At the SAE World Congress in Detroit this week, Nissan brought the guts of its new Pure Drive Hybrid System, a four-cylinder gas engine and 15-kW electric motor that has two clutches. The clutches on either side of the motor allows the system to use the motor for propulsion or regeneration and also result in a compact size, about the same as a conventional CVT, we were told. The system also uses a 144-volt lithium-ion battery.

As we learned in New York a few weeks ago, the first vehicle to use this motor will be the 2104 Pathfinder. The hybrid powertrain will give the Pathfinder stop-start (which Nissan calls idle stop and which is also available on the European Note, for example) and will be able to coast at highway speeds and will ever-so-gently be able to creep on battery power, for a limited distance. The electric parts help increase the Pathfinder's estimated highway mileage from 24 to 27 miles per gallon, while city numbers jump from 19 to 25. The new Pathfinder Hybrid will be available later this summer for around a $3,000 price premium. Despite a lower peak horsepower, the hybrid will offer comparable performance to the Pathfinder with a V6 engine. The hybrid gets 250 horsepower, while the conventional V6 gets 260, but the torque band and hp for the hybrid are higher over most of the range. The hybrid setup will also be used in the Infiniti QX60 Hybrid (what used to be called the JX) and who knows what else after that.
SAE World Congress: New Nissan gas-electric powerplant will boost Pathfiner, QX60 hybrids originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 20 Apr 2013 08:36:00 EST.
For those who want to cut to the chase about the latest revelations of Nissan's pending front-engine, front-wheel-drive powertrain - i.e. the FF Hybrid - it's got the same power with less fuel.

That's what Green Car Congress says, citing a presentation Nissan executive Owen Thunes, speaking at the recent SAE 2013 Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technology Symposium conference in Southern California. Thunes says the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder successor to the 3.5-liter V6 that's now in the Infiniti M hybrid (pictured) will boost fuel economy while providing a similar amount of torque. The Japanese automaker will achieve this through advancements in making the transmission more efficient and by using a smaller lithium-ion battery, making the mill lighter thriftier with gas. The drivetrain will be suitable for a wide range of cars and SUVs, Nissan says.

Last October, Automotive News reported that the FF Hybrid may debut in the Infiniti JX three-row crossover, with a new hybrid model featuring the new powertrain debuting each year.
Nissan's new front-wheel-drive hybrid system will be greener, just as powerful originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 25 Feb 2013 07:53:00 EST.
Nissan Motor Co. CEO Carlos Ghosn continues to be optimistic and ambitious about his company's mission to make Nissan and Renault electric vehicles (EVs) reach strong sales numbers in key global markets. In fact, he doesn't seem fazed that Nissan is selling fewer Leafs in the US this year compared to 2011. In fact, Ghosn retains the same mood and outlook for Nissan's overall <strike>EV</strike> sales in the US: hitting 10 percent market share by 2017 (eight percent globally), even though it's dropped to 7.9 percent in the US for the first 10 months of 2012, down from 8.2 percent at the end of 2011.

Ghosn sat down in Yokohama, Japan, at Nissan's headquarters, to answer questions from Automotive News Asia editor Hans Greimel, including how he sees the political strife between China and Japan causing anti-Japanese product backlash with Chinese consumers. It is an on-going concern, as is the financial downturn in Europe, but Ghosn sees the US market as a vital part of Nissan's near-term future.

Ghosn is not getting bummed out by lower-than-2011 sales for the Leaf in the US - reaching only 6,791 units sold through October versus the full year-target of 20,000 and the 8,048 sold in the first 10 months of last year. Global sales growth will come through mass marketing the electric Renault Zoe, three other Renault EVs, and "opening a lot of doors for the Leaf."

The Infiniti LE electric luxury car also plays into the marketing strategy.

Zero emissions, for me, is here to stay even though it's not selling as well as we thought... And this is totally normal, that we have at least one Infiniti car. It's obviously a flagship car, but it's also a car that will be developed and produced to sell.

Ghosn isn't concerned that his company has overinvested in EVs. Nissan thinks it will be selling 500,000 electric vehicles a year. For the short term, he's not backing off the claim that Nissan will sell 1.5 million electric vehicles across its brands by 2015.

As for global markets, he does see other countries as being far ahead of the US when it comes to promoting sustainability:

We're following carefully what's going on in China. We're following very carefully the new incentives that are in France to encourage electric cars. No matter what, the United States is going to have to embrace electric cars in a way that is more sustainable. Japan is already doing it.

The Leaf is making the company more competitive and "putting our act together," Ghosn said.
Carlos Ghosn remains optimistic on Nissan's EV sales forecast originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 19:31:00 EST.
Nissan sells more pure electric vehicles (EVs) than any other automaker, but the EV market remains tiny. The hybrid market, while also just a small percentage of new vehicles sold, is bigger - and it's a segment where Nissan hasn't really been playing. The Altima Hybrid, for example, was killed off last year. No one really misses it, though, because Nissan is now able to get nearly equivalent fuel efficiency ratings without a battery. There are signs that Nissan is ready to change its tune on gas-electric hybrids, though, and it starts with Infiniti.

Automotive News reports that a new Nissan-designed front-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain will likely be introduced in the Infiniti JX three-row crossover "or a similar class vehicle." Then there will be an average of one new hybrid model each year, with a plug-in version of the JX/CUV in 2015. In this way, Nissan's EV advantage could pay dividends as global fuel economy requirements continue to increase. And that's the way that Nissan will have to spin this re-entry into the hybrid market, since CEO Carlos Ghosn said in 2009 that Nissan was, "not intending to play a leadership role in hybrids. One company already assumed leadership in the technology. We want leadership on EVs."

In Japan, Nissan recently introduced the Serena S Hybrid (shown above), which uses the company's less-powerful "smart and simple" hybrid powertrain. The Serena is Japan's best-selling minivan and the new gas-electric version gets around 36 miles per gallon (on Japan's lenient test cycle). That's about a 10-percent improvement over the non-hybrid model, AN reports, and a Nissan exec tells the industry paper that the company's target is to get up to a 30-percent improvement whenever a model receives its new hybrid powertrain.
Nissan developing new hybrid tech, could debut in Infiniti CUV originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 11:35:00 EST.
In case there was ever any doubt, the Emerg-E extended-range plug-in supercar from Infiniti won't really, uh, emerge.

The new head of the Nissan luxury badge says the Emerg-E won't be built as a production vehicle, UK publication Autocar reports, citing Infiniti chief Johan de Nysschen's presentation at the recent Paris Motor Show. Instead, aspects of the concept car will be used in the powertrain and design of other models. De Nysschen specifically said the Emerg-E would offer "strong cues" in the G-series. The wireless-charging-capable Infiniti LE is still due for a launch in 2014.

Infiniti released pictures of the Emerg-E in February and a month later showed off the concept car at the Geneva Motor Show. The automaker said the Emerg-E had a 300-mile range from battery and gas tank and could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in four seconds.
Infiniti Emerg-E not going into production originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 13:54:00 EST.
To quote Bill Murray from Ghostbusters: "Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!"

That's pretty much our response to Fox Business anchor and long-time electric-drive vehicle basher Neil Cavuto plugging for plug-ins. Calling it "a plug-in that gets it," Cavuto recently praised the 2014 Infiniti LE electric vehicle, Green Car Reports notes.

The LE concept was unveiled at the New York Auto Show earlier this year and, this month, Nissan's luxury badge re-confirmed that it will start selling a production LE in 2014. The part that Cavuto is most enamored with is that, "it's a plug in that doesn't plug in at all!" Actually, Cavuto is wrong, since the LE does plug in when needed, it just offers wireless charging as well. The LE is expected to have slightly more power and torque than the Nissan Leaf.

Cavuto once called the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in "the dumbest thing I've ever seen." Check out this video clip from last year for a highlight reel of sorts for Cavuto's diatribes against the Volt, including his bizarre belief that plug-in cars kill marriages. Speaking about the LE, he says, "I think it's a game changer. It's also a marriage-saver, because no longer will couples have to fight over who forgot to plug in the electric car."
Continue reading All of a sudden, Fox's Neil Cavuto likes electric cars?

All of a sudden, Fox's Neil Cavuto likes electric cars? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 19:41:00 EST.
This summer, Audi CEO Johan de Nysschen made a surprising shift when he moved to join Nissan as the Senior Vice President of Nissan Motor Company in charge of the Infiniti division. His title and home base are not all that's different about the man who used to tout diesel powertrains above all others.

Asked by his own PR department during the 62nd Annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance last weekend if Infiniti will introduce a "halo car," de Nysschen said "absolutely." He then rattled off a number of possible powertrains for this vehicle, including compact gasoline engines and diesels. Oh, and plug-in power. Specifically, he said, "The electric powertrain is a very important part of Infiniti's progressive technology attack on the future."

This might come as a bit of a shock to readers who remember de Nysschen as the guy who harshly criticized plug-in cars back in 2009 when he called the Chevrolet Volt a "car for idiots." He later dialed this back a bit, but he's never been an EV's strongest proponent. Now that he's in the house that Ghosn built, he's singing a different tune. Watch it below.

De Nysschen isn't the first auto company executive to have a change of heart when moving to a new company. Exhibit A: Stefan Jacoby.
Continue reading New Infiniti boss de Nysschen turns over new leaf, doesn't think plug-ins are for 'idiots'

New Infiniti boss de Nysschen turns over new leaf, doesn't think plug-ins are for 'idiots' originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 09:55:00 EST.
Infiniti has re-confirmed it will sell the production version of the LE, and it has now given us a year: 2014. This makes it likely that Nissan's upscale arm will be the first OEM to sell a production inductive charging vehicle.

USAToday reports that Infiniti officials made the announcement in California alongside the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this past weekend. The high-end event is a good place to discuss launching a beefier, prettier luxury cousin to the Nissan Leaf, especially one that could have the cachet of being able to offer completely hassle-free electric miles (one you install the pads in your garage, of course). Infiniti's Ben Poore told USAToday that, "It's a new technology. We're being a little bit bold on this." The LE - which stands for Luxury, Electric - also allows standard, wired charging.

While we don't know what the specs will be for the production version, the LE Concept has a Leaf-like 24kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 100-kw electric motor that offers 134 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. That's 24 hp and 30 lb-ft more than the Leaf. The LE will be most likely be built at Nissan's factory in Smyrna, TN, the one that will start making the Leaf later this year.

The race is on to bring wireless charging to the masses, with companies like Mitsubishi and Audi working privately and the U.S. government dabbling as well.
Infiniti sets 2014 due date for all-electric LE with wireless charging originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 20 Aug 2012 12:07:00 EST.
As with one of those blockbuster three-team NBA trades that actually improves the fortunes of every team involved, a report in Autocar indicates that Renault, Infiniti and Lotus are in talks that could benefit both manufacturers and enthusiasts. Renault is considering a production version of the devil-in-blue Alpine A110-50 concept but has said that it "probably needs more than the Renault-Nissan Alliance on its own." Enter Lotus, whose Evora platform could supply the running bits for the mid-engined Alpine revival.

That same Evora platform, in range-extended 414E concept form, is the basis for the Infiniti Emerg-E concept. Even though a decision hasn't been made on the Emerg-E's production, it is still being developed and the company has admitted that it "could be built in Britain." For its part, Lotus has said that it's ahead of schedule on the Evora 414E, with its 408 horsepower, 738 pound-feet of torque and 30-mile electric range. Development funds from both Renault and Infiniti could help make all three cars a closer possibility.
Lotus could build production versions of Renault Alpine, Infiniti Emerg-E originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 09:53:00 EST.
Nobody ever said that pushing the boundaries of technology was easy. Today's latest crop of hybrid and electric vehicles are highly complicated pieces of machinery loaded with computer controls, miles of wiring and sometimes multiple powerplants. As you might imagine, not everything always goes smoothly when engineers are perfecting these various systems before they reach production.

A shining example can be seen in the video after the break. There you'll see Infiniti, which was the official sponsor of the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2012, show off some of its latest concept and production vehicles. One of the highlights of the event this year was a run up the hill by a working prototype of the Emerg-E Concept. Sadly, not everything went according to plan.

In the official video released by Infiniti, you can see both the FX Sebastian Vettel Version and the Emerg-E take off from the starting line. What you won't see, at least not in Infiniti's video, is the Emerg-E break down and require a tow before the end of the course. Of course, in this day and age of HD-capable smartphones in the pockets of almost everyone, that doesn't mean there's no video at all...

Scroll down below to see how it all went down. In any case, it's important to remember this is only a prototype and not a final production machine.
Continue reading Infiniti Emerg-E prototype has trouble at Goodwood

Infiniti Emerg-E prototype has trouble at Goodwood originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 05 Jul 2012 19:56:00 EST.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed isn't the first place green car enthusiasts go to for their gas-saving entertainment. But hybrids and plug-in vehicle have been present here and there in recent years - we've seen the Honda CR-Z RR Concept, Renault Z.E. concept and Tesla Roadster - and EV fans will get another chance this year when a functional Infiniti Emerg-E attempts the famous hill climb.

According to Green Car Reports, Red Bull Racing's Mark Webber will drive the Emerg-E at Goodwood, so it's in good hands. The Emerg-E was unveiled just a few months ago at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, sporting a 400-horsepower range-extended powertrain. We doubt the car's 300-mile range will be tested, but perhaps we will get to see a piece of the car's impressive 0-60 miles per hour time of four seconds at Goodwood. The festival starts June 28 but you can see a video tease of the Emerg-E below right now.
Continue reading Infiniti Emerg-E prototype will go hill climbing at Goodwood 2012

Infiniti Emerg-E prototype will go hill climbing at Goodwood 2012 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 15 Jun 2012 15:49:00 EST.
The first all-electric Infiniti, which is supposed to hit the market in 2014, will likely be built at the same Tennessee factory as the Nissan Leaf EV, Plugin Cars reported.

Two Nissan spokesmen told the Chicago Tribune that the company's factory in Smyrna, TN, was the most likely place where the Infiniti LE battery-electric would be built. Nissan is expected to start U.S. production of the Leaf at that factory by the end of the year, and the Infiniti will use the same (or, at least, very similar) battery pack that the Leaf does.

Infiniti, which showed off a concept version of the EV at the New York Auto Show last week, said the car will have about 22 percent more horsepower and 14 percent more torque than the Leaf, but will also be larger - about the same size as the Infiniti G sedan.

Like the Leaf, the car will have a range of around 100 miles, according to the automaker - though the EPA pegs the Leaf's range closer to 74 miles. No price has been set, though Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn said that the company will likely be able to lower the price of the Leaf once it's produced in the U.S. What that means for the upscale LE - which stands for "luxury electric," telling you which is more important - is not yet known.
Infiniti LE will likely be built alongside Leaf in Tennessee originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 08:04:00 EST.
Nissan last week announced connectivity improvements for some of its models, including the upgraded Altima that is set to debut this summer as well as the Leaf battery-electric vehicle.

The Japanese automaker, which made the announcements at the New York Auto Show, said its NissanConnect system will launch in the new Altima this July. The system will include Google search and Google navigation capabilities as well as access to Pandora Internet radio.

Additionally, the Nissan Leaf will have improvements to its Carwings communications system, including algorithms that will improve accuracy in predicting the battery's driving range. Next year, Nissan will start installing the Intel-developed duel-display entertainment-communications system in its Infiniti vehicles.

The Altima "is our best-selling car in the United States," Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn said. "It's absolutely essential that this car plays an important role as, if not the most sold car in this segment, at least the second-most sold car in this segment."

Ghosn added that Nissan expects to be able to lower the price of the Leaf in the U.S. once the car and batteries start being assembled in Tennessee later this year.

Nissan unveiled the 2013 Altima in New York last week. The car, which Nissan says will get an estimated 38 miles per gallon, will start at $21,500. The fuel-economy gain - the four-cylinder 2012 Altima gets a combined 27 miles per gallon, according to the EPA - stems from improvements to its transmission's gear ratios as well as the fact that the car is about 80 pounds lighter than the previous model.
Continue reading Nissan announces connectivity improvements for Altima, Leaf; should provide better range estimates

Nissan announces connectivity improvements for Altima, Leaf; should provide better range estimates originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 18:05:00 EST.
Yes, Infiniti has indeed made a habit of teasing the masses with exotic and eco-friendly concepts at some of the world's largest auto shows over the past few years, notably with the Emerg-E and Essence Concepts. But, unlike those rolling showcases, the automaker claims its latest reveal, known rather cryptically as the LE Concept, will hit dealerships within the next two years in nearly unchanged form.

According to Infiniti, the LE Concept boasts a 24kWh lithium-ion battery made up of 192 cells, positioned under the passenger compartment floor. For those keeping track, this sounds like the same battery used in the Nissan Leaf. The 100kw electric motor, however, is upsized for this application. The LE's 134 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque represent increases of 24 horses and 30 lb-ft over its less powerful sibling.

Infiniti is quick to point out that the LE Concept is not a small car. At 186.4 inches, its length is roughly the same as Infiniti's G sedan. Atop the EV platform sits a highly streamlined body, which pays dividends with a .25 coefficient of drag that ought to help the LE reach its estimated 100-mile range (the latter being the same as the Leaf).

Inside, Infiniti uses words and phrases like double-wave and "Hamon" (ripple) design to describe the LE's purposeful cabin. Ahead of the driver sits both analog and digital readouts showing speed, distance remaining and even the location of available EV chargers in the vicinity, all powered by an Intel Atom processor.

There's plenty of technology packed into the LE Concept, including what the automaker calls Infiniti Connection, which includes Infiniti's Personal Assistant 24-hour concierge service, navigation, and POI search. Also on the menu is a wireless charging system in addition to the standard DC 50 kW quick charger.

Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore says the company expects the LE to "be the first home-based wireless charging system if adapted for the production version." Yes, we noticed the 'if,' too. Guess we'll have to wait and see about that bit. In any case, feel free to read all about the LE Concept in the press release below and to check out our high-res image galleries.
Continue reading Infiniti LE Concept will spawn production electric sedan within two years

Infiniti LE Concept will spawn production electric sedan within two years originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 11:35:00 EST.
We'll be able to share full details on the electric LE Concept from Infiniti when the embargo lifts later today, but our ace photographer Drew Phillips happened to be on the automaker's New York Auto Show stand when officials uncovered the shiny showcar while conducting a practice run-through of their presentation.

The four-door LE concept is broadly believed to presage an upscale pure electric production model based on Nissan Leaf mechanicals for the Infiniti marque. Our man on the scene indicates that the LE is a fairly striking bit of work, with a front end that fits in well with the brand (though the chrome-edged pinched grille is a bit much). The hood line incorporates bulges along its edges, presumably for aerodynamic purposes like those on Leaf. Phillips also remarked that the rear three-quarter view looks a bit like the Hyundai Elantra, a similarity we can see but don't imagine Infiniti designers will necessarily appreciate.

We can't talk specs yet, but for pointers, the Leaf's electric powertrain generates 107 horsepower and 208 pound-feet of torque and it features a 100-mile range. Stick with us and we'll have the full skinny around noon.
Premium Leaf: Infiniti LE concept presents itself early originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 09:44:00 EST.
Infiniti has been tight-lipped about the all-electric sedan it will unveil at the New York Auto Show this year, but The Detroit Bureau learned some new tidbits recently, including that Infiniti is designing the car to "be a luxury vehicle first and an electric vehicle second," as marketing manager Sam Chung told the Bureau.

The still-unnamed, five-seat EV shares some powertrain and platform parts with the Nissan Leaf, as we heard before, but will be "more aggressive." The Bureau says that means it will blend style points from Intiniti's G-Series, the JX CUV and possibly also the Emerg-E plug-in hybrid concept we saw in Geneva. Sharing platform parts with the Leaf means that the improved heater - and increased range in cold weather - will make the jump to the luxury model. Fittingly, Infiniti product planning manager Sean McNamara told The Detroit Bureau that the Infiniti EV's li-ion battery pack will be bigger than then Leaf's 24 kWh. The extra energy is intended to improve performance, not range.

From what we've heard before, despite being a concept, the new Infiniti EV is due in production form at some point in 2014 (no longer 2013). We will know better if this EV reaches Infiniti's promise of "inspired performance" soon from New York. Stay tuned.
Infiniti releases more details on 'aggressive' all-electric concept coming to New York originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 11:58:00 EST.
Infiniti continues to openly toy with the idea of producing a racy luxury sports coupe, following on the heels of 2009's Geneva Motor Show star, the Essence concept. This year, Infiniti has gone in a more overtly sporting direction with this hot little number, the Emerg-E.

Fortunately, this coupe's styling isn't as contrived as its name suggests thanks to a rakish form that comes across as more of a supercar than the Essence's large-scale grand touring aesthetic. The Emerg-E looks even better in person than in photos, with an organic quality to the flowing lines that's nicely emphasized by the car's smoky matte finish. If we have any complaints, it's that the nose looks a bit long, and incongruously, it seems to offer a riff on the spindle grille that Lexus is rolling out portfolio-wide. No matter, this is clearly one of this year's most impressive debuts.

Powered by a 400-horsepower range-extended powertrain, Infiniti says the Emerg-E can bolt to 60 miles per hour in four seconds dead while offering a 300-mile range.

We're officially ready for Infiniti to stop teasing us with handsome concept cars and get on with producing an upscale sports coupe.
Continue reading Infiniti Emerg-E sizzles in Switzerland

Infiniti Emerg-E sizzles in Switzerland originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 07:50:00 EST.
Been wondering what the Infiniti Emerg-E is gonna look like when it takes center stage in Geneva next month? Wonder no more, as the first official photos of the mid-engined, range-extended electric supercar have hit the web.

The pics show a pretty and curvaceous design that holds its own against the likes of the Ferrari 458 and McLaren MP4-12C; more organic-looking than the sharper lines of cars like the Lexus LFA, Audi R8, and Lamborghini Gallardo.

Will the concept car's green drivetrain deliver performance on par with that kind of competition? We're eager to learn what kinds of numbers Infiniti comes forward with. Regardless, this thing's already a winner on looks alone. We can't wait to see it in person.
Infiniti Emerg-E electric supercar looks sex-E in official pics originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 08:01:00 EST.
Nissan clearly wants to get as much mileage as it can out of the "duel" it staged between its Infiniti M Hybrid and the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. You'll remember the spot, showing the M35h ripping through the quarter-mile in less than 14 seconds, ahead of the hybrid Porsche. Infiniti got Guinness World Records to proclaim it the fastest accelerating full hybrid last year, which served as the inspiration for filming the online ad.

Now, a new video has been posted to YouTube, showing some behind the scenes footage of the filming of the ad. It's not exactly earth-shattering stuff, as the parts we found most interesting were the shots of the camera chase car, which is neither an Infiniti nor a Porsche, but actually a Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

While we like the spot, this second go-round with it had us contemplating other things. We always wonder about the effectiveness of comparing your brand to another when it's clearly done to try and rub some of that competitive luster onto your own badge. And backing it up by throwing out a name that we most closely associate with overweight twins riding motorcycles? We like the M Hybrid, and we're happy to get more of a look at it, but if Infiniti really wants to impress, we'd like to see some more competitive comparisons, like how it performs on a road course or even how it matches up with non-hybrid models.

Infiniti has named its plug-in hybrid electric concept car headed for the Geneva Motor Show in March the EMERG-E. The company says the vehicle will be a sports car with a range-extending 1.2-liter gasoline internal combustion engine. The powerplant will be mounted mid-ship for superior weight distribution, and the Japanese automaker promises the concept will offer impressive performance. It may or may not also run on rainbows.

Infiniti has released very few details beyond saying pure-electric range will be "respectable." The vehicle also promises zero-emission driving in most urban settings, so there's a good chance the concept will show off some advanced charging tech as well. The automaker is intent on making us wait until the vehicle's full unveil in Geneva before it drops any more clues, though a few more teaser images have surfaced to whet our appetite. Check them out in the gallery below.
Infiniti EMERG-E announced as name for Geneva-bound electric concept originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 02 Feb 2012 14:09:00 EST.
