Panamericana 2006 update: crossing the Panama Canal

It's time to check in with our biodiesel-loving Panamericana 2006 team again. They group is driving from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in three Volkswagen SUVs in 15 days. If you missed previous entries, you can see what they've been up to here.

May 12 – Decision time. The team decides that they will push on, even though they're wicked behind schedule and frustrated. Personal pressures as well as accidents here and there fray the nerves. But the team ends up making the flight over the Panama Canal at 7:45 p.m., while one member rides in the cargo plane at 9 p.m. after staying behind to fix all sorts of problems with one of the vehicles.

May 13 and 14
– The team drives across Columbia in 43 hours, escorted the entire way by a military unit of about 200-300 soldiers and their vehicles.  After the hectic past few days, the no-hassle driving these two days makes for a shorter diary entry from the team. They've earned it. At the Ecuadorian border, they're met by another military escort for the next leg of the journey.
