Easy to park, easy to enforce parking with: Toronto PD's smart fortwos

The Toronto Police Services is trying to lessen its environmental impact by adjusting the way it goes about some of its daily activities. To that end, the cops have added a pair of Honda Civic Hybrids and a pair of smart fortwo diesels to the fleet. The idea behind the change is to utilize vehicles that are easier to operate and park in the the denser urban environment. The smarts are being used for parking enforcement, where the aggravation one feels at seeing Five-0 writing you a parking ticket is presumably mitigated by the sight of the cute little two-seater wearing a police car costume. ("Oh, isn't that just darling?")
Of course, when you're paying said ticket, you won't remember the car as being so cute anymore.

Smart diesel in Canada? So I'm assuming Canada doesn't have the U.S. emmision standards keeping the Smart diesel out of the U.S.

Joseph, they don't, which is why our friends to the north might get the MINI Cooper D as well.

There are emission standards, but not as stringent for diesels as the US. They do have some bite however. VW was not able to sell any TDI diesels in Canada for MY 2007 as they were too dirty. They will be coming back when their new 50 state legal TDI is available for sale. VW Canada did cheat a bit by flooding dealer lots with tons of 06 Jetta TDIs to hold them over until early 08 TDI models can be brought on to dealer lots...hopefully soon. It looks like the fortwo CDi was able to just squeak by for MY 2007, which did see some tightening in diesel emissions regs as in the US...just not as tight.

I've seen these around town. One of the smarts enforce my neighborhood, and is driven by a 6-foot man, at least 200 pounds. the guy is so embarrassed that he wears his hat as low as possible and has one of those teardrop sunglasses that cover your face down to your cheekbones. every time i see him putting along, i am filled with pity.
