While some of us here at ABG HQ are major fans of BMW's diesel engines, we were disappointed when BMW opted to enter the U.S. market only with the twin turbo 3.0-liter six cylinder diesel. As fantastic an engine as that is, the 2.0-liter four cylinder is also plenty strong and yields even better fuel efficiency. At an event at BMW's North American headquarters this week, VP engineering Tom Baloga told the audience that BMW would introduce the four-cylinder diesel to the U.S. lineup now that tougher fuel economy standards have been imposed. In keeping with BMW's performance image, we will get the more powerful variants, likely the dual turbo, 204 hp version used in the 123d rather than the super-high-efficiency versions. Even with that engine, we averaged 37 mpg in the 123d last year. BMW plans to clean up the four cylinder diesel with a lean NOx trap like VW uses for the Jetta and Golf TDI rather than a more expensive and complex urea injection system. The four cylinder will most likely go into the 3 and maybe 1 series cars with the six being reserved for larger cars like the 5, 7 and X5.

Our leader Sebastian was down in Miami on Friday for international media launch of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and we'll have his review shortly. During the event, AutoCar's Greg Kable spoke with BMW project leader Peter Tünnermann about the company's hybrid plans. The X6 and the new ActiveHybrid 7 are just the first two hybrid models from Munich. BMW will apparently focus on the mild hybrid system for its higher volume cars because it's easier to implement with minimal modification. The two-mode strong hybrid will go into vehicles like the X-series SUVs.

Tünnermann also revealed that a third hybrid model will be added to the lineup within the next twelve months. He didn't reveal which vehicle it would be or which system it would use. The most likely candidate would be the new 5-series which is expected to debut in the first part of 2010, perhaps at Detroit or Geneva. If it is the 5, then it will be equipped with the mild hybrid used in the 7.
The new M5, however, likely won't be launched until the 2011 Frankfurt show. According to Albert Biermann, development boss of the M division, when it does arrive, it will cut CO2 emissions by 20 percent compared to the current model.

To do that, BMW will follow an increasingly common path with direct injection, turbocharging and revised gearing. The M5 will apparently use a version of the 555 hp turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 from the X5M/X6M. The increase in torque from the 383 lb-ft at 6100rpm of the current 5.0-liter V10 to around 500 lb-ft at 1500rpm will allow BMW to use much taller gearing for lower engine rpms.

Contrary to some earlier reports, the M5 will not use any kind of hybrid or KERS system. Biermann told AutoCar that the hybrid system from the new ActiveHybrid 7 would add over 200 pounds to the car. Instead, the cars weight will be reduced further through the use of carbon fiber body panels for the roof and trunk-lid.

The two vehicles mentioned in the release are the BMW M6 Coupé and the Megacity, which is part of the automaker's Project i. BMW still isn't spilling the beans about the type of powertrain - is it a hybrid or will it be offered with different powertrain options? - in the Megacity, but did say that, it:

will be launched under a BMW sub-brand in the first half of the next decade, the high-strength yet ultra-light material will make up a significant proportion of the materials used. In the Megacity Vehicle, The combination of the advanced CFRP fibres developed by the SGL Group and the BMW Group's expertise in the industrial manufacture of CFRP components is making it possible, for the first time, to install CFRP on a large scale in a series vehicle at a competitive cost.

Sounds positive.

BMW's new 5-series Gran Turismo is just now going on sale in Europe and will be coming to U.S. dealers in the next few weeks. However, the Munich brand is already looking at expanding the powertrain lineup. Here in the U.S., we will get the 535 and 550 GT with turbocharged six- and eight-cylinder gas engines. The current EU lineup adds BMW's marvelous 3.0-liter diesel six.

However, BMW is looking at adding four cylinder engines just as it does in the regular 5-series. First out of the gate could be the 2.0-liter twin turbo four cylinder diesel and the single turbo 175 hp could appear as well. In the manual transmission 320d with the 175 hp engine, the EU test cycle is completed at 49 mpg (U.S.). The bigger and heavier 5GT would likely get closer to 40 mpg, still an admirable number for such a large car. Even the current 530d GT is rated at 36.2 mpg (U.S.). Unfortunately, we likely won't get any of these engines anytime soon.
Most of the joint work actually ended last June and many of the staff have already been relocated to other facilities.

The Mercedes ML450 hybrid and BMW X6 ActiveHybrid are both going into production about now using a version of the two mode transmission built by Daimler.

Chrysler, which briefly built a version of the Durango and Aspen SUVs with the hybrid system last year, remains committed to re-launching the system in the Ram pickups in 2010. BMW is known for offering premium automobiles and motorcycles here in the United States, so it comes as little surprise that the German automaker would plan to produce premium electric vehicles as well. According to Autocar, those electric vehicles, which are currently being developed under BMW's Project i initiative, will be available with two-, three- and four-wheeled platforms.

Marc Gerard, head of interior design at BMW, explains that the automaker has yet to decide whether these Project i vehicles will "fit below Mini, between Mini and BMW or above BMW." Another issue that needs to be sorted out is whether the electric machines will break new styling ground or if the automaker will instead choose a more conservative path so as to not alienate potential buyers.

When you look at the total life-cycle of "zero-emissions" vehicles like battery or fuel cell vehicles, the environment is not left untouched. The process of making all the parts of a car requires energy and chemicals are released into the atmosphere. The casting process used to make metal parts like engine blocks and cylinder heads is one step in the process that usually has nothing to do with a vehicle being "emission free."

BMW will soon introduce a new process at its Landshut, Germany foundry for producing sand cores. The cores are used to create the internal cavities in cast components like water jackets and oil passages. Fine sand is mixed with binders and pressed into a mold. The core is then inserted into the casting die. After the molten metal is poured in, the binders evaporate and the sand is shaken out of the casting after it cools.

The cores are traditionally made with organic materials for the binders. The new process uses inorganic materials based on water-soluble alkali silicates. The casting tools no longer require dry ice blasting after use and the overall process runs faster and is less energy intensive.

BMW has been rumored as of late to be pursuing everything from a so-called "0 Series" range of cars to a revival of its Isetta microcar brand, but the Bavarian automaker remains essentially mum on plans to diversify into the microcar market. Stoking the fires, however, is the new Simple concept, a leaning trike that is geared toward the "professional commuter" - that is, an urban dweller who travels alone.

From the start, the SIMPLE (which stands for: "Sustainable and Innovative Mobility Product for Low Energy consumption") was designed to minimize resources both in use and in production. The leaning concept is tall as a 5 Series, yet shorter than a Mini Cooper, and it offers seating space similar to that of a 3 Series coupe.

That tidy footprint and a slick drag coefficient of just 0.18 means that the Simple figures to be around 450 kilograms (under 1,000 pounds), so it only needs a small internal-combustion engine and an electric motor to power it. BMW says the Simple is capable of hitting 100 km/h - 62 mph - in under ten seconds and it tops out at over 200 km/h (124 mph), yet it needs a miserly 2 liters of gas over 100 km (62 miles), or around 118 mpg.

This isn't the first time BMW has investigated thrifty trikes - it actually began working on its CLEVER ("Compact Low Emission Vehicle for Urban Transport") concept back in 2002 in conjunction with the Berlin's Technical University, a project that took the form of a compressed natural gas trike with a CVT.

While there are no plans for production of either the SIMPLE or the CLEVER, BMW's expertise in motorcycles and its increasingly prominent Efficient Dynamics initiative doesn't have us ruling out a similar vehicle sometime down the road. In the meantime, you'll have to make the pilgrimage to the BMW Museum to check out BMW's SIMPLE and CLEVER contraptions. Check out the high-res gallery below and a video and press release after the jump.

Says BMW, "This is what a safe, environment-friendly and highly practical single track vehicle for city traffic could look like in the future." Well then, let's dissect that statement and see how BMW sought to accomplish these seemingly contradictory goals.

First, safety. Between 2000 and 2003, BMW offered a scooter in Europe called the C1. Though a marketplace failure, that machine may still be the safest two-wheeler ever offered. Featuring a fully-enclosed cabin with integrated rollover protection, a front-end impact zone, a rider seat belt and a low center of gravity, the C1-E has safety baked right in from the start. To that package, BMW adds electronic aids that include Integral ABS, Tire Pressure Control, Anti-Slip Control and Traction Control. So... safety? Check.

Environmentally-friendly? The scooter itself emits nothing - BMW borrowed the electric motor and control systems from electric scooter manufacturer Vectrix (which recently filed for bankruptcy). Vectrix's battery pack, though, has been swapped out with a high-tech lithium ion unit for greater energy storage. Alternatively, BMW could equip the same basic platform with any electric motor or small internal combustion engine of its choice. So, check.

Now, how about practicality? First, that enclosed rider cockpit means the C1-E could be used in nearly any kind of weather. Further, the bike features a large luggage compartment built-in behind the rider. As far as single-track vehicles go, this one's pretty darn practical. As much as we'd like to see the C1-E go into production, that's not currently in the cards. BMW built this concept as its contribution to the European eSUM safety project. Want to know more?
It must be fun to be a car designer. Unless, of course, your name becomes synonymous with a specific styling trend that very few seem to appreciate... but we digress. It definitely seems that 24-year-old Pforzheim University graduate Anne Forschner had a good time coming up with her BMW Lovos concept, which can alternatively look either like a frightened porcupine or svelte salmon, depending on its needs at the time.

The exterior of the Lovos - which stands for Lifestyle of Voluntary Simplicity - concept is theoretically constructed from just one fully exchangeable part that recurs 260 times. Each exterior piece is covered in solar photovoltaic cells and can hinge on a substructure underneath to follow the sun or act as individual airbrakes. We can only assume the concept would be powered by electricity.

See the concept in all its glory in our gallery below and check out the rest of the story (in Russian or translated) at cardesign.ru. Thanks for the tip, Greg!

Will the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept that BMW debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this month spawn a production eco-friendly supercar from the German automaker? According to Auto Express, the answer is yes, and the U.K.-based publication is projecting that the new green M1 will be ready for sale in 2012.

Naturally, the heart of this rumor-spec supercar is a hybrid powertrain similar to the one shown off in Frankfurt. A turbocharged three-cylinder diesel engine displacing 1.5 liters would be used in conjunction with a pair of electric motors providing all-wheel drive capabilities. The run to 60 mph would theoretically take less than five seconds and top speed would reportedly be capped at 155 mph.

Other unique bits that were introduced on the Vision Concept that could potentially make it into production include active aerodynamic elements that allow for an excellent .22 coefficient of drag. An unknown source tells AE that the car's hybrid powertrain, dual clutch gearbox and aluminum-intensive chassis are all "ready for the road."

If there's any truth to this rumor, the new eco-friendly M1 successor would be marketed as a rival to the Audi R8 and would potentially hit the market with a price well north of $100,000. We'll see.
BMW hosted a lengthy press conference during which cars zoomed all around its raised track, and at the end the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept silently took the stage. It's a glass-topped Hot Wheels with two engines, a deep dish seventies-looking steering wheel and matching contoured wheels. Around the back corners the design elements get a little busy, but taken as a whole the EfficientDynamics Concept comes together well. Give it a more demure paint job and its built-in details will stand out beautifully. If this is the real future of eco, then sign us up schnell. Full details in the press release after the break.

BMW will be showing the production version of the 5-series Gran Turismo next week in Frankfurt and we'll have driving impressions coming in the next few weeks on Autoblog. The folks at AutoCar in the UK however, have already had an opportunity at the wheel of a GT that we won't be getting when the car goes on sale here later this year. The 530d Gran Turismo is powered by 241 hp variant of BMW's 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel similar to the engine available here in the 335d and X5 35d.

In Europe, the 530d GT is expected to be the top selling variant of the new body style and, like other cars powered by this engine, it should get excellent fuel economy while still delivering the performance BMW drivers expect. The GT is a big car, sharing the same 121-inch wheelbase with the 750i. The 530d is rated at a combined 36.2 mpg (U.S.) on the EU driving cycle. In spite of its bulk, AutoCar found it to be a very good handler and the "bi-modal" hatch gives the GT plenty of utility to go with its large interior volume. It's just too bad that BMW officials confirmed last week that Americans won't be getting the diesel GT for now.

There's a lot of competition to be seen as the world's greenest automaker - just look at the branding efforts surrounding the Toyota Prius or the Chevrolet Volt for examples - but if you look at the way an automaker designs, builds and recycles its products, then BMW is the top dog.

That declaration comes from the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World, which has declared BMW Group to be the "most sustainable automobile company worldwide." If this sounds familiar to you, well, perhaps you were reading the site last year or perhaps it's because BMW has won the title for five years in a row now. In fact, BMW reminds us it is the only automaker that has been listed on the Index since it was created in 1999. Guess the DJSI likes BMW's responsibility - the Germans call it Verantwortung - a lot.

Gallery: BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept

[Source: BMW]
Continue reading Dow Jones names BMW the greenest automaker, again

Dow Jones names BMW the greenest automaker, again originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Sun, 06 Sep 2009 16:27:00 EST.
Echoing the design of Richard Jenkins' Greenbird, the wind-powered vehicle that set a land-speed record of 126.1 miles per hour earlier this year, we'd like to present a conceptual design for a BMW Blue Dynamics Land Yacht by Stefan Radev. Purely an exercise in "what if?" the renderings show a premium version of a super-sleek sail car that combines the "distinctive style and emotional character" of a BMW with the "exclusiveness of a yacht" and a zero-emission power source.

The virtual concept allows access to the cockpit through an elevating windscreen, and the rigid sail can be moved automatically or manually. While the car only exists in computer form today, you can see the optimism of the designer in this image of the dashboard. There's a wind direction dial and a spedometer - which goes up to 420 km/h. Radev's original description of the Land Yacht is after the jump.
BMW delivered 500 electric MINI Es earlier this summer and recently announced its first two hybrid models, the X6 and 7 ActiveHybrids. Nonetheless, O'Donnell indicated that the diesels are better suited to some of the larger models than the hybrids or electrics. At this point, diesels fit BMW's performance image better than the other options.

For example, the 335d that launched late last year matches the performance of the original M3 while offering vastly better fuel efficiency. BMW doesn't typically break out individual model sales but O'Donnell indicated that since the beginning of 2009, over 2,600 diesel 335ds and X5s have been sold. O'Donnell indicated that a 5-Series diesel may be coming eventually as well. This will likely happen when the new 5-Series sedan launches next year.

O'Donnell made it clear that BMW was committed to pursuing a number of technical paths including electric, hybrid and hydrogen. However, O'Donnell expects diesel penetration in segments like the X5 to hit 20-30% in the coming years.

[Source: BMW]
BMW remains firmly committed to diesel in America originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 18:50:00 EST. Aston Martin may not be the only premium European automaker interested in Toyota's innovative iQ microcar. According to Inside Line and Autocar in the UK, BMW and Toyota are in talks to collaborate on future small cars based on the Mini and iQ platforms. BMW may possibly use the interior and diminutive platform from the Japanese automaker's next-gen iQ for its long-rumored Isetta revival, possibly with an electric powertrain.

In return, Toyota would gain access to the German automaker's Mini division - specifically the Coupe and Roadster that were recently shown in concept form ahead of their expected debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September - though its not currently clear what Toyota would do with them. Neither company has confirmed these reports, so we're currently taking this rumor with an appropriately large grain of salt.

After several months of speculation and official teases for the past week, we now finally have all the details on the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept that BMW will show in Frankfurt in a couple of weeks. The speculation about the concept's powertrain has gone in several directions, almost all of which were correct. The new concept is a plug-in hybrid with a three cylinder turbo-diesel engine. Conceived with the idea of melding the performance of an M3 with exceptionally low fuel consumption, BMW claims a 0-62 mph time of 4.8 seconds while scoring 62.6 mpg (U.S.) on the EU combined test cycle.

There has been considerable speculation that future BMWs would go to smaller engines including a three cylinder. The concept uses a 1.5-liter turbodiesel that is essentially half of the fabulous 3.0-liter found in the 335d. The triple is rated at a hefty 163 hp with peak torque of 214 lb-ft. The engine is paired with a 6-speed DCT derived from the unit used in the M3 and Z4.

Adding fuel to the recent reports that BMW would not continue developing the two-mode hybrid system that will debut soon in the X6, the concept uses a new strong hybrid system. The new system is a further development of the mild hybrid that is debuting in the ActiveHybrid 7. As in the 7, a more powerful 33 hp electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and transmission. A second 80 hp motor provides drive to the front axle. The total net output of the drive system is 356 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Continue reading after the jump

Next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW will be rolling out an extra high mileage Efficient Dynamics Edition of its 320d sedan. Like most European BMWs, this one is powered by a diesel engine that helps it get to 57.36 mpg (U.S.) on the EU combined driving cycle with CO2 emissions of just 109 g/km. This new edition of the 320d gets a number of optimizations to reach these lofty numbers. Under the hood is the mid-range 163 hp single turbo version of BMW's 2.0-liter four cylinder diesel. It sends power through a 6-speed manual transmission and the ED edition gets a taller final drive ratio.

It takes less effort to move this 3-series through the air as the body has been lowered and new low drag wheels are fitted, bringing the drag coefficient down to 0.26. Parasitic losses are reduced through the use brake energy regeneration and electric power steering. Even with all the attention to efficiency, the 320d still gets to 62 mph in a very respectable 8.2 seconds. Perhaps if Munich offered up this model to Americans, in addition to the 335d, the company might have more success with diesel vehicles here.
