VW decides BlueMotion fits gasoline cars as well, especially Passat 1.4 TSI

Volkswagen just announced that the green badge applied to its high-mpg diesel models will also be used for a gasoline model. The Passat 1.4 TSI will get the BlueMotion badge, a move that should help the car sell in markets where low CO2 emissions matter, tax-wise, like France or the Netherlands. The BlueMotion Passat gets a gearbox with higher gear rations, a chassis thats been dropped 15 mm, a fully enclosed underbody, a closed grille and a weight reduction of 30 kg. The car not only lowers CO2 emissions to 136-138 g/km and fuel consumption to 5.9 l/100km or 5.8 l/100 km when mated to 7-speed DSG (about 40 mpg U.S.), but also manages to improve performance thanks to the revised aerodynamics.

Why can't we have it? A 40mpg Passat on gasoline sounds like something I'd be interested in.

So now the "blue" labeling means almost anything... and therefore nothing?

Yes! This is the perfect example of how inflated (unrealistic) the euro-cycle results are! VW takes a passat, US rated at 19/29 mpg, makes some tweaks and puts in a smaller engine, and the car tests at 40 MPG on the Euro-cycle! ! ! BOLLOCKS, I say, back to the Europeans. Tell me how much real-world FE will be improved. I suggest we all start repeating the 89.6 mpg that the new Prius is rated for on the Japan's 10-15 cycle in our prayers.

A realistic highway mileage for this car might be around 35mpg. Still not bad.

To get from NEDC to real world consumption add 15%. Really not that great a difference so calm down.

This is a dynamite little engine that gets close to diesel MPG. I would love a honda/toyota or heck even GM version, but a VW with dual charging (Turbo + Super)? No thanks.

It doesn't say whether the mileage is official or just VWs own highway numbers.
I like the idea to optimize the chassi and the gears and reduce the engine.
There is a CNG version of this car as well...
But with the DSG is quite expensive? About +25000 euro.
Probably a nice competitor to Ford Fusion though, we'll see what happens.

I'd be surprised if it was anything other than the NEDC test cycle:
