E85 engine builders win prize

A team of South Dakota mechanics from Yankton Auto Machine earned second-place honors in an engine-building contest with a motor that runs on ethanol. Problems with the engine efficiency tests proved to be a setback but the team still built an engine that scored well enough in the horsepower test. There were six teams in the contest sponsored by the American Engine Rebuilders Assn.

South Dakota ranks fourth in the nation in total ethanol production, which inspired the team to build the E85 engine.
