Detroit Preview: Lexus HS250h spied testing
We're anxiously awaiting the debut of the Lexus HS250h dedicated hybrid model at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, but we can at least tide ourselves over with a few spy shots of the sedan being tested in all of its camo'd glory. As we can clearly see, this is not a hatchback like the Prius - which Lexus is also expected to get a version of - but a sedan, complete with the trunk out back that most Americans seem to prefer. We're still unclear on exactly what will power the new sedan, though a version of the Camry Hybrid's 2.4L four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine and hybrid system seems a distinct possibility. Alternatively, an enlarged version of the new Prius' powerplant could be used. A Toyota version of the HS250h is also expected that will likely use the same powerplant but get fewer luxury goods to go along with its lower price. Expect a nickel metal hydride battery pack and fuel mileage in the 40s.

So it's a Prius with leather and a trunk.

More like a Camry hybrid with lots of bells and whistles added.

Or a Carolla with the Prius powertrain and leather interior.

Everyone seems to bash the Lexus as a "__ with leather." But in most cases there is significant difference. Better engines, quieter, better suspension, better brakes, better interior materials, nicer interior ergonomics, etc. People say the same about the Passat and the A4. The Golf and the A3. Yes, similar, but it is far more than just a badge. Whether the upgrades are worth it is up to you.
That said, wuz up with the itty-bitty wheels? Are they really THAT much more efficient? I'll reserve judgement until I see it in person, but it looks pretty sad. Lexus has never been BMW or Audi in terms of driving dynamics, but I'd hate to think they had to sacrifice all of their performance characteristics (and some semblance of aggressive looks) in the name of efficiency.

Lexus is missing an oportunity with this car here. This is the chance for Toyota to make the hybrid cool. Right now it just looks like a prius mated with a corolla. They need to make this car look mean fast and masculine, even if it is not any of those things. Giving it a passat CC roofline would be a good start, then some swolen wheel wells and extra width. Make it look like something i want to drive even if it is no fun to drive (ie see the Insight Concept)

I hope the HS250h is not just a glorified Toyota Avensis. Lexus has done a great job lately with the LS600h, RX400h and IS F. It will be a big disappointment if they do...

I agree with most of the peoples comments before me on styling. Everyone wants a car that drives nice, is good for the environment (most of us), and looks great too!
If Toyota has always been conservative in their approach to styling, Lexus should be the benchmark in design, especially when introducing a new hybrid car!
If it had some lines like an ISF with the flared fenders, clean interior, and had some punch too.....WOW!
Come on Toyota / Lexus think out side of the box, and stop investing in competing with GM, Ford, and Dodge in the big truck markets. I think it has already been proven to be a loser gamble?!Look at Honda their Accord gets better and better, big interiors, aggressive styling, great material finishes, and great engines.
North Americans want style, comfort, and want some attitude. That is why there are so many after market companies modifying the imports with wheels, suspension, and body kits.
Hmmm I wonder if Lexus was to produce a "cool" hybrid if the whole perception of hybrid as ho hum would change?

I've had a Lexus GS300 for ten years (that was the plan too). Great car. Great service. I'm getting ready for a new car and want a hybrid something.
If this hs250h rides well, is quiet, and has a nice interior, I'll have to test drive it because there doesn't seem to be many luxury hybrids available. I don't expect it will ride like the GS...it's front wheel drive and a much shorter wheelbase but I can deal with it for 40mpg!
