UPS deploys 300 CNG trucks in four states, now has 800 worldwide
UPS has announced the deployment of 300 new CNG-powered trucks in North America. The trucks have been deployed over the past month to Denver (43 units); Atlanta (46); Oklahoma City (100), and four cities in California: Sacramento (21), San Ramon (63), Los Angeles (9) and Ontario (18). This gives UPS a total of 800 vehicles across the company's worldwide fleet that burn natural gas out of a total of 1,819 UPS vehicles that use alternative fuels. The alt-energy sources include CNG, liquefied natural gas, propane, electric and hybrid electric vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany (pictured), France, Brazil, Chile, Korea and the United Kingdom. These 300 vans were not converted vehicles but designed to be CNG-capable from the start.

OK, so this is good news, UPS is making a small move away from oil and towards natural gas. Oil is cheap today but we all suppose that it will cost much more in the months and years ahead. Natural gas is also relatively cheap today and we all suppose that it will be relatively cheap and plentiful for many years to come and we can expect that forward thinking users will choose CNG over gasoline and diesel. HOWEVER, the day may come when many vehicles will use CNG and eventually we'll see shortages and high prices with natural gas. Therefore, it might be a good idea for new-home-builders in cold climates to consider an alternative to gas furnaces. In many parts of the northern US, ground source heat pumps are already cost effective. Let's not make the same mistake with natural gas as we have with oil. I understand that we're already importing lots of LNG from nations that are unfriendly to the US. Let's not get dependent again.
