The 26th annual Electric Vehicle Symposium is taking place in Los Angeles, CA this week and the biggest news items are the details on the new Toyota RAV4 EV and the SAE-approved DC fast charging combo plug. But there is much more here on the show floor, and things got off to a good start during the opening session hosted by EDTA president Brian Wynne.

Wynne claimed EVS26 is the largest EVS ever held in North America. That's not all that surprising, since it's been many years since the last time an EVS was held on this continent (EVS23 in Anaheim in 2007). Since then, EVS has traveled to Norway and China, and moves on to Barcelona, Spain next year and Seoul, Korea after that. As that Wynne made clear, electric vehicles are a global movement. Nissan has sold more than 28,000 Leafs worldwide (including 1,000 in Norway, where EVS24 was held). Other signs Wynne mentioned that EVs are making inroads into the public consciousness are China's ambitious plan to sell five million EVs by 2020, the Ford Focus Electric acting as pace car for NASCAR and BMW's huge fleet of plug-ins at the Olympics in London this summer.

EVS organizers then gave an E-Visionary award to the city of Los Angeles and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (pictured). The mayor said he was glad to receive the award, but quickly added that Angelinos still need to be encouraged to do more. "If we're the car capitol of the United States, we should be the electric vehicle capitol of the United States," he said. To that end, he talked about how BYD and Coda Automotive are located in the city, then announced that Boulder Electric Vehicle will establish a west coast manufacturing facility in a state enterprise zone in the city. From there, the company will be able to make up to 1,000 clean trucks a year, with an eye to exporting vehicles to Asia.

Then there was a wide-ranging panel on the state of the electric vehicle industry called "Electrified Transportation: A Path to Economic Prosperity and Energy Security." This was moderated by Chris Woodyard of USA Today and featured Ted Craver, the chairman, president & CEO of Edison International, Daryl Dulaney, president & CEO of Siemens Industry, Tony Posawatz, the vehicle line director for the Chevrolet Volt, and JB Straubel, the CTO of Tesla Motors. You can listen to or download the whole thing down below.
Continue reading EVS: Why LA is the right place for this year's biggest electric vehicle conference

EVS: Why LA is the right place for this year's biggest electric vehicle conference originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 09 May 2012 15:56:00 EST.
Sure, Coda Automotive happily announced its first real deliveries of its all-electric Sedan two months ago, but its been quieter since then about the problems it has had with some damaged parts were shipped over from China. A new report from Automotive News says that Coda is repairing the "minor" damage to those parts and that Coda's dealership in Los Angeles should be getting ten EVs to sell by the middle of this week. From there, production and deliveries will increase, said Coda AUtomotive CEO Phil Murtaugh. While Coda assembles the Sedan in California, the bodies and powertrains are made in China.

Murtaugh also said in a statement sent to AN that, "We have opted for a slow production acceleration in order to ensure flawless execution at every step of our operating system, which includes component supply from four continents, manufacturing operations at two locations in China and one location in the U.S., logistics pipeline and dealer delivery process."

Coda has four dealerships, all of which have vehicles for test drives, located in Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Orange County and San Diego.
Coda Sedan EV will be at California dealerships this week originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 07 May 2012 17:33:00 EST.
Who needs the federal government when you have a big Chinese company behind you?

That's what electric-vehicle maker Coda Automotive appears to be asking, now that the Los Angeles-based company has withdrawn its two-year-old request for $334 million in U.S. Department of Energy loans, according to Automotive News.

Coda didn't believe that the projected loan, part of the DOE's Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Program, was going to be funded any time soon, according to Coda senior vice president of government affairs Forrest Beanum. Coda was going to use the funds to build a factory in Columbus, OH. Beanum confirmed to AutoblogGreen that Coda withdrew its loan application about a month ago, adding that Coda would consider reapplying for a loan.

The DOE has only distributed about a third of the $25 billion originally slated for its loan program. Other alt-fuel vehicle companies are either still waiting for DOE their full allotment of funds (Fisker Automotive) or went under because the cash was never delivered (Bright Automotive).

"We waited more than two years and our business continued to evolve past the point where the application where it stood with the Department of Energy made any sense for our business model," Beanum said.

Coda earlier this week reached an agreement with China-based Great Wall Motors to develop an electric vehicle for North America, Europe and China that, the company said, would sell for less than any other EV and would be price-competitive with gas-powered economy vehicles (after incentives). Last month, Coda sold the first of its Sedan EVs to customers in California. Coda charges $39,900 for a Sedan with an official 88-mile single-charge range. It is also planning a version that costs $2,650 less that will have less range.
Coda gives up on federal government loans, for now originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 27 Apr 2012 12:06:00 EST.
This could be big. It looks like Coda Automotive's follow up to its Sedan might have an especially desirable quality: a low price tag. The California company's cooperative effort with Great Wall Motors has moved on from its LoI (Letter of Intent) status to the official we-are-really-going-forward-with-this stage. As well, the concept behind the vehicle itself has been fleshed out a bit and contracts have been signed, using the Beijing International Motor Show as backdrop.

Apparently, the plan is to combine the strengths of the two companies and develop a vehicle for North American, Chinese, and European markets that would be priced lower than any other EV on the market. Low enough, they say, to compete with entry level gas-powered cars (after government incentives). Take that, Mitsubishi i MiEV and Nissan Leaf!

While Coda comes to the table with an electric drivetrain development experience and an entrance to the U.S. market, Great Wall brings chassis development and mass-production capability - it sold 500,000 units last year and is China's fastest growing automaker. It is also, notably, the only Chinese company to have passed EU Certification standards and has been exporting to Europe since 2006.

It may take until the end of the year before concept designs are released, and several years before Job One is completed. When it finally does hit the open road, expect to see it in the U.S. with Coda branding and in China and other markets bearing Great Wall badging. Buried lede: though still unofficial, this effort may be only the first of an entire lineup of vehicles. Make your way past the break for the official press release.
Continue reading Coda teams with Great Wall to produce global, affordable EV

Coda teams with Great Wall to produce global, affordable EV originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 18:10:00 EST.
Coda Automotive has named electric-service franchiser Mr. Electric as its "preferred" installer of electric-vehicle charging stations.

Coda customers will work with Mr. Electric through the Coda dealer to set up appointments for installation as well as completing the local permitting process, Coda said in a statement last week. Mr. Electric has around 200 locations throughout the country. The agreement follows up Coda's decision to make General Electric's WattStation wall-mounted device the automaker's preferred charging station. Mr. Electric is owned by Waco, TX-based Dwyer Group, which also owns service companies such as Aire Serv, Glass Doctor, Mr. Appliance and Mr. Rooter. The company was founded in 1981.

Los Angeles-based Coda delivered Coda Sedan EVs to its first buyers last month. The Sedan, which the EPA has given an 88-mile range, is priced at $37,250. Coda also sells a $39,900 version with slightly more miles hidden in the battery.

*UPDATE: We had the price of the 88-mile version wrong. The higher-mileage, more expensive Sedan has not yet been tested by the EPA and is not yet on sale.
Continue reading Coda chooses Mr. Electric as 'preferred' charging station installer

Coda chooses Mr. Electric as 'preferred' charging station installer originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 17:47:00 EST.
In this case, the federal government sneezes, and central Ohio catches a cold.

That's the take from the Columbus Dispatch on the decision by electric-vehicle maker Coda Automotive to shelve plans to build a Columbus, OH, battery factory.

Coda said about two years ago that it would build the factory, which would've supported more than 1,000 jobs in the area. It said at the time that "Construction of the facility is contingent upon finalizing an incentive package with the state of Ohio and the approval of an application for a Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan (ATVM)." Guess what didn't happen?

Los Angeles-based Coda has been hamstrung on the proposed investment because the DOE has not yet responded to the loan request, which was filed around two years ago. Parts for the Coda Sedan are made in China, while the EV is assembled in Northern California.

Earlier this month, Coda sold its first models to California buyers. The company, which opened its Los Angeles headquarters late last year, sold its first Sedan ten days ago and was recently given an official range of 88 miles from the EPA.
Coda shelves plans for Ohio battery plant because of DOE inaction originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 16:08:00 EST.
When it came to Coda Automotive's first-ever sales of its battery-electric Sedans, it was an all-Golden State affair.

The Los Angeles-based company sold its first three vehicles last week, with a pilot from the San Francisco Bay Area named Randy becoming the official first Coda owner in Northern California. In Los Angeles, the first cars went to Carmen, "an eco-conscious advertising executive," and Coda founding investor and board member Daniel Weiss. Aside from getting their hands on the first Coda, buyers of the first 500 Sedans will get "limited edition features" including a numbered plaque on the center console and a custom key chain.

Coda, which opened its Los Angeles headquarters late last year, shipped its first vehicles from its Benicia, CA, plant earlier this month. Coda is offering test drives of the car at two Los Angeles locations as well as at dealers in the Silicon Valley, Orange County and San Diego.

The company has estimated that it will sell about 14,000 Sedans during its first full year of production and will be making 50,000 vehicles a year by 2015, according to Wards Auto, Coda sells a version of its Sedan with a single-charge range of up to 150 miles for $39,900, as well as a $37,250 version with a 125-mile single-charge range.
Continue reading Coda sells first three battery-electric cars to California customers

Coda sells first three battery-electric cars to California customers originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 10:01:00 EST.
Just days, after receiving its official EPA numbers the first Sedan from Coda Automotive has rolled off the line at the company's facility in Benicia, CA. The milestone had originally been expected to be reached as early as 2010, but as with many other automotive startups, there have been some delays. Contrary to much naysaying however - along with accusations of being part of a communists plot - Job One has now been achieved and reservation holders should soon start taking delivery of their vehicles.

The first Sedans will come with a 31-kWh battery pack and are priced (before rebates) at $37,250, a figure that Coda says makes it the least expensive electric vehicle per mile of range available today. Production of the company's 35-kWh battery model is expected later this summer. Vehicles are being sold through dealerships such as the Marvin K. Brown Auto Center in San Diego and the Del Grande Dealer Group in Silicon Valley with more locations being announced soon.

If you place a reservation through the company's website today, don't expect to be able to receive a vehicle immediately. Though Coda won't be specific about its projected production and sales volumes, it says that it will take a while to satisfy its current customer backlog. Hit the jump for the official press release along with video of the first Coda rolling out the door.
Continue reading First production Coda Sedan rolls off the line

First production Coda Sedan rolls off the line originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 08:00:00 EST.
The Environmental Protection Agency has tested the Coda Sedan and officially determined it to have the longest range for an all-electric vehicle that doesn't carry a Tesla Motors badge: 88 miles. On the EPA's test cycle, the car gets 73 miles per gallon equivalent. That breaks down to 77 in the city and 68 on the highway.

According to Coda Automotive, the Coda EV's 88-mile range is class-leading (this number is not yet up on the EPA site, but we have it on good authority), however, Coda is still using "up to 125 miles" in its marketing materials because it believes drivers will likely be able to get more than the EPA estimate with sensible driving and agreeable weather.

How does this compare with other plug-ins? Well, the Ford Focus Electric gets 105 MPGe and has a range of 76 miles. The 2012 Chevrolet Volt gets 94 MPGe, the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid gets 95 MPGe, the Nissan Leaf gets 99 MPGe and has an all electric range of 73 miles and the Mitsubishi i is rated at 112 MPGe with a 62-mile range. The long-distance runner in the EV class is the Tesla Roadster 2.0, which officially gets 119 MPGe and can go for 245 miles.

The EPA says the Coda EV requires 46 kWh of energy per 100 miles (combined), which is a bit higher than the car's competitors. The Leaf, for example, needs 34 while the Mitsubishi sips just 30 kWh.

Coda Automotive missed its deadline to sell its first production Coda Sedan battery-electric vehicles by the end of February, though the Los Angeles-based automaker is slated to deliver its first cars during the next few weeks, Green Car Reports writes. Coda spokeswoman Larkin Hill told AutoblogGreen the company is in the "very final stages of assembly in Northern California" and will have its first cars ready "very, very soon."

Coda, which has been pushing back the launch date on the car for at least a couple of years, automaker announced pricing on the sedan in November and said at the Detroit Auto Show in January that it expected to start sales in late February. That target date has slipped into history, even with this year's extra Leap day. When the car finally goes on sale, Coda will sell a version of its Sedan with a 150-mile single-charge range for $39,900 and in January said it would offer a version with a 125-mile range for $2,650 less.

The company opened its Los Angeles headquarters in November and said last fall that it had raised more than $300 million in funding since its 2009 founding. Coda last month said it would sell the Sedan through franchised dealers and not at its "experience centers" where the company educates the public about EVs. Coda is reportedly looking to have agreements with as many as 40 North American dealers by year's end.

Coda Holdings, parent company of Coda Automotive, has tapped former Saab and General Motors executive John Anderson to run aftersales operations for the Los Angeles-based electric-vehicle maker.

Anderson's title will be vice president of aftersales and customer quality experience. Anderson's three decades in the automotive industry include stints as Saab's head of aftersales, i.e. parts and services, in North America. Anderson also worked with GM on aftersales for the U.S. automaker's Chevrolet, Opel and Saab units. Thomas Hausch, senior vice president of sales, marketing and aftersales at Coda Holdings, said in a statement that Anderson, "will help us fulfill Coda's commitment to our customers and dealers, and ultimately help accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles."

Anderson joins a company that opened its Los Angeles headquarters in November in advance of the 2012 launch of the Coda Sedan. The car has a 150-mile single charge range in its $39,900 guise and also come with slightly less range for $37,250. Coda expects to be working with 40 North American dealers by the end of the year.
Continue reading Coda taps ex-GM, Saab executive John Anderson to run aftersales operations

Coda taps ex-GM, Saab executive John Anderson to run aftersales operations originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 15:58:00 EST.
To save operation costs, Coda Automotive will sell its battery-electric sedans through franchised dealers and not at its so-called "experience centers" that are designed to educate the public about EVs, Automotive News reported.

Coda CEO Phil Murtaugh estimated that a franchised dealer would need to sell about 65 cars a month to be viable, though Coda hasn't disclosed total sales targets, the publication said. Coda, which opened its Los Angeles headquarters in November, has one "experience center" at a shopping mall in Los Angeles's Century City district. Two California dealers - one in San Diego and another in San Jose - should be carrying Codas by the end of this month.

The company, which aims to have agreements with 40 North American dealers by the end of the year, is launching sales of its 150-mile-range Sedan for $39,900. Coda also said last month that it would sell a version with a slightly shorter single-charge range for $2,650 less.

Coda has raised more than $300 million since its 2009, including a $147-million round last fall. Coda Automotive parent Coda Holdings also said in January that it would operate a division that specializes in energy-storage devices to capitalize on what some analysts say will be a boom in revenue from secondary use of automotive batteries.

Coda Automotive will finally start selling its battery-electric sedan by the end of February, Coda CEO Phil Murtaugh told the Detroit News.

The Los Angeles-based company will soon have five dealers - one in San Diego, one in the San Francisco Bay Area and three others in locations that haven't been disclosed - the newspaper said, adding that Coda plans to have 40 dealers in 25 cities by year end. The company hasn't disclosed how many vehicles it plans to sell this year.

The company, which opened its Los Angeles headquarters in November, said last September that it raised $147 million in its fourth round of financing to bring its total to more than $300 million since the company's 2009 founding. Coda will sell its 150-mile-range Sedan for $39,900 and said earlier this month that it would offer a version with a slightly shorter range for $2,650 less.

Coda Automotive parent company Coda Holdings said last week that it would launch a division specializing in energy storage, as the company looks to cash in on what many believe will be a rapidly growing market for secondary use of electric-vehicle batteries. The new company, Coda Energy, will specialize in designing battery systems that may be used for on-site power supply as well as a backup power source in the event of a grid outage. Coda has an existing business partnership with its car-battery supplier Lishen, which also makes lithium-ion batteries for companies such as Apple and Samsung.

Coda Holdings, parent company of the Los Angeles-based electric-vehicle maker Coda Automotive, is launching a division specializing in energy storage as the company looks to cash in on what many believe will be a rapidly growing market for secondary use of electric-vehicle batteries.

The new company, aptly named Coda Energy, will specialize in designing battery systems that may be used for on-site power supply as well as a backup power source in the event of a grid outage. Coda has an existing business partnership with its car-battery supplier, Lishen, which also makes lithium-ion batteries for companies such as Apple and Samsung.

Coda, which sells the battery-electric five-seater Coda Sedan, is looking to take advantage of an energy-storage market that it says will jump by a factor of 100 over the next decade and will generate $122 billion in revenue during that time. The company, which opened its Los Angeles headquarters in November, said last September that it raised $147 million in its fourth round of financing to bring its total to more than $300 million since the company's 2009 founding. Coda sells its 150-mile-range Sedan for $39,900 and said earlier this month that it would offer a version with a slightly shorter single-charge range for $2,650 less.

Proponents of electric vehicles are keeping an eye on the secondary-battery market because much of an EV's cost and residual value is tied to how much its battery costs to produce and how much it can be sold for when it can no longer be used in the car.

Coda is not the only EV maker looking into the so-called secondary battery market. Nissan last week reached an agreement with ABB, the world's biggest maker of power-transmission equipment, to test used lithium-ion electric-vehicle batteries, such as those in the Nissan Leaf battery-electric vehicle, for possible energy storage uses for utility companies and community power sources. The partnership is looking to develop a 50 kilowatt-hour battery-storage prototype that would be able to power 15 homes for two hours. GM is also looking at ways to re-use Chevrolet Volt batteries.
Continue reading EV maker Coda Holdings launches energy-storage division

EV maker Coda Holdings launches energy-storage division originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 16:00:00 EST.
Will electric-car buyers trade away 25 miles of driving range in exchange for $2,650?

That's what Coda Automotive is betting on. Los Angeles-based electric-vehicle maker said this week that, in addition to offering its standard Coda Sedan battery-electric vehicle, which has a 150-mile range, for $39,900, it will also sell a cheaper version with a 125-mile range for a base price of $37,250. Both versions, which qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit in addition to more incentives in some states, will start being sold to the American public next month.

Coda announced the less-expensive version as it unveiled its Sedan at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week. The company is likely to start sales at the San Diego's Marvin K. Brown Auto Center, which also sells the Fisker Karma extended-range plug-in.

Coda was originally slated to debut the Sedan during the second quarter of 2010, but the launch has been repeatedly delayed because of quality concerns and management turnover. In November, the company cut the Sedan's base price by $5,000 and said it would offer a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the car's battery in an effort to generate demand.

Coda opened its Los Angeles headquarters in November, about two months after it opened its Coda Experience Center consumer-information store and test-drive center in L.A.'s Century City district. Coda in September also said it raised $147 million in its fourth round of financing to bring its total to more than $300 million since the company's 2009 founding.
Continue reading Coda will offer cheaper electric Sedan with less range, now starts at $37,250

Coda will offer cheaper electric Sedan with less range, now starts at $37,250 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 11:57:00 EST.
It's been a long time coming, but the $39,900 Coda Sedan will soon finally be available, and the place where it will be sold first, most likely, is the long-standing Marvin K. Brown Auto Center in San Diego. In a statement, the Chairman and CEO of the dealership, David Grundstrom, was quite optimistic about the car's prospects: "It's clear San Diegans are increasingly interested in zero-emission vehicles, and the Coda sedan will resonate with the local community." MKB also sells another plug-in option - the Fisker Karma - as well as vehicles from Cadillac, Buick, GMC, Mitsubishi and Saab vehicles.

From the sound of the press release, it appears that MKB features big in the automaker's future plans: "As Coda's first anticipated dealer partner, Marvin K. Brown would open Coda-branded showrooms throughout the county." Coda will open its first showroom in February 2012 (the Los Angeles building you're possibly thinking of was an "experience center").
Continue reading Coda's first sales of electric Sedan will probably take place in San Diego

Coda's first sales of electric Sedan will probably take place in San Diego originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 18:09:00 EST.
The greatest threat to America's automotive industry of all time has been hiding in plain sight. For years we've been watching Coda and its signature Sedan as it grew from an announcement by Miles Automotive in 2006 into its own stand-alone brand. The company has made breakthroughs and suffered setbacks, but now seems poised to actually launch a vehicle that, while it may not be able to compete stylistically with competitors like the Ford Focus Electric, will at least offer decent performance and more range for a similar price. What we didn't realize however, is that it also is the thin edge of communistic sword from China poised to separate America's capitalistic head from its democratic body.

At least, that's the way two columnists for the LA Times seem to feel about it, and who are we to argue with them? In an opinion piece penned by the duo of Greg Autry and Peter Navarro, it is explained to our oblivious selves that, although Coda is selling itself as an American company with an environmentally friendly product, it is, in reality, a tool of communism with a "Trojan horse electric car designed to carry the Chinese military-industrial complex deep into America's auto market." Yes, we're as shocked as you.
Continue reading Is the Coda Sedan a Trojan horse sent by communist China to destroy America?

Is the Coda Sedan a Trojan horse sent by communist China to destroy America? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 11:47:00 EST.
Here are two indisputable facts:

Writers for Forbes magazine have been known to seriously disparage electric vehicles.

Coda Holdings, the company behind the soon-to-arrive-but-also-seriously-delayed all-electric Coda Sedan, has had its share of problems getting the car to market.

Thus, it is with some scratching of the noggin that we present to you the news that Forbes has named Coda "One of America's Most Promising Companies." Forbes has put together a list of 100 companies that it says have, "compelling business models, strong management teams, notable customers, strategic partners and precious investment capital." And, even with the setbacks, Coda has started production, raised money and hired more people, so perhaps Forbes is seeing something others can't.

Coda is understandably happy about the selection - in a statement, Coda CEO Phil Murtaugh said the company is "honored" and "excited for this recognition." The full list is littered with software companies; Coda is the only car company represented and it came in 95th. The other transportation-related companies that made the list are Propel Fuels (#42), Sapphire Energy (#97) and ALTe (#98). For the record, Forbe's number one best awesomest Most Promising Company is Smashburger.
Continue reading Forbes says Coda is "One of America's Most Promising Companies"

Forbes says Coda is "One of America's Most Promising Companies" originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 20:04:00 EST.
A Level 2 home charging solution is a critical bit of kit for any electric vehicle manufacturer. GM offers the Voltec home charger to pair with the Chevy Volt. Nissan offers the somewhat pricey AeroVironment charging station for the Nissan Leaf. And Coda has signed on General Electric to provide electron-pushing duties for the upcoming Coda Sedan.

GE's Wattstation is a wall-mounted Level 2 charger that is designed to recharge an EV using 220V power. This will help to refill the the Coda's capacious 36-kWh battery (compared to the 24-kWh pack in the Nissan Leaf and the 16-kWh battery in the Chevy Volt) in under eight hours.

Though the Coda itself is larger than a Leaf, the larger battery should help the sedan hit a real-world range of around 150 miles. Coda recently announced a price drop in their sedan, with the base price now set at $39,900 (before any applicable adjustments). Coda has stated that production of the 2012 sedan has started, and that the car is "sold our" until next spring.
Continue reading Coda partners with GE Wattstation on Level 2 charging station

Coda partners with GE Wattstation on Level 2 charging station originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 17:53:00 EST.
