Detroit 2008: Volkswagen Passat CC to launch TSI engines in US market

Volkswagen has been offering their 1.4L TSI engine range in several of their European models for the past several years but has yet to make them available in the U.S. The TSI engines are reduced displacement, turbocharged direct injection engines that offer power comparable to larger engines with much improved fuel efficiency. The first of the TSI engines will arrive in the U.S. this summer with the launch of the new Passat CC. The coupe-like sedan will have a 200hp/207lb-ft 2.0L TSI as the base engine and deliver 29.8mpg. After the Passat CC hits the market the 1.4L TSI engines will get added to the Rabbit/Jetta lineups as well, probably some time in 2009.

TThe CC has the regular 2.0TFSI engine --- not a dual-charged engine.
TSI has become a marketing term (similar to quattro or 4Motion) that at times now also is applied to the 2.0TFSI. For example, in the new Tiguan --- which clearly has the 2.0TFSI engine, albeit a bit modified for yet larger, lower-end torque.
And the new dry-clutch 7-speed DSG is limited to around 180ft-lbs of torque, and thus is not applied to the 200hp/207ft-lbs 2.0 engine.

so when is it coming???? i keep hearing summer of 2008 and it's almost august. i did see one on the road here in tampa last week heading to the mothership. the vw/audi super secret test center is here. we see all kinds of unusual stuff.....

Is it 29.8 mpg hwy? 29.8 mpg city? 29.8 mpg combined?
A pushrod normally aspirated 4 spd slushbox 3.5 V6 Impala is rated 29 hwy.

It's about time we get some TSI !
I'm guessing it's 29.8 combined, based on a European test number that they converted (since an EPA test would be listed as a whole number).
Looks like a nice car, although certainly doesn't look like a VW. They're starting to lose that unique VW look (just like Volve did a few years ago).

Who cares about the impala 3.5?
That one is SO slow because it has a taller axle ratio than the 3.9V6 & the 5.3V8.
The 7 speed transmission with 1.4 engine will be as fast (if not faster) than the base impala.
