Smart fortwo sharing program, car2go, expands; could go electric
The car2go smart fortwo sharing program, started in October, is apparently a success. Daimler kicked off the program near its Ulm, Germany headquarters with just 50 cars that can be rented by the minute (19 cents), or the hour, by people who need a car (a small one) but don't want to pay a membership fee for a service like ZipCar. Currently limited to Daimler employees and their family members during this beta test, Daimler is now working on expanding car2go to other cities in Germany or across Europe, according to Automotive News Europe (subs req'd). The Ulm fleet will also be expanded to 200 cars sometime in the spring. ANE named Paris as the next likely car2go target city, but the real big new is that Daimler is considering using smart eds in future car2go programs. Yes, please.
