The Top Ten electric vehicles you can buy right now (for the most part)

I think all the news of the Tesla Roadster and the Chevy Volt that came out since last summer has reminded a lot of people that there are some serious contenders to the gasoline engine. The electric vehicle (EV) community certainly thinks 2006 was a good year for EVs. In fact, the past has seen some truly cool EVs, and the list of retired EVs is long and, for some, emotional: the EV1, the Ranger EV, the RAV4 EV and so on. But there should be no time for mourning and instead a look toward the future. Actually, we don't even need to guess what great EVs are coming down the pipe, there are already some wicked cool EVs available today. If you're ready to get off the gas in 2007, consider one of these, the Top Ten Electric Cars of 2007 (Aside from the Roadster, which certainly deserves the Number 1 spot, the list is in no real order).
Tesla Roadster - This car has reinvigorated the EV market like no other. While technically no one can buy it this year (all 100 vehicles that will be available later in 2007 have already been spoken for, I can't help but place it at No. 1. UEV Spyder - Universal Electric Vehicle's Spyder made an impressive debut at the Santa Monica Alt Car Expo last December, even though I heard a lot of people ask, "Is this the Tesla?" This EV will be available with different battery configurations at different price levels (some comparable to the Roadster). You don't hear so many people talk the Spyder up, but it seems to share many of the same qualities that make the Roadster so exciting: speed, zero emissions, and sports-car styling. (More)
Phoenix SUT – Yeah, it's expensive ($45,000), but EVs aren't cheap. Heck, retired Toyota RAV4 EVs regularly go for more than $50,000 on eBay, and the batteries in those things are old. Phoenix has been working with Altairnano Technologies on new batteries and is bringing this sports utility truck to market with better range than the RAV4 (but, admittedly, not as much size). Phoenix says they hope to sell 500 SUTs by the end of the year. Perhaps a better name will pump up sales. (More)
Miles ZX40 – While the Spyder and the Roadster don't really ask the driver to make any sacrifices (aside from in the bank account), EVs like those from Miles are not a replacement for a "standard" car, but a solid contender for second vehicle for certain families or individuals, or as a main vehicle for those who don't have to go very far. The Miles ZX40 is like a lot of NEVs – limited to a top speed of 25 mph, a range of around 50 miles per charge and a price of about $12,000-$20,000. ZENN – Another player in the NEV field, ZENN's cars are "zero emission, no noise." Get it? ZENN. These NEVs have a lower range than Miles' offerings (only about 35 miles) and are a bit smaller, too. When I drove one in D.C. last year the battery was on its last legs and in need of a charge, but still drove well. The various options can add up to $2,500 to the $12,500 base price. But the most exciting part about ZENN's offerings are yet to come: the EESTOR ultra capacitor is still shrouded in mystery, but the potential is great for this new EV power source (as is the disappointment if the EESTOR doesn't live up to the hype). But GEM electric vehicles have been available for years and the company has a wide range of models available (two through six seats, with or without a flatbed) and prices ($7,000-$12,500). Smart EV - Available in Switzerland and the UK, the tiny Smart EVs are zero-emission versions of their fossil-fuel drinking cousins. These cars share the easy-parking abilities and unique styling of the standard Smarts, but are only available in the fortwo configuration and only to "to blue chip companies who are happy to meet our requirements to power the cars using only renewable energy sources," says Smart UK. Mullen L1X-75 – Some of our readers are skeptical of Hybrid Technologies, maker of the Mullen L1X-75, saying their press releases promise more than they can ever deliver. The L1X-75 certainly promises a lot - 100-mile range on a 4-6 hour charge - and this comes at a price ($125,000). Still, the sports car look will attract the eye of those you zip by, and I'd certainly give one a whirl. Kurrent – A tiny and very distinctive-looking NEV, the Kurrent's price ($10,600) includes home delivery because, as American Electric Vehicle president Scott Thornton told AutoblogGreen, if AEV allowed the Kurrent to be sold at just any dealership, the customer might not be able to drive it home thanks to U.S. laws that restrict NEVs to roads with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or below. For Number 10, I cannot ignore all of the homemade EVs and converted EVs. People have been creating their own electric vehicles for year, and the trend continues. For examples, read more here, here and here.
There are more EVs available today, and if you feel I should've included any in this Top Ten list, add it yourself in the comments. Also, there are a lot of upcoming EVs to get excited about - Tesla's WhiteStar sedan, Zap!'s Lotus APX - so if you're sick of gassing up your car, consider going all-electric. They're not for everyone, but they might be perfect for you.

If you start from scratch, or lets say 1916 technology, it is possible to make a car that is far more efficient than these listed vehicles.
Start-up car companies of that day anticipated tandem seating arrangements. They were ahead of their time, since family car values, and cheap gasoline made such arrangements unnecessary.
Today, the right front seat is usually empty. But we still insist on dragging it around with us. If we can get over that, then very efficient cars are possible.
Very efficient cars are very effectively powered by electric apparatus.
Otherwise, electric cars are not necessarily more efficient than their gasoline powered equivalents.

Okay, I am seriously looking to purchase a new car in the next few months, my 12 year old Jeep isn't cutting it anymore.
I desperately need something similar to my 1989 Honda CRX that got 50 miles to the gallon. No that is not a typo, it's been 20 years and that Honda I had gets better mileage than 99% of the cars on the road today.
Okay, so i've read many sites and the above posts w/ everyone's favorite EV posted. Yet, several of these links are now dead and the cars that are for sale are $85,000 or more! YIKES!!!
My question: Is there any EV out there I can buy that fits 2 people, is safe for highway use and costs $25k (ballpark).
Oh, the Chevy Volt is a joke. Chevy has been trying to improve their image over as a green company and totes the Volt around to auto shows for press. They'll never never never ever ever make the volt. Really. won't happen. Go to the Chevy site, they don't have one car that gets better than 23mile to the gallon! they are far from a green company. Okay, I just hate their fake advertising.
so, can anyone point me to a $25k EV that sits 2 and is hwy safe?

Thanks but no thanks. I will wait for an all aluminium car with 1.0 liter engine weighing less than 1500 pounds yet look big due to lightweightness (50% lighter than all steel car). Aluminium can be up to 66% lighter but some thickness is needed to strengthen aluminum cars to even up with thinner but heavier steel. You understand what I am saying?? Dont buy any hogwash from writers that aluminium cars are too expensive. We already have aluminium bicyles for same prices. It is just that we dont produce or mine enough for more aluminium. That is the only whole reason for that.. Enough of the flunky arguments on aluminium...

Check out Mag-Trans Corp. in Alma, Wisconsin. They will retro-fit a small new vehicle ($20,000) with an electric motor, a magnetic transmission (no mechanical parts to wear out) and a battery recharging system that uses the shock absorbers to contimually recharge the batteries so you can take extended trips at highway speeds without stopping to recharge. This guy (Robert Albertson) is a genius!

One of the best electric cars Reva (www.revaindia.com) made in India under a US collaboration is not mentioned here. It meets EU specs and is available in both UK and Europe. The Price around $ 10000. Please include the car in your list. KSR Menon, Dubai, UAE

I might be jumping in late to this conversation but has anyone any in person experience with Smith electric vehicles...they are just now making their way into America and from what it seems these vehicles are the real deal. 120 mile range, top speeds of 50 to 70 mph and fast acceleration. Im sure they are'nt cheap but it seems they are the most advanced actual working models out there.

The speed of an electric vehicle in town is not really the issue - 25 mph for an electric bus for example would be great.

Don't forget the (renamed) Corbin Sparrow, now the NmG (no more gas). Freeway capable (barely). Unfortunately now sells for more than twice the price when it was the original maker.
For me the happy breakpoint is 30-60-60. >$30k, 60 mph (Speed limit 70 around here) with a 60 MPC (long commute). Induction AC (more efficient) because I live in Las Vegas. Still waiting on one that can do that.

What about the Aptera Type 1? They are supposed to begin production this summer and range is reported to be over 100 miles percharge and they are priced around $30,000. You can find them at www.aptera.com

Can't wait to convert my Scion Xb to electric!
Watch out for the big triad stumbling block. I.E., politicians-Big Oil-the Auto Industry. They will push hydrogen cells to keep their bazillion clammy fingers in the distribution pot at their gazillion gas stations. The hydrogen cell cars that came out this year did not pop up over night.
Hydrogen cell formula: burn some energy making hydrogen cells, burn some more delivering hydrogen. Give me a break!
Hey Big Oil, I have my distribution system! It's called an electric outlet.

Please check out the affordable EV ($15,995), assembled in the USA. A real 4 door hatch back for 5 passengers made of steel (NOT PLASTIC). All the luxuries/features we are use to (ie. air conditioning, sunroof, AM/FM/CD,dual airbags, etc. etc.)

25th at prensent , there is some factories could make the car which highest speed could reach to 60mile so easily, but could n't support 50miles every fully charged in practice.
33rd : at prensent, there is no factory could make the EV car could load 7people, if possible, it will infect cars' speed and distence of run.
46th, impossible buy the car could follow your requirment, the possible price may $60,000.

Ten years ago I was involved with a company "Solectra" that converted small Chevys to all electric vehicles. The one my company had ran well and we had no problems with. My question are they still in busness??
