Thailand has to import more palm oil to support biodiesel production
Thailand has been moving heavily to promote the use of biodiesel produce from palm oil. Unfortunately, they are already running short of the palm oil, so now the government is examining whether to allow imports of the oil. The Thai government Oil Fund may also introduce new incentives to get growers to plant more trees. While biofuels may be environmentally beneficial for replacing fossil fuels, far more fuel will be needed to make any significant impact on petroleum use. To get those quantities of fuel, a lot progress will need to be made on new higher yield methods of producing the fuels. Corn, soy, palms and other crops will need to be supplanted by cellulose and algae to really have an impact.

The desirability of biodiesel is more than offset by the clear-cutting of the tropics in order to plant palms. It would be far better to use an inedible oil.
It seems to me that algae would be the best available feedstock for biodiesel. However, this apparently hasn't caught on despite some rather compelling advantages, and I can only think of two possible reasons for this: 1) politics (and the financial manipulation thereof), or 2) some undesirable characteristic of algae biodiesel which which I am not yet familiar.
Of the two, I expect the first is more likely.

A new study looking at carbon emissions from drained wetlands in South East Asia suggested total emissions of 33 tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of palm oil produced making it far more damaging than burning fossil fuels.

We're just not getting this biofuels thing right and we need to stop and think very hard about what we're doing and what the best options are. Charging ahead like we are is going to lead to big trouble.

We are developing a prototype for the growing of biodiesel fuel from jatropha on 200 acres in Eastern Malaysia. Are there environmental concerns with the growing of jatropha? Also we will developing algae ponds, who is doing the best research on production of biodiesel from algae?
