General Motors might start making the Cadillac ELR extended-range plug-in hybrid coupe late next year for a 2014 model-year debut, GMInsideNews.com reports, citing unnamed "product development sources."

The ELR will use a powertrain similar to the one in the Chevrolet Volt, though the ELR's powertrain is expected to have a longer electric-only range than the current range of about 35 miles. ELR sales in Europe and China should follow the North American debut by about a year.

GM is hoping that the ELR will build on some recently-achieved sales momentum for the Volt, which was introduced in late 2010. The automaker sold a monthly record 2,289 Volts in March. Last month, that number dipped to 1,462 units, though that was still triple the figures from a year earlier.

Last August, GM confirmed that the ELR would be produced, and Bloomberg News reported at the time that the car would cost less than the base model Tesla Model S, which costs $57,400. GM representatives have not yet responded to a request for comment about the price and we will update this post when we hear something.

The ELR was originally known as the Converj when it was introduced as a concept vehicle at the 2009 North American Auto Show in Detroit.
Cadillac ELR extended-range plug-in could debut in 2014 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 01 May 2012 17:50:00 EST.
Our spy photographers managed to spot something curious (and decidedly hilarious) recently. General Motors has been busy testing what would appear to be Chevrolet Volt models with massive 20-inch wheels and tires in place of the low-rolling resistance pieces on the stock plug-in.

Why? Guesses are slim at the moment, but one hypothesis is that this is actually our first glimpse at a Cadillac Converj test mule. That vehicle will make use of an altered version of the Voltec drivetrain found in the Chevrolet, albeit bolted to flashier wheels. The luxury hybrid has been an on-again-off-again affair for General Motors since the concept first rolled across the stage at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Last we heard, the Converj is on track for launch in either 2013 or 2014. If true, now would be the time to begin working out any engineering bugs on the rumored Voltec 1.5 system. With luxury buyers more willing to hand over stacks of cash for new technology, the Converj could make quite a bit more sense to buyers than the Volt. Or bolting chrome dubs to a hybrid, for that matter.
Is this dub-rockin' Chevrolet Volt actually a Cadillac Converj in disguise? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 07:47:00 EST.
Tesla's Model S, the BMW i3, the Cadillac ELR, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell and the Ford C-MAX Energi are the finalists for Green Car Journal's 2012 Green Car Vision awards. The winner of the award, which is given to the most innovative "green vehicle" that's either in its demonstration phase or nearing its public launch, will be named at the Washington Auto Show on January 26.

Of the finalists, two - the Tesla and the BMW - are pure battery electric vehicles that are scheduled to be available for the 2013 and 2014 model years, respectively. The C-MAX is a plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle slated for the 2013 model year, while the Cadillac - expected as a 2014 model year - uses an extended-range plug-in hybrid powertrain similar to that of the Chevrolet Volt. The F-Cell hydrogen fuel-cell electric, which has been available in limited numbers for lease in Southern California, is slated for a 2014 model year debut.

"It's no surprise that electric drive continues to dominate the thoughts of automakers as they look to the future," writes Green Car Journal, which hands out the award. "While all five finalists integrate electric drive, they power their motors in distinctly different ways."

Last year's Green Car Vision award was won by the Ford Focus Electric, while the Nissan Leaf won in 2010. The Chevy Volt won in 2009. Who should win this year? Take our poll after the jump.

It's the eve of the Detroit Auto Show, and Cadillac officially kicked things off tonight by unveiling its 2013 ATS sedan at Detroit's College for Creative Studies. Why CCS? Many of the college's graduates go on to work in areas of automotive design, and as Ed Welburn, General Motors' Vice President of Global Design, tols us, over 170 CCS graduates currently work within the larger GM design team, 20 of which directly worked on the ATS project. After getting our first impressions of the ATS in the flesh, we must indeed applaud those designers.

The ATS rides on an all-new rear-wheel-drive platform, and the end result is car that's about eight inches shorter in length than the larger CTS sedan. Cadillac's Art & Science design language has been updated for the smaller sedan, with angular lines and flat surfaces found throughout the four-door's styling. Sure, Cadillac is quite proud of the way the ATS looks, but what's most important about this car is its performance. After all, the ATS will go head-to-head with the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, so on the road, it has to be good.

The ATS is around 100 pounds lighter than a comparable Audi A4, while packing a more powerful engine lineup.

A key factor to the ATS' development was lightness, and GM's North American President, Mark Reuss, stated that the new sedan will be "the most mass-efficient car in the segment." Weighing in at less than 3,400 pounds, the ATS is around 100 pounds lighter than a comparable Audi A4, while packing a more powerful engine lineup. The base engine is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four, putting out 200 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque, which should be good for over 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The real points of interest are the new turbocharged 2.0-liter four and 3.6-liter V6. The up-level turbo four should be good for around 270 horsepower, and the larger direct-injected V6 will send 318 hp to the ground. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, and both rear- and all-wheel drive will be available.

The ATS will get a diesel engine in its first life-cycle.

During the presentation, Reuss also confirmed that the ATS will get a diesel engine in its first life-cycle, though specific details are unavailable as of this writing. We know that GM is already working on a small diesel mill for the Cruze sedan, so the new oil-burning ATS could use a version of this engine, if not the same exact one.

As for how the ATS will perform on the road, we'll have to wait until we get our first stint behind the wheel later this year, but things do indeed look promising. In addition to a 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, the ATS will use GM's Magnetic Ride Control, and will have "the best steering I've ever tested," as Reuss stated. Vice President of Cadillac Marketing, Don Butler, says the ATS' key development themes were to make it "nimble, quick, [and] fun."

It certainly sounds promising, and if all this goodness comes to live out on the pavement, we only have one thing to say: Bring on the V.
Continue reading 2013 Cadillac ATS debuts in Detroit, diesel engine confirmed

2013 Cadillac ATS debuts in Detroit, diesel engine confirmed originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 08 Jan 2012 23:57:00 EST.
How would you feel about a Cadillac with a diesel engine? Those of you in America shouldn't bother answering that question, however - it's strictly for the Europeans. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Cadillac's VP of marketing said that a diesel is "under consideration for vehicles sold outside the United States," with its U.S. chances going only so far as "a potential hedge." We've heard something like this since at least 2007 from the company. Is it for real this time?

When committing to the best fight against its rivals overseas, Cadillac's rep said, "if that means making the right powertrain choices, then those are the choices we will have to make." No mention was made of Opel's diesels or whether General Motors would choose to develop something new, but the German subsidiary has done well with oil-burners in the Insignia, and a trial of diesels in Caddys could help use up the allotment that Saab won't necessarily be needing.
Cadillac diesel back on the table originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 27 Nov 2011 08:43:00 EST.
General Motors has formally established its first-ever car-sharing gig by signing a deal with peer-to-peer specialist RelayRides. GM's head of business development initiatives, Bob Tiderington, remarked:

We could stand on the sidelines and watch or we could choose to participate and try to make it into a favorable business model, which in this particular case we have.

General Motors intends to adapt its OnStar tech to facilitate peer-to-peer car sharing through RelayRides. With OnStar in their vehicle, owners wishing to join the RelayRides car-sharing program will no longer have to install a separate device that allows entry and use of the vehicle.

When the peer-to-peer scheme kicks off in early 2012, all General Motors vehicles built after 2010 and equipped with OnStar will be peer-to-peer-ready, says Tiderington. That's approximately 1.7 million vehicles that could transform into peer-to-peer automobiles overnight, at least in theory.

The breakthrough here is that RelayRides will no longer have to equip participating vehicles with an add-on device that lets a renter access it with a membership card. With OnStar, the service can be turned on with no more than a couple of movements and clicks of a mouse.
Continue reading GM, RelayRides using OnStar to open up peer-to-peer car-sharing

GM, RelayRides using OnStar to open up peer-to-peer car-sharing originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 11:45:00 EST.
It's safe to say that Mark Modica at the National Legal and Policy Center is no fan of the Chevy Volt. He calls sales of the vehicle "horrible" and says that publications like Motor Trend have lost credibility in praising GM's plug-in hybrid.

Now that the General has announced that the Volt will get an upscale cousin in the form of the Cadillac ELR Coupe, is it safe to assume that Modica is not a fan? Yes:

The decision to clone the Chevy Volt is perplexing. There is not enough demand for one Volt badged under the Chevy name, why add a Cadillac version?

Modica voices suspicion that creating the plug-in Cady will require a lot of taxpayer dollars in the form of green energy grants and loans. He also cites those federal dollars as the reason why GM hasn't kicked about rising CAFE requirements. Modica states that the decision to build the ELR coupe must be political and, "could not be based on economic considerations."

Of course, it could be that GM made the calculation that potential Cadillac owners are more willing to cover the cost of the technology involved in a car like the ELR than the average Chevy buyer. Offering another plug-in model could expand the pool of buyers and actually drive down the cost of batteries and other expensive components. GM might also feel that the car is an attractive proposition to high-end green shoppers who might otherwise purchase a Tesla Model S.

These are all options, right? Nah, must be politics.

A critical take on the Cadillac ELR Coupe originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 20:03:00 EST.
According to The Detroit Bureau, Cadillac is aiming to produce a new high-end flagship on the massive Omega platform. The news comes in the wake of the exuberant public reaction to the company's Ciel Concept, and General Motors says that a hard-top version of the lengthy convertible is already in the works. We may see that concept in as little as a few months. While General Motors is being fairly tight-lipped about the vehicle's actual production schedule, The Detroit Bureau reports that the new Omega may land in dealerships by 2015 at the latest.

But that's not the only news from Cadillac. The company has also made it clear that buyers can expect to be able to snap up a range of hybrid vehicles from the luxury automaker. While that includes efforts like the upcoming Volt-based ELR, the brand intends to flex its tech muscles with multiple hybrid technologies in the near future. The Detroit Bureau hypothesizes that Cadillac may dabble in incredibly efficient vehicles as well as high-performance hybrids similar to what Porsche is currently producing.
Cadillac likely to approve flagship, more hybrid models originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 16:01:00 EST.
The Cadillac Ciel concept is a convertible showstopper that wowed crowds at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Not surprisingly, Jay Leno managed to secure some talking time with General Motors VP of Global Design Ed Wellburn, and the two chatted about the ultimate Art and Science-mobile while Leno got a look at some of its features.

The Ciel concept is powered by a 425-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that's paired with a lithium-ion battery pack powering an electric motor. Basically, it's one of the best-looking hybrid vehicles on the planet at the moment, and it's even more intriguing when Wellburn shows off the rear power suicide doors.

It may be wearing a different badge, but Cadillac has seemingly built a modern-day homage to the fourth-generation Lincoln Continental. Click past the jump to see what we're talking about.
Continue reading Jay Leno and GM design boss Ed Welburn peruse the Cadillac Ciel concept

Jay Leno and GM design boss Ed Welburn peruse the Cadillac Ciel concept originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 09:51:00 EST. Cadillac has chosen the backdrop of this week's classic car festivities in Monterey, California to debut a new concept convertible called the Ciel, which means "sky" in French. The four-seat, four-door drop top was designed to be the ultimate carriage for a drive up the coast, as well as hints at Cadillac's aspirations to offer flagship luxury products in the future.

The Ciel is powered by a 425-horsepower, twin-turbocharged version of GM's 3.6-liter V6 engine with direct injection that's augmented by a hybrid system using lithium-ion batteries. Those massive 22-inch wheels may not look that large because the Ciel itself is a big boat with a wheelbase 12 inches longer than a CTS sedan and overall length cresting 200 inches. Cadillac says the car's shape is more natural and organic than its current design language, perhaps expressing more Art than Science with smoother lines and softer curves than we're used to seeing. We particularly like the slightly rising chrome accent line along the rocker panels that stretches the length of the Ciel.

Exterior aside, inside the Ciel is where we want to be. Passengers are absolutely coddled in their individual bucket seats with unique niceties like pull-out blankets to ward off an evening's chill, aromatherapy controls in the armrests and a drawer containing sun screen, sun glasses and a towel. Of course, technology is ever-present in the cabin with each seat having its own suite of connectivity options and the center dashboard being topped with an inductive charging surface.

General Motors has confirmed production of the Voltec-powered Cadillac ELR coupe. Though the automaker didn't officially announce pricing for the on-again, off-again angular coupe, Bloomberg claims an unidentified source close to the project revealed the Cadillac ELR's price will undercut the $57,400 Tesla Model S.

How much less? Well, Green Car Reports is expecting the ELR's MSRP to be in the ballpark of $49,900, with options adding up to $8,000 to that base price. But our guess is that the plug-in ELR will be priced in the mid-$50,000 range. Eric Noble, president of The Car Lab, an automotive consulting firm, told Bloomberg:

This is premium technology, Cadillac is a premium brand, and buyers of Cadillacs will expect to pay premium prices. That resolves one of the problems that General Motors has had with Volt, which is that it's a $40,000 small Chevrolet sedan.

According to Bloomberg, the ELR will be approximately the same size and at least as quick as the Chevrolet Volt. As expected, the ELR will be built alongside the Volt at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. We reckon the ELR will launch in mid-to-late 2013.

Cadillac ELR to cost less than $57,400 Tesla Model S originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 14:02:00 EST.
Cadillac has just announced that the production version of its 2009 Detroit Auto Show show star, the Converj Concept, is on the way. Dubbed ELR and borrowing technology from the Chevrolet Volt, the on-again, off-again angular coupe had been rumored anew in the last few days. Now, Cadillac has officially confirmed that development of the extended-range electric coupe is already underway.

While no specs are being given, Cadillac is confirming that the ELR will use a version of the same Voltec drivetrain as the Volt, though probably v1.5, and the on-board generator will again be a gasoline four-cylinder engine.

The Wreath and Crest brand isn't giving much insight as to why the letters E-L-R have been chosen, only saying they want to "indicate the car's electric propulsion technology" and remain consistent with the brand's three-letter naming scheme. Maybe they stand for "Electric Luxury Ride," or maybe someone over at General Motors is a big Everybody Loves Raymond fan. What do you think ELR stands for? Have your say in Comments.
Continue reading Cadillac confirms production ELR coupe using Chevy Volt technology

Cadillac confirms production ELR coupe using Chevy Volt technology originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 07:49:00 EST.

Unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, the Cadillac Converj concept is perhaps General Motors most on-again, off-again vehicle in recent years. Based on the Chevrolet Volt, the Converj is a plug-in hybrid coupe with chiseled lines and a Wreath and Crest badge.

This production/non-production saga continues with Green Car Reports claiming "an inside source at General Motors" has confirmed the Converj is back on, meaning Cadillac is gearing up to launch the plug-in hybrid in 2013 or 2014. GCR's source says the production Converj - likely to end up with a three-letter model designation - will get a "generation 1.5 Voltec" propulsion system. If true, then the extended-range coupe will feature a slightly modified version of the powertrain that currently resides in all Chevy Volts.

We certainly have our doubts on this one, but there are two reasons to keep hope alive that the Converj will indeed make it to production. First, Green Car Reports told AutoblogGreen that the unnamed source, "has been completely on the money in the past." Second, a plug-in Cadillac makes more financial sense than a Chevy Volt. We'll wait for word from GM before we know if we should be waving hello or goodbye to the Converj this time around.

Cadillac Converj gets production green light again? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 18:03:00 EST.
In early March, we reported that General Motors was toying with the idea of expanding its plug-in hybrid vehicle lineup. At the time, the Cadillac SRX crossover was rumored to be a candidate for plug-in technology. During an interview with AutoblogGreen, Jon Stec, fuel system integration engineer for the Chevrolet Volt, told us the following:

We've got another plug-in coming, which is the 166, the SRX, which is the same basic technology.

However, a GM spokesman on the call clarified that a SRX PHEV program did not exist and has never officially existed

Now, it seems The General may have pulled the plug on the PHEV SRX. According to Reuters, GM has canceled plans to develop a plug-in hybrid based on the Cadillac SRX crossover, deciding that the project was not financially viable. Reuters cites three unidentified people with "direct knowledge" of the project, two of which confirmed that plans for a plug-in SRX could be revived when Cadillac's aging crossover gets an overhaul. For now, it looks like the plug-in SRX will rest in peace.

All right, so maybe what sounded like a clear statement the other day isn't all that clear. We're talking about this post, when a General Motors engineer, while talking about the Chevy Volt, told AutoblogGreen that, "We've got another plug-in coming, which is the 166, the SRX, which is the same basic technology."

The "same basic technology," huh? So, does that mean the Cadillac SRX crossover will get a 35-ish-mile electric-only range from a Voltec powerplant like what's in the Volt? Not really. A source with GM told us that:

As for the SRX, just to be clear, if such a program were to exist (and nothing has been announced to that effect) it probably wouldn't be using the Voltec powertrain as implied by your lead.

As chief engineer Lyndon Schnieder told us in 2009 when the SRX came to the Detroit Auto Show, "there is no architectural reason the Two-Mode hybrid won't fit [in the SRX]." Sure, the plug-in Two-Mode program was officially canceled after that, but we think we can smell the pieces here for a two-mode PHEV (perhaps with an 8 kWh battery pack?) that is still being worked on within GM. After all, the hints were there all along, weren't they? Think so.

It's never been a secret that General Motors wants to expand the plug-in hybrid technology from the Chevrolet Volt to other models and the Cadillac SRX crossover has been one rumored candidate and today, during an interview about the powertrain used in the Volt (specifically the gas tank, which we'll have more about later), Jon Stec, fuel system integration engineer for the Volt, said the following:

We've got another plug-in coming, which is the 166, the SRX, which is the same basic technology.

Even though the SRX would make a great platform for a plug-in powertrain, either by converting the current model or redesigning it for electric mobility - a GM spokesman on the call clarified that a SRX PHEV program does not officially exist, but we look forward to the day when everyone just opens up about where the Volt's guts go in the GM family.

As to what 166 means, we're not sure, but a few years ago the number was apparently used as a code name for a sedan built on the midsize Epsilon platform.
2011 Chevrolet Volt charging port - Click above for high-res image gallery

The more vehicles General Motors is able to build using the battery technology pioneered in its 2011 Chevrolet Volt, the better chance the automaker has of earning a return on its significant investment into the electrically driven automobile. It's the classic economies of scale issue... but what is the next logical vehicle application?

While many of the early prognostications pointed to a Voltec-powered Cadillac, a report from AutoWeek says GM CEO Dan Akerson is suggesting a minivan may come first. There's also some talk that an unknown hatchback is in the works (yes, the Volt is indeed a hatchback that's shaped to look more like a sedan, but whatever).

Also notable are Akerson's expectations that at least 10-percent of all GM production will be hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles within 10 to 15 years. Akerson wants each of the automaker's four core divisions - Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet (check) and GMC - to have a vehicle using Volt technology, though no timeframe for that expansion has been given.

In other Volt news, Akerson told reporters at the 2011 Automotive News World Congress that the General is on track to sell 25,000 Chevrolet Volts for the 2011 model year, which is a sizeable increase from the 10,000-20,000 units expected as production began.

Moving past the ever-present greenery, Akerson and GM North American President Mark Reuss both stated that the company is putting some of its next-generation truck programs on the fast-track. We'd imagine that means we'll see new fullsize pickups from Chevy and GMC sooner rather than later.

2010 Cadillac SRX 2.8T - Click above for high-res image gallery

Remember the Cadillac Converj, the beautiful plug-in hybrid concept that General Motors was going to build but then decided against bringing to market? That program is still as dead as ever (at least as far as we know), but Reuters is reporting that the luxury marque is still interested in putting a PHEV powertrain into one of its vehicles, in this case a version of the Cadillac SRX crossover. According to Reuters sources, the PHEV SRX would share some of the technology from the Chevrolet Volt and from the plug-in hybrid SUV programs that Buick and Saturn worked on.

This is not the first time the SRX has been targeted for a greening. Back in April 2009, we heard that the Cadillac SRX was supposed to get GM's two-mode hybrid powertrain installed, but that never happened. In this industry, a lot of rumors float around about potential green vehicles that may or may not be debuting at an auto show in the near future. That Volt-like Chevy Amp rumor from earlier this week is probably not going to happen, for example. Our sources tell us that no plug-in SRX will be shown at the Detroit Auto Show in January, but we might see it in 2011. Maybe.
Amp Electric Vehicles continues its quest to stand on the shoulders of industry giants with proven track records. In this latest round of hirings, Amp has once again chosen to bolster its staff with top auto execs as it eyes increased production and sales of its vehicles. As Amp president Steve Burns told us in the past:

We've been kind of non-automotive. What we've been doing is layering in a lot of automotive executives. A lot of 30-year executives have been coming in because they're available. There was a lot of brain drain.

This time around, Amp has chosen to appoint James Taylor as its new vice chairman and chief executive officer (CEO). Taylor's extensive experience in the automotive industry includes heading up the Cadillac and Hummer divisions while working with General Motors. In addition, Amp selected Joseph Paresi as chairman of the board. In the past, Paresi held positions such as director of technology at Lockheed Martin and executive vice president of L-1 Identity Solutions.

Just in case you're wondering, Amp Founder and current CEO, Steve Burns, is not leaving the company. Burns will become Amp's president and focus his attention on fulfilling current orders and signing deals with new customers.

Cadillac, usually an automaker that likes to go big, has taken a stab at scaling things back with the 2010 Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept unveiled at the 2010 LA Auto Show today. The Urban Luxury Concept is a vehicle designed for people who live in a city and need a smaller vehicle but don't want to compromise on the upscale tech.

The Urban Luxury Concept is filled with touch screens and projected displays in addition to high-end trim materials likecarbon-colored wood, aluminum and ceramic. Those screens and displays also allow for more interior space, which is ultra important since this Caddy is a mere 151 inches long, 68.1 inches wide and 56.9 inches tall. Cadillac is toying with the very limits of its Art and Science ethos by compressing luxury, technology and design into this tight package.

Since this is designed to be a small city car, the powertrain is also efficient. Go-motivations come courtesy of a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that utilizes electric assist, start-stop, brake-energy regeneration and a dry dual-clutch transmission. It's estimated that fuel economy would be in the neighborhood of 56 miles per gallon in the city and 65 mpg out on the highway, were the Urban Luxury Concept ever approved for production... but it's not.
