Nissan Hybrid coming in 2007
Consumers in the eight states that have adopted California’s strong vehicle emissions requirements will be the only ones who can buy the just-announced 2007 Altima hybrid, which will go on sale early next year, Green Car Congress points out.
Altima is Nissan’s best-selling model, and the Altima Hybrid version adds an electric motor and generator to the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).
Nissan’s press release says the company believes the eight states (California, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Vermont) are “among the strongest markets for hybrid vehicles”. Any other states ready to follow suit? If Tennessee were to adopt the California standards, Nissan could even sell the Altima hybrid in the state where the car will be produced. The new Altima HEV will be assembled at the Nissan North America Manufacturing Smyrna, Tennessee plant. It’s a long road trip from there to the nearest dealer who will sell the car.
