The diesel returns to California this week!

New diesel-powered cars have been scarce in California in recent years due to more restrictive emissions regulations than anywhere else in the country. It looks like the drought is about to end as a Southern California Mercedes dealer has started advertising availability of the new E320 Bluetec from this coming Monday. It's not clear why Mercedes-Benz of South Bay would advertise the $53,000 diesel sedan on Craigs List, but it's there. If you are in the area this week you might want to swing buy and check it out. If the Benz is a little outside of your budget don't forget the new VW Jetta CleanTDI that's coming next March.

why not the LS2/LS7? 2:53AM (10/14/2007)
$53K, I mean wow.
Boy, it's gonna be a tough row to hoe selling a $53K car based upon fuel economy. If you can afford that car, fuel costs aren't a huge issue for you.
I'm sure the Jetta will do a brisk business, it did last time it was available in California.

uuummm... The 2007 Bluetec was 50-state available too. This dealer is full of shit. I've seen new 2007 models at bay area dealers for some time.
Never trust crap posted on CL.

Lisa,
Sorry but the 2007 E320 wasn't 50 state legal. Perhaps the cars you saw there had more the 7500 miles on them? Lots of dealers would get diesels w/ just over the legal limit for non California cars.
In any case, more news on the E320 for us. Apparently it's only for Mercedes-Benz is opting to lease rather than sell the vehicle because only about 100 cars will be available. The E320 will be offered only as a lease vehicle for 2 years/24,000 miles for about $600 a month — the same rate as a gasoline E Class.
