Mahindra will display diesel hybrid Appalachian truck at SAE Congress

Our good friends at Diesel Forecast have learned that the anticipted Mahindra & Mahindra diesel-hybrid truck will be on display at the SAE World Congress next month in Detroit. The Indian company's light-duty Appalachian pickup truck and Scorpio SUV should be available for sale in the U.S. by 2010 with either a diesel 2.2L four cylinder engine or diesel-hybrid options. Mahindra's Dr. Arun Jaura, who used to work for Ford on the Escape Hybrid, will also speak about the truck at the SAE event. We expect the truck to be sold in two- and four-door versions, starting in the low $20,000s (hybrids = $5,000 more). For more details, check out Diesel Forecast.

Now more like it . Hybrid trucks is where alot of time and investment needs to go . How are individuals supposed to pull a 5 tom load with a pruis ?? If one manufacturer can dominate the us hybrid truck market they could make loads of cash!

Toyota does make a hybrid Dyna (Hino Dutro) and Hino Ranger medium- and heavy-duty trucks in Asia. By "heavy duty" I mean "really big". As in "you need a special license" big.
I think they'd be more than capable of towing your boat.

It's nice to see someone releasing a compact truck. Aside from the aging Ranger, everything in this segment is rather a bit too large.
I actually drove a 2.3L/5spd Ranger a few weeks ago. Crude, but it was well-sized and did the job I needed it to do, while getting good mileage. Adding basic idle-stop would be a nice addition; the full parallel hybrid powertrain from the Escape would be better still.

psarhjinian, if you think the Ranger is crude, read the Ausie review on this thing. http://www.caradvice.com.au/4701/2007-mahindra-pikup-4x4-road-test/
The Ranger is a far better choice.

Point taken. I don't mind that the Ranger is crude per se, but I do wish Ford would add stability control and slightly better crash scores. A hybrid powertrain would be nice, too.
I can appreciate the use of a small truck, and I'm more than willing for it to be spartan, but there's a few things I'm not likely to give on.
