What would happen if you drove to National Plug In Day in your EV, stopped at a Walgreens afterwards to charge, then found out you couldn't unplug the J1772 coupler? Not a good way to end the day.

According to one Think City owner, who posts by the user name "brkannd" on a Yahoo Group for fellow EV owners (called "think_ev"), he drove 65 miles to Philadelphia for the second annual Plug In Day and used the SemaCharge network to find this particular charging station. After being unable to disconnect, he asked for help in the store, but of course they knew nothing about the charger. He was given an 800-telephone number for SemaCharge, where he left a message with their answering service, and was told he wouldn't be called back until the next day. The SemaCharge website, on the other hand, proudly reads "Call us! We're here, 24/7/365!" We've asked SemaCharge for a comment<strike>, but have not received a response.</strike> See below.

He ended up calling his contact at EuroStar, where he'd originally purchased his Think, who handed his phone to a colleague named Lanny. Lanny had had experience with this type of problem before and his solution was to "man-handle it," putting extreme upward vertical pressure on the nozzle, breaking it free. Brkannd then jimmied with his charge coupler until the car was released. He did receive a callback from SemaCharge four hours later, and they said a technician would be sent out to look at it, adding that they are looking at making some changes to their nozzle in order to improve them.

Lanny posted some photos on the Yahoo group showing the problem - that the latch didn't open as far as the connector on the adjacent station when compared side by side. He also wondered if there's a problem with inconsistency, such as the threshold on the J1772 receptacle in the Think being higher than other EVs, creating a bent connector latch. Reader Jim M., who sent in this tip, let us know that other Think City and BMW ActiveE owners have had problems in the Washington/Baltimore area disconnecting chargers as well.

Chelsea Sexton, best known for her role in "Who Killed the Electric Car?", recently wrote a column for Wired expressing concerns over inconsistencies in charging station technologies. She said she thinks Tesla Motors' new Supercharger is admirable to an extent, but doesn't appreciate the proprietary functionality for Model S owners only. Sexton wants to see automakers come out of hiding and commit to building and marketing all kinds of EVs. Then, she says, the infrastructure will follow. When it does, we need it to be reliable, and stories like this one show that just having the chargers isn't enough. They need to work as advertised, too.

*UPDATE: Naly Yang, marketing communications manager for SemaConnect, told AutoblogGreen that the problem is with the J1772 connector that SemaCharge bought from a supplier she did not want to name. "We are currently working with the supplier to find out what the issue is," she said, adding that, "We have over 500 stations nationwide, and less than one percent have this issue." If the problem can't be solved, SemeCharge might change manufacturers. She said that she personally has seen other vehicles charge at the station in question without problem, and wonders if the issue might be with the Think City. Other EV charging companies use the same supplier, but widespread reports of this problem do not exist.
What happens when you can't unplug your plug-in?
"So about those free cars you donated to us..."

The city government of Evansville, IN, which was given five all-electric City cars by now-bankrupt electric-vehicle maker Think USA, says that only one is functional because the other four vehicles' computer memories were erased because of improper recharging, the city's NBC affiliate reported on its website.

Evansville, which received the cars seven months ago, is using only one car - for parking meter service - and the other four are idle. City officials said they weren't informed that the car's batteries were not supposed to be recharged from a 120-volt outlet and required a 240-volt source, according to WFIE Channel 14. This is the first we've heard of this sort of damage from a standard outlet, and goes against the 110V-plug on the included charging cord (see picture here).

Evansville representatives are hoping to get the four disabled cars reprogrammed so that they can be used for water, sewer and building commission services.

Norway-based Think, which went bankrupt last June even after receiving a $118.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, made its U.S. battery-electric vehicles in Elkhart, IN, about 350 miles north of Evansville on the other side of the state. Lithium-ion battery maker Ener1, an investor in Think, subsequently went bankrupt in late January, and has since announced plans to emerge from bankruptcy.
Donated Think EVs idled because of improper recharging? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 08 Apr 2012 16:32:00 EST.
Remember when the U.S. capital of RV production, Elkhart, IN was going to escape the doldrums that the decline of the motor home industry brought on by shifting over to building electric cars? Not so fast. As NPR reports, rising demand for RVs has helped boost employment in Elkhart, IN, while the number of workers at the factory building Think electric vehicles has dwindled to just two.

The town has benefited from RV sales that jumped more than 60 percent between 2009 and 2011 to about 250,000 units. Such increased demand has helped offset the effect of the failure of Think, whose parent company went bankrupt. Think at one time estimated that it would employ more than 400 people in Elkhart, which is about 150 miles north of Indianapolis and had an unemployment rate of about 20 percent when Think first announced its plans to make EVs there. When we visited in late 2010, things were looking so positive.

Think only reached a peak of 25 workers and is now down to two. There are about 120 Think EVs sitting at the Elkhart factory, with another 32 in various stages of completion, according to NPR.

Norway-based Think went bankrupt last June despite the fact that it had received a $118.5 million grant from the federal government. That bankruptcy helped drive investor and lithium-ion battery maker Ener1 into bankruptcy in late January. That company said in late February that it would emerge from bankruptcy this month.
America's RV capitol rebounds but number of Think EV workers drops to just two originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 19:44:00 EST.
Lithium-ion battery maker Ener1, which filed for bankruptcy in late January, plans to emerge from its Chapter 11 status by mid-March with the help of $86 million in new equity and debt-holder agreements to restructure their debt on the company.

Ener1, whose own investments include a stake in now-bankrupt battery-electric-vehicle maker Think, said in a statement Wednesday that all current common stock will be eliminated and that new stock will be issued to both debt holders and new equity investors. Ener1's reorganization plan was approved by the U.S. bankruptcy court in New York's southern district.

The company declared bankruptcy the month after Ener1 was delisted from the NASDAQ stock exchange. Last summer, Ener1 restated its 2010 losses to $165 million from a $69 million loss because of its investment in Think. The Norwegian automaker went bankrupt last June after receiving a $118.5 million grant from the U.S. government. Think was since bought out by Russian investor Boris Zingarevich.
Continue reading Ener1 plans to emerge from bankruptcy in March with $86 million equity infusion

Ener1 plans to emerge from bankruptcy in March with $86 million equity infusion originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 13:56:00 EST.
If you were smitten by the little electric Think City and thought the company's recent bankruptcy put the kibosh on your chances of ever owning one of the plastic-paneled car, then *ahem, think again. It seems there are still some of the city runabouts to be had if you look in the right place.

One such location is Green Wheels in Chicago, IL. The dealership, as the name suggests, specializes in all-electric and hybrid vehicles and has a couple post-rebated demos on hand they can sell for as low as $17,995. If you're willing to lay out $31,500 for a brand-new one - and remember, there are rebates still available in some states that can bring that initial sticker down below $20,000 - they have a couple of those as well and say that they have access to more. While that price is nicely down from the pre-bankruptcy $36,495 MSRP, it's a little uncomfortably close to that of the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i. Still, we liked the little coupe when we drove it and for some, this car just might be the bee's knees.

If you do happen to make the trip to Green Wheels, you might also get a chance to see the BYD e6 in person. The dealership will be offering the Chinese all-electric crossover later this year and already has one on the lot you can look over.
Think may be bankrupt, but cars are still available originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 12 Feb 2012 16:31:00 EST.
Ener1, a maker of lithium-ion batteries for electric-drive vehicles and a major investor in now-bankrupt electric-vehicle maker Think, has gone bankrupt itself.

Ener1, which was also making batteries for the Norwegian automaker, said late last week that as much as $81 million in <strike>debt will be restructured</strike> (see below) as part of its Chapter 11 filing. The company's stock was de-listed from the Nasdaq stock exchange in December.

New York-based Ener1 appears to have been pulled down by the failure of Think, which in September 2009 received a $118.5 million grant from the U.S. government but which still went bankrupt last June. Ener1 last August had to restate its 2010 losses to $165 million from $69 million because of the failure of Think. Think has since been acquired by a group headed by Russian investor Boris Zingarevich, who is also a major investor in Ener1.

Ener1 last September announced changes to its senior leadership team, including the resignation of Charles Gassenheimer, the man formerly in charge as the Chief Executive Officer of Ener1. The president of Ener1 and CEO of EnerDel, Christopher Cowger, replaced Gassenheimer as CEO.

UPDATE: We received the following clarification from Westcomm, doing PR for Ener1:

The story mentions that the company stated that as much as $81 million in debt would be restructured as part of the filing. The $81 million is actually the amount of equity funding the company will receive after exiting bankruptcy. It is outlined in the third paragraph of the press release.

Also, the reporting regarding the grant has a slight error.

Below are some points that will help clarify the situation:

Ener1 is the parent company of several subsidiaries, including EnerDel.

EnerDel, not Ener1 was awarded the Department of Energy (DOE) grant. To date, EnerDel has received 50/50 cost-share reimbursements of approximately $55 million, for which it had to originally invest $55 million of its own funds.

Richard Canny, who sometimes writes for AutoblogGreen, joined the XL Hybrids board of directors this past week and said in a statement that he is ready to promote the company's aftermarket hybrid powertrain system that is supposed to improve fuel efficiency by up to 20 percent. Canny said in a statement that, "XL Hybrids has a unique and proprietary technology system that offers a hybrid drive solution to fleets at a fraction of the installed cost of other systems - and achieves a payback within three to four years. The company is well placed to grow quickly and I am happy to be joining the team."
Canny also worked at Ford for 25 years, where his highest position was president and CEO of Ford South America.
Looks like things that were bad with Ener1 (and the Think City electric car) are about to go to worse. After a string of bad news (see here, here, here and here), the latest shoe to drop is the news that the NASDAQ suspended Ener1 from the stock exchange. The fight has apparently gone out of Ener1, since the company said it has no plans to appeal and will thus be permanently delisted from NASDAQ. The stock (previously HEV and now HEVV), which used to trade at over $4 a share, will now be "penny-stock status on the over-the-counter bulletin board" and "more difficult to buy and sell," writes the Indianapolis Business Journal.

If we didn't know better, we'd expect a fresh round of Solyndra/Fisker-like criticism over this case, since Think received a $118.5 million grant - not a loan, this time - in August 2009. There are even Russians involved somehow.
Ener1 to be booted from NASDAQ stock exchange originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 31 Oct 2011 14:09:00 EST.

When electric vehicle maker Think filed for bankruptcy last spring, it owed millions of dollars to EnerDel subsidiary Ener1. Ener1 was also a major investor in Think and a lot of the company's worth was tied up with the Norwegian EV maker. Any way you slice it, Think's failure put Ener1 in a bind. They were unable to collect on their debts, and their investments were suddenly worthless. Just recently, Ener1 was forced to restate their losses in 2010 from $69 million all the way up to $165 million as they factored in the departure of Think.

It follows that this was a big setback for investors in Ener1. According to many small investors in the company, it was also a big surprise. Investors have reported that Ener1 had been making positive statements about the condition of Think, leading those investors to overestimate the value of both Think and Ener1. As Ener1 was moving to restate its losses, investors were lining up to take the company to court. However, proving this type of case is often difficult and investors will have to show that Ener1 was both aware of Think's true condition and that they reported false information leading to a loss for the investors.

To complicate matters, Think has been acquired by a group headed by Russian investor Boris Zingarevich, who is also a major investor in Ener1. Zingarevich isn't exactly a newcomer on the scene, since he had a sizable stake in the company before it failed. So for the most part Think is operating under new ownership that's remarkably like the old ownership, Ener1 is still supplying the batteries, and both companies are still joined at the hip, but a lot of money has gone away.

Those TV viewers mourning the end of certain soap operas on daytime may find they can get similar enjoyment out of watching what happens next in this saga.
Battery maker EnerDel under fire over Think claims originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 20 Oct 2011 18:43:00 EST.
For years, CEO Charles Gassenheimer was the friendly, public face of battery maker Ener1, speaking with AutoblogGreen many times over the years about his company's work with Think and Volvo and others. The company's history was long fraught with difficulty because of the way it was tied to Think and its bankruptcy problems, but Gassenheimer was always optimistic about the prospects of Ener1's lithium-ion batteries being used for automobiles and stationary grid storage. Last week, he resigned from his position after a year in which Ener1 stock dropped 95 percent.

In a similar story, Tom Gage has stepped down from the CEO position at AC Propulsion, to "allow AC Propulsion to align more closely with its investors and expanding EV component market in China," according to a company statement.

We have no idea what the real cause of all this turmoil is, but OTC Equity is pretty sure that Ener1's problem lies not specifically with the battery maker but with the lithium-ion industry as a whole. Specifically, "At its current pace of production by 2015 there will be more than double the supply of lithium-ion batteries compared to the number of electric vehicles manufactured by car companies."

OTC doesn't say how it calculates this double supply, but we heard the exact same thing two years ago from Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. Since 2009, the prospects for electric drive vehicles of all stripes looks stronger now than ever before - and no-one is seriously proposing any chemistry other than li-ion for the near-term. If the battery makers can build a whole bunch of batteries, we're pretty sure they will get used.
Are Ener1, AC Propulsion shake-ups signs that demand for li-ion batteries is low? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 13:02:00 EST.
Ener1 announced changes to its senior leadership team this week, including the resignation of Charles Gassenheimer, the man formerly in charge as the Chief Executive Officer of Ener1.

The president of Ener1 and CEO of EnerDel, Christopher Cowger, will replace Gassenheimer as CEO. Board member Thomas Snyder will step in to take over Gassenheimer's role of non-executive chairman of Ener1's board. The changes are effective immediately and Ener1 fully expects Gassenheimer to resign from the firm's board of directors. In addition, Ener1's board of directors has been expanded to ten seats to include Cowger.

This shake-up comes amidst concerns of Ener1's future viability. Ener1 stock (NASDAQ ticker symbol HEV) closed Tuesday at $0.19 and has plummeted 94 percent over the past year.
Continue reading Executive shake-up underway at Ener1 as CEO resigns

Executive shake-up underway at Ener1 as CEO resigns originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 14:04:00 EST.
Ener1, a pioneer of lithium-ion batteries for plug-in vehicles, has warned that it might not have sufficient funds to remain operational as a result of losses from its investment in Think Global, a Norwegian automaker that declared bankruptcy in late June.

In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, New York-based Ener1 announced its restated financial results. The preliminary statement shows that Ener1's estimated 2010 net loss shot up to $165.3 million. That's nearly $100 million more in losses than Ener1 had previously reported.

Ener1 says that, while investigations are not yet complete, the adjustments "were the result of one or more material weaknesses." Ener1 says it's "in the process of determining whether the company has sufficient liquidity to fund its operations." That all sounds rough, but the full story is not yet public. Ener1 says it will issue a detailed release when "the evaluation of the restatement is completed."
Continue reading Think Global bankruptcy drags Ener1 down

Think Global bankruptcy drags Ener1 down originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 10:54:00 EST.
Electric automaker Think rises once again. Following the company's latest bankruptcy and rumors that the long-running EV maker would be bought by Turkey's BD Otomotiv, it is now official that Russian investor Boris Zingarevich has taken hold of Think and will relaunch the company. Zingarevich, who already had "indirect ownership of less than 40%" of Think's shares, was the winning bidder in a bankruptcy proceeding last month and now plans to relaunch a refined Think City in early 2012 with help from established partners Ener1 (the U.S.-based li-ion battery maker) and Valmet Automotive (the production company in Finland). Think's headquarters are in Norway, and this will remain the case.

Since all the players are the same, Zingarevich's prepared statement seems a bit strange (read it in full after the jump). He said:

With the potential of working with the leading American automotive lithium-ion battery maker and Europe's top automobile engineering and manufacturing company, I believe we could have exactly the right combination and value chain to ensure that the brand will be increasingly competitive in the worldwide electric vehicle market.

Well, Think had that same combination before the bankruptcy, and look where that got them. Aside from the Valmet production for Europe, Think's one offering - the Think City - had also been built in Elkhart, IN and a local media there says that production "could soon resume according to company officials." We'll see.

Here's a twist. After Think filed once again for bankruptcy, rumors floated around that Turkey's BD Otomotiv was interested in buying the Norwegian electric car company. Those have quieted down, but Ener1, the battery maker that was invested in the automaker, is Think's largest creditor and is trying to recover around $32 million in unpaid loans and accounts receivable. Into this picture steps (again) Russian businessman Boris Zingarevich.

Zingarevich sits on the board of the Ener1 Group and, according to past reports, has "indirect ownership of less than 40%" of its shares. This connection - and the fact that Zingarevich has "close ties" to Russian elites like President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin - possibly possibly hurt Think's DOE loan application. Now, Norwegian media outlet NA24 (Google translate version) is saying that Zingarevich is has purchased what is left of Think. Our contacts at Think North America tell us that they can't confirm or deny the accuracy of the NS24 report, since Think North America is not directly involved in the bankruptcy process. We'll see what else we can learn in the near future. Thanks to Robert for the tip!

BD Otomotiv, a sustainable transport group based in Turkey, is reportedly in advanced negotiations with the Norwegian court-appointed trustee of Think Global to rescue the automaker from bankruptcy.

Earlier this week, BD Otomotiv chairman Osman Boyner, released this statement detailing the company's intentions:

Our intentions are simple: to bring Think out of bankruptcy and make it the affordable urban electric vehicle for Europe it was always designed to be. We have the manufacturing capabilities and sales network to do this, and combined with a core group of retained Think talent in Norway, we aim to launch new platforms and the next generation of vehicles if successful in our bid. We know our aspirations are realistic and are extremely hopeful for the future of the brand.

In recent years, BD Otomotiv has focused almost solely on electric transportation. The sustainable transport group owns and operates vehicle production facilities in Turkey and Italy, as well as a recycling plant for automotive batteries. In addition, BD Otomotiv has an extensive network of sales and service centers across Europe and is a distributor of Fisker Automotive and BYD vehicles.

As of right now, it's way too early to tell if BD Otomotiv's attempt to rescue Think will be a success, but you can bet that we'll keep you up-to-date on this developing story.

We're all passionate about saving the world, but the amount of enthusiasm we each have is different for everybody. What's your passion level? Let's turn the question into a sliding scale; on one end sits, say, BP, while on the other end, we find Ed Begley Jr. It's a big scale. If you find yourself edging close to the Begley side of the spectrum, you're no doubt paying attention to the fresh crop of all-electric cars on the market.

Electric automaker Think hopes you've been paying attention.

At least, it did up until last week when the company filed for bankruptcy a second time. Clearly, attempting to bring a relatively affordable electric vehicle to the masses is difficult without federal funding (Tesla Motors) or the bank account of a major automotive manufacturer (Nissan Leaf). Think has been down this road before, and it's possible that a group of investors could arrive to save the day. But for the company to be successful, the cost of its car, called the City, would need to come down and marketing dollars would need to go up, both of which are easier said than done. Is Think's machine even worth saving? (Continue reading...)

The bankruptcy filing by Think Global makes us question the future of Think's only North American factory.

Located in Elkhart, IN, Think's U.S. production site was initially touted as an economic boost for an area hammered by job loss in the recreational vehicle industry. Think's grand scheme called for its Elkhart crew to work 10-hour shifts, seven days a week in order to pump out 2,500 Think Cities in 2011. Beyond that, Think manufacturing director, Karl Turner, previously told AutoblogGreen that the Elkhart factory could churn out up to 60,000 of the pint-sized electric vehicles a year. Of course, that was all before Think Global's bankruptcy filing this week.

So, will Think's financial struggles affect operation in Elkhart? Well, according to Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore, the automaker insists that the factory won't be impacted by Think Global's bankruptcy filing. However, Moore is concerned, and rightly so. The Elkhart Truth reports that production at the Elkhart site was shut down recently as its employees waited on parts needed to assemble Think Cities. That shutdown was prior to Think Global's bankruptcy filing, which leads us to believe that the situation will continue to get worse. A spokesperson for Think North America didn't respond to phone and email messages from the Associated Press and Inside Indiana Business seeking comment.

Think City - Click above for high-res image gallery

On the one hand, the fact that Think needed to file for bankruptcy - again - yesterday was not a big surprise. The company has had a hard time selling its plasticky two-seat commuter car in a world that also includes the cheaper, better-equipped Nissan Leaf. The Think City starts at $36,495 in the U.S. (but a strange combination of incentives meant it was possible for some lucky people to get one for just $17,995 recently), while the Leaf, even if it is a different segment vehicle, starts at $32,780 ($25,280 after federal incentives). On the other hand, the reason for the bankruptcy filing are not at all transparent, so we went out and got as much information as we could about what happened behind the scenes. Turns out, sources were willing to talk, but only off the record, so take what follows as the truth from people who were there (or were close) but who do need to protect themselves. Here's the story:

Some time around December of 2010 or January of 2011, it became pretty clear inside Think that the company was starting to run into financial difficulties. The Norwegian company had excess inventory of around 500 cars that could not be sold, and some were shipped to the U.S. to try and move them here. A four-seat version was introduced (well, reintroduced, since it was first promised in 2008), but only a small handful were ever delivered. There was talk that Russian investor Boris Zingarevich, who is Ener1's largest shareholder thus had the most to lose if Think went under (battery company Ener1 has been Think's supply partner since 2007), would step in - and he did provide some short-term loans - but it was not enough to save Think. Its partners were hurt - Ener1 took a $71 million hit in its Q1 earnings call earlier this year - and at some point this spring, Think City production was halted at Valmet. It seems that Think stopped paying some suppliers earlier this year, too. In May, Ener1 ended its deal with Think.
When Ener1 abruptly ended its four-year-long deal with Think Global, saying that its investment was "impaired," we had reason to worry. Now comes word that the struggles continue to mount at Think Global and that the automaker has filed for bankruptcy. Again.

According to a statement released by Ener1, Think Global will liquidate its assets in an attempt to pay back its creditors. Apparently, Ener1 has stepped in and is currently in charge of recovering some $32 million in unpaid loans and accounts receivable from Think Global.

Ener1 spokesman Brian Sinderson, told the Indiana Business Journal that "the amount [Ener1 is owed] could change based on the extent to which funds are recovered as a result of the liquidation of Think Global."

The IBJ could not reach Think spokesman Brendan Prebo for comment on this developing story. Hat tip to Mart and Orjan!
Ready or not, here it is:

Think, the world's leading dedicated electric vehicle manufacturer, announced that it was awarded a contract to supply pure electric, zero-emission vehicles to the federal government. With a contract in hand from the U.S. General Services Administration, Think is now open for business to the thousands of federal agencies that purchase or lease vehicles through the GSA each year.

That announcement sort of squashes rumors that Think either landed a major investor, would make management changes, revise its production goals or even ink out a joint venture.

Lizabeth Ardisana, Think's director of sales, says that:

If you want to sell vehicles to fleets, it's imperative to be on the GSA contract. This is a game-changing contract for Think.

Let us hope that this game-changing contract guides Think through the choppy waters that it may encounter in the months that lie ahead. Hat tip to Mart!
