We began our Fiat 500e Los Angeles press-launch drive with 95 miles showing on our 500e's range gauge - interesting, since the car's EPA-rated range is 87 miles city/highway combined. Because the 500e's range-calculating algorithm looks at the last 100 miles, then the last 10 miles and the last five minutes, to account for recent change in energy usage, our 500e must have been hypermiled for some distance before we got into it to give us that starting point. Or the EPA's numbers are a bit conservative here.

"It handles like a heavy Fiat 500," observed my co-driver. "I like it."

We inserted ourselves into creepy-crawly LA morning traffic, then turned north up one of those twisty canyon roads where movie stars live. At the top, we headed west on the famous Mulholland Drive, and after a total of 11 miles, the last few uphill, we saw 47 miles of range remaining. Three miles further along curvy Mulholland, we were still showing 47 miles.

"It handles like a heavy Fiat 500," observed my co-driver from behind the wheel. "I like it." The 500e's heated and cooled 24-kWh battery pack is tightly packed under the floor to lower the car's center of gravity and minimize loss of cabin room. And we both agreed that the 500e was exceptionally quiet, even at wide-open-throttle.

Then, we turned downhill and started gaining range thanks to the regenerative brakes - 53 miles at 17 miles driven; 55 at 18.6 miles; 57 at 21.2. Then it was my turn to drive.
Continue reading Fiat 500e, the best EV conversion yet?

Fiat 500e, the best EV conversion yet? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 06 May 2013 12:59:00 EST.
Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne continues to believe natural gas as the most viable alternative to conventional fueling and says government should stop pushing electric-drive ahead of other advanced-powertrain choices, the Detroit News says.

Marchionne calls natural gas "the cleanest alternative available" and reiterated his longtime claim that Fiat will lose $10,000 for every Fiat 500e battery-electric vehicle the automaker sells. The CEO, of course, is running companies that sell more than EVs. The Ram 2500 Heavy Duty CNG, North America's first production compressed-natural gas pickup truck, for example. Chrysler started deliveries of that model last summer. The truck has an 18.2-gallon-equivalent CNG tank that gives 255 miles of driving range as well as an eight-gallon gas tank that will provide another 112 miles. The EPA does not calculate fuel economy for big trucks like that, but we do know that the 2500 HD burns fuel in a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine and everyday drives report mileage in the mid-teens.

For those keeping track, there are about 1,200 public and private CNG refueling stations in the US, compared with almost 17,000 plug-in charging stations, according to the US Department of Energy.
Chrysler CEO: natural gas better than electricity to move vehicles, so government should back off originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 26 Apr 2013 11:56:00 EST.
Something interesting happened on the way to make the 2014 Fiat 500e a real car. As the idea for the car was bandied about in public for many years, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne complained bitterly, saying the only reason the car was coming to market was because mean ol' California was forcing Fiat to do so. This was after he said that Fiat would lose $10,000 on each one they sell. That's all pretty boilerplate stuff. What's interesting is that Fiat has gone ahead and priced the Fiat 500e so competitively that you'd think they wanted to sell a million of these things. Or lease a million, at least.

The Fiat 500e has a bargain lease price of $199/month for 36 months with $999 down.

That's the message we take away from the surprisingly affordable lease price of $199 a month for 36 months with $999 down. Those are the same numbers as if you went in to lease a gas-powered 500 Pop. If you want to buy the little electric vehicle outright, it'll cost you $32,500, but that's before a potential $7,500 federal tax credit and - since the car will only be sold in California, at least for the first year - the state will kick in another $2,500. Fiat is also promising company rebates that could drop the price down to $20,500, which puts the 500e well into the range of most of the people we know of in the EV buyer demographic.

The 500e is officially rated at 122 MPGe in the city, with highway efficiency at 108 MPGe, for a combined 116 MPGe. The official range number is an impressive 87 miles, and from what we've seen, that might be a low estimate. Throw in up to 12 days of free rental cars through Enterprise and something called the Fiat 500e Pass program and you've got a non-Tesla EV that allows drivers a long-distance solution when needed. The electric Cinquecento goes on sale in California this summer. Want one? Have your say in Comments.
Continue reading Fiat 500e priced at $32,500, leases start at $199/month

Fiat 500e priced at $32,500, leases start at $199/month originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 00:01:00 EST.
Long before the Fiat 500 came to the US to try and capture the public's imagination, a Fiat 600 was cruising in the Shell Mileage Marathons (the precursor to today's Eco-marathons) and setting records by getting over 300 miles per gallon. The little red cutie was on display at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2013 in Houston, TX this weekend to remind the students participating in the challenge - and the public stopping by to see what all the crazy cars were about - incredible that fuel efficiency is nothing new.

"They'd crank it, run and then kill the engine and coast. Same thing they're doing here. They just did it with real cars back then."

The 1959 Fiat 600 in question is currently in the hands of Ken Smith, who maintains a website on its history. For years, the car sat a junked state near the Talladega Museum before making headlines when it was discovered in 2007. "We didn't know what it was at first," he told AutoblogGreen, but bought it anyway and discovered that it had a fuel-saving past, running in the Wood River Mileage Marathons. Those events ended in the late 1970s, but with the Eco-marathons now back in the US, Smith thought it made sense to display the car. He also showed the car at the 2012 event in Houston.

The Fiat 600 ran at least three times in the Mileage Marathons, Smith said. It managed 173 mpg in 1967, 244 in 1968 and 304 in 1973. The car looks like a normal Fiat 600, but there were serious changes made inside.

"Basically, what they did was everything that ran off the pully at the bottom, they took off," he said. "The alternator is gone, the water pump is gone, the radiator is gone. There's no fan. They used electric pumps to circulate the water, and they used a small heater core as a small radiator for the air to come through, and the air would pick up the heat and help cool the water. But they didn't run the engine that long. They'd crank it, run and then kill the engine and coast. Same thing they're doing here. They just did it with real cars back then."

Bigger trips + little electric car, = no problem. That's the message Fiat is sending with a new announcement of an agreement to offer gas-powered rentals to range-anxiety-stricken road-trippers.

The Italian automaker, which plans to debut the all-electric 500e in California this summer, has reached an agreement with car-rental giant Enterprise to offer gas-powered cars to 500e owners who want to go on longer trips, Automotive News reports. Buyers of the 500e, which has an 80-mile single-charge range, are eligible for a dozen day's worth of gas-powered car rentals a year (insurance and, of course, gas, not included). Fiat unveiled the 500e at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November and plans to detail pricing later this month.

The company isn't the first to make such an offer to EV buyers. Ward's Auto reported last month that BMW was going to enact a similar, though self-administered program, for its i3 all-electric model, though the German automaker didn't disclose usage-allowance details. And in late 2011, General Motors started this microtrend a few months after a Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in caught fire subsequent to a crash test by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) by offering gas-powered rentals to owners stricken by "fire anxiety."
Fiat 500e comes with free extra cars (well, rentals) originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 07:48:00 EST.
Last month, Consumer Reports decidedly panned the Mitsubishi i after a test drive of the small electric vehicle. The magazine doesn't dislike everything little and battery powered, though, and was quite a bit kinder to the Fiat 500e, saying it is "actually kind of a cool little car."

CR released a two-minute video for the Fiat test drive (available below) and complimented the car on its styling, with kudos given to its interior color scheme, special wheels and grille. CR noted that the car has little in the way of back-seat room and storage, but said it wasn't any worse than the regular 500 compacts.

As for performance, CR admitted that it was hard to figure out whether the 111-horsepower 500e would regularly hit its stated 80-mile single-charge range because the test drive was done in cold weather, but did say the car felt quicker than the non-turbo 500 because of the torque generated by the electric motor. In fact, CR went as far as calling the 500e "a hoot to drive." The publication criticized the Mitsubishi i for its sluggishness as well as for what CR said was the model's cheap finish.
Continue reading Consumer Reports kinda, sorta likes the electric-powered Fiat 500e

Consumer Reports kinda, sorta likes the electric-powered Fiat 500e originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 13 Feb 2013 11:50:00 EST.
The all-electric 2013 Fiat 500e probably won't turn a profit, but that doesn't mean Fiat and Chrysler engineers haven't done a good job ramping up the hatchback's fuel economy numbers. Chrysler has just announced that the little EV has been rated at 116 Miles Per Gallon Equivalent (MPGe) combined. The EV will get 122 MPGe in the city, and highway efficiency is rated at 108 MPGe. As for range - which of course varies greatly in the real world - the official number is an impressive 87 miles.

To compare, other small EVs have been rated this way (combined/city/highway):

 2013 Smart ED: 107/122/93 MPGe and a 68-mile range

2013 Scion iQ EV: 121/138/105 MPGe and a 38-mile range

2013 Honda Fit EV: 118/132/105 MPGe and a 82-mile range

 2013 Mitsubishi i: 112/126/99 MPGe and a 62-mile range

 2012 Nissan Leaf: 99/106/92 and a 73-mile range

That means that the 2013 Fiat 500e has (for now, at least) more range and highway MPGe than any other vehicles in its class. Some larger EVs can go further, of course. The official EPA fuel consumption rate is 29 kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 miles thanks to an efficient 111-horsepower electric motor. Charging the 24-kWh battery should take less than four hours from a 240-watt Level 2 source. The EV goes on sale, in California, at least, in the second quarter of 2013, and we already know the car will get a sexy introduction to the masses.
Continue reading 2013 Fiat 500e gets 116 MPGe (combined) and 87-mile range

2013 Fiat 500e gets 116 MPGe (combined) and 87-mile range originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 04 Jan 2013 18:29:00 EST.
In the 1983 Chevy Chase film "National Lampoon's Vacation," sexiness (at least of the female variety) was personified by Christie Brinkley driving a Ferrari 308 that got about 15 miles per gallon. Nearly three decades later, Fiat brand chief Olivier Francois is pitching a kinder, greener sexy.

Speaking at the Los Angeles Auto Show Wednesday afternoon in front of a screen that read "Stop Global Warming, Start Global Hotness," Francois used every innuendo he could find to put distance between what he called the "busy, shiny, goofy, blocky" aspects of green living and the battery-electric Fiat 500e that the Italian automaker will start selling in California by mid-2013. He then showed a clip of a couple of test drivers take the 500e out on a racecourse only to get derailed mid-track by an impromptu make-out session. Another 500 ad featured a clever scorpions taking the top off a supermodel.

"Isn't ugliness the worst kind of pollution," Francois asked rhetorically in front of images that included the nearly-triangular EV the Kewet Buddy. You can watch this all unfold below.

The 500e will have a 111-horsepower motor that Fiat says will deliver at least an 80-mile single-charge range. The model will also have three color packages and an interior with electric orange accents for those that can't contain themselves. As for pricing, Francois, when asked after his presentation, maintained the company's silence on the subject.
Continue reading Fiat hopes sex sells with 500e: "Stop Global Warming, Start Global Hotness"

Fiat hopes sex sells with 500e: "Stop Global Warming, Start Global Hotness" originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 11:52:00 EST.
It's bad enough incurring losses in dollars. There's no need to do it in francs, lire and pounds as well.

That's the thought process behind Italian automaker Fiat and its decision to hold off on selling a battery-electric version of its 500 compact in Europe. Fiat global brand chief Olivier Francois confirmed that the company won't distribute the 500e across the pond, according to Automotive News.

As it is, Fiat has said it will lose as much as $10,000 per vehicle sold, even with a sticker price of about $35,000. Nonetheless, the 500e will be sold in California starting in mid-2013 as a so-called "compliance vehicle" designed to meet certain zero-emissions mandates enacted by certain U.S. states.

Fiat is showing off the 500e at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week, and finally released details on the car yesterday, including that typical city driving will give drivers "greater than 100 miles" of range. The original concept version debuted at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

Fiat and its Chrysler affiliate have been relatively slow on the draw when it comes to developing electric-drive vehicles, choosing instead to focus on lighter, more technologically advanced internal combustion engines to meet upcoming, more stringent fuel-economy targets.
Fiat won't sell electric-powered 500 in Europe originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 09:52:00 EST.
Small engine, big pitch.

Italian automaker Fiat is using a new video to wax poetic about its TwinAir family of engines designed to boost performance in its smaller cars while cutting fuel use and emissions.

The three-plus-minute video, put together by Frame Communication, outlines the TwinAir engines, which range from 65 to 105 horsepower and include a turbocharged version as well as an option that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Fiat says the TwinAir engines boost fuel economy and cut emissions by 30 percent compared to similarly-sized mills while providing as much as 120 horsepower per liter of displacement. The engines are adaptable to hybrid use as well.

Fiat and its Chrysler affiliate have been eschewing electric-drive powertrains as a method of boosting fleetwide fuel economy in favor of smaller, more technologically-advanced internal combustion engines. For example, in August Fiat unveiled the turbocharged 2013 version of its 500 compact. That model features a detuned version of its 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged inline-four, which boosts horsepower and torque by 34 horsepower and 52 pound-feet from the 2012's non-Abarth version, respectively.

You can see Fiat's video below.
Continue reading Fiat shows off performance, efficiency gains of TwinAir engine

Fiat shows off performance, efficiency gains of TwinAir engine originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 15:50:00 EST.
It looks like the all-electric version of the Fiat 500 will make its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month. No word on whether Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne will bring the house down with his "we don't really want to build this car" routine.

The LA Auto Show has confirmed that the 500E will be one of the models revealed at the convention, but organizers didn't disclose further details about price, performance or potential on-sale date (best to leave that to Fiat anyhow, right?). Green Car Reports estimates that the car will be available only in limited numbers and that it will have an electric motor delivering about 100 horsepower.

Marchionne said in February that it would start making an all-electric 500 by the end of 2012, and the Italian automaker has been talking about the car since Chrysler unveiled a 500 BEV concept at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, but has been pretty mum on the subject ever since.
All-electric Fiat 500E confirmed for LA Auto Show originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 25 Oct 2012 18:31:00 EST.
It's a near-endless tale, the story of the all-electric Fiat 500. Whether you're looking back at 2010, 2011 or earlier in 2012, there's been reports and claims and stories. Today, there's more.

Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne recently spoke to the media about his companies' fuel-efficiency efforts, saying that hybrids and natural gas-powered vehicles will be coming by 2017. On the electric front, the Fiat 500 EV will be introduced in North America later this year, Marchionne said, admitting the car was being built for two main reasons: first, because California's ZEV mandates require it and, second, so Chrysler engineers learn more about electric powertrains. That sure makes it sound like Chrysler is years behind other companies, given that others have EVs on the market already. We know that Chrysler made a splash with the ENVI vehicles in 2008, but it's been relatively quiet since then.

The Fiat EV is not going to be a financial windfall. Marchionne recently said (again) that Fiat "will lose money on every car we make." The car could lose Fiat as much as $10,000 per vehicle.
Marchionne: We're only making Fiat 500 EV because California's forcing us originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 30 May 2012 15:53:00 EST.
Karabag has been selling conversions of a few Fiat models for a while now, but a new configuration of the 500, along with a low lease price, could see them moving more out the door. The new Karabag 500e makes use of the same electric drivetrain components that German forklift maker Linde Materials Handling employs to move about its precision workhorses.

The supply arrangement allows the elektrofahrzeug-maker to offer the Italian retro-cute for €34,999 ($46,000 U.S. at today's exchange rates) or lease it for a modest €299 ($393) a month. That price, they say, makes it cheaper to operate than the gas-powered version. (You can see how they calculate that at this Google-translated page from their website).

While the price may be moderate, so is the performance. The new 500e puts out a peak 28 kW (37.55 horsepower) and allows for a top speed of just 105 km/h (65 miles per hour). Acceleration is, um, leisurely, with 50km/h (31 mph) coming 8.5 seconds after lift off. The 11-kWh lithium-polymer battery is said to offer 100 km (62 miles) of range.

Linde has also lent a drivetrain to another vehicle with much (much!) better performance. The Linde E1 electric go kart has made the Guinness Book of Records by accelerating faster to 100 km/h (62 mph) than any battery-powered cart ever before: 3.45 seconds. If only it were street legal.

As regular readers know, I set out this year to interview as many Detroit automaker executives as I could at the Detroit and Chicago auto shows to get their takes on meeting future fuel economy standards. And these reports are generating a lot of comments.

For example, "Nick" responded to my Ford interviews: "I don't get how 'electrifying global platforms' is any good. They're essentially taking cars that were 100% engineered with ICE in mind, and 'adapting' them into EVs. Not an optimal solution, to say the least. You end up with a car that looks exactly like its ICE counterpart, costs $15k more, is heavy and has poor range. Tesla is a billion miles ahead of these clowns."

Nick is right that electrified conventional vehicles will be somewhat heavier and less efficient than dedicated-platform cars, but Ford has chosen the former path for its early EVs because the latter is hugely expensive. Ford (and virtually all others) believe that potential EV buyers will be willing to sacrifice some range for much more affordable prices.

The idea that designing, developing and building unique, dedicated-platform EVs instead of electrifying conventional ones would result in lower costs is completely wrong. And I'm wondering what credentials justify Nick's calling Ford's incredibly hard-working, capable and dedicated engineers "clowns." And why he thinks, "Tesla is a billion miles ahead" of them. Really? How many dedicated-platform EVs has Tesla sold?

That said, let's start our Chrysler CAFE interviews at the very top with Chrysler (and parent company Fiat) CEO Sergio Marchionne. "If you ask GM and Ford," he said, "we all have the same types of technology, and we all carry the same burden in terms of the sizes of vehicles we are manufacturing. The 50-plus miles per gallon by 2025 cannot be achieved by just redesigning established combustion technologies. We know that some type of hybrid solution needs to be implemented, and if we don't make [sufficient] changes in combustion engines, hybrids will become the mainstay in the United States. At that point, economies of scale will drive down cost. They will never be equivalent, but they will come down. But if you think we're going to get there without passing on additional costs to the consumer, I've got news for you: we will have to.
Continue reading Future Fuel Economy Mandates, Part III: Chrysler

Future Fuel Economy Mandates, Part III: Chrysler originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 16:04:00 EST.
Fiat will start building a battery-electric version of its 500 compact this year, marking the Italian automaker's entrance into the EV production market. So said Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne in an official Chrysler tweet recently that said:

Marchionne: at Chrysler we are working on an electric version of the Fiat 500 that we'll begin manufacturing later this year.

As you can read, Marchionne didn't say how many EVs would be produced or how much it would cost, though the 500 EV will likely have about 100 horsepower as well as about a 90-mile single-charge range, the website said. Marchionne once estimated that Fiat would lose about $10,000 on each 500 EV sold. Fiat hasn't put out an official statement on the model.

Fiat unveiled its 500 Elettra battery-electric concept at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, though has been relatively quiet since. A privately converted 500 EV was notably owned by now-deceased Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Earlier this month, Corrado Clini, a member of Italy's Ministry of the Environment, said Fiat missed an opportunity to gain from growing global demand for electric-drive vehicles by choosing to work on more fuel-efficient internal combustion engines instead of hybrids and electric powertrains, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Fiat will start building battery-electric 500 this year, CEO tweets originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 10 Feb 2012 17:51:00 EST.
The Fiat 500 is 139 inches of A-segment fury, with a heaping dose of cute and a dash of fuel efficiency. In fact, the manual transmission-equipped cinquecento averages 33 miles per gallon in mixed driving, which is better than most things on the road.

Impressed? Toyota isn't. The Detroit Free Press reports that the Japanese automaker told dealers at the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting in Las Vegas, NV recently that the next generation Avalon will get better fuel economy than the wee Fiat.

Since the current generation Avalon is five feet longer and considerably wider than the 500, that's an impressive claim. Heck, the Avalon is bigger than the Camry, and buyers currently have to step into a Camry Hybrid model to surpass the fuel economy numbers of the pint-sized Fiat.

The sky-high fuel economy of the Avalon wasn't the only good news Toyota delivered to dealers. The automaker reportedly informed the car-selling audience that 19 new models were coming in 2012.
Next Toyota Avalon to best Fiat 500's fuel economy? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 10 Feb 2012 09:16:00 EST.
Italian automaker Fiat SpA missed a chance to benefit from growing global interest in electric-drive vehicles by giving up on some of its advanced-powertrain development efforts in favor of trying to develop more fuel-efficient internal combustion engines. That's the feeling of Corrado Clini, a member of Italy's Ministry of the Environment, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Clini said that Fiat's hybrid-electric Multipla, which was developed in the 1990s but has long been shelved, "was more sophisticated than the Toyota Prius," and that Fiat's Magneti Marelli division was not being sufficiently utilized in the development of electric-drive components, the Journal reported.

Fiat's electric-vehicle efforts have been limited to development work on an battery-electric powered Fiat 500. While this car was never released, a specially converted 500 EV was notoriously owned by deceased Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Fiat's sister company Chrysler displayed a battery-powered 500 at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, and has said that a production model may be ready for the 2013 model year.

Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne once estimated that his company will lose $10,000 on each Fiat 500 EV sold. He also conceded in an interview with Automotive News last fall that Chrysler will need to make hybrid vehicles in order to meet progressively more stringent greenhouse-gas emissions standards in the U.S.
Italian Environment minister: Hey Fiat, you missed the boat on EVs originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 11:50:00 EST. Yahoo! Finance has thrown its hat in the top ten ring with its list of the biggest flops among all consumer goods introduced for 2011. Both the Fiat 500 and Chevrolet Volt have made it among the chosen few, rubbing elbows with such luminaries as Netflix's Qwikster and Disney's Mars Needs Moms.

Why the Volt? Yahoo! points to the vehicle's underwhelming sales, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fire investigation and misguided General Motors executives as indicators of the plug-in hybrid's failure. We think that's a bit harsh given the fact that the Volt wasn't on sale across the country for most of the year, and we've harped on how absurd the NHTSA fire issue is in the past, so we'll save the digital ink here.

And what of the Fiat 500? It's no secret the adorable Italian hatchback has missed its sales goals by a country mile. While Chrysler had hoped to move 50,000 models this year, actual U.S. sales for the year will probably end up around 20,000 units, which really isn't too bad. Those early sales targets were picked straight from the crazy buffet to begin with, and the fact that the 500 suffered production delays, dealership network woes and a botched marketing effort didn't help matters. Still, do those issues make the 500 one of the biggest product flops of 2011?

For our money, it's too early to call either of these vehicles flops - moving 20,000 relatively expensive very small cars for a new-to-the-U.S. (well, "new again," at least) brand doesn't sound too bad to us, and putting the Volt on the list when it wasn't available to most consumers strikes us as Yahoo! Finance trolling for controversy. What say you?
The Fiat 500 has been a popular vehicle to convert to electric drive - so much so that even the recently deceased Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi had one (see also here and here) - but an official 500 EV has been nothing but auto show reveals and secret tests and that's about it for the past few years. Chrysler displayed a battery-powered 500 at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show but work has continued a bit behinds the scenes since then.

As far as we know, the plan to bring a small number of 500 EVs to market sometime next year (as a 2013 model) remains in place. We've heard price suggestions from $32,000 all the way up to $45,000, and new spy shots over at AutoObserver don't shed much more light on that issue. They do show us that there's a good chance that the zero-emissions version will have a slightly different front and rear fascias; what else would the camo covers be for?

It's good to see Chrysler and Fiat continuing to test the little BEV, even though Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne once said that his company will lose $10,000 on each Fiat 500 EV sold. That's gotta hurt, but perhaps these tests are ways to reduce that number.
Fiat still working on 500 EV; could have slight external changes originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 19:41:00 EST.
This Euro VI-compliant turbo'd four-banger is designed to meet stringent emissions standards (U.S. Tier 2 Bin 5), while cranking out up to 300 horsepower. It's this engine that's expected to power the production version of the Alfa Romeo 4C and, given that it has been engineered to be mounted either in back or up front, longitudinally or transversely, it's sure to end up in other Alfa Romeo and Fiat vehicles, too. It's by no means a stretch to assume this 1.8-liter gasser will someday power at least a couple of future Chrysler vehicles, too, don't you think?
