Michel Motorsports has chosen the SEMA 2011 convention to debut the Gitano, its first original design effort. The Filipino company has spent its first 23 years building replicas of classic sportscars, and that history has clearly influenced this rear-wheel-drive coupe. But lift the long hood and underneath you'll find a beating heart unlike anything found in its faux-Lotus Sevens - a 150 kW (200 horsepower) electric motor with sundry supporting components. If that sounds somewhat underwhelming, consider that it can pump out 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque continuously from 0 to 5,000 RPM. Good times, yes?

But wait, there's more! Open the trunk and you'll find a 25 kW (34.53 hp) range-extending rotary engine ready to take you 250 additional miles past the 100-mile all-electric range. About the size of a spare tire and able to burn a number of combustible fuels, it runs at its peak efficiency to pump energy back into the battery pack during those long distance drives.

The power plants and their associated bits come courtesy of EVDrive. This outing represents their first foray into the commercial market as well, after spending the past few years developing their secret sauciness. AutoblogGreen actually covered their original electric dirt bike project back in 2008.

In addition to the system in the Gitano, the San Diego-based firm also has on display an all-electric version that's specifically engineered to be used in conversions of BWM E46 series vehicles. They say it should be available in the 2nd quarter of 2012 and be the first of a whole family of modular systems with outputs ranging from 65 to 1,000-plus hp.

As for the Gitano itself, there's no word yet on the pricetag or when it is expected to begin rolling out the door. The first examples will be constructed in Britain and die-hard petrolheads will be pleased to learn that the electric drivetrain isn't the only available option. The company says it can offer offer a variant powered by an LS-series gen IV V8 capable of 430 hp and 424 lb-ft of torque.
Continue reading Michel Motorsports Gitano debuts with EVDrive range-extended craziness

Michel Motorsports Gitano debuts with EVDrive range-extended craziness originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 11:58:00 EST.
MissionEVT components integrated into Honda HPD CRZ hybrids - Click above for high-res image gallery

We mentioned last week that Honda had a bevy of hot CR-Z hybrids at their stand during the SEMA show, including a pair from the Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD) division. In a separate post, we also told you Mission Motors was launching a high performance components division called MissionEVT. Turns out, these two items were intimately related. An eagle-eyed reader tipped us off that one of the things that made this pair of these performance-oriented Honda machines so, well, performance oriented, was the presence of some carbon fiber-covered tech from a certain San Francisco-based company.

According to Honda, with the help of "...a turbocharger and upgraded IMA hybrid system," the modded drivetrain puts out an estimated combined 200 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Upgraded IMA, indeed. The stock version we drove, if you need a reminder, is good for 122 hp at 6,000 RPM and 128 lb-ft with the six-speed manual. Now, we don't know how much the MissionEVT bits contributed to this rise, or even exactly which bits were involved. We can only say we're glad to see Mission Motors bringing in some revenue from sales and getting this opportunity to prove themselves..

While there are no announced plans to sell either of the two versions with the tricked-out powertrain, we should be able to see a couple copies of the HPD CR-Z Racer in action at the upcoming 25 Hours of Thunderhill endurance race. Thanks to Jerry for the tip!

Looks like Honda isn't the only automaker trying to cash in on the idea of a "sport hybrid." Toyota has just debuted its new line of Plus performance parts at this year's SEMA show, and the first vehicle to benefit from these new accessories is the Prius hybrid.

The Prius Plus Performance Package (say that three times fast) includes a seven-piece aero kit that still allows the sleek hatch to maintain its 0.25 coefficient of drag. The new front and rear bumper spoilers, side skirts and rear diffuser are rounded off with an attractive set of 17-inch forged wheels wrapped in slick 215/45-series tires.

In an effort to keep things as economical as possible, the Prius' hybrid engine does not receive any upgrades, but the hatch's suspension has been tweaked to provide better overall handling. Sport-tuned lowering springs have been fitted and a rear sway bar has been put in place to keep things flat and stable during cornering.

Toyota will be offering the Plus Performance Package in limited quantities beginning in April of next year. Follow the jump for the official details and see the modded-up Prius for yourself in the galleries below.

The team from Bisimoto has taken to curing the Honda CR-Z hybrid of its anemia by prescribing massive doses of forced induction. The stock 1.5-liter four-cylinder was extracted and rebuilt using Arias pistons and a Bisimoto valvetrain, but the star of the show is that massive billet Turbonetics turbo. It shoves ample amounts of air through a 70-millimeter custom throttle body at a rate that has to rival most jet engines. The whole kit and caboodle is good for a staggering 533 horsepower, which helps explain why a car that started life with a 0-60 mph time of 10 seconds now requires a parachute to reduce its inertia.

Is this proof positive that the CR-Z has the kind of tunability that made the CRX legendary, or simply an example of cash conquering all handicaps? Decide for yourself as you scroll through our high-res image gallery below.

Wraptivo showed up at SEMA with two vinyl-wrapped masterpieces: a 2011 Honda CR-Z and a 2010 Nissan GT-R. In addition to the faux carbon fiber skin, the CR-Z hybrid wears a smattering of factory Honda aero pieces and aftermarket performance hardware. To give the hatch a little more pep, the Wraptivo crew threw in a supercharger system managed by a Hondata ECU and an easy-breathing exhaust.

Meanwhile, the sinister GT-R packs a set of custom powder coated Advan wheels and spacers from the crew at Fatlace. A set of KW coilovers gives the supercar its menacing stance, and the whole package is wrapped in the same high-end skin as the pint-sized CR-Z.

Kia Forte Hybrid Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Kia Forte Hybrid is neat enough - green on the outside, green and leafy on the inside. Riding cast alloy wheels wrapped in low-rolling resistance tires, the hybrid system mixes it up with a 1.6-liter LPG engine tied to lithium polymer batteries. Saving the world is counteracted with killing your ears, though - this eco-friendly concept has a 1,200-watt Infinity 2 audio system on board.

The Kia Forte Koup Type R Concept, on the other hand, is unbridled awesome. Built to commemorate Kia's first year in the Grand Am racing series, it's a hotness-added version of the Forte Koup put together by Kinetic Motorsports. Blistered and vented panels are adorned with 18-inch BBS wheels and some diffuser action in back, plus a green-mesh and carbon accented interior kicked up a notch by a short throw shift kit. Best yet, Kia says that this has "an eye on future production vehicle applications." Yes, please! It's something like what the second-generation Scion tC should have been, and you'll find more on it in the presser after the jump and the gallery of high-res photos below.

KOR EcoLogic brought a proof-of-concept for its Urbee three-wheeler to this year's SEMA Show. The company has partnered with Stratasys for unique 3D-printed body panels that are carved from high-density plastic that are supposed to increase the vehicle's longevity. While technically a three-wheeler, KOR EcoLogic says that the Urbee will meet all automotive crash standards.

With seven lead-acid batteries, an electric motor that sends power to the front wheels, a small range-extending gasoline engine and rear-wheel steering, the Urbee boasts the definition of an unconventional drivetrain. KOR EcoLogic says that the company will have a small fleet of testers out and about soon, with full production landing sometime around 2014.

Toyota Prius C&A Custom Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Can a Prius be sporty? Toyota's latest offering here at SEMA proves to us that it can certainly try to look the part. The Prius C&A Custom Concept wears an aggressive, lightweight carbon fiber body kit and rides on 18-inch forged aluminum wheels. What's more, the C&A has been substantially lowered thanks to a TIEN setup that puts the hatch four inches lower to the ground up front and six inches lower out back. The result is a Prius that has been transformed from a do-good hybrid into what looks like the anime version of a Lamborghini Reventón.

The upgrades have continued inside the Prius', where the cabin has been covered (and we mean covered) in Alcantara suede. The headliner, A and B pillars, door trim, rear seat, console box, front Recaro seats, steering wheel and even the aluminum shift knob all wear Alcantara.

This Prius certainly echoes the SEMA theme, as odd as it may be. See for yourself in our high-res gallery below, and read Toyota's own words about the C&A Custom in the press release after the jump.

The Urbee concept vehicle has an interesting story to go with its sci-fi looks. See, the body was not built in the classic sense, but rather it was printed. Three dimensional printing has seen significant growth in certain markets, like with design and engineering firms looking for rapid prototyping. However, even very expensive 3D printers are limited to printing small objects that can fit in, at most, a few cubic feet. Stratasys, a 3D printing company, teamed up with engineering group Kor Ecologic to go well beyond these limits to print out the first ever plug-in hybrid where the entire body was generated by additive manufacturing processes.

The concept's technical details are scarce, but we can tell you it is an electric and liquid fuel hybrid that is apparently capable of returning more than 200 miles per gallon on the highway and 100 mpg city. No mention is made as to whether that follows any EPA test procedure or how much of that is simply electric propulsion - and we're all well aware that playing with numbers can yield some inflated mileage ratings. Does that 230 mpg Chevrolet Volt bring back any memories? Still, we applaud the engineers for some out-of-the-box thinking as all exterior components (including the glass panels) were created using Dimension 3D Printers. If you'd like to see this concept in all its ABS plastic glory, a full-scale Urbee prototype is apparently on display at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas and we'll post pictures from the event once we can track the vehicle down.
Lexus brought along its fleet of custom hybrids to this year's SEMA show, including a host of cars prepped by the likes of VIP Auto Salon. But of all the creations amassed under the Las Vegas sun, the belle of this particular ball had to be the F Sport CT 200h. With its tasteful modifications and satin white exterior, the hybrid hatch is as nice as a factory-backed custom can be. Of course, the winged beast built by the wrenches at 0-60 magazine holds a special place in our hearts, too.

Zero South Biodiesel Electric Hummer - Click above for high-res image gallery

Zero South, a company that popped up at SEMA in 2008, is back again with its Biodiesel Electric Hummer. The heavily modified H1 rides on tracks at all four corners - a necessary modification, since this Hummer is designed for an expedition to the South Pole.

The trip is going to be documented by Chris Paine, who's best known for the film Who Killed the Electric Car? It was reported back in 2008 that the vehicle was going to be driven by Buzz Aldrin and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. The film is called Drive Around the World and was shot in 3D. Drive Around the World is also the name of an organization that works to inspire an urge to explore while raising money for various charities. The H1 shown above is Zero South's vehicle for participating in these expeditions.

The Zero South Biodiesel Electric Hummer was originally setup to run on B99 fuel, but Jay Leno joined the team and modified the powertrain so that a four-cylinder diesel Volkswagen engine would act as a generator to four electric motors. Each motor would then provide power to the individual track it's coupled to. It's one heck of a Hummer, and we invite you to check it out for yourself in the gallery below.

Honda has a grand total of 12 different CR-Zs on display at this year's SEMA show. In addition to the Mugen and Hybrid R we showed you earlier, the Japanese automaker has created the CR-Z with Genuine Honda Accessories and HPD CR-Z Racer, and eight other companies have put their spins on the compact hybrid hatch.

Big name companies like Bisimoto Engineering, DSO Eyewear, Eibach Springs, Fortune Motorsports and Konig Wheels have created their own one-off CR-Zs, accounting for a little less than half of Honda's overall showing. Two special project CR-Zs are on hand, as well, done up by the folks from Honda Tuning Magazine and the Los Angeles Auto Show.

See the full lot of CR-Zs for yourself in the gallery below, and hit the jump for Honda's official press release.

2011 Chevrolet Volt Z-Spec - Click above for high-res image gallery

Chevrolet is out to put the power of customization in its buyers' hands. The company has announced a theoretical new customization program for every vehicle it sells, from the lowly Aveo to the mammoth Silverado 3500 HD. The Bow Tie pulled the sheets off of a Cruze, Volt and Spark, each of which wore pieces from the company's new host of custom parts.

The most interesting of the trio is the Volt. GM designers slapped on a set of lower rocker panels, a reworked rear fascia and blacked-out trim accents around the vehicle. Those stylish 19-inch wheels are actually straight from GM, as are the trick rear tail lights.

The Cruze Z-Spec Concept wears a complete body kit, unique paint and a new high-flow grille. Sport springs, a set of super-sexy 19-inch BBS wheels and a Brembo brake system also come along for the ride, as do a set of Recaro racing buckets.

The last of the bunch is something of a quandary, as GM has yet to come out and confirm whether or not the Spark is actually headed to the States. We do know that the pint-sized Chevy will show up in North America though, which may help explain why a custom version of the car is displayed here in Las Vegas. With special body treatments like that rear spoiler and eye-searing orange paint, there's no mistaking this hatch for its tamer brethren. Hit the jump for the press releases.

Honda has big plans for campaigning a turbocharged, race-bred CR-Z at the upcoming 24 Hours of Thunderhill, and while that car is all kinds of right, it's about as far from a street-legal machine as a hybrid can get. Fortunately, the company's engineers and designers have joined forces to give us all an idea what the car would look like in road-going guise with the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept.

Like its track-only brethren, the concept rocks 200 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque thanks to a little forced induction and an upgraded integrated motor assist system. Throw in a robust clutch, limited slip differential and a fully adjustable suspension and you've got the makings for a true sport hybrid. Hit the jump for the press release.

2011 Honda CR-Z Mugen - Click above for high-res image gallery

Heads up, CR-Z fans: Honda has announced that the company will be releasing a mere 300 Mugen accessory kits for the Japanese sport hybrid. The ultra-rare bodywork includes bits like a completely revised front fascia with an altered grille design, a massive rear spoiler and flashy 17-inch rollers. Under the hood things stay nearly completely stock, though Honda has swapped the blasé plastic oil filler cap with a billet aluminum piece. Astounding, we know.

But all of that pales in comparison to the interior work. Along with a new shift knob, Honda has installed "sport mats." We aren't entirely sure what makes a floor mat sporty, but we'll take their word for it.

The body kits will be available in all five CR-Z colors. So far, there's no word on how much the kits will cost, but we can't imagine they'll go cheap. Hit the jump for the full press blast.

MissionEVT high-performance electric and hybrid powertrain components - Click above for high-res image gallery

At Mission Motors, it's not just about motorcycles anymore. With the unveiling of a sweet looking lineup of electric and hybrid componentry today at SEMA, the company launches a new high performance powertrain division: MissionEVT. Based on the knowledge and product development acquired from the Mission One program, this new effort will collaborate with manufacturers to develop and build all-electric and hybrid propulsion systems for vehicles of varying size and purpose. In fact, it already is.

In a brief conversation with CEO Jit Bhattacharya, it was revealed that the company has been toiling away at this for a while and is already in cahoots with a couple major OEMs (original equipment manufacturers). While he wasn't at liberty to say which manufacturers specifically, it did seem as if these endeavors could involve test fleets numbering in the hundreds, at least initially.

So, if you're an automaker that forsees the need to diversify your line-up with electron-powered products, what can MissionEVT offer you? Well, it can develop high performance motor, controller and energy storage systems that, because of their modularity, can be implemented into a range of vehicle types. Perhaps most importantly, they have the software to tie it all together and make it function properly. They also claim to have lithium-based battery systems that are as energy and power dense as anything currently available.

Go ahead and check out all their shiny stuff in the gallery below. If you seek reassurance as to the quality of MissionEVT's work, hit the jump for a recent video of venerable motorcycle journalist Alan Cathcart spending some quality time with Mission' Motors' original raison d'être, the Mission One PLE. Yes, he thought it was awesome.

Electric Cars of Springfield (ECOS), taking full advantage of an invitation from duPont Registry, brought their recently constructed all-electric supercar to SEMA 2009. The bright orange Harbinger[TM] (photo above), with its Lamborghini-looks drew lots of attention with the likes of Diggity Dave stopping by for an extended chat. Its open scissor-door seemed to lure passing show professionals who used the two-seater as an impromptu posing podium (photo right).

Besides being a head-turner, the car also acted as a platform for a product from another Missouri company. EVInstruments had their customizable MiMod[TM]EV monitoring system with its touchscreen installed in the craft ready to provide potential drivers with GPS, stereo and wireless internet as well as real-time info on things like battery condition and power consumption.

Built on a German‐engineered aluminum frame and suspension system of undetermined origin, the Harbinger uses an 11" Netgain DC motor to get its bad self up to 60 mph in about 5 seconds before heading off to the electronically-imposed limit of 117 mph. Lurking beneath the composite body lies 30 kWh of lithium ion batteries said to be worth up to 150 miles of range. The social media-friendly (Facebook/Twitter) company hopes its beast will bewitch buyers into parting with $89,995 and is now accepting reservations for a limited production scheduled to start in February. ECOS got its start last year doing radical frame-off VW Beetle restoration conversions and sells electric-car components for the do-it-yourselfer. While all that might sound like enough to keep the young company busy, their website also has mention of another vehicle they hope to build next year. The ECOS Fun is a little Jeep-inspired affair that promises highway speeds and hundred-mile range for $24,995. Hit the jump for video of a little Harbinger-in-Vegas action.

If the eVaro from Future Vehicles Technologies pictured above looks familiar, then perhaps you've been following the development of the Alé. A reddish orange Alé, developed by FVT when it still stood for FuelVapor Technologies, was on display at SEMA in 2006. The more things change...

Making its "debut" at SEMA this year, the eVaro was decked out as a golden squid. Then, as now, the car is one of the contenders for the Progressive Automotive X Prize on display at SEMA this year. Over the years, FVT has increased the car's estimated MPG rating from 92 mpg using a pure gasoline engine to 275 mpg (at certain speeds) by shifting the focus from performance to efficiency. FVT added a plug-in hybrid powertrain to the car, which can now go up to 90 miles on battery power alone. The eVaro is still plenty fast, with a 0-60 time under 5 seconds. Even with all of these great numbers, we're still not sure there is a market for 10,000 of these a year, something the Automotive X-Prize is looking for. Nonetheless, we've got to hand it to FVT for their stick-to-itiveness and name-changing ability. Why did they choose eVARO? Because it means "electric vehicle with advanced regenerative braking onboard," of course.

Branew Lexus RX450h - click above image to view hi-res gallery

Let me be blunt: I don't like luxury crossovers. At all. It's a niche with no appeal to me whatsoever. Not a car, not a truck - just a fat sedan jacked up on stilts to woo trophy wives with fancy badges and reassure soccer mammas that their children are "safe." And the Lexus RX gets the sharp point of my spear of anger because it's basically responsible for the high-end CUV craze. Not a fan of hybrids, either. That said, I'm absolutely smitten with Branew's Lexus RX450h.

I think it's the stance, has to be. But there is just something very desirable - from an aesthetic standpoint. The big 24-inch wheels help tremendously, perching Branew's at just the right height. And the lower fascia helps the quite handsome - if not distinctive - OEM grill pop. And I know it's going to be a controversial opinion, but the koi fish on the hood totally work. In fact, I know a certain Subaru WRX that could use a koi or two. Anyhow, while I'd rather gargle nails than rock a luxo-CUV, if forced at gunpoint, Branew's RX450h would be my first (and only) choice.
