Less than five months after electric-vehicle maker Amp said it was switching from passenger-vehicle conversions to delivery-truck electric-vehicle production, the company earned a victory of sorts by getting approval to sell its trucks in the most populous US state.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) said Amp could start selling its 2014 model-year E-100 heavy-duty electric trucks. Amp started making those trucks, which have a 19,500-pound payload and a 100-mile single-charge range, in January. Earlier this month, Amp started a testing program with TRC Inc. and moved away from its strategy of converting SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mercedes-Benz ML to electric power last fall. Read Amp's press release below.

California continues to be Ground Zero for electric delivery truck use. Earlier this month, UPS said it would start deploying 100 electric-powered trucks in the Sacramento, San Bernardino, Bakersfield and Fresno areas. UPS estimated that the trucks, which were made by Stockton, CA-based Electric Vehicles International and have a 75-mile single-charge range, will help the delivery service cut diesel-fuel use by about 126,000 gallons a year.
Continue reading California approves Amp electric truck sales

California approves Amp electric truck sales originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 14:12:00 EST.
Ever since Amp switched from converting passenger vehicles to electric power to converting big delivery trucks, the question has been when the E-Truck program will get real. The answer is now, since Amp has announced a new test program with TRC Inc. that will "independently test the vehicle to ensure it can survive the rigors of package delivery in an environment where it is common to keep their vans in service for 20 years or more." Amp says the final pre-production test program should be completed within the next month.

"EVs are gaining traction, but at a slower rate than anticipated."

There's a reason for the change to big trucks, ones with a 19,500 pound gross vehicle weight. Amp founder and CEO Steve Burns told AutoblogGreen that AMP is "focusing only on EVs that have the correct metrics that encourage short terms sales. As you know, most passenger EV companies have only found limited success from a sales point of view. EVs are gaining traction, but at a slower rate than anticipated."

According to Amp, the two main obstacles to the mass adoption of EVs are the price premium and a lack of infrastructure that causes range anxiety. Before designing a 100-kWh battery pack good for 100 miles per charge in the converted trucks, Burns said, "AMP labored to find a segment of the US transportation sector that could overcome the two above obstacles and move to quick adoption. So, we focused on fleets that have defined or predictable routes. If you have a 100-mile range on a charge and a 65-mile route, then range anxiety is eliminated. Similarly, the bigger and less aerodynamic a vehicle is, the worse its gas mileage. And the worse the gas mileage, the quicker the premium for electric could be paid off. So, we looked for big, square fleet vehicles that routinely traveled less than 100 miles a day ... and the classic diesel delivery step van came clearly into focus.

"So, we focused on fleets that have defined or predictable routes."

"We estimate that there are about 100,000 existing diesel step vans on the road today that would be excellent candidates for re-power to our All Electric drive. We have built a bolt-on replacement electric drive that fits most of those step vans and priced at a point that enables the customer to typically pay for the conversion in under 4 years. Most operators of these types of trucks keep their trucks in service for 10 years or more, some 20 years. Our drive system also lines up well with many of the state and city initiatives, such as the ones in CA, NY, Chicago and Baltimore. With incentives, our re-powers can be paid back in less than 2 years!

"So, if these vehicles are the perfect place for the EV revolution to start, why hasn't it happened? Well, the fly in the ointment is that these vehicle have a gross vehicle weight of 19,500 lbs and slice the wind like a brick. If you notice, most EV companies are starting with super slippery small cars, because intuitively that makes sense when energy storage is heavy and expensive and chargers are scarce. So, that was our challenge. After 5 years of development, we believe our Electric Drive system is robust enough to be worthy of the rigors of commercial truck delivery routes and priced at a threshold that enables fleet operates to easily rationalize the purchase." Burns told Plug In Cars Amp could convert up to 1,000 vans in its first year.
Continue reading Amp now testing medium-duty, all-electric truck

Amp now testing medium-duty, all-electric truck originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 07:57:00 EST.
Amp Electric Vehicles recently said it'd get out of the business of converting SUVs to run on all-electric powertrains, and would instead focus on converting bigger delivery trucks. Now, Amp has reached an agreement to help develop paratransit vehicles for a Central Pennsylvania transit authority. The twist? They will be able to be recharged wirelessly.

Amp is collaborating with wireless electronics company Momentum Dynamics Corp. to make the paratransit medium-duty trucks for the Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority (BARTA) in the Reading, PA, area. A pilot program is supposed to start by March 2013.

Amp, which was founded in 2007, had specialized in converting SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mercedes-Benz ML to run on battery-electric powertrains (after giving up on converting things like the Saturn Sky). But the company in October said it was moving away from that and would focus on converting trucks, which usually run on diesel fuel and typically get less than 10 miles per gallon. Amp's press release is available below.
Continue reading Amp will help develop wireless paratransit EVs in Pennsylvania

Amp will help develop wireless paratransit EVs in Pennsylvania originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 23 Dec 2012 09:10:00 EST.
It's a turn in the road for Amp Electric Vehicles. The conversion electric vehicle (EV) company announced this week that it was no longer planning on making or selling EVs based on passenger vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mercedes-Benz ML. Instead of the SUVs, Amp will now put all of its focus into delivery trucks, like the recent conversions for Navistar and FedEx. On a conference call yesterday, CEO Steve Burns said Amp will convert medium-sized step vans from 10 miles per gallon diesel beasts into quiet electric-drive trucks. It's a good deal for fleets, Burns said, on the call, because "the surprising truth is that although an all-electric step van costs more at the beginning, on a 10-year cost basis, they are at least $100,000 cheaper than the air-polluting, climate-changing diesels that fill the roads these days."

Speaking of money, Amp got a $7.5 million commitment from Kodiak Capital Group last month. That's much better than the $107,000 worth of sales it had in the quarter ending June 30 while racking up expenses of $2.5 million. Today, Burns told AutoblogGreen:

We essentially have just put passenger vehicles on hold until we see a bit more demand. However, as one caller asked during the Q&A, we are still hoping to send EVs to Iceland and Caribbean, but probably as conversions. The bar to be a new vehicle OEM is pretty high and we are having a hard time justifying the capital required until demand picks up.

Conversely, the Navistar deal produced such a great E-Truck that we have seen tremendous interest and are therefore pursuing that avenue for now. Our heart is still very much tied to EV passenger vehicles, but for now, the business side of the brain will have to win over the heart.

The Icelandic and Caribbean deals were to put thousands of electric SUVs into those islands. We'll see how the projects move forward from here.
Amp stops conversion SUV plans, shifts focus to electric delivery trucks originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 19:47:00 EST.
California dreamin'? Well, for Ohio-based Amp Electric Vehicles, wishes for some much-needed funding came true courtesy of one Golden State private-equity firm. Amp has announced it has received a $7.5 million investment from Orange County, CA-based Kodiak Capital Group. The funds will allow Amp to further expand its EV-fleet production.

The funding follows up last week's announcement that Amp delivered its first heavy-duty battery-electric step van to Navistar. That vehicle is said to have a 100-mile single-charge range as well as 1,000 cubic feet of cargo capacity.

Amp opened its first dealership this spring (pictured), exhibiting its GCE (based on a Jeep Grand Cherokee) and the MLe (which uses a Mercedes-Benz ML350) battery-electric vehicles in the process. Those SUVs have a single-charge range of as many as 125 miles. In January, Amp priced the Jeep-based EV at $57,400. Amp is also partnering with FedEx to convert two 14,000-pound trucks to EVs that will be tested in the Washington, D.C. area. Amp's press release announcing the $7.5 million is below.
Continue reading Amp gets $7.5 million in private-equity funding from Kodiak Capital

Amp gets $7.5 million in private-equity funding from Kodiak Capital originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 08:54:00 EST.
Earlier this summer, Amp Motors delivered an electric delivery truck to FedEx, but that's not the only large vehicle that the Cincinnati-based conversion company has been working on. Today, Amp said it has delivered its first heavy-duty step van to Navistar, as part of a previously announced development deal between the two companies.

Amp also said the freshly converted EV, which has a cargo capacity of 1,000 cubic feet, was designed to have a 100-mile range and has passed initial testing (whatever that means).

Trucks like the one Amp converted are well-suited for electric powertrains, since they are often used in urban environments, where cancer-causing diesel emissions can affect many people. Plus, as Amp says, a "typical ... delivery truck may make over 200 stops per day and still travel under 100 miles," so range is less of a worry. The powertrain Amp used in the truck, "is based on the well proven AMP platform, and has been engineered to be suitable for both re-powering of existing diesel vehicles in a fleet as well as new vehicles that may be ordered by fleets in the future."
Continue reading Amp delivers first all-electric heavy-duty truck conversion to Navistar

Amp delivers first all-electric heavy-duty truck conversion to Navistar originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 09:53:00 EST.
FedEx has been quite serious about adding electric vehicles to its fleet, saying in 2011 that it would more than double its number EV vehicles. Of course, all that meant was going from 19 to an expected 43, but it's the start of removing some tailpipes. Plus, with overall big green vehicle ambitions, FedEx

In some cases, going EV means using the Nissan NV200 EV prototype in London. In others, it means partnering with upstart Amp Motors to convert two 14,000-pound GVW trucks for FedEx to test in Washington, D.C. This proof of concept, all-electric step van could be a huge first step, as FedEx has said it hopes to convert 9,000 vehicles to EV power. Amp also has a contract with Navistar for a similar van project.

Steve Burns, Amp founder and president, sent an email to AutoblogGreen explaining why the company is interested in these sorts of delivery trucks:

As I know you are keenly aware, it has been a tough year for smaller EV companies (Aptera, Bright, Azure, Think) because the passenger EV market has been a bit slower to evolve than first thought. It is moving nicely, and is actually doing better than hybrids did in 2000 when they first came out, but it is proving to be a slow process to unwind 100 years of an oil based economy that is so tightly woven into the fabric of this great country.

To that end, we began to look for areas that might be more receptive to adapting EVs with our technology in the shorter term. Earlier adoption would provide both learnings and revenue while the passenger EV market to ramps up.

The two major factors that appear to influence EV adoption are:

1) Price
2) Limited Range

We looked for applications that got very poor gas mileage (so that the payback would be quicker) and traveled less than 100 miles per day so that range was not an issue. So, re-powering fleets that utilized larger vehicles for urban deliveries came into focus. And the clearest vehicles that emerged were the step vans used by the likes of FedEx, Navistar. The chassis and bodies on these types of vehicles are typically used for 20 years. So, removing the diesel based drivetrain and re-powering 10-year-old vehicles with all electric drivetrains looked to be the most cost effective manner to get tens of thousands of these vehicles converted from very dirty old style diesel to zero emission electrics. The key was to get the payback under 5 years. Preferably 4 years.

Our ML EV drivetrain pushes around a 5,000-pound vehicle spiritedly. So, the task of moving a 14,000-lb vehicle somewhat spiritedly was not too daunting of a task. So, essentially we utilized our dual Remy model model with large scale cells and our same control software/hardware and we had the formula and the price point.

In other Amp news, the company's first dealer had a launch party recently and, says Burns, "we are about to sign up our second dealer who is one of the top Mercedes-Benz dealers in the country."
FedEx getting Amp'd delivery truck, could be first of 9,000 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 22 Jun 2012 16:07:00 EST.
In March, Amp Electric Vehicles announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding with U-Go Stations Cayman to bring its converted all-electric Mercedes-Benz ML to the Caribbean islands. Turns out, the gas-less powertrain is causing some bureaucratic headaches.

In order to allow EVs into the islands, the government needed to pass a law saying so. This law was passed and signed by the governor last November, Amp's Marty Rucidlo told AutoblogGreen. But, when John Felder, a local car dealer, went to the Grand Cayman Department of Vehicle and Drivers Licensing to get the car approved, he was told that registration would not be possible. According to Caymanian Compass, the problem is that the new law has not yet been given a date when it goes into effect because specific regulations are still being drafted.

Rucidlo told us that these regulations are not specific to EVs (they relate to things like putting boots on improperly parked cars, using cell phones while driving). To help promote the car, he went to the islands over Memorial Day with an MLe that had been in Miami and met people who were interested in buying the electric SUV. He said that the dealer currently has six orders for the car. Last year, Felder was able to get government approval for a Chevrolet Volt, and the ministry issued a statement saying the the new law's regulations "will be brought into effect very shortly."

"We were well aware what we were stepping into with this," Rucidlo said. "We wanted to give them a hand."
Amp's plan to sell electric Mercedes-Benz in Cayman islands runs into roadblocks originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 04 Jun 2012 13:57:00 EST.
Amp, the Ohio-based maker of battery-electric SUVs, has opened its first dealership in Cincinnati and said first deliveries would start by year end.

Amp of Cincinnati opened last week and showed off both its Jeep Grand Cherokee- and Mercedes-Benz ML350-based battery-electric vehicles. The dealership has started taking $5,000 deposits for the SUVs, which Amp says have a single-charge range of as many as 125 miles. Amp said in March that its SUVs qualified for the $7,500 tax credit from the IRS. That month, the company also said it reached an agreement to sell its SUVs in the Caribbean.

The company in January said the Jeep-based Amp would be priced at $57,400, bringing the out of pocket price just under $50,000.
Continue reading Amp opens first dealership in Cincinnati

Amp opens first dealership in Cincinnati originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 19 May 2012 16:29:00 EST.
The all-electric SUV conversions from Amp - gas-free versions of the Mercedes-Benz ML and the Jeep Grand Cherokee - now qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit from the IRS. Amp CEO Jim Taylor said in a statement that the announcement couldn't come at a better time. "Given the recent increase in gas prices and the low operating cost of an EV, more buyers are turning their attention to EV alternatives," he said.

Even though the official news just came through, Amp was clearly expecting the feds to qualify its cars for this credit. The company set the price for the Jeep Grand Cherokee EV at $57,400 during the Detroit Auto Show, which is a kind of unusual number unless you subtract $7,500 and realize you come up with just under $50,000, an important number for marketing purposes.
Amp Electric Vehicles is getting ready for some fun in the sun. The Ohio-based EV conversion company announced today that it has signed a deal with U-Go Stations Cayman to distribute its all-electric SUVs in the Caribbean islands. Amp converts both the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Mercedes-Benz ML vehicles to electric drive.

The memorandum of understanding that Amp signed with U-Go gives the distributor "exclusive retail and fleet distribution rights in the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, St John, St Thomas, St Kitt, Bermuda, the Bahamas and Barbados." There was no mention of how many vehicles this deal might entail, but U-Go is building out a charging infrastructure in the Caribbean. The first demo vehicle should be delivered this summer, which is also when U-Go will start taking orders. Amp also has a potential deal to deliver up to 1,000 electric vehicles to Iceland.

Amp CEO Jim Taylor said in a statement that the islands are the right place for his company's EVs.

The combination of the near perfect weather conditions of the Caribbean Islands, the high cost of gasoline, the inherent short commutes of an island community and the desire to reduce dependence on foreign oil makes for an outstanding scenario for our EV's.

Ohio-based Amp Electric Vehicles may not have the newest concept vehicles at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but it did bring in a big politician: Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH, pictured), who touted the work that Amp is doing by converting two SUV models - the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Mercedes-Benz ML - to electric drive. Amp also announced the price for the electric Jeep, $57,400, and the first dealer who will sell the two electric SUVs, Dana Hackney of Mercedes-Benz of Cincinnati. Brown said today's announcements we're "good news for Ohio." The two vehicles will be converted at Amp's engineering and production facility in Loveland, OH.

Amp founder and president Steve Burns kept the Ohio-centric messaging going by saying that, "We think cars should be built in the midwest, not in California," a not-so-subtle stab at Tesla Motors, which will also sell an EV for $57,400: the base level Model S. Burns later said that Amp isn't directly competing with Tesla, but that there is a subset of the people who may buy an electric sedan who would be interested in an SUV. The question, of course, is whether they will want an Amped Jeep, for which you can place an order today and with first deliveries scheduled for this fall, or if they will wait for the Tesla Model X, to be unveiled February 9th. We'll have a Quick Spin drive report of the two Amp vehicles up soon.
Continue reading Amp annouces $57,400 price, first dealer for Jeep Grand Cherokee EV conversions

Amp annouces $57,400 price, first dealer for Jeep Grand Cherokee EV conversions originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 12:43:00 EST.
Surprised at the headline? Neither are we. But still, here's the official word from Amp Electric Vehicles: all-electric conversions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee are coming. Amp will start taking orders for both two-wheel and four-wheel drive versions of the battery-powered Grand Cherokee at the Detroit Auto Show in early January.

The roots for the reason that Amp has decicded to convert the Grand Cherokee go back to the DaimlerChrysler days, when the two big auto companies decided to build SUVs - including the M-Class and the Grand Cherokee - on the same platform. Since Amp has already done the work to convert the ML SUV, it "didn't have to change a bolt" to fit the electric powertrain into the Jeep. The only thing that's different, Amp president Steve Burns told AutoblogGreen, is how the powertrain software communicates with the vehicle. Performance, therefore, is also similar, so expect around 100 miles of range on a full charge of the 37.6-kWh li-ion phosphate battery. Burns said the ML is a little slipperier and better on the highway, while the Grand Cherokee is wider and performs better in the city. For more on the technical details of the ML, read this.

When the Amp Jeep Grand Cherokee comes to market early next year, Burns said, it will compete (in a sense) with the Tesla Model S and Model X. Sure, it's hard to compare a Model S to a Jeep, but when you're the only two companies selling all-electric luxury SUVs, you "compete" with whoever's around. The electric Jeep will also compete with the Model S on price. While Burns won't announce specific numbers just yet (firm pricing information, delivery dates and names of the first dealerships will be coming in January), he did say that the electric Grand Cherokee will compete with the lowest-priced Model S. So, figure a price of under $60,000 before a potential $7,500 federal tax credit. Burns said this should be a good sticker price. "The luxury market has proven to be receptive to the higher prices that EVs command," he said. "Jeep is considered a luxury SUV but not as high as a Mercedes. Now, we've got two different price points [to sell]."

Burns and his team are still proud to be converting vehicles, rather than trying to make something brand new. "As we see some of our peers fall by the way side, which is discouraging, most of them tried to build cars from scratch," he said. With the Jeep, "we were able to get to a quality vehicle and a well-liked vehicle and a top-selling vehicle" and offer an electric version wihtout taking billions in government money. Burns said this is something the team is "really happy about."

If you'd like to get your hands on one of these electrics, pay Amp a visit during the Detroit show by heading downstairs to the ride and drive. If you can't make it to the Motor City, Amp's website will be revamped by the time the show starts and it will take online and telephone orders. In early 2012, at least five cities in the U.S. will have Amp vehicles for sale at already-existing dealerships. For a company that has made a business out of using infrastructure and products that are already out there, this simply makes sense.
Continue reading It's official: Amp bringing all-electric Jeep Grand Cherokee to Detroit

It's official: Amp bringing all-electric Jeep Grand Cherokee to Detroit originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 19:46:00 EST. The Icelandic television program Independent People (Sjálfstætt fólk) recently aired a half-hour episode all about charismatic entrepreneur Gísli Gíslason and his efforts to begin to shift the entire fleet of gas-powered vehicles in that country to plug-in power. If you can't tell he's worth spending 30 minutes with, just look at the way he rocks a silver suit while posing with an all-electric ML from Amp Electric Vehicles (taken when the first AMP EV hit the streets of Reykjavik back in May). That's style.

Gislason told AutoblogGreen:

The show was about me and my mission of changing things here in Iceland - from gasoline cars to EVs. I had the chance to explain everything about EVs, the infrastructure and the benefits - and also point out that now the biggest barrier is our mind (other things have been solved).
And since I have bought a ticket with Virgin Galactic, my space trip was also one of the topics of the show. I will be the first Icelander to go into space with the Icelandic Flag. The show was a huge hit here in Iceland - and did really wake people up.

One reason why EVs have such potential in Iceland is that there are no import taxes on them, while gas-powered vehicles have a very high VAT (values added tax) plus the import taxes. Gislason said, "The plan is to re-pay the VAT (sales added tax) on all EVs from January 1st until 2020 or until 10 percent of the fleet is using 'green energy' (whichever comes first) - the VAT on cars is now 25.5 percent (on top of the price of the car + transportation cost + import taxes)." If Iceland's plan is a success, "similar incentives" are on tap for Norway, he said.

The first step of Gislason's goal is to make the EV a "viable choice for the general public in Iceland" by the end of 2012. The three facets of this plan include offering both slow and fast charging, providing a "wide selection" of electric cars, and to, "Make the necessary mind change for this to happen." Sounds interesting, no?
Amp Electric Vehicles announced today that it will reveal a brand new all-electric SUV at the quick-approaching 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Right after the curtain is pulled back, a running prototype will be part of the Ride & Drive, so we'll be able to take the SUV for a spin in early January.

Amp isn't saying what model it will convert, but it does say that the SUV has "an All-American image." Considering that Amp already converts the Mercedes-Benz ML EV, our speculation is that the new Amp electric SUV uses the similar Jeep Grand Cherokee, but we'll have to wait until we get to Detroit to make sure.

Amp CEO Jim Taylor told AutoblogGreen that there are two main reasons for the new SUV. First, some fleet managers can't afford to buy the Mercedes, both because it's expensive and because it's a foreign brand. Second, since Amp has aborted making conversions of the Equinox (for "a bunch of reasons," Taylor said), it wanted a domestic vehicle to sell. Both the ML EV and the new SUV will be converted in Ohio. Taylor used to run Cadillac, then moved over to Hummer and became Amp CEO last December.

About a year ago, Amp approached GM about partnering up on all-electric SUVs, but did not get a positive response and felt it needed to "roll the dice" on a new platform. Since Amp's team is made up of many ex-GM employees, some were prejudiced to keep working on the Equinox, Taylor said, but the cost reality meant that making a shift to the new SUV was financially the better move. The powertrain that is being used in the ML EV is the same that is going into the new SUV, so that will help keep costs down as well.

Earlier this year, Amp delivered its first electric Equinox to Dayton Power and Light. Amp also has an order to deliver electric SUVs to Iceland, and we look forward to seeing how many will be Benzes and how many will be Jeeps. Or whatever.
Continue reading Amp bringing new electric SUV to Detroit, no longer working on Equinox EV

Amp bringing new electric SUV to Detroit, no longer working on Equinox EV originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 08 Dec 2011 18:02:00 EST. Amp isn't the first company to figure out that luxury vehicles can better hide the cost of an expensive battery pack than an econobox - Tesla Motors and Fisker Automotive pioneered this strategy - but this is a case where you don't have to be first to benefit. After spending a few years learning how to convert standard ICE vehicles from General Motors to electric drive (the Saturn Sky and Chevrolet Equinox), Amp last week delivered its first converted Mercedes-Benz: a honking ML 350.

Now called the Amp ML EV, the world's first production all-electric SUV was the star of the show at an event held last week attended by all of Amp's top brass as well as the mayors of Cincinnati and Blue Ash (the suburb where Amp is located) and a representative of the governor of Ohio. In their speeches, the politicians made it clear they were proud that a local business would be giving an environmental benefit to a country halfway around the world, and that this showed the region's economic powerful reach. The real reason for the shindig, after all, was to hand over the keys to the ML EV's first and most important customer: Gisli Gislason, the chairman and CEO of Iceland's Northern Lights Energy (NLE), which has ordered 1,000 of these babies. We were on hand because Amp promised to let us drive it. Continue reading...

The vision of an Iceland filled with electric vehicles got a bit more real today in, of al places, Ohio. At a press conference at Amp's facility in Cincinnati, the EV conversion company delivered the first of potentially 1,000 all-electric SUVs to Gisli Gislason, chairman and CEO of Northern Lights Energy. The vehicle in question is Amp's latest conversion, a Mercedes-Benz ML 350.

The 1,000-vehicle order - potentially worth $100 million U.S. - has been in devlopment since last November, when NLE and AMP signed a letter of intent for the SUVs (the companies signed a "definitive agreement" last month). Today, Gislason was all smiles and thumbs up as local politicians and Amp employees milled around the showroom with the Amp Mercedes-Benz ML EV (one of only two Amp has converted thus far). Amp said that "volume deliveries" should start this September. NLE plans to begin selling converted SUVs models, including Amp's Chevrolet Equinox EVs, in Iceland and other Nordic countries. We'll have more from Cincinnati soon and, until then, you can find more details in Amp's press release after the jump.
This was the first big step in NLE's plan to turn Iceland into a country full of electric vehicles and deliveries were supposed to start in early 2011 and continue for the following five years. The electric SUVs - initially Chevrolet Equinoxes and then also Mercedes Benz ML vehicles and, potentially, other models - will be first sold in Iceland, and later in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Faroe Islands, Amp said.

Last week, Amp and NLE signed a "definitive agreement" for these 1,000 vehicles, saying that the potential value could be over $100 million (which comes to around $100,000 per Equinox) and that the first delivery is scheduled for May. Twenty more will be delivered in September.

These vehicles will be used by "fifty Icelandic companies and government offices, including the Ministry of the Environment," Gisli Gislason, chairman and CEO of Northern Lights Energy, said in a statement. IF NLE gets its way, this number will increase to 300 companies in the near future. NLE has also ordered 150 all-electric converted Range Rovers from Liberty Electric Cars.

In mid-January, Amp Electric Vehicles, an automotive company that converts OEM vehicles over to battery-powered rides, delivered its first electrified Equinox to Dayton Power and Light. Now, there's word that more of them there electrified SUVs will hit U.S. streets soon.

Amp's chief executive officer, James Taylor (no, not the legendary singer), former head of General Motors' Cadillac and Hummer divisions, has, in his first 100 days as CEO, reviewed the status of the company, offering up this statement:

During my first 100 days, we have done a bottom up review, leveraging internal and external automotive expertise to provide a clear company assessment and establish our business plans. A good portion of our recent efforts have been focused on cost targets and production for our fully electric SUV's.

After completing his extensive review, Taylor proudly reports that:

Amp will immediately initiate low-rate SUV production while finalizing certain vehicle validations, followed by larger scale production planned for the 4th quarter of 2011.

We take that to mean that at least one more plug-in option will hit the U.S. market soon.

In mid-January, Amp Electric Vehicles, an automotive firm that converts OEM vehicles over to battery-electric drive, delivered its first electrified Equinox to Dayton Power and Light. With more deliveries scheduled, Amp has turned to New Motor Advisors, a Michigan-based automotive consulting firm, for assistance with product development strategies, commercialization and execution.

New Motor Advisors, with over 200 years of combined product development experience, frequently assists both established and start-up automotive companies like Amp. New Motor Advisors has extensive ties in the automotive world, which could help build Amp's consumer base and provide the start-up firm with contacts throughout the industry. Jim Taylor, chief executive officer of Amp, said the tie up, "brings added depth of automotive experience we can leverage at this stage of our development."

With a massive 1,000-unit order for Amp's electric SUVs placed by Northern Lights Energy, a bit of assistance may be just what the plug-in conversion firm needs.
