In case there was ever any doubt, the Emerg-E extended-range plug-in supercar from Infiniti won't really, uh, emerge.

The new head of the Nissan luxury badge says the Emerg-E won't be built as a production vehicle, UK publication Autocar reports, citing Infiniti chief Johan de Nysschen's presentation at the recent Paris Motor Show. Instead, aspects of the concept car will be used in the powertrain and design of other models. De Nysschen specifically said the Emerg-E would offer "strong cues" in the G-series. The wireless-charging-capable Infiniti LE is still due for a launch in 2014.

Infiniti released pictures of the Emerg-E in February and a month later showed off the concept car at the Geneva Motor Show. The automaker said the Emerg-E had a 300-mile range from battery and gas tank and could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in four seconds.
Infiniti Emerg-E not going into production originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 13:54:00 EST.

The first Volkswagen concept from the 2012 Paris Motor Show is the new Golf BlueMotion, which has enough <strike>green</strike> blue street cred to be called "the most fuel-efficient Golf ever." How efficient does this seventh-generation Golf need to be to reach this grandiose claim? It burns 3.2 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers. That's the equivalent of 73.5 U.S. miles per gallon (on the European cycle). VW says the car has 15-percent improved fuel economy compared to the previous model. We say it's yummy.

The Golf BlueMotion uses VW's new 1.6-litre TDI turbodiesel engine that offers 108 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque - enough so that it can skedaddle on up to 125 miles per hour. It's lighter than older Golfs, has stop-start with battery regen, still seats five and will be available in Europe in the summer of 2013.

The new Golf BlueMotion is also slipperier, with a drag coefficient of just 0.27 thanks to a lower chassis, underbody panels, partially closed off air inlets and other aero upgrades. While the car seen here is technically still a concept, the production car will be made available in two trim lines, Trendline and Comfortline. Trendline is the base version and comes with either two or four doors, a dust and pollen filter and a five-inch touchscreen. The Comfortline model gets "a more exclusive instrument cluster," 16-inch alloy wheels and ParkPilot proximity sensors front and rear.

VW has even come up with this quirky little tidbit: The Gold BlueMotion has a 50-liter (13.2-gallon) tank - enough for a theoretical range of 1,562 km. If the average driver goes 15,000 kilometers (9,300 miles) a year, they "will only have to refuel this Volkswagen ten times per year." Those numbers are a little low for this side of the Atlantic, but it's unlikely we'll get the Golf BlueMotion here, anyway.

More details are available in the official release below.
Continue reading VW Golf BlueMotion concept is a diesel looker worth 73.5 mpg

VW Golf BlueMotion concept is a diesel looker worth 73.5 mpg originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 18:58:00 EST.
For those keeping score, this one counts in the win column for BMW's electric-drive vehicles.

The German automaker has revealed details about a concept plug-in hybrid it will debut at the Paris Motor Show next week. The Active Tourer will be what BMW calls a "premium compact" PHEV with a drivetrain similar to the i8 model planned for 2015.

The Active Tourer will check in at about 171 inches long, or about a foot shorter than the current 3-series models. More importantly, the car features a drivetrain that pairs a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine that drives front wheels with an electric motor that moves the rear. Combined, the car will have 190 horsepower, a 0-60 mile per hour acceleration time of about eight seconds and a top speed of about 125 miles per hour. As for fuel economy, BMW says the car will get about 94 miles per gallon on the European driving cycle, which returns higher numbers than the EPA test in the U.S.

When the plug-in hybrid will be available to the public is anyone's guess. In June, Automotive News Europe reported that the i8 would debut sometime in 2014 and would cost about $125,000. That said, reports also came out that month that the automaker may shelve plans for its line of i-branded electric-drive vehicles because of high development costs and perceived lack of demand. BMW had previously said the i3 all-electric would debut next year. More details in BMW's press release below.
Continue reading BMW Active Tourer plug-in hybrid concept coming to Paris

BMW Active Tourer plug-in hybrid concept coming to Paris originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 09:12:00 EST.
The types of pure electric vehicles available on the market are quite limited. For now, we've got compact and midsize cars and high performance sports cars. More are coming, but that's it today unless you want to get a conversion. What if you were looking for an official, electric SUV or a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) to transport your family, groceries, and camping gear?

Nissan is getting ready to fill that niche and will be unveiling an all-electric compact SUV concept at this year's Paris Motor Show in late September. Details are limited, but we hear that this unnamed EV, possibly an X-Trail replacement, could be an evolution of the Hi-Cross hybrid concept that was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show this year (pictured). As for power, it might use the powerful 80-kilowatt motor found in the Nissan Leaf. Beyond that, who knows.

There will be competition in this new EV segment. Toyota recently unveiled the 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV, a CUV destined for limited production later this year. Tesla will also bring out a crossover compact luxury CUV, the Model X, in late 2013. Mitsubishi plans to roll out its second electrified vehicle in the near future - a plug-in hybrid SUV. Looks like any complaints about the lack of electric SUVs/CUVs on dealer lots will only hold water for a short while.
Nissan's Paris-bound EV concept could fill out CUV niche originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 07 Aug 2012 14:13:00 EST.
We've done a triple-take with the Opel/Vauxhall Adam, and after two rounds of grainy spy shots, this third official look brings the car into crisp, clear focus. From the looks of these photos, we like it a bit more than we thought we did initially. Yes, it's got plenty of Audi A1 going on in that greenhouse. Yes, there's a lot going on with sculpting outside and inside. Yes, customers might want to be very careful about how they choose their colors among the more than one million color and trim options - yes, your read that correctly: more than one million. But we'll say again, we like it (though in fairness the front end is likely to divide opinions).

The Adam is a challenger to other premium subcompact hatches like the Mini Cooper and the Fiat 500, and size-wise it's slightly shorter and wider than the Mini and has a slightly shorter wheelbase. To counter the fact that it has taken so long for General Motors to make it happen, the UK price of around £11,000 ($17k USD including Value Added Tax) won't skimp on features: stop/start, ESP, Hill Start Assist, airbags all around and a city steering mode with additional power assistance.

To counter the increasing obsolescence of traditional infotainment and nav systems, the Adam's optional unit will feature a seven-inch screen that plugs into the owner's smartphone and replicates the interface. The owner then has control of his phone via the touchscreen. This mirroring process is becoming more common, but we'll wait for more adoption to see how well it works in places where there's no cell signal and no backup maps on an in-car hard drive.

The four-cylinder gasoline engines available at launch will be taken from the Corsa lineup and paired with a five-speed manual: a 1.2-liter with 69 horsepower and two 1.4-liters, one with 86 hp and one with 99 hp. It will be a year before we see the three-cylinder engines co-developed with SAIC.

And yes, Jam, Glam and Slam will be the trim names. We aren't sure which ones are pictured, but since the trim doesn't appear to be written anywhere on the car, no one has to know. We'll get a better look at it in a few months at the Paris Motor Show, and then on European streets beginning next January. Right now, though, we'd advise you scroll down to watch a couple of Adam videos and check out the official press release.
Continue reading Opel/Vauxhall Adam zooms into Europe's supermini fray [w/video]

Opel/Vauxhall Adam zooms into Europe's supermini fray [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 07:58:00 EST.
We've been waiting since the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show - when Mitsubishi first talked about the PX-MiEV, a plug-in CUV concept - for some sort of real-world plug-in Outlander. It looks like we're finally going to get our wish during the 2012 Paris Motor Show this fall. Today, Mitsubishi released the not-very-revealing teaser image you see above, and it says the plug-in Outlander will "share its architecture with the soon-to-be-introduced New Outlander's ICE versions." Mitsubishi also claims the Outlander will "be the first permanent 4WD electric car in series production."

The New Outlander PHEV will have three drive modes, all of which are 4WD: Pure (all-electric drive), Series (electric drive, supported by the gas generator) and Parallel (ICE engine supported by Twin Motor 4WD). Mitsubishi says the New Outlander PHEV will have a total driving range of 800 km (497 miles) and emit fewer than 50 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

As previously noted, the PHEV version of the Outlander should arrive in the spring of 2013. Given the coming pack of plug-in crossovers (see: Tesla Model X, Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid, Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and Amp's offerings), if Mitsubishi can get the cost comparatively low, the way the i is compared to the Nissan Leaf, without making it quite as spartan, this thing could carve out a niche for itself. For the moment, though, it sounds like Mitsubishi is only going to sell the new Outlander PHEV in Europe.

*UPDATE: As DaveMart points out in the comments, Mitsubishi reps have told Inside Line that the plug-in Outlander will come to the U.S. in late 2013 or early 2014.
Continue reading Mitsubishi promises Outlander plug-in hybrid for Paris *UPDATE

Mitsubishi promises Outlander plug-in hybrid for Paris *UPDATE originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 15:50:00 EST.
General Motors of Europe president Nick Reilly says Opel fully expects to turn a profit on its upcoming minicar. According to Reilly, the city car's up-scale features mean that the automaker will be able to charge a premium price for the vehicle and, in turn, should let Opel profit from the supermini.

Recently, Reilly told Automotive News that the urban runabout, codenamed Junior, will be aimed at "people who care about the status of their car, what it can do, what features it has, what telematics it has" and rather openly admits the Junior will be more expensive than Opel's other offering in the minicar segment, the Agila. Reilly says of the Junior, "It will have a more premium price for its segment," but claims that Opel, despite reports to the contrary, is not looking to have this vehicle compete with the Mini Cooper.

The Junior is expected to be unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Production is tentatively slated for 2013.

GM Europe boss says upscale Opel minicar will turn a profit originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 08:55:00 EST.
Renault Zoe concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Scheduled for a market launch in 2012, the battery-powered Renault Zoe is one vehicle that flew under the radar at the Paris Motor Show and somehow managed to duck out of view as our cameras made their rounds. Though we didn't catch it live, Renault claims that the images it released are a 90 percent accurate representation of the production model. Good thing, since we're impressed with what we see.

The striking four-door concept comes in at 161 inches long, 70.4 inches wide and 60.6 inches high. Its compact dimensions, hatchback body style and rumored price in the neighborhood of £13,000 ($20,690 U.S. at the current exchange rate) should send the Zoe flying off dealer lots upon arrival. But, if those attributes don't generate sales, then Renault is quite confident that its performance will.

Powered by a 80-horsepower (60 kW) electric motor that cranks out 164 pound-feet of torque, the Zoe scoots to 60 miles per hour in eight seconds, tops out at 84 mph and runs up to 99 miles on a single charge. The Zoe's quick-charge capabilities means that a mere ten minutes of plugged-in time results in 37 miles of additional range. If you're still not convinced that the Zoe is a breakthrough electric vehicle, well, maybe its three-minute battery swap capabilities or perhaps its skin hydration, on-board air quality sensors or relaxing scent diffusers will convince you otherwise. Hit the jump to discover the Renault Zoe. Hat tip to David!

If the future of Formula racing is electric, it could look a lot like the Formulec EF01 that's just been revealed at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Constructed in a two-and-a-half-year period with a number of quality partners pursuing pollution-free Formula 3 performance, the single seater could be the starting point for a new electric series with over a dozen events on five continents. Soon, too. Green flags could be dropping as early as 2012.

With Segula Matra Technologies providing the technical coordination for the effort, the drivetrain was developed by the same people behind the Exagon Furtive eGT and Andros ice-racers. It makes use of a pair of Siemens motors mated to a two-speed gearbox that help it accelerate to 100 km/h (62 miles per hour) in three seconds and head northward of 250 kilometers per hour (155 miles per hour). The energy to race for 20 to 25 minutes is stored in lithium ion batteries from Saft and are hidden beneath beautiful bodywork developed with help from the likes of the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula One team.

The Formulec organization has a serious plan in place to get an electric Formula racing series established that could see the entrance of other constructors in 2013, once a set of technical specs are decided upon. In the near term, look out for appearances at tracks around the world as they make their case for electric performance. Hit the jump for a sample of EF01 making the rounds at Magny Cours in a spiffy video put together by the folks at Formulec as well as their official press release.

Appearing on the stand alongside the awesome Venturi America at the 2010 Paris Motor Show was an updated Fétish. While it retains a lot of similarities to the original, it has a fresh fascia, a new rear spoiler and a more-refined interior. Under the skin there now resides a liquid-cooled 220 kW (295 horsepower) rear-mounted motor that said to propel the carbon-fiber machine from 0-60 in four seconds and provide a top speed of 200 km/h - a clip it can attain in 12.8 seconds. That's despite a battery system that's has grown to 450 kilograms (992 lbs). The new 54 kWh pack is said to give Venturi's oldest electric model a "90 km/h stabilized" (56 miles per hour) range of 340 kilometers (211 miles).

Production of the 2011 model is supposed to be greatly increased over the original iteration, with 10 a year planned for production at the company's new manufacturing facility at Sablé-sur-Sarthe. Only about 10 units of the first Fétish were sold since its launch in 2004 and with a new new price tag of €300,000 ($410,600 U.S. at today's exchange rates) the new Fetish should remain a pretty rare bird despite increased industrial capacity. Hit the jump for a bonus video form Venturi promoting its latest automotive efforts.

Venturi America EV Dune Buggy - Click above for high-res image gallery

Venturi was last seen in America a couple of months ago, blasting across the white crystals at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the guise of the Buckeye Bullet. At the Paris Motor Show, the Monegasque company revealed a different kind of terrain-blasting machine called the America EV Dune Buggy - a jacked-up, 300-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive electric sports car as open and free as the great land it's named after.

The interior would be admirably minimal if things hadn't got cluttered up around the console screen, but the center tunnel buttons are a chunky, metallic pleasure to behold. The single display in front of the driver will hopefully present information clearly enough to keep your eyes on the road and your hair in the wind. And we aren't sure what kind of stereo is involved, but based on the speakers it looks pretty serious.

As for actually getting behind the wheel and exploring the roadster's namesake country, a retail source for Venturis has just landed in Columbus, Ohio, which means we might one day see something from the automaker outside of a blog post. But that's the future, folks - for now, there's a press release in its familiar place and a gallery of high-res photos below.

2011 Honda CR-Z with optional accessories - Click above for high-res image gallery

Honda's big introduction at this year's Paris Motor Show may have been the 2011 Jazz Hybrid, but that doesn't mean the Japanese automaker didn't bring some other automotive fodder for us to look at. Here, for example, is the new CR-Z hybrid hatch wearing some of Honda's optional visual accessories.

Honda is really trying to emphasize that the CR-Z is a sport hybrid. By adding things like larger wheels, a mesh grille, unique blue-tinged headlights, carbon fiber trim and a rear spoiler, the little hybrid's visual sportiness has indeed been improved without falling prey to the over-modded tuner look. This CR-Z may certainly look the part of a new-age hot hatch, but even the fanciest of body jewelry won't help the not-entirely-sporty and not-so-efficient hybrid powertrain under the hood.
Click your way through our gallery of live images below to see and judge the added visual modifications for yourself.

It takes a keen eye to notice that the first factory-built Fisker Karma differs in any way from the concept version. Still, anyone who gazes long enough may spot the differentiates. Staying true to its concept form, the factory-built Karma plug-in hybrid that hit the stage at the Paris Motor Show retains the concept's massive 22-inch wheels, sensuous styling, 403-plus horsepower rating and the company's promise of achieving 100-plus miles per gallon in regular use. So, what's exactly different about the factory-built version? Well, the most notable exterior modification is the addition of a B pillar, which was apparently required to increase the vehicle's structural rigidity.

Aside from the added pillar, we can't really pick out any differences between the gorgeous concept that we laid eyes on many years ago and this production-ready version. Fisker still lists a base price of $88,000 and anticipates that deliveries will begin early next year, or so it says. We hope to get up close and personal with the Karma at the upcoming LA Auto Show, but for now, hit up that high-res gallery of live shots that just came in from Paris and hop the jump for more info from Fisker.

Ever since Honda debuted the Fit hatchback, we've said that it would be a perfect vehicle to have a gasoline-electric hybrid variant. Honda didn't exactly hear us loud and clear, however. First, we got the Insight, which isn't all that great, and then came the CR-Z, which is a peculiar blend of sport and efficiency.

Other markets, however, will now get a hybrid version of the Honda Jazz, the Euro-spec Fit. It uses the same Integrated Motor Assist mild hybrid system as the Insight and CR-Z matched with a 1.3-liter gasoline engine. After making its world debut at the Paris Motor Show this week, the hybrid Jazz will go on sale in Europe in the early part of 2011.

Click through our high-res galleries of both live and stock shots of the Jazz Hybrid, and click past the jump to watch two videos of the green (literally) machine out on the road.

2011 Ford C-Max - Click above for high-res image gallery

We've long been jealous of the frugal diesel vehicles that American (and other) automakers make available in the European market but not in the U.S., but Ford has the ability to send our envy-o-meters into the red by hyping something that sports a big battery pack. The Blue Oval has done it again this with the confirmation at the Paris Motor Show that the company's first European hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, new versions of the C-Max, are on track for launch in 2013.

We've known about the C-Max hybrid and PHEV for a while, but now we know that the plug-in will use Ford's powersplit architecture that pairs a high-efficiency Atkinson-cycle engine with a "high-voltage electric motor generator" and a lithium-ion battery system. The new C-Max models will be built in Spain. Sure, the U.S. is getting the Grand C-Max seven-seater in about a year, but the five-seater will remain unavailable here. Maybe, just maybe, by the time 2013 rolls around and we have a slew of decent, efficient vehicles to play with here in the U.S., we won't care about what's available in Europe. Oh, who are we kidding? Of course we will.

Believe it or not, Renault says the car you see above, known - seriously, we're not making this stuff up - as the Twizy, is a production vehicle. We hesitate to call it a car, or a motorcycle, or a scooter... it's really sort of a four-wheeled covered scooter, and it's powered by an electric drivetrain.

There will apparently be two different versions of the Twizy available, one sporting nine horsepower that can hit a top speed of 28 miles per hour and one with 20 horses that can hit 47 mph. A three-and-a-half-hour charge will result in 60 miles of range from the onboard lithium ion battery pack.

Renault is currently taking pre-orders on the Twizy, along with two other electric vehicles, and it will have the vehicle on the market in Europe by the end of 2011. Pricing is expected to be similar to the Piaggio MP3, and the rental charges for the battery pack will be covered in the Twizy's payment. Check it out in our high-res image gallery of live shots below.

Renault Dezir concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Don't let anyone tell you that Renault can't do a concept car. The French manufacturer pulled the sheets back on its all-electric Dezir at this year's Paris Motor Show, and the concept is as sexy as it is absurd. Designers took a stab in an all-new direction with a pair of reverse-hinged butterfly doors that are the epitome of awesome. Likewise, the ultra-wide stance and aluminum sideblades are our kind of flashy. As you might expect, this concept makes use of a fittingly-futuristic powertrain. Renault says that under all of that curvy sheet metal there's a full EV drivetrain on hand.

Surprisingly enough, there isn't supercar-rivaling power on hand, though. The company puts the Dezir final horsepower figure at around 150 ponies and 166 pound-feet of torque - not exactly e-tron rivaling numbers. Even so, the concept is said to be able to dart to around 60 mph in just shy of five seconds. Check it out in our high-res image galleries below.

Squaring off, in a way, against the escooter that Smart unveiled yesterday at the Paris Motor Show, is Mini's entry in the fanciful all-electric scooter category, the Scooter E. There are more differences here than just where you put the "e," most specifically, how each scooter boils the essence of their four-wheeled cousins onto a platform smaller than half the size.

You can see the escooter in detail here, then compare it to the Scooter E, which manages to put a lot of what makes a Mini look like a Mini onto just two wheels. We think the bold yellow stripe around the leg opening, up to the headlight and around the seat is a nice touch. Considering that the Mini E and the Scooter E are both battery powered, perhaps the stripe is supposed to lightly mimic the yellow on that iconic car? We like what we see, and, apparently, Mini is paying close attention to what it hears in Paris to decide if the Scooter E gets put into production. Got an opinion?

The Kia Pop Concept is a slick little wedge of silver that the company calls "a striking vision of future urban electric transport" meant "to act as a loose nucleus, a wild atom." In case you're wondering about the styling, you can't compare it to anything you might see today. Kia design chief Peter Schreyer says it, "looks even further into the future" than even the next generation of vehicles, which means we can look forward to guppy faces and oblong windows.

The face is actually referred to as "Kia's trademark 'tiger nose,'" and the sweeping, uninterrupted glass above it is a tidy feature. The three-person, "non-automotive" seating is meant to provide perfect vision for the driver and passengers, with a swoopy front bench curved to allow a third seat set at an oblique angle in the rear corner.

The future theme goes minimalist with just one button in the cabin and everything else controlled by the touch screens on the Transparent Organic LED displays. LIthium polymer gel batteries keep the juice flowing throughout, pumping atoms to a 50-kW electric motor good for a 100-mile range and a healthy top speed of 87 miles per hour. You'll find more details on it after the jump, and a look at its futuristic bits in the gallery of high-res photos below.

Peugeot HR1 Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

In addition to pulling the sheets back on its new 508, Peugeot unveiled its newest concept at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Called the HR1 Concept, the car is what we would assume would happen if a Prius knocked boots with the SEMA world. Behind the only-a-mother-could-love face, the HR1 benefits from a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine in front and a 37-horsepower electric motor positioned in the rear of the vehicle. This is a through-the-road hybrid, which means the two powertrains operate independently and are only connected, well, through the road. Both are bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission, and all told, the company says that the drivetrain is good for a combined "potential power" of 147 hp. Even better, fuel consumption is kept down to 3.5 liters per 100 kilometers, or around 67 miles per gallon U.S.

In marketing speak, the HR1 boasts an "alternative door structure" as part of its effort to combine as many vehicle body structures as possible. Peugeot says its designers baked elements from the city car, coupe and SUV philosophies into the final look of this hybrid. Surprisingly enough, there are no current plans to bring the HR1 to life.
