Electric vehicle "miles" company Better Place will likely go public within two years to take advantage of what many expect will be broader electric-vehicle adoption throughout the world, Bloomberg News reported, citing an interview with company founder Shai Agassi last week.

Better Place will likely have one more private round of financing before filing for an initial public offering, Agassi told the wire service said. The company has raised about $750 million since its founding.

Better Place's concept - based on the cell phone industry model - is to lease charged batteries and charging time to motorists so they can drive an electric vehicle without also having to purchase a battery pack that could cost as much as the car. Cumulative sales of plug-in electric vehicles will reach 5.2 million vehicles in 2017, up from 114,000 vehicles last year, according to green-technology research company Pike Research.

Better Place last week started delivery of the first 100 Renault Fluence Z.E. electric cars to Israeli customers as part of the company's efforts to build out an electric-vehicle charging and battery-exchanging network throughout the country, and is planning on rolling out a similar network in Denmark

Better Place, the Silicon Valley company founded by former high-tech executive and Israel native Shai Agassi in 2007, has delivered the first 100 electric cars to Israeli customers. After years of tests and trial programs, the deliveries mark a big step in the company's efforts to build out an electric-vehicle charging and battery-exchanging network throughout the country.

Better Place has delivered the Renault Fluence Z.E. EVs to Israel, Bloomberg News reported, citing an e-mail from Better Place Israel Chief Executive Officer Moshe Kaplinsky. The company will deliver more EVs to Israel and is planning on rolling out a similar network in Denmark. Better Place said last month that it would roll out the program with Eldan Group, Israel's largest rental car company, and would target private consumers and corporate fleets.

Better Place is looking to promote the concept - based on the cell phone model - that motorists should be able to lease batteries and battery charging time so that buying an electric vehicle does not require them to also purchase a battery pack that can cost as much as the car itself.

The company said late last year that it raised another $200 million in equity financing from companies such as General Electric and UBS AG and that it would use the funds to expand its electric-vehicle battery swapping network throughout Western Europe and other parts of the world. The funding brought the company's total to almost $800 million in equity financing and almost doubled the company's valuation to $2.25 billion since its previous round of equity funding in January 2010.
Better Place starts Renault EV deliveries in Israel originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 27 Jan 2012 10:06:00 EST.
If you want to try out one of Better Place's electric vehicles, you'd have to move to a country where the project is establishing its infrastructure or else wait for it to come to your neighborhood. At least that's how it was looking until now. Because the latest announcement from the electric-vehicle startup has us booking our tickets for Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport.

Actually, we already swung by Tel Aviv to experience the Better Place model first hand, but soon you'll be able to as well. That's because Better Place Israel has just announced a rental deal with one of the country's biggest agencies. Starting in the new year, Eldan will offer the Renault Fluence Z.E. for rent, with full access to the Better Place network of charging posts and battery-switching stations.

The rentals are being targeted at private consumers (like you and me) as well as at corporate fleets - that is, the remaining ones Better Place hasn't already signed on to contract, anyway. Book your tickets now and you could be floating down to the Dead Sea, touring Jerusalem's holy sites and cruising the eastern Mediterranean coast in electric bliss in no time. Follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Better Place signs deal with rental company in Israel

Better Place signs deal with rental company in Israel originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 09:53:00 EST.
Better Place continues to play the investment alphabet game, with the company's Series C funding round netting $200 million of new financing from the likes of General Electric Co (not a surprise at all) and UBS. Even though many in the automotive industry are still skeptical of Better Place's battery swapping plan, the company is covering its bases with a robust, more standard charging scheme that sells miles the way cell phone companies sell minutes. The complete package is now worth $2.25 billion, at least according to investors.

During our visit to the Better Place visitor center in Tel Aviv, we learned that Israel is as good a place as any for Better Place to start a robust network. With that deal in place and others bringing Better Place to Tokyo and Hawaii, the new $200 million is earmarked for expansion in Western Europe. Better Place CEO Shai Agassi told Reuters that his company has proven that the model works and, "that it's in demand, and that it scales, as we begin to push into new markets and attract new investors and new partners."

Recently, Ecomagination, General Electric's cleantech and sustainable infrastructure website, interviewed Shai Agassi, the founder and chief executive officer of battery swap specialist Better Place. Questions centered on how Better Place will forever change the notion that electric vehicles are range-limited machines.

During the past week, the folks over at Ecomagination have been gathering questions from fans and electric vehicle enthusiasts to ask Agassi next week, and Ecomagination is reaching out to AutoblogGreen readers for input, as well.

So, if you've got a question for Shai, or are interested in viewing Agassi's YouTube response to questions asked of him and his firm, then head over to Ecomagination's site. Shai's response video will air on GE's cleantech site September 26 (Monday).
Ask Better Place's Shai Agassi a question originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 24 Sep 2011 08:16:00 EST.
Ask any addict why they don't quit, and they'll probably tell you it comes down to one sticking point. The addiction could be to caffeine or cocaine, but whatever the excuse - from work stress and social factors to depression or a general lack of willpower - addicts always have something to blame for their continued use.

The same could be argued for oil addiction. Because when it comes down to it, there really is only one sticking point that prevents a world dependent on petroleum from switching to electric vehicles. It's not about availability, because as any economics student (or drug dealer) will tell you, supply always catches up to demand. It's not about the source of the electricity, or the production and disposal of batteries. More than any other reason, oil addicts blame range anxiety.

For drivers used to getting into their cars and hitting the open road, range is a commodity we're just not willing to give up. While battery technology is constantly improving, it's still a long way from matching the range you can get on a full tank of gas and an endless chain of pump stations. But there's one company that says they've found the solution... or at least a stop-gap. One that could get the world's drivers off of gasoline and on the road to electric propulsion. We headed out to Tel Aviv to see what they were up to. (Continue reading...)

Better Place is headquartered in Israel and the battery-swapping EV enterprise has been held up as an example of that nation's high-tech capabilities. So, seeing the company take a beating in an Israeli newspaper may seem surprising. But that's just what journalist Dan Rabinowitz did in Haaretz:

Better Place's electric car network was supposed to bring us glad tidings of an innovative high technology that would preserve the atmosphere and the environment, redeem us from our dependence on oil and, above all, save us money.

But it is very doubtful that the electric car will indeed reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in Israel. And now that the full costs and the technical specifications have been revealed, there are equally serious questions about how much consumers will save.

According to Rabinowitz, the economics of Better Place don't work out for Israeli consumers or for Israeli tax payers. Instead, he calls the company's plans a "gimmick" whose only real value as a company is what it generates from the "monopoly it received from the state on building and operating charging stations." Ouch. It the company really more intent on scamming shekels from Israeli EV owners than it is on swapping batteries? At least one person seems to think so. Do you?

Over in Denmark, Better Place just unveiled Europe's first battery swap station. The celebratory event, held in the city of Gladsaxe, gives us an indication that Better Place is slowly but surely inching towards its goal of installing 20 swap stations and a nationwide charging infrastructure future in Denmark over the next nine months. The vehicle used to demonstrate the station's remarkable battery-swap capabilities was the Renault Fluence Z.E. - the UK's cheapest electric vehicle.

Better Place's battery swap stations are almost fully automated. Drivers simply swipe their membership card and the swapping action begins. That's how it works if your plug-in vehicle comes equipped with a swap-capable battery pack. If it doesn't, then battery swap stations are... well, useless. See the full press release after the break.

The founder and CEO of Better Place, Shai Agassi, said the biggest hurdle he needs to jump in getting electric vehicles to the masses isn't technological: it's the skepticism of big automakers. In an interview with EurActiv's Noelle Knox, Agassi said:

We're fighting a lot of pre-conceived notions. The biggest one of them is that change doesn't happen. In the automotive industry we haven't seen any significant change in about 100 years. The Ford Model T was the only massive transformation of how we make cars, how we sell cars, how we service cars.
And suddenly somebody comes up and says we can make a huge change in the way we build the car, the way we operate the car and the way we price the car. And the industry says change is not going to happen.

Agassi thinks gasoline-powered vehicles can be made obsolete by 2020 if things go well in the initial electric vehicle test markets. To this end, Better Place is offering automakers, for free, the license to build vehicles that will be able to access the BP recharging and swapping network. However, Agassi says most manufacturers don't even believe Better Place will be able to sell the 100,000 Fluence Z.E.s that it bought from Renault, much less want to invest their own funds in the technology.

For the past 180 days, testing for Better Place's proposed system of swappable batteries in electric taxis has been taking place in Tokyo. Agassi told Knox that, "if a taxi can work, anything can work." These tests are in preparation for the planned installation of the battery swapping system in three countries: Israel, Denmark and Australia. The company is a year away from launching the system in Israel where it has close to 70,000 vehicle orders, mostly with commercial fleets. According to Agassi, the first part of the Israeli network will be installed for $150 million, and further expansion will be paid for by the network itself. To put that money in perspective, $150 million is approximately what Israel pays for six days of gasoline. For more on Better Place's long-term plans, read this.

Some of the people who work for Better Place see their job as something bigger than themselves. Take, for example, Jason Wolf, North American vice president, John Proctor, communications and Michael Granoff, head of oil independence policies. AutoblogGreen interviewed these three at the Business of Plugging In conference and they all spoke on top of each other as they answered our questions. So much so that they said they're happy to share quote attributions for this story. It's illustrative for how the company thinks: we've got big problems facing us, so let's work together to solve them.

As the story goes, Shai Agassi, the founder and chief executive of Better Place, wanted to answer one seemingly simple question: "How do you run a country without oil?" The solution he came up with involves electric cars with swappable batteries. From there, he worked in a holistic manner and thought through the issues of overpowering transformers and charge spots, convenience and affordability, and he now has two automakers publicly committed to the strategy and a lot of people unsure that he's on the right track. Does his vision have a chance to work in an era of ever-cheaper batteries and auto companies that use proprietary battery chemistries and styles? His employees sure think so, as you can read after the jump.

After several months of successful operation in Tokyo, Better Place has decided that it's time for its switchable battery technology to make the trip to the Bay Area in California. Over the next three years, Better Place, with support from the U.S. Department of Transportation and other key groups, will deploy and operate four battery exchange stations in the San Francisco to San Jose corridor. A fleet of 61 electric taxis will be converted over to make use of Better Place's battery swap stations.

Though we're still not convinced that the whole battery swapping idea will work on a grand level, it makes perfect sense for a fleet of taxis. Given that most taxis drive continuously, they require a near-instant charge to continue their task of transporting the public. Waiting three to four hours for a standard charge, or even 20 minutes for a fast charge, is not really a feasible option in the fast-paced taxi world. However, battery swapping takes about as long as it does to refuel a traditional vehicle, and therefore, is ideally suited for many applications that require near non-stop use. Hat tip to Dan!

The world's first mass-produced electric car with swappable battery capability, the Renault Fluence Z.E., will stroll into the Danish market as the leaves hits the ground (i.e., autumn) in 2011. The vehicle will be offered to Better Place subscribers who will then have access to a nationwide network of both conventional charging units and battery exchange stations. Unlike Nissan, Renault will offer its electric vehicles at a set price, while charging extra fees for battery rental. This approach makes up-front costs more appealing, but those monthly battery fees add up quickly.

The Ingenioren, a Danish news outlet, reports that Better Place has set pricing for the Fluence Z.E., but is still ironing out the monthly rental rates. Via some help provided by Google Translate - because mastery of the Danish language still eludes us - we find that the Fluence Z.E. should start at a base price of 205,000 Danish Kroner ($38,409 U.S. at the current exchange rate). Buyers can then expect to pony up somewhere in the neighborhood of 589 Kroner ($110 U.S.) per month for battery rentals fees. Better Place will also provide buyers with a home charging unit, which is apparently included with each Fluence purchase. Let's reiterate, our understanding of Danish is non-existent, so any detailed interpretations of the article linked to below would be greatly appreciated. Hat tip to Dan F.!

*UPDATE: Our translation did indeed need help. Better Place contacted AutoblogGreen to say that it has not yet announced a subscription price for the battery. The 205,000 Danish Kroner price is accurate (and that includes VAT) but the 589 Kroner price is apparently based on Renault's battery-rental price in the UK. A Better Place spokesperson wrote, "The providing of a charge spot as part of the car purchase is also a misunderstanding. In the Danish text both aspects are pretty clear." Renault's official website says:

The family sedan Fluence Z.E. will be launched first in Israel (1st semester 2011) and then in other countries. Prices in Europe will start at a price of approximately €26,000 (depending on the local VAT rate). Prices in France will start from €21,300 with the €5,000 tax incentive deducted. Customers will also subscribe to a monthly lease starting from €79 (including VAT) to cover the battery.

General Electric, which recently unveiled its electric vehicle (EV) charger called the WattStation, has teamed up with battery swap specialist Better Place to accelerate the adoption of a global EV infrastructure. The duo will attack the industry on all fronts. Under the partnership, GE and Better Place will develop a battery financing program that kicks off with a pilot project providing funds for 10,000 batteries in Israel and Denmark. This project is expected to boost consumer interest in EVs and, potentially, help bring 10,000 battery-powered vehicles to the two countries.

The duo will push for the electrification of corporate fleets and looks to launch pilot projects in key North American markets, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Ontario, Canada, as well as in cities across Europe, Asia and Australia.

The final agreement stemming from the partnership aims at promoting global charging standards. GE and Better Place will push for compatibility and charging uniformity on the global level. GE's WattStation will be adapted to fit Better Place's service network and the companies will promote standards that "guarantee drivers can 'roam' from one charge point to another under one seamless transaction for faster charging and a more convenient experience." Sounds good to us. Hat tip to Mattias!

After announcing the completion of a three-month field test of its battery swapping system, Better Place has decided to keep the program running until at least late November. Three converted Nissan Rogues have been operating as taxis in central Tokyo, stopping by the Better Place quick change station for regular battery swaps. During the first three months of the program, the taxis accumulated over 25,000 miles and swapped batteries 2,122 times.

Those battery changes took an average of 59.1 seconds, considerably quicker than the average gas fill-up. Interestingly, the numbers say the Rogues are only going about 12.5 miles per swap. Hopefully, that figure means that taxi drivers have been bringing the vehicles in for swaps at every available opportunity to test the hardware. We'd hate to think that 12 miles is in any way representative of the actual range. Quick changes, even under 60 secnds, don't help much if you have to stop every 15 minutes.

The test program is currently suspended while Better Place engineers analyze data and make updates to the battery charging system. One change is that the charging rates will now be variable, with slower charging used to maximize battery life and faster charging only used when there is high demand for fresh batteries.

Sometime in 2011, Israel and Denmark will be the first markets where drivers of electric vehicles will be able to stop by a quick-change station for a freshly charged energy unit. Only one car will be compatible with the battery replacement system, the Renault Fluence Z.E. and Better Place will be the exclusive operator of the stations..

Renault has begun hot-weather field testing of two Fluence prototypes in Israel to evaluate performance of the air-cooled battery. The cars will also be tested with Better Place's first two robotic battery swap units. No doubt, automakers around the world will be carefully watching to see if the Better Place system is a success or a failure.

So far, only the Renault-Nissan Alliance has committed to Better Place's battery-replacement scheme. For the system to be technically and financially viable, automakers will need to adopt common pack formats in order to avoid having to stock an unmanageable number of pack types in the swap stataions. Another technical issue is thermal management. The Renault-Nissan batteries are air-cooled while many other manufacturers are using liquid cooling to maintain the temperature in hopes of improving performance and lifespan.

Electric vehicle infrastructure provider Better Place has concluded a three-month field test in Tokyo to prove its battery swapping technology works as promised. In cooperation with Nissan and battery supplier A123 System, three Rogue crossovers were converted to electric drive and given replaceable batteries. The battery-powered Rogues were used as taxis in the Japanese capital and had their 17 kilowatt-hour batteries replaced several times a day. In the test form, the Rogue EV has a real world range of 50-60 miles.

Apparently there was only one incident of one of the cabs needing a tow back to the swap station when a driver ran out of juice early in the test period. The rest of the time, everything worked out. Later this year, Better Place will launch a similar test in Israel before rolling out a full network of stations there and in Denmark by the end of 2011. In Israel and Europe, Renault will be supplying a version of its Fluence sedan with swappable batteries. Aside from Renault and Nissan, no other automakers have signed up to work with Better Place's battery swap scheme. You can watch a video of the battery swap here.

We're still not convinced that the whole battery swapping idea will work on a grand level, but there are countless possible benefits to such a system that we simply can't overlook. First and foremost, the speed of battery swapping is unmatched by any current method of charging that employs a cord. Better Place has demonstrated that it's a two-minute-or-shorter ordeal. Second, it just seems so darn convenient to pull up to a station, hand over a few bucks, get a fresh battery and be on your way. Finally, it's simply a cool idea that we would love to see work if all of the potential problems can be sorted out. If you've ever wondered what its like to sit in a vehicle while a battery swap takes place, wonder no more. A trio of taxis in Japan utilize the Better Place battery swapping station and we've got video to show that was captured from the back seat of one such taxi just for you. Follow after the jump to experience what battery swapping is all about. Hat tip to Martin!

Aside from all the technical issues, there have also been commercial questions about exactly how Better Place's battery swapping program would work. With Renault and Better Place finally getting ready to launch electric vehicles in Israel and Denmark early in 2011, the fog is starting to lift.

For the new Fluence Z.E. sedan, for example, Renault will be offering several purchase lease options. In Denmark, customers will be able to either purchase or lease a Fluence with a battery directly from Renault. If they choose that option, they will have to rely on plugs to charge the car and won't be able to take advantage of battery swapping. Customers who want to do quick battery changes at a Better Place station will have buy the car alone from Renault and then get a separate lease on the battery direct from Better Place.

The second Renault electric vehicle available at launch will be the Kangoo Z.E. van which will not have the so-called "quick-drop" battery. The vans will only be available from Renault and will require plugging in to charge.

Better Place continues baby-stepping its way to battery-swapping domination with the launch of its 90-day trial of a trio of taxis in Tokyo. The test, implemented in conjunction with taxi firm Nihon Kotsu, kicked off with ribbon cutting and a demonstration of some converted Qashqai having their power packs replaced in the latest iteration of BP's battery switcher. Unlike the previous version shown in Yokohama last year, this one has integrated charging with "optimal thermal management" and storage for 12 packs. Incidentally, the cells within the packs are not from Nissan, as one might expect, but from A123 Systems instead.

The taxis will be available from 8 AM till 2 AM around the Roppongi district and, if you are really curious about how the system works, there is a visitors' center on-site as well. Can't swing a trip to Tokyo? Hit the jump for video showing off the system following the official press release.

2012 Renault Fluence Z.E. - Click above for high-res image gallery

A few days ago, Renault announced it had finalized the production design of its first two electric vehicles and would start taking pre-reservations for the Kangoo Express Z.E. and Fluence Z.E. The Fluence is the bigger news since it will also be the vehicle that Renault provides for distribution in Israel by Better Place. Thus, it will be the first production electric vehicle with quick-swap battery capability.

The transformation from a conventionally powered family sedan to battery electric comes at a price though. The back end of the Fluence Z.E. has grown by five inches in length, which is not that big of a deal. Because the Fluence is a conversion rather than a dedicated EV design like the Nissan Leaf, it is not exactly weight optimized and the electric sedan weighs some 660 pounds more than the conventional model.

Part of this is likely due to the swappable battery and the body structure will probably need some extra reinforcement to support the battery. It will be very interesting to watch how successful the whole battery swap concept turns out in Israel, because right now almost no one else has bought into it.
