BMW moves up diesel plans to start with the X5

When BMW initially announced plans to bring clean diesel engines to the US market they indicated that the 5-series would be the first installation late in 2008. Now Winding Road is reporting that after speaking to some BMW reps at an event in Phoenix, the company is moving up their plans. Instead of the 5-series sedans, the first US BMW diesel of the modern era will be the X5 in mid-2008. They are estimating a price of around $47,000 for the 3.0L inline 6 diesel X5 and fuel economy ratings of 21/33 city highway.

Good, but don't stop with the X5 what ever you do. Bring Diesels in the 5-series sedans. Preferably with AWD. 535xd...

I don't want a flippen' diesel SUV! Bring it in a 3 series wagon and I'm listening, otherwise it's just a case of big expensive toys for little rich boys.

I'd love to upgrade my Golf TDI. I love the car, I'd just like something a little nicer and I don't care too much for the E320.
BUT, I would NEVER consider an SUV. SUV drivers don't give a crap about efficiency, that's why they drive an SUV in the first place. And people that care about efficiency don't give a crap about SUV's. Brilliant move BMW.

How about the X5 with the dual turbo 2.0 inline 4 cylinder. Lots of space and plenty of HP for the average user.

Don't care about the x5, but would really love to see the 320d or 520d here. I drive a TDI now and would like to move into something better in a year or two. And please- don't lump me in with the "greens".
