Geneva Motor Show Preview: Subaru to unveil diesel boxer engine
Last fall Subaru announced plans to introduce a diesel engine with their classic boxer configuration. At next month's Geneva Motor Show, Subaru will be displaying the new oil-burning horizontally opposed four cylinder engine. Subaru plans to install the new engine in the Legacy and Outback starting early in 2008. According to Car magazine the engine is expected to produce about 165hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. SUBARU 'BOXER' TURBO DIESEL IN GENEVA WORLD PREMIERE
The world's first horizontally-opposed turbo diesel engine – offering exceptional refinement and smoothness – makes it debut at the 77th Geneva International Motor Show next month on the Subaru stand.
The Japanese all-wheel drive specialist – renowned for producing cars with outstanding chassis dynamics and active safety – will be displaying an entire drivetrain at the 'show.
Subaru believes passionately in its 'boxer' engines which are more compact than in-line units and provide a much lower centre-of-gravity.
This reduces body roll for safer cornering and also enhances handling precision such as during a sudden lane-change manoeuvre on a motorway.
Due for its first vehicle application early next year, the Subaru 'boxer' turbo diesel is a highly rigid unit with low levels of noise and vibration.
Not only does this eliminate the need for a balancer shaft which counters uneven combustion pressures and general roughness, but Subaru's first diesel is as compact as its petrol sisters and combines unusually strong pulling power at low engine speeds with high-rev throttle-response.
Both the engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive drivetrain will be unveiled as part of Subaru's press conference at the 'show on March 6 at 10.15 am.

About time!
Subaru has been minus its "wacky projects" (ie leading edge tech platforms) since the XT6. It seemed to slip into Outback and WRX contentment, and forgot about forward tech, seeming to become an almost American car co- (with much better products of course). With some of the far out stuff they did in the 70s-90, I thought they'd have fusion powered antigravity drive by now. Hopefully this will signal their awakening from their cash income on proven products stupor and getting back to severely pushing the efficiency+performance+forward-thinking envelope.
I lust for their diesel engine. Can't wait. Screw Congress for being such a bunch of clean-diesel dolts.
Don't worry guys, the oil industry will keep bribing you on diesel fuel concessions!

I'm a big subaru fan. Hopefully, this engine will realize a noticable MPG improvment over its gasoline betheren. I will be an early adopter once the Tribeca is equiped.

think they'll ever come out with a diesel for the lil justy.... with the modifications to mine i'l allready getting better MPG and performance then those hybrid electrics

This is fantastic news! I am still waiting for Subaru to come out with a compact awd pickup to compete against ranger, frontier etc. Equipped with this diesel engine it will be bulletproof and unstoppable.
