European Parliament votes for Euro-5

The European Parliament has adopted a legislative report by the European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety that we previously reported on. The report favours revising the current emission limits for motor vehicles (the Euro-4 standards, which have applied since January 2005), which includes NOx, hydrocarbons and particulate matter emitted by diesel engines. The new Euro-5 standards will apply from September 2009 for passenger cars and September 2010 for light commercial vehicles. Transition periods extending up to January 2011 and January 2012 respectively have been agreed upon after which national authorities must refuse to grant approval to new vehicles which do not comply with the Euro-5 standards.

In addition, members of the European Parliament are already calling for stating dates for Euro-6 standards be set. It is suggested that Euro-6 standards become active on September 2014 for private cars and September 2015 for light commercial vehicles. If these dates are adopted, transition periods for manufacturers to prepare their models for compliance will run up to September 2015 and September 2016 respectively.
