sticking point. The addiction could be to caffeine or cocaine, but whatever the excuse - from work stress and social factors to depression or a general lack of willpower - addicts always have something to blame for their continued use.

The same could be argued for oil addiction. Because when it comes down to it, there really is only one sticking point that prevents a world dependent on petroleum from switching to electric vehicles. It's not about availability, because as any economics student (or drug dealer) will tell you, supply always catches up to demand. It's not about the source of the electricity, or the production and disposal of batteries. More than any other reason, oil addicts blame range anxiety.

For drivers used to getting into their cars and hitting the open road, range is a commodity we're just not willing to give up. While battery technology is constantly improving, it's still a long way from matching the range you can get on a full tank of gas and an endless chain of pump stations. But there's one company that says they've found the solution... or at least a stop-gap. One that could get the world's drivers off of gasoline and on the road to electric propulsion. We headed out to Tel Aviv to see what they were up to. (Continue reading...)

Of all the teams and manufacturers in F1, typically Renault has been the most supportive of the FIA's push for more environmentally-friendly means of propulsion. The French manufacturer - which has, in the "civilian" market, often been at the forefront of the electric car scene - was a big proponent of the switch to smaller, turbocharged engines for Formula One. But this whole business about electric-powered F1 cars could be one step too far.

As you may recall, the FIA (which governs F1 and a myriad other motorsport disciplines around the world) recently issued new regulations to take effect by 2014. They stipulate that, in conjunction to the new 1.6-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engines, F1 cars would need to operate solely on electric power from its Energy Recovery System (which would now be able to capture heat from the exhaust as well) while in the pit lane.

However, Eric Boullier, who heads up the Renault F1 team, appears concerned at having F1 cars zipping silently through the pit lane. And not just for the loss of spectacle, but for safety's sake. And Boullier (pictured above) has a point: the pit lane is the only spot on the track where people and cars meet - often in very close proximity - with mechanics out in the open and team strategists running between their team's garage to the pit wall. If they can't hear a car coming, it could lead to catastrophic levels of pedestrian collision, though the simple addition of a noise-emitting device would likely solve the issue.

What's the point of going on safari if your truck's rumble and exhaust sully the experience? That's what Axeon and Land Rover have reasoned, teaming up with the solution you see here.

Developed in collaboration with JLR South Africa, this Defender 110 - a long-wheelbase model with an extended pickup bed (fitted with extra seating) instead of an extra set of doors - has had its diesel engine replaced with a lithium-ion battery pack mated to an unspecified motor capable of propelling the Defender over approximately three times the usual "game drive" (read: hunting expedition) on a single charge. All this without emitting a single local gram of carbon and maintaining silent operation that will bring its occupants closer to the game without spooking them off.

The vehicle will be unveiled this month at the INDABA tourism expo in Durban. Follow the jump for the details in the press release.

Think of Ferraris and the most direct correlation you're likely to come up with to the color green is the money you'll spend on one. But the fact of the matter, according to reports, is that Ferrari is gaining more ground in its commitment to reduce carbon emissions than any of its competitors.

The results come from the latest annual study conducted by JATO Dynamics on the European automobile industry and its requirement to cut the carbon emissions of its vehicles by a quarter by 2015. Rather than average the achievements over the model ranges in a company's line-up, however, the study takes sales volumes into account. That's how Ferrari - whose cleaner-burning California reportedly accounts for nearly half of its sales - has managed to reduce its average emissions by 46 g/km, down to 326 g/km in 2010, to nearly reach the half-way point in its program.

By contrast, Aston Martin has only cut 0.6 percent, Lotus 3.2%, Bentley 1.9 and Lamborghini 1.5. While Ferrari, Lotus, Bentley and Lamborghini can amortize their figures into those of their parent companies (Fiat, Proton and Volkswagen), independent Aston Martin doesn't enjoy that luxury, prompting the creation of the Cygnet city-car to help with its carbon reduction scheme.

A great debate is currently taking place between Formula One teams as to whether they should reinstate the use of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) for next year. The proposal is being considered by the team principals through the framework of the Formula One Teams Association, but while some teams are strong proponents of the reinstatement, others are more hesitant.

The system - which collects heat energy from braking and stores it in either an electric capacitor or mechanical flywheel for release under acceleration - was used last season in the premier motorsport series, but was promptly dropped for this season given a number of issues teams faced.

The Renault and Ferrari teams - both of which used systems developed by Fiat subsidiary Magneti Marelli and are developing hybrid electric vehicles for public consumption - are reportedly the most vocal in their support of the system's return for next season. Potential measures to bring KERS back could include doubling the capacity from 400KJ to 800KJ (thereby making it more useful and also more relevant), implementing a budget cap specifically for KERS development, having teams that already have the system developed provide it to teams that don't and even using a single supplier to level the playing field.

You can bet that when Ferrari does a hybrid, it isn't going to be your run-of-the-mill battery assist. Based on its experience last season in Formula One with the Kinetic Energy Recovery System - developed in concert with Magneti Marelli (another automotive technological powerhouse under the Fiat umbrella) - Ferrari unveiled the HY-KERS concept earlier this month at the Geneva Motor Show.

Incorporated into a rolling test bed based on the 599 GTB Fiorano, the HY-KERS concept integrates a regenerative braking system into the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (first seen on the Ferrari California) to provide a 100-horsepower boost, stored in a flat lithium-ion battery mounted below the vehicle's center of gravity. The system was designed to minimize weight, the penalty further offset by the elimination of the V12 engine's conventional battery and starter motor. But don't take our word for it: follow the jump to watch a video straight from the factory explaining how Ferrari's system works.

What's the one thing that would fix the automotive industry today? Fresh ideas, you say? Well, this isn't quite that. In fact, auto shows these days - Geneva particularly - have become packed with legions of swoopy, stylish four-door hybrid concepts. What this is, though, is one of the more attractive ones we've seen to date.

Created by the quizzically-abbreviated I.DE.A. Institute, the Sofia's hourglass shape is (according to the press release after the jump, at least) inspired by the female form. And we don't have much trouble believing that line, curvaceous as it is. The hybrid part, though, is pure fantasy. Because like many design studies, the I.DE.A. Sofia is an empty body shell. It's got no interior, but more to the point, it has no mechanicals inside. Its creators say it could theoretically accommodate a V8 engine, with or without the assistance of an electric motor, driving either the front wheels or the rear.

Like it? Don't get too excited by the prospect of production. The I.DE.A Institute claims to have contributed to designs for numerous major automakers, but in its 30-year history has produced more household appliances and furniture. For the next upstart looking to join the likes of Fisker and Tesla, though, the sumptuous shape could be just the ticket. Don't take our word for it; have a closer look for yourself in the galleries below.

Ask anyone who's ever shopped for an ATV, outboard engine, personal robot...heck, even a private jet, and they'll tell you that cars are only the tip of the proverbial iceberg for Honda. The Japanese industrial giant is one of a handful of automakers that also makes motorcycles (along with the likes of Peugeot, BMW and Suzuki, to name just a few). And here in Geneva, the two core competences have come together in the form of the 3R-C Concept.

Packing two wheels up front and one in the back, the 3R-C is the latest take on the trike formula. The open cabin (which can be closed by the canopy windshield when parked) can accommodate one passenger/driver/rider in enclosed comfort, while the twin front rims keep it stable. It follows in a long line of intriguing R&D products from the technological powerhouse, but don't expect to see it parked curbside in front of your office/home/biker bar any time soon.
