Video: Maher's maple syrup car on Letterman
The late night talk shows are back! David Letterman has a beard and recently had Bill Maher as a guest. At about 7 minutes into the interview above, Bill and Dave talk about the Iowa primary and ethanol. Bill says the candidates pay "homage" to ethanol because it's made from corn and Iowa has corn. However, Bill thinks ethanol is a "boondoggle" and won't help with global warming. Then Bill pushes science forward with this funny exchange:
Bill: If the first primary was in Vermont, we'd be trying to run our cars on maple syrup. I promise you.
Dave: Now, would that work? That's not a bad idea. You are a genius my friend.
I can't wait for maple syrup cars. The highways would smell so good. To be fair, pancake sales might be hurt as the price of syrup skyrockets.

David Letterman seems to be going out of his way to become old and crotchety. If only the David Letterman of the early 80s were to fast-forward and see how unhip he was going to become.

Actually, my wife had a '95 Geo Prizm that had a bottle of maple syrup spill in the trunk. The trunk always smelled like syrup, and on a hot day so did the whole car. As pleasant as that might sound, it really isn't a smell you want to experience day in and day out. We sold the car in 2003, but to this day when I smell maple syrup (like EVERY MORNING when a co-worker heats her oatmeal in the kitchen outside my office) I have flashbacks to that car. I'd take the foulest gasoline exhaust any day over that, I swear!

LOL G-Daddy!
Your trauma aside, I'd take maple any day over butanol! Eacghk! That stuff is heinous in a motor.
Ever notice how some mornings diesel exhaust tastes like bacon?
But on topic, maple syrup would be a straight forward traditional fermentation. but oh--the price of the feedstock! How fast do maple trees grow? Hmm. If you processed the whole tree thermochemically...

The high point of Bill Maher's career was "D.C. Cab". After that, it was all BS.
