Bosch was at the the AFVI Expo in Las Vegas this week touting two things: that huge CNG hydraulic hybrid refuse truck and the company's work bringing more diesel vehicles to American roads. As Bosch announced early in the week, the push for oil burners is having an effect. We spoke with Bosch's director of marketing of diesel systems, Lars Ullrich, who said:

Especially in the age group between 25 and 45, people are really drawn to diesels. They do not have the opinion of the '70s, when diesels were loud, stinky and slow.

This is all partly Bosch's fault. For the last six or seven years, the company - which makes parts for all sorts of vehicle powertrains and other parts of the car, as well as industrial systems and household items - has been promoting diesels through things like ride and drives with diesel Smart Fortwos and some Audi and Volkswagen models. Diesels really made a comeback in 2009, and there are about a dozen diesel models currently available in the U.S.

What does the future hold for diesels here? While J.D. Power predicts diesels will make up eight percent of the U.S. market in 2015, Bosch predicts it'll be 10 percent (down from a 15 percent prediction a few years ago thanks to the recession and some companies - i.e., Acura - canceling diesel models).

Will more diesels mean more biodiesel? Ullrich was hesitant:

In general, we are really focused on having the right fuel standards in place. From a Bosch perspective, the components can be adjusted to that, however, we wanted to sure that the right fuel quality and enforcement is in place to make sure we can bring components into a stable enough market where we don't see any big negative impact.

For $300 on top of the price of a Ford Transit Connect, you can get the van with a CNG prep package that includes hardened engine seals and valves. Of course, those $300 don't give you the full CNG package. For that, you need to go to a conversion company to get the tanks and other items installed. One such company is Altech-Eco (warning, link plays an audio automatically), which claims to be the only one with an EPA certificate of conformity to do so.

Altech-Eco was at the AFVI Expo in Las Vegas this week promoting its CNG conversions, which can also be applied to new model Focuses (see here), Fusions, Mercury Milans and to F-150, F-250, F-350 and E-150, E-250 and E-350 series vehicles. Not all of these vehicles have a CNG prep package, but Altech-Eco trains Ford dealers how to install the kits in such a way that they don't need to damage or drill through any of the frame. Alteco-Eco also offers bi-fuel kits, in case you'd like to keep the gasoline option.

What's in a word? The new group Autogas for America thinks that the word "propane" needs a rewrite when it comes to using it for propulsion (don't tell Dixie Chopper). The new word of choice (if the group's name doesn't give it away) is autogas, which is what propane used for cars is called in places like Europe. The group knows that Americans think propane is used for grilling, but autogas, well, that's a gas used for autos, right? Who cares that propane and autogas (and liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG) are the same thing?

Autogas for America (AFA) will have a full-fledged roll-out next month, but had a soft preview during the AFVI Expo in Las Vegas this week. Aiming to be "the unified voice of the U.S. Autogas market," AFA is lead by Stuart Weidie, president of Alliance AutoGas and Alliance founding partner Blossman Gas. Who's in AFA? These groups, which AFA calls "top industry representatives, transportation specialists and environmental advocates." We see a lot of propane companies there, not a lot of environmental advocates.

Still, propane/autogas is a cleaner fossil fuel and it "substantially reduces harmful emissions, costs less than gasoline and is almost entirely domestically produced," says the AFA. Some examples of propane being used in transportation include: Rousch's long-term involvement in converting vehicles over to propane, three propane groups in Texas coming together in Austin and the EPA's look at conversion kits.

Gasser - Click above for high-res image gallery

The oldest car on display at the AFVI Expo in Las Vegas this week was the Gasser, which started life as a 1933 Ford Roadster. For the last eight months, the team at Daytech Auto, led by Wayne Day, has been working on making this car run solely on compressed natural gas. With about $125,000-150,000 invested so far, the car is finally getting close to ready. One item still on the to-do list: tweaking the ABS brakes.

Pretty much everything in the Gasser has been upgraded to meet the car's slogan of "hugging trees and hauling ass." The CNG drivetrain is made up of a LS-7 7-liter V8 engine (used in the Chevrolet Corvette Z06) "that's been torn down to the nuts and bolts and purpose built for CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) with new rings, valves and seats, and a host of other goodies." The CNG tanks come from Luxfer, which brought the car to AFVI, and can hold the equivalent of 10.5 gallons of gas and provide a 200-mile range. The system puts out just under 700 horsepower and can get around 30 miles per gallon equivalent. If you just did the math of 10.5 gallons and 200 mile range and got, oh, around 20 mpge, well, that's because you're not driving it like a hot rod when you get 30 mpge. By burning CNG and sticking a catalytic converter in each exhaust pipe, the Gasser meets Tier II Bin 5 emission standards. Day, who's been involved with CNG for around eight years, told AutoblogGreen he believes, "This is the next step in hot rods."

CNG hydraulic hybrid refuse truck in the Technology Parade - Click above for high-res image gallery

One big difference between the AFVI Expo and a standard auto show is that the garbage trucks show up at AFVI. That's what happened this year during the conference's Vehicle Technology Parade, which was sponsored by South Coast Air Quality Management District, in Las Vegas this week. The lineup shows just how diverse powertrain choices are getting.Well, soon anyway, since one of the qualifiers to be in the parade was that the vehicle wasn't on the quite yet. Here's who was there:

A Bosch Rexroth refuse truck, the fist of its kind, which uses compressed natural gas (CNG) and a hydraulic hybrid system. The truck will soon be put into service in New York City, where it will be compared to trucks with other, more common powertrains already in use.

A Chevy Impala converted to run on CNG by Natural Drive that, most days, is used for taxi service in Dallas, TX. Natural Drive converts a lot of GM vehicles, and the Impala taxis should be available in California this fall.

A Dixie Chopper lawn mower running on propane. Propane and CNG lawnmowers are terribly important options, given how disgustingly dirty most lawnmowers are. How dirty are they? How about spewing 93 times as many smog-forming emissions as cars do?

There were also three old favorites in the parade: a plug-in Toyota Prius, a CNG-powered Ford Transit Connect and a FCX Clarity from Honda.

That's quite a line-up, and it's only going to get more varied down the road.

Xtreme Green police vehicles - Click above for high-res image gallery

Xtreme Green Products didn't need to drive far to attend the AFVI Expo. The Las Vegas-based company was on home turf to show off two of its four electric vehicles designed for police use. Even so the company's standard electric scooter and other options were nowhere to be found. As a fleet show, the police-specific rides were probably the best to bring, anyway.

On the left we have the Police Pro ATV, which can go up to 45 miles per hour and has a maximum estimated range of about 75 miles off of a full charge. Built for both off-road and on-road use, the Police Pro ATV can operate in either two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive mode and has a 100 amp hour, 72 volt lithium ion battery.

The three-wheeled scooter on the right looks a lot like the T3 Series vehicles that were used in the Audi Green Police Super Bowl ad but is actually the Sentinel PMV (that's police mobility vehicle). The Sentinel can go up to 29 mph and has an 80-mile range at 10 mph. The T3, by comparison, can go up to 25 mph and has a 75-mile range with the biggest optional battery pack.

e-max electric scooter - Click above for high-res image gallery

The all-electric e-max scooters have been on sale in Europe for a while, but we got our first look at them here in Las Vegas at the AFVI Expo this week. The company behind the scooters has been, in some form, at least, been working on plug-in scooters like these since 2003 and now has a line-up of seven models (three are just lithium-ion concepts at this point). The scooters have different configurations and range estimates, but, in general these are intended for getting around in urban areas. There are delivery models and scooters with swappable batteries, which must help with the tagline that these vehicles are "loved by nature."

The company's website manages to hide the prices for these vehicles pretty well, but when we learned about these scooters a few years back, the 110s model cost €3,500 (around $4,444 at today's exchange rate). The 110s can go 170 kilometers at 25 km per hour or 90 km at 45km/h and recharges its silicon battery in 4-6 hours. The e-max scooters are currently available in Germany, but marketing material distributed at the booth talks about U.S. availability for the 90s, the 110s and the 120L, which uses a lithium-ion pack, so keep an eye out.

Zap Dude - Click above for high-res image gallery

Last month, Zap introduced the all-electric Dude, an off-road ATV. The company has sold a half-dozen of the $5,495 units and has "a warehouse full" of them ready to go out the door to a good home, according to Zap regional manager Dennis Vickery, who we talked to here at the AFVI Expo in Las Vegas. In this case, a good home means parks or other natural settings, because the Dude can only be used in off-road settings. The Dude (and yes, we want to make countless Lebowski references, too) can go up to 25 miles per hour and has a range of 25 miles. Apparently, the Dude can carry a rider up to 290 pounds and tow up to 650 pounds using a 48V permanent-magnet rush DC motor and standard 65aH absorbed glass matt (AGM) lead acid batteries that recharge in around 4-6 hours.

If you're thinking that electric vehicles might have trouble meeting stated range estimates on paved roads, Zap is with you and has included a very clear statement attached to the ATV's webpage: "Range will vary significantly depending on hill grade, speed, and rider weight." You've been warned.
T. Boone Pickens may not know exactly what's up with V-Vehicles, a company that he's invested in that wants to make high-mileage vehicles, but he does claim to know some things. During his opening keynote speech at the AFVI Expo in Las Vegas, for example, the long-time oilman and big natural gas promoter said that he thinks God put tremendous amounts of the fossil fuel under the United States for us to use. Specifically, he said:

We got lucky. We showed up with a resource that is even better than the oil, which is natural gas. Where did it come from? It came from our technology in this country in developing the shale. ... I'm convinced, as I get closer and closer to going - I'm 82 and what I mean by going is serious going - that I want to be sure and give all credit where I think it should go. I'm not kidding you, I think it's divine intervention is what happened to the United States. We now have more [natural gas] reserves than any other country in the world.

Read on after the jump to find out more about the plan Pickens has for all that gas, and more.

The first car that caught our eye on the AFVI Expo floor in Las Vegas was, well, the first Smart Fortwo of its type in the U.S. This is the all-electric Smart ED, which is currently being tested in Berlin and London. It will begin on-road tests in the U.S. this October, and Smart USA and Coulomb Technologies brought the only model on the continent to Sin City to show off the vehicle and the charging options (including Coulomb's as-yet-undisclosed Level 2 home charging system).

The second-generation Smart EDs include a 16.5 kWh lithium ion battery pack, a 30 kW drive motor and a 3 kW on-board charger. The pack and charging system were developed and supplied by Tesla Motors. The car can charge in 4-6 hours and has a range of about 100 miles per charge.

We talked with Smart USA vice president Derek Kaufman, who said that he's driven the Smart ED in a few places in America to great feedback. On one college campus, he said, he could have sold 50 in an hour, it got so much positive attention. We think the Fortwo was made for electric drive, and look forward to getting the chance to test drive one for ourselves soon.
We'll have a report of that event up in a bit, but we got a chance to ask him a few questions about things he didn't speak about from the stage, including his involvement with the mysterious and possibly troubled V-Vehicles. Pickens told AutoblogGreen that, "I don't even keep up with that, someone else does." This isn't to say Pickens doesn't know anything about the company's plan to make efficient vehicles: he said V-Vehicles will be adding natural gas powertrains in the future. "It's in their plans," he said. All he would say about the vehicle's design is that it looks, "all right."

Pickens' partner, Andrew Littlefair, the president and CEO of Clean Energy, was on hand once again and told AutoblogGreen that the years of work Pickens has done pushing natural gas have been paying off, if not exactly right away. Littlefair said:

The effects are things like AT&T announcing to do 8,000 vehicles. Two years ago, there was one heavy-duty truck, now there are seven different models. There were [natural gas] trash trucks in three states, now it's 12 trucks. Hundreds of stations have been built. There still needs to be more product, though.

The real expansion in using natural gas for transportation has taken place outside of the U.S., though. Littlefair said that the major automakers are selling a lot of models in Europe and South America, but the only passenger vehicle you can buy in the U.S. is the Honda Civic GX. Littlefair said:

In the last two-and-a-half years, we've gone from five million natural gas vehicles worldwide to 12 million, and we've seen an uptick here, too, but not that great. You can't base it all on looking on the OEMs, because our guys have been, frankly, out to lunch on it.

As for making a CNG hybrid, both Pickens and Littlefair think it's a bad idea.

You have a fuel that is cleaner, cheaper and domestic. Why do you want to go make it more expensive and put a battery with it? We have the Honda GX and in Europe there are 16 natural gas vehicles. We don't need to go try out something else. Just run it on natural gas. It's 130 octane, you can increase the pressure ratio and you got what you need.

That's what's happening over at AFVTech, which is prepping the hot rod for the upcoming Alternative Fuels and Vehicles Institute expo that's coming in May. The company is using what President Kevin Fern called the "Natural Drive dedicated EPA-certified CNG retrofit systems" for clean-burning 600 horsepower. The conversion uses a modified General Motors LS7 7-liter V8 engine (used in the Chevrolet Corvette Z06), a six-speed transmission, drive-by-wire controls and ABS disc brakes.

AFVTech is also working with Arizona's Fountain Hills high school's research club on turning a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria into a hydrogen-powered vehicle.

[Source: Green Car Advisor, Green Car Congress]
AFVTech working on CNG-powered, 600 hp 1933 Ford Roadster originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 27 Sep 2009 13:29:00 EST. I've heard the stories, the advertising campaign that tries to sell Sin City as, well, Sin City that takes your credit card. What interested me the most, though, was how my environmentalist mind would react to being in a city that, quite honestly, celebrates excess and waste. I didn't expect to feel comfortable in an oasis of VIP come-ons and bright lights surrounded by a harsh desert. I arrived in town around noon and, during my lunch at a quite reasonable buffet (Indian food, not one of those with endless tables featuring every food ever), I happened to read Wendel Berry's essay Faustian Economics from the latest issue of Harper's. Whoops.

Berry, who wrote an astounding collection of essays called The Long-Legged House back in 1969, takes on biofuels in the Harper's essay. Well, he starts with biofuels and smoothly segues into a discussion of limits, reductions and how it will ever be possible to really come to terms with the way we're consuming the world's resources. More thoughts on this after the break.
Continue reading AFVI 2008: A few final thoughts on green moves in Sin City, with Wendell Berry

AFVI 2008: A few final thoughts on green moves in Sin City, with Wendell Berry originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 23 May 2008 20:09:00 EST. Still on the diesel tip, Sam talks excitedly about the Volkswagen TDI Cup racing series before moving on to the much more charged topic of EV infrastructure. Our interview this week isn't so much a one on one as it is a speech from T. Boone Pickens, he of oil magnate status, about how oil is not going to last forever. Boone Pickens

The majority of the attendees at the AFVI Expo's Fleet Day breakfast keynote seemed quite pleased to listen to T. Boone Pickens (just like last year). Pickens is the founder of BP Capital Management and had a sit-down discussion with Andrew Littlefair, the president and CEO of Clean Energy. Why do AFVI folks like this guy? He's got a lot of information (he's made billions in the oil and energy industry) and he sees a way to power the future (he's made a huge investment in wind power in Texas, for example. Littlefair said that without Boone, there wouldn't be an NGV industry in the U.S.

A few choice quotes:

"We are importing 72 percent of our oil. ... We are now transferring $600 billion [a year] out of the United States to a few friends and a hell of a bunch of enemies. I can tell you, we are paying for the war against ourselves."

"If they [China] had the Olympics today, in this smog, and ran the 100 meter dash, it would have to be a relay."

"Diesel will never sell, again, below gasoline. It will always be more expensive than gasoline."

"We're actually dealing with a huge shift of capital out to somewhere. We're going to be reduced to - I promise you it's going to happen pretty quick, too - we'll be reduced to something less than the superpower that we are."

At the recently held Alternative Fuels and Vehicles conference, a panel of representatives from some American electric car makers suggested they would prefer to see a slightly different scenario for the U.S. market. Nay to the whole battery swapping thing, yea to fast-charging stations.

Here are some quotes from the participants as reported by Jennifer Kho of greentechmedia:

Bryon Bliss of Phoenix Motorcars: "With the ability to do rapid charge, we see that playing more of a role than stations to exchange them." "There are a lot of complications [in exchanging the batteries]."

Richard Kasper of Chrysler's Global Electric Motorcars said the investment that battery-replacement stations would require would be "very significant."

Jeff Boyd of Miles Electric Vehicles: "Fast charging is here; it's available. You can put a station at a Starbucks for a cost of $125,000. There's no reason to wait [for something else]."

During the question and answer session after the panel, Dean Taylor, a senior technical scientist at Southern California Edison, brought up a point often raised in debating fast-charging. Specifically, that daytime charging by drivers would add to peak demand as well as put strain on the grid. That was countered by Bryon Bliss who stated that charging stations could pull the electricity from batteries, like those made by Altairnano, which could also be a boon to utilities by helping them with grid stabilization. It's not because he wears a bow tie and cowboy boots; it's because he will publicly say he's a good friend of the President. Not many people around who will admit to being tight with George Bush these days. Williams, who is the chairman of the Railroad Commission of Texas, revealed this and many other things during his speech to the AFVI Expo crowd during fleet day last week about the power of propane as an alternative fuel. Now, why would the Railroad Commission care about propane? Well, in Texas, the Railroad Commission doesn't regulate railroads (anymore). Instead, it regulates the "state's oil and gas industry, gas utilities, pipeline safety, safety in the liquefied petroleum gas industry, and the surface mining of coal and uranium." Therefore, if you're involved in LPG or other gases in the state, then the Railroad Commission is your agency. But, if you don't want to hear about propane from Williams, then skip ahead to about minute 10:30 in the audio clip below and you'll hear a little joke about the AFVI and Moses.

Listen to Williams (15 min):

<object width="290" height="24" type=""application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.weblogsinc.com/media/audio_player.swf"> <param value="soundFile=http://stadium.weblogsinc.com/autobloggreen/audiointerviews/AFVI-2008-Michael-Williams.MP3"

Still, throw a handful of alternative-fueled cars, trucks and CUVs in a Las Vegas parking lot, and I'll check it out. As you can see in the video I made of the event, Bosch was heavily represented by a half-dozen or so clean diesel models. GEM and Miles EVs were easy to spot, and there was even a hybrid cherry-picker and a propane pickup or two. To kick off the event, Ed Begley, Jr. and Bobby Rahal cut a ribbon (see pictures below) and then took a short loop around the lot. Watch the video after the break, and thanks to Shotgun Musical Laboratories for the sounds.

Gallery: AFVI 2008: Ed Begley and Bobby Rahal test drive

Continue reading AFVI 2008: Ride and Drive video from Las Vegas

AFVI 2008: Ride and Drive video from Las Vegas originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 16 May 2008 19:17:00 EST. Electrorides, Inc. brought the prototype ZeroTruck to the AFVI Expo in Las Vegas this week, trying to get fleet operators to sign up for an upcoming national tour the truck will make later this summer to show off its capabilities.

Tedd Abramson, the president and CEO of Electrorides, Inc., spoke to AutoblogGreen about the ZeroTruck and said that the truck will save fleets money not only at the pump but also in the back room, where maintenance billing is done. Down time at the fueling station is also reduced, so there are cost savings on top of the lower price for the energy needed to move the truck.

The ZeroTruck is a 2008 Isuzu N Series chassis converted to run on batteries. The vehicles uses a lithium polymer battery pack that offers a 100-mile range. The 14-foot truck offers very flexible options for the bed and, since Isuzu chassis makes up around 78 percent of the market, fleet operators are very familiar with what these options are, how the vehicle operates, and how it holds up in the field.

All of this does not come cheap. Abramson said that the ZeroTruck will have a cost premium of just over $100,000 a compared to the standard diesel version. All those cost savings, Abramson said, mean that the premium should be recouped in five years. Abramson said he expects the vehicle to offer about ten years of operation. If everything checks out, then that cost premium won't be a problem at all. We'll have to wait and see how many fleet operators pull the trigger on this truck to see if they believe the company's claims are accurate. Note: Electrorides gave AutoblogGreen permission to post the slides used during the company's presentation at the Expo. The representatives were Bryon Bliss, vice president of sales and marketing for Phoenix, Jeff Boyd, COO of Miles, and Richard Kaspar, GEM's president and COO. Oh, and our friend Ed Begley, Jr. was there as well, continuing his relationship with Phoenix.

The purpose of the panel was for each company to present their case not only for EVs but for their particular products. Since these companies all offer vehicles with quite different capabilities and styles, they're not really competitors, and it was a congenial event. Since I expect our readers to be pretty familiar with the vehicle line-ups of these three companies, I won't go into details about them. There were a few things said during the 90 minutes that caught my ear, though, that I think you'll want to hear about.

The Miles EV offices are in Santa Monica, CA. To commute to work, Boyd drives a prototype of the XS500, Miles' upcoming highway-speed battery-powered sedan. The price target is still $35,000 and deliveries should start in the third quarter of 2009. The sedan will be followed by an electric SUV. I told Boyd that the next time I'm in town, I'll be knocking on the office door, begging for a ride. I mean, it worked for the Roadster.

Phoenix expects deliveries of its all-electric SUT to start at the end of June (yes, in six weeks). Certification should be finished June 1, Bliss said and the company has orders for 600 vehicles to fill as of today.

GEM's big news is the addition of new options to the back cargo space of its work trucks. Since GEM vehicles have been selling for over a decade, GEM has had plenty of time to listen to customers and find out what they want/need. New covers and door types are now available, and you can see a list of GEM vehicle options here.

Greentech media was also in the room, and wrote up this account of what happened. Both Miles and GEM had vehicles on the show floor, and I've included galleries of their displays below. The Phoenix photos are from the 2007 AFVI Expo. For those of you keeping score, Zap and Dynasty were nowhere to be found at the Expo this year (unlike last year).

Gallery: AFVI 2008: Miles EV booth

Gallery: AFVI 2008: GEM's new cargo options

Gallery: AFVI Ride & Drive Phoenix SUT

AFVI 2008: Miles, GEM and Phoenix share EV product line-ups originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 15 May 2008 13:10:00 EST.
