Business Week takes on green tech in a special report
There are some very simple ways to make green improvements in your life, like switching to CFL bulbs instead of using standard incandescent bulbs. Recycling is another rather simple way that you can make a difference. But, there are also other more complex ways that could green your life, some of which are still being invented. Biofuels are one such technology that may very well still be in their infancy. Algae is a great potential source of biofuels which remains mostly untapped. What do all of these things have in common, besides being "green"? All of these examples can be found somewhere in Business Week's Special Report on Green Tech. Business Week also covers some other interesting potentially green ideas, like getting power from giant kites or even tornadoes. Lastly, they cover companies which seem to be greening their practices while raking in that other green. Some of this is interesting reading, some of it less so, but maybe it's worth a look. Find anything there worthwhile?

Short comments on CFL. I have installed a number of these in my house, including 3-way and dimmable lamps. Problems are that they don't dim down very far (rather bright even on low setting) and their useful life is reduced by turning them on and off frequently. Two technologies which may fix this are so-called "cold cathode" CFLs, which operate at higher voltages and can be cycled without lifespan reductions, and (of course) LED-based lamps.

Another CFL thought: Of course, we're concerned about the mercury and CFLs, and the fact the few people bother to recycle fluorescent bulbs of any kind.
I hope fluorescent recycling projects pick up steam with the popularity of CFLs. I tried to find a nearby recycling location (I live near two large urban areas) awhile back - and was disappointed with the merry-go-round of web sites that all claimed to have recycling location information, but mostly just pointed to each other...

I've got about 35 CFLs in my house.Tried the 3 way and dimmable and found out they had a greatly reduced life as compared to regular CFLs. Each CFL has about 5 millagrams of mercury in it and yes they need to be turned in for recycling just like used motor oil. Sadly when I go to the house hold hazzardious waste collection site I don't see much of either of these to items.
