Next gen VW Rabbit may be getting 1.4 twin charged engine

2010 MK VI Volkswagen Golf
It's been reported that Eaton will be providing superchargers for use on the 1.4L TSI engines for the MK VI Golf including the Rabbit-badged version sold in the U.S. market. The 1.4L TSI is a direct injected four cylinder engine that's been offered in multiple power levels for a variety of European Volkswagen models for the past two years. The top 140 and 170 hp versions use a combination of a supercharger and a turbocharger to give a performance boost through the engine speed range. The TSI engines provide output matching larger 1.6-2.0L engines with superior fuel economy. The MK VI Golf debuts at the Paris Motor Show next week and goes on sale in the U.S. as the Rabbit next fall. Volkswagen has not yet responded to a request for comment. If the 1.4L TSI joins the U.S. lineup it will join the new 2.0L TDI and hopefully replace the current 2.5L five cylinder.

Change I can believe in.

the same power and 40 MPG rock on

40 mpg? Is that what it's rated at? I was going to ask how much better the fuel economy is. Just pressurizing the combustion chamber doesn't mean better fuel economy, as the same amount of power requires the same amount of oxygen which means the same amount of fuel, give or take. Perhaps the car is running lean enough or takes higher octane fuel?
Anyway, I guess we'll know more when we know more.

it needs 91 or higher if they keep the power and boost the same as the euro spec
The Eurospec Golf GT with the 1.4L engine gets 39MPG so i was off
I am pretty sure that's in US gallons since i got those numbers from a US site.

The 91 octane rating is the RON (research octane number). Here in the states the octane listed on the pump is the average of RON and Motor Octane. The RON rating is about 4-5 points higher than the US rating so 91 RON is about the same as 87 octane regular here.

Like all production gasoline turbo engines, you'll need to buy premium.

Not true. Ford's new EcoBoost engines are designed to run on regular as are VW's turbos

Not exactly true.
VW dumbs down their turbo engines because they know that the lowest highest grade of gas is only 91AKI, where in the 'civilized' world you can get 86,90,93AKI 91,95,98 RON
For the new EA888 in VW applications, you could get away with 89AKI mid-grade and be very happy.

The previous engine

premium would be the grade to get the best mileage.

I regularly ran 87 in my saab 9"3 all it does is turn down the boost by a few PSI

I agree w #3 (James Sonne ) ---
"the same amount of power requires the same amount of oxygen which means the same amount of fuel, give or take"
In my book, EFFICIENCY isn't lineary coupled to neither pressurizing the combustable gas nor the RON figure.
I'm inclined to believe the concept of these new IC engines is mainly an offspring of newer, more sophisticated control, thus resulting in the improved mpg.
And it's simply amazing to what length they're going to extend their efforts with this antique shit. They're simply hell-bent on heating air to build up pressure : i.e. to BURN stuff. Just like the primitive bushman we read about in school. We kids used to think: "What a fool to burn up the few twigs he's got!" - Well isn't that just what's happening inside the combustion engines ? BURNING stuff to get the trapped gas heated up ?
And in the process creating waste heat, smoke and poisonous exhausts, plus a VERY loud bang each time ?
Oh my! That's soooo primitive ! In this day and age !!

Man, you better watch what you wish for, the 2,5 liter engine is the best engine in the VW lineup, simple, BURNS Regular Gas, no supercharger or turbos to break, and the little fuel it does consumes more will balance out in cheaper cost per gallon and repair cost after the warrenty is over. Those people who dislike the engine never owened one, I do and I am over in Germany with this car and the VW dealer who service my car thinks this is one fine engine and by the way wished they can buy the golf with this engine.
