Thousands of iterations later, vacuum guy Dyson goes for solar EVs
You've very likely seen the commercials. The ones with the Englishman talking about all the thousands of design iterations he went through to come up with a vacuum cleaner with a big yellow plastic ball in the middle of the base. Well, he's at it again. This time around James Dyson has his crew going down the EV path. The engineers at Dyson's disposal are apparently working on an electric motor derived from the one used in the vacuum cleaners that could be used to drive an electric car. Apparently not satisfied with the performance of the G-Wiz (who would be?) Dyson wants to do better and even plans to outfit an EV with solar panels. Dyson doesn't want to build the whole car, just the powertrain, so he's looking for an automaker to collaborate with. Maybe he should give Chrysler a call. They could surely use the help. Just leave the bright yellow ball in the workshop.[Source: Daily Mail]

This is kind of ironic because people used to use "vacum cleaner motor" as a pejorative for small engine cars. Good luck Dyson guy!

The drive train shouldn't be cooler looking than the car (ha ha). If they do as good a job on the EV as they have on the vacuums, this will could be a really positive step. Scratch that. ANY further development in the EV world, especially by commercial companies with proven track records, is VERY welcome.

Dyson is a pretty sharp inventor. It is good to see him working on the efficiency side of the electric car equation.
On the storage side, there is a report that EEStor is building their EESU production facility in Cedar Park, Texas; a full, state of the art production facility that is nearing completion.

Are Dyson vacuum cleaners even any good? They sure cost a heck of a lot more and my much cheaper Bissell has given me years of trouble free service.
If they do come up with a decent electric car, lets just hope its not as over priced as their vacuum cleaners are.

Dave,regular vacuums with bags are priced almost as loss leaders cuz the company makes $$ off the bags and filters you're going to need later.And the bags are supposed to be replaced when they're only half full. Since the Dysons don't need these they need to make $$ off the vacuum itself. And apparently they do work cuz the store I work in we have to keep them off the floor otherwise they get stolen..A LOT.
