Not so fast: Jesse James' hydrogen speed "record" challenged
Jesse James' hydrogen ride - click above for high-res image gallery
Did Jesse James really pilot a hydrogen-fueled vehicle faster than anyone else ever has in history? Possibly. Did he set a world record as claimed in doing so? Not so fast (get it?), says noted world landspeed historian Louise Ann Noeth. It seems that Jesse's run wasn't quite up the the standards of a proper world record undertaking. Says Noeth:
The claim is without merit since the activities were conducted without benefit of any motorsports sanctioning authority. The vehicle was neither inspected, nor certified and all the timing personnel were on the James TV payroll. World speed records require two runs over a one-mile course within one hour. James was 5,148 feet short -- being timed one-way for a total of 132 feet; he made only three or four passes over an eight to ten-hour period. Any world record holder will tell you it's quite a technical feat to hold speed for a full mile.Ouch. When given the opportunity to explain the apparent discrepancies between his so-called record run and the actual official record-holding BMW HR2, Louise says "James responded with a short crude retort that reminded her that vulgarity is indeed the refuge of a destitute mind." In conclusion, she adds:
Mr. James efforts count for absolutely nothing on the world motorsports stage and amount to little more than a self-promoting "TV racer" PR stunt since he chose to ignore the sport's sanctioning rules that have applied to all records certified for the past 80 years.Click past the break for more from the official press release.

PRESS RELEASE:
TV's Jesse James Fraudulantly Claims Hydrogen-Powered World Speed Record, Says 'Landspeed Louise'
CREVE COEUR, MO - June 23, 2009: Noted automotive journalist and world landspeed historian Louise Ann Noeth has challenged television motorcycle guy Jesse James to a duel over his claim to have set a new world landspeed record.
According to a press release from Ms. Noeth and her company, Landspeed Productions, Jesse James claims he set the world record for hydrogen-powered vehicles on June 16th on the southern California El Mirage dry lake.
However, the press release states, "The claim is without merit since the activities were conducted without benefit of any motorsports sanctioning authority. The vehicle was neither inspected, nor certified and all the timing personnel were on the James TV payroll."
Louise Ann Noeth, known affectionately as LandSpeed Louise, is a veteran of several world landspeed record campaigns (some successful, some not). Her knowledge of the history, regulations and personalities involved in the efforts is nearly legendary.
"World speed records require two runs over a one-mile course within one hour. James was 5,148 feet short -- being timed one-way for a total of 132 feet; he made only three or four passes over an eight to ten-hour period. Any world record holder will tell you it's quite a technical feat to hold speed for a full mile," wrote Louise.
The baseless speed stunt was reportedly for the season-ending episode of James's TV show, Jesse James is a Dead Man. The episode is set to air in early August.
Louise adds, "James claims to have bested the FIA ratified BMW HR2 record of 185 mph. The BMW HR2 race car set 9 international and FIA-ratified land-speed records for hydrogen cars at the Miramas Proving Grounds in France. The BMW HR2 is one of the few hydrogen cars developed with internal combustion engine (ICE) technology instead of fuel cell technology. Mr. James efforts count for absolutely nothing on the world motorsports stage and amount to little more than a self-promoting "TV racer" PR stunt since he chose to ignore the sport's sanctioning rules that have applied to all records certified for the past 80 years."
Louise also reported that when contacted to explain the fraudulent claim, James responded with a short crude retort that reminded her that vulgarity is indeed the refuge of a destitute mind.

C'mon , we only speak of 750 h.p and approx 200 m.p.h. This is not really 'records ' for salt lakes runs. We will see 8 000+ h.p in the next weeks, so relax. They could work on the drivability too of hydrogen engines for reaching consumers in the future. Gasoline technology is bloked at 500 h.p actually for consumer cars because of drivability problems over 500 h.p. Only racers use more then 500 h.p because if you do it with gasoline you end-up with 10 technicians for the engine and millions for constructing them and each races it cost you one or more engines, LOL.
I say that toyota and gm and mercedes are dinausors technology headed to the bottom of the sink. Use your remaining gasoline cars and wait for the next generation green engines from inexisting folks unfortunattelly. Nobody is able to voice unlimited energy so that the real reason we have to drive costly polluting sh*t box named camry, corvette, focus, etc.

Just out of curiosity Gorr, how old are you?
I ask purely because whenever I read through the comments here I see a lot of sweeping generalisations and statements but little in the way of evidence or even an implication of experience or technical knowledge or background.
I don't post very often, and it's not because I don't know anything. It's either because I don't have anything constructive to add that isn't already said, or because most people here will never take anything they read in. They've already made up their mind, you're either EV OR H2, there can be no other option.
And what on earth are you talking about with a 500bhp limit?! Road cars don't have that much power because people don't NEED it, not because they couldn't handle it. Why would you need a 500bhp Camry? Would you really want someone driving around in a 500bhp+ Suburban?

What's this bullsh*t??? The SSC Aero, a street-legal sports car ($500,000 USD) that runs on GASOLINE, has nearly 1200 hp. And that's a V8.
You remind me of the young idiot I once knew who said a Lamborghini had to get the engine replaced every 5,000 miles. Check your facts before you spout, grasshopper.

Gorr,
stick to what you know....video games, and let the professionals handle cars, you know NOTHING of what you speak. While large breakthroughs in technology have brought us some interesting Novelties, they are just that, "Novelties" and where did you come up with a 500 h.p. limit on pump gas engines????? I have more than that in my 1970 Hemi Challenger and it's not anywhere near the limits of it's ability, even with the latest pump gas, and dynos document that, and I've drive several supercharged muscle cars with even more horsepower, So your spouting is nothing more than ignorance mixed with bad information and the lack of commom sense. Read more, learn more and then talk, lest you show everyone just how ignorant you really are.

Im doing a buying bid on a gazeous hydrogen ice car. Gasoline ice are limited to approx 500 h.p for normal consumer cars because of drivability problems. Let me destruct completelly normal and actual car engineers. They sell crap ice cars and the consumer is left undone. 500 h.p is very very low power as a choice for a mainstreem car , engineers from actual car manufacturers know that this is the natural limit of gasoline and if they want to offer more they will have durability problems and drivability problems. So let's quit this toxic old habit of driving 500 h.p costly and underpowered car at a high price, this is horrendous, paying big money as high as 40 000$ for a 500 h.p unstable mustang or even more money for a weighty viper or corvette, LOL. Me, im speaking of 8 000+ h.p for cheap without pollution or fuel cost . wake-up and don't disturb me with innadapted and destructive technology actually subsidized by u.s.a taxpayers. I said and i have written 8 000 h.p for cheap without drivability problems. This is my buying bid. This engine if you bought it can serve 24/24 because you can use it for your house electrical generators or your plane or ship, etc.
I said to actual car guy that they are knok-out, so wake-up. They are hypnotized by gasoline, LOL and there is 100 other methods to propel a car forward without problems. It's not because gas sold for a lot of money and that gm, toyota are dying that someone with his own brain like jesse james cannot put on the market 1 gazeous drivable cheap green car of 750 h.p or more but i prefer 8000 h.p.
gorr 9:28AM (6/30/2009)
When you do buying bids, you have to feel the actual ' players ' in the business. So i destructed actual car engineers and managers and revolted the consumers and taxpayers. Because of that gm is on bankrupcy, toyota and each and every car manufacturers is losing ton of money. But im not crazy, i know that some folks are real engine builder and i oriented them toward gazeous hydrogen, everything stay the same, if you like ice, then just experiment with hydrogen, the result is the same, a powerful engine. So im waiting for my plan to work. The easiest is one unit put on sale near where i live. Actual car manufacturers are trying like mad to steal this deal by investing corrupted taxmoney into this for them and they have accepted ton of money on the black market, as gift from the richs(banks, big-oil, speculators, senators, politicians, corporate manipulators, tax exemptions, ruling, etc) . Their corrupted trick is always to speak in quantity and time. They always say big number of sale and some silly promises about sowhere in time like 10 000 volts in 2010 or a plug-in prius in 2011, etc. Don't listen to this. Let's just buy for cash. Honda kill themself by asking big-oil and goverments to build a hydrogen infrastructure and this is not needed, so why they fucked their own customers by renting a unnessary fcx with a hydrogen tank that you cannot fill up for free. I said to them to put a hydrogen electrolizer into the fcx and they didn't even responded to me, so let them go down the sink like gm. If they don't want to offer a green car needed by consumers, then the logic say to buy somewhere else, that's all.
Just 1 car put on sale, a real green car for cheap can cease this internationnal crisis. It's just that we are serve by limp peoples that cannot stand having a personnality , so thier logic is that if i know the guy that started green technology he will become celeb and powerful and charismatic and nobody want to get kill like kennedy or martin luther king or gandi or jesus, so the less you do something the less chance you end-up been kill by a personnality searcher ( zombi ).

Damn straight! But, can it be done with so-called "Green Technology"? Yep, I am a motorhead, but I would like to build a high performance ELECTRIC Suburban that travels 300+ miles on a charge. Wouldn't that just fry the wires of those gas pots?

Well, if anybody can make a land speed claim with nothing but their own paid crew to "verify" it, then the record books would quickly be swamped with BS claims that couldn't be proven.
But why stop at land speed records? If you don't need no stinkin certification or follow any rules, then any record can be "broken" just by applying a lot of BS. We could have someone running a marathon in a minute, swimming across the pacific in 5 hours, and breaking the sound barrier on a bicycle.
Jesse is free to say he's gone over 199 in an H2 powered car, but he didn't follow the rules, it wasn't certified, it wasn't verified, so it doesn't count and won't be in the official record books.
bob 5:43AM (6/28/2009)
The thing is, the other people went that speed for a mile as measured by impartial judges.
JJ went that speed for less than 200 feet, as measured by people he was paying.
How is it so hard for you to understand that the people who legitimately (as measured by crews of people they were not paying) went their record speed and held that record speed for a mile, which is the required duration to count as an official record, should not have their official record taken away by a fraudster.
Yes, JJ is amazing athelete. But he also knew his claim to have beaten the world record was total bullshit.
If you are in the olympics in the four mile and you run the 100 faster than any other four mile record holder and then walk the rest you dont get a world record.
Pardon my lack of eloquence, but DUH !
Nice work cussing out an old lady who is a respected expert too.
Classy.

Without the proper controls in place anyone can claim anything and it don't mean a dam thing..... I just went 400 mph on water....but I cant prove it or substantiate my claim. But by some of you morons that's ok because I did it for a tv camera. Why are records so hard to break? because you have to do it correctly not fly by night b/s.
Rod 8:50PM (6/27/2009)
J James is a self promoting, eh, eh, huuk, huuk, like wow, dude man uh. Those of you who have seen one of his shows know what I am addressing on the first line. I am sometime fascinated at these no talents that appear on television for whatever reason?? Perusing his silly TV show we saw them portraying him as some kind of great guy delivering medicine to the Alaskan natives during some silly, supposed record- breaking attempt at taking a motorcycle across the ice.
Jesse, Producers, they fly the medicine in. I worked in the Indian Health Service, and while never worked in Alaska, worked with many who did. Such a sham.
JJ needs to go back to pounding out gasoline tanks out of sheet metal and leave it at that. Seems that's one thing he's actually pretty good at.

To me a primary problem with an all-electric vehicle is limited range. At the moment 90 miles is promoted, but owners are saying they are likely to get more like 60. To be on the safe side, say a round trip of no more than 25 miles away. 300+ miles in a vehicle as heavy as a Suburban. Deam on. Without a break-through in battery technology all electric vehicles will be little more than ticked-out golf carts.
And that means you still need a conventionally power vehicle to go anywhere out of the local area. Today how many families with two vehicles strictly need one for local use and one for distance use?
