Remember the Mindset E-Motion? When last we had news of this Murat Günak creation, the folks behind it (Spirt Avert AG, now known as Mindset Holding AG) were seeking 152 million development dollars at a time when many of the world's major economies were sitting on their posteriors, looking up at the cliff from which they'd fallen. Well, the effort survived that turmoil and recently re-emerged boasting a battery tech that claims an energy density that's twice that used in other electric vehicles.

Developed by inventor Jörg Hempel and commercialized under the name H-Tech, the technology uses conventional lithium ion cells that have been pre-conditioned and charged using a newly developed method. The 52-kWh pack currently being tested in the Mindset prototype is said to weigh only 200 kg (440.9 lbs) while extending the vehicle's range by 75 percent. By way of comparison, the pack in the Tesla Roadster is 56 kWhs and weighs 441.9 kg (990 lbs). As you can see, that's an extraordinary improvement.

As Carl Sagan was wont to say, however, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" and so it's in this spirit we await more news of the company's testing, as well as independent verification. So far, the pack has undergone an assessment on the road, but will be evaluated further in the lab for "consistency over multiple charge/discharge cycles."

According to the company's website, production of all-electric and range-extended versions had been planned for early 2012. That timeline appears somewhat optimistic in light of the Mindset's current stage of development and the fact that Xenatech, its strategic manufacturing partner, recently declared bankruptcy. Hit the jump to read the official press release for yourself.
Continue reading Mindset E-Motion re-emerges with doubly-dense battery claim

Mindset E-Motion re-emerges with doubly-dense battery claim originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 13:56:00 EST.
If you've been closely following the story of the soon-to-be-revealed Tesla Model X, you are likely aware that the all-electric crossover is said to be quicker than a Porsche 911, offer more interior space than an Audi Q7 and come with all-wheel drive (at least as an option). Also, if the teaser image is any indication, it should be pretty damn sexy.

What you might not know is that the feature likely to garner the most initial attention are its unique doors. Specifically, "falcon" doors. While we suspect front passengers will gain entrance to the vehicle in the traditional way, the rear portals will be decidedly different. CEO Elon Musk intimated as much when he recently tweeted, "The most interesting view of the Model X is really with the doors open."

So, what are falcon doors? Having seen photos of the Model X, Theo O'Neill of Wunderlich Securities explains that they "lift up and fold - like the wing of a bird," pivoting from the top. Apparently, this will help the Model X achieve its "functionality of a minivan" mandate, allowing easy access to attend to child car seats and such.

Though we can really only begin to decide whether this configuration is a stroke of genius or too clever by half after the official reveal on February 9 at 8:00PM, we suspect some of you might already be forming opinions. Feel free to share with the rest of the class in the comments.
Tesla Model X to have ...
Are you a U.S. automaker? Do you want a billion dollars? Have we got a deal for you! Just build 60,000 cars that get 100 miles per gallon and the government will send a truckload of cash to your office doors (or, perhaps, mail a check).

H.R. 3872 - the Excellence in Energy Efficiency Act of 2012 - was just introduced by Representative Dan Lungren (R) of California's 3rd Congressional District. If passed, the legislation would have the Secretary of Energy "establish a program to award a prize in the amount of $1,000,000,000 to the first automobile manufacturer incorporated in the United States to manufacture and sell in the United States 60,000 mid-sized sedan automobiles which operate on gasoline and can travel 100 miles per gallon."

That's right, no cheating with subcompacts toys or fancy all-electrics, it's for adult-sized gasoline burners only, baby! It's unclear whether plug-in hybrids such as the Chevy Volt or upcoming Ford Fusion Energi might be eligible, but we doubt it since OpenCongress says the subtitle is "To provide a prize to the first manufacturer of highly-efficient mid-sized automobiles powered by gasoline" and the Volt already comes in at 93 MPGe.

While established automakers couldn't be lured in by the measly $1 million offered by the Progressive X-Prize, we're sure they'd be more than happy to accept a check with the big B on it. The question this proposed law begs, though, is would they make an extra effort to achieve this sort of sky-high efficiency goal under other circumstances?
Excellence in Energy Efficiency Act promises $1 billion prize for 100 MPG car originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 20:00:00 EST.
It's been a couple years since we first saw the Boulder Electric Vehicle prototype in action but now comes word that the company has delivered its very first production vehicle. The initial DV-500 (as it is affectionately called) has been sold to Denver-area Precision Plumbing,Heating & Cooling who have made a commitment to buy 20 of the all-electrics at a very reasonable-sounding $70,000 apiece.

In addition to obvious changes in appearance, its performance also differs slightly from the original. The production version boasts an 80-kWh battery pack made up of China-sourced lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells that weigh in at 1,300 lbs and are said to be good for 120 miles of range. Power comes from an 80-kW AC motor that gives the 7,000-lb truck a 70 mile-per-hour top speed. Charging can take up to eight hours.

Precision Plumbing's Tom Robichaud says that despite the higher up-front costs, he expects to save $6,000 to $8,000 per vehicle per year in lower operating costs and anticipates the trucks to be good for 300,000 miles. Currently, he says, the Sprinter vans he uses now are replaced after 100,000 miles. In anticipation of the electric fleet, the company has also installed a solar array at its facilities.

Boulder Electric Vehicle reportedly has five production lines set up and is busy building the vehicles for Precision and other customers. The company also has plans for a bigger truck that doubles the 500 cubic foot capacity of the DV-500. Hit the jump for a couple clips featuring Mr. Robichaud and his new promotionally wrapped plumbing van.
Continue reading Boulder Electric Vehicle delivers first truck to Precision Plumbing [w/video]

Boulder Electric Vehicle delivers first truck to Precision Plumbing [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 10:06:00 EST.
Today's early-adopter owners of plug-in vehicles are known to have a tendency to geek out on data related to their low-carbon rides and now there's a new app that helps them get even geekier. And share the results. GreenCharge by Xatori - the same folks behind the popular PlugShare app - syncs up with your Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt and spits out info about everything from battery state-of-charge to how much money you are saving by driving on electrons.

Available now for the Apple iPhone, iPad and, iPod Touch for $9.99 (calm down, Google fans, an Android version is coming soon), the app offers functions and functionality automakers don't quite get right. For instance, the infamous Leaf state-of-charge reading. The car expresses how much energy is in your battery in miles remaining, which changes constantly depending on a wide variety of factors. You can find the preferred percentage reading on the Leaf app but you have to pull out your phone, open the app and wait for it to pull the information from the vehicle. GreenCharge collects this data every five minutes and displays it on your gadget's desktop, saving you the frustrating wait. Nice, eh?

Another touted feature is the savings calculator. Drawing from prices in your area, it tells you how much money you're saving by driving electric and keeps a record so you can look at the numbers broken down in daily, weekly or monthly increments. You can then share your savings with friends via Facebook, Twitter or email and perhaps encourage them to consider the benefits of going gas-free.
You can find the download link to the Apple's iStore at the GreenCharge website.
While there were concerns that the Nissan Leaf might not be a very good vehicle for colder climates, the automaker is ready to demonstrate otherwise. It recently invited a few dozen journalists to have a go in the snow with its signature all-electric on a test course in Shibetsu, Hokkaido in the north of Japan. Informative video ensued.

With a backdrop of a brace of Leafs frolicking about in the white stuff, interviews were conducted with both engineers and journalists and, from them, we learn some interesting tidbits. For instance, the Leaf battery pack can maintain an operating temperature nicely above freezing despite a chilly -9 C (15.8 F) reading outside. Also, Nissan is working on a new, more efficient, heating system for the passenger cabin, which is good since trying to keep the occupants warm has, perhaps, the biggest impact on decreasing winter driving range.

The cavorting journalists seemed impressed and even surprised with the Leaf's driving dynamics in the slippery conditions. With a low center of gravity, even weight distribution and traction control, the car displayed a comfortable amount of well-mannered poise. Of course, we wouldn't dream of pointing out the pylon that gets punched at precisely 18 seconds into the first video, since that speaks as much to the driver's ability as it does to the vehicle's handling.

Anyhoo, without further ado, hit the jump for a very snowy EV encounter. Besides the main video, which gives an overall rundown of the event, we've also included four more clips featuring further footage of the interviews with company officials and participants. Enjoy.
Continue reading Watch a brace of Nissan Leaf EVs frolic in the snow

Watch a brace of Nissan Leaf EVs frolic in the snow originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 29 Jan 2012 17:14:00 EST.
Perhaps the biggest reveal of 2012 for fans of luxury performance all-electric vehicles (or, perhaps, anyone automotively inclined with a pulse) is set for the 9th of February when Tesla Motors pulls the shroud from its Model X crossover at its new Los Angeles design studio. And now, we have been given a strong hint of what to expect.

The upstart California startup has just sent out a new version of its invitation to customers, and included on the summons is a partially-silhouetted image of something seemingly very sleek and very sexy. Indeed, it must be the Model X. While there is some of the same design language used in the Model S sedan, the teaser suggests a vehicle with a shorter hood, a taller roof and less-pronounced creases in its sheet metal.

While we'll have a presence at the event, you can witness the unveiling in real time from the comfort of your own home. CEO Elon Musk has tweeted that the reveal will be shown live on the Tesla Motors website at 8:00 pm (we presume that's Pacific Standard Time). He also adds, "Most cars are pretty blah. This is not."

After seeing the image above and adding the "Quicker than a Porsche 911 and roomier than an Audi Q7" statement we've heard previously to the equation, we're going to give him the benefit of the doubt. For now.
Tesla Model X crossover teased, full reveal to be live on Internet originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 28 Jan 2012 15:31:00 EST.
Brutus two, eh? We thought the original Brutus electric cruiser was a beautiful beast and fully expected the lithium-powered follow-up to be decidedly better than the lead-acid battery beta. We didn't, however, expect this. With acceleration that will surprise you like a backstab, this new build puts the bike squarely in the sports cruiser category and transforms its look from custom classic to contemporary killer.

While much of the bike has stayed they same - the exposed truss frame, the nouveau-retro fenders, the DC motor paired to a 5-speed transmission - there are a number of electrical, mechanical and cosmetic changes. Click through the gallery and your eye is quickly drawn to the chrome louvered primary chain-set cover on the port side where previously a belt setup had been employed. More subtle, but more intriguing, is the glass tube on the starboard that harbors the Hairball interface for the liquid-cooled Zilla controller. The front end also gets a new bit of sexy as the once-naked head lamp is now adorned with a bikini fairing.

Then there's the performance. Brutal. Chris Bell, the man behind the machine, hasn't fully turned up the wick in the limited testing he's performed so far, but he easily pulled down a 4.7-second 0-60 time. Considering this beast weighs well over 500 pounds, that's impressive. And, we only expect that quickness to increase as the prototype moves closer to production, losing weight and gaining power along the way. Top speed hasn't yet been reached, but Bell is confident it will easily ring past 100 miles per hour, having already come within a cat's whisker of that mark. While the all-important range figure is predicted to be 100 miles, the proof of that pudding also remains untasted.

Equally important as the going is the stopping and Brutus 2.0 is no slouch in this area either. The twin rotors up front each sport a 6-piston caliper, while the rear ring wears a pair of clamps that are individually controlled - one by a handlebar-mounted lever and the other by the traditional foot pedal. Feathering the rear lever into the turns is said to approximate the engine-braking feel that some might miss from their internal combustion rides.

On the commercialization front, there are a couple deals in the offing that could see Brutus in production with 50-state homologation by the end of the year. As we alluded to earlier, the bike is still a work-in-progress and so the machine that emerges from the development process will be simultaneously more refined and beastlier. We can't wait.

Attendees of the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon might have been forgiven for thinking that a certain Toyota Prius on display was under attack from a giant marshmallow from outer space. In fact, the only assault taking place was one on their visual senses, as that large mallow-looking mass integrated into the top and hindquarters of the hybrid was actually purposely added to create a new camping vehicle from Camp-Inn Japan.
The reconfigured vehicle keeps the mechanicals intact and stretches the bodywork out to 4980mm (16.34 feet) from stem to stern. The enlarged interior comes equipped with sleeping mats as well as a small removable table.

The configuration sleeps four - five, if they are previously well-acquainted - and will reportedly sell for ¥4,000,000 ($52,016 U.S. at today's rates). Besides offering shelter for those occasional wilderness excursions, the Relax Cabin should also make finding your vehicle in the shopping mall parking lot a whole lot easier.
Umm, what?
Last year, Drayson Racing and Lola announced they would partner on an all-electric race car and now, at the 6th MIA International Low Carbon Racing Conference, the very impressive result of their collaboration has been revealed. The Lola-Drayson B12/69EV is an 850-horsepower (640-kW) monster that will seek to destroy many an electric vehicle speed record this year, while simultaneously serving as a development platform for a different design Drayson Racing will bring to the 2013 FIA Forumula E series.

If, however, a racing series is announced that will accept the Lemans-style prototype as is, they might very well campaign it. It should be interesting to see then, if the just-announced ALMS-IMSA-Quimera initiative might be a viable option for them. With projected acceleration numbers of 0-to-60 miles per hour in 3 seconds, 0-to-100 mph in 5.1 seconds, and a top speed somewhere north of 200 mph, it should be pretty competitive.

The B12/69EV gets all that motive power from four YASA-750 axial flux motors running on a 700-volt system. The 60-kWh battery setup that provides the asphalt-sizzling energy consists of three separate packs of A123 cells - cylindrical ANR26650M1-B's sourced through Mavizen, to be exact - that are structurally integrated into the Lola carbon fiber chassis. Charging is also appropriately high tech, using an inductive system from Qualcomm Halo.

Besides an incredible amount of power and torque, the racer weighs in at about 1000 kg (2205 lbs), which is within 100 kg of a typical internal combustion LMP1, so handling should be pretty similar. Of course, the proof of the racecar pudding is in the driving and we look forward to seeing this machine in action once video is dished out.
Drayson Racing presents 850 hp electric racer at Low Carbon Racing Conference originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 18:06:00 EST.
Autolib, the Parisian electric car sharing service, is not having the kind of start it had hoped for. Though the program officially kicked off in October, the rubber really hit the road in December and, since that time, 30 to 40 of the 250 Bolloré-built Bluecars in the fleet have had to be taken out of service. The problem stems from a combination of vandalism - something the city's bicycle-sharing program also experiences a lot of - and ordinary breakdowns of one sort or another.

The situation means that grabbing a car from one of the 300 stations is not a sure bet. The graphic to the right is a snapshot of availability taken recently, with the number of available electrics shown in the blue flag. As you can see, there are an awful lot of zeros.

The news is not all bad though. The service has had 6,000 people sign up, which is about double what organizers expected. Now, if they can get some more cars out there and keep them running, they might just experience some of the success car-sharing programs like Car2go and Zipcar are enjoying Stateside.

When Tesla Motors revealed its pricing and specifications for its 2012 Model S, we couldn't help but notice an interesting peculiarity. The 0-to-60 times and top speeds varied according to pack size and, not only that, the variants with the larger, and presumably heavier, batteries were both quicker and faster. More oddness? The 40-kWh pack won't be able to take advantage of Tesla's yet-to-be-unveiled high-speed Supercharger network.

So, what gives? Well, it all seems to boil down to the batteries. Lithium ion batteries today suffer something of a tradeoff with energy capacity versus power - the ability to discharge (and recharge) that energy quickly. You can get cells that can either hold a large amount of energy but offer low discharge rates or you can get cells that hold lower amounts of energy but can discharge that energy quickly. Tesla uses the former type and that is how they are able to squeeze as much as 85 kWh worth of energy onto the Model S chassis.

However, the number of these cells tends to dictate performance. As Tesla tells us, "More cells, more power, quicker acceleration." While the larger 60- and 80-kWh packs have enough cells inside to collectively provide enough power to get the performance sedan up to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds, the 40-kWh pack comes up a bit short. Its 6.5 second time doesn't make it a slouch by any means but stepping up to the bigger batteries has its benefits.

Besides stop-light quickness, another advantage the larger packs offer is charging quickness. The 40 kWh Model S won't have an interface for Tesla's 90kW-Supercharger stations. While we might speculate that the reason for this decision is in part due to battery chemistry, the company will only say:

Tesla offers different battery options for different types of drivers. Roadster owners, who have logged over 18 million real-world miles, have taught us that drivers have a variety of driving habits and needs. The three battery options are designed to give future Model S owners maximum choice to match their preferences.

The shortcomings might not affect most Tesla S owners. According to an informal poll of buyers at Tesla Motors Club, more than 50 per cent plan on going whole hog with 85 kWhs while less than 16 per cent are settling for the least expensive option.
Why bigger battery options give Tesla Model S better performance originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 19:56:00 EST.
Think of it as Better Place lite. The Taiwan government and utility companies have plans to help build 60 battery swapping stations for electric motorcycles - and by "electric motorcycles," they mean either electric scooters and/or electric motorcycles - and make 600 of the two-wheelers available to use for free. (Yes, free!) Of course, to take advantage of the situation, one would have to live in either New Taipei City on the north end of the island-country or in Kaohsiung City in the south, as each of those lucky cities will be getting 30 stations apiece. The program should spread to other cities in the future.

The initiative is meant to provide infrastructural support for 5,000 bikes and is being supported by funding from Taiwan's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) who created the Electric Motorcycle Battery Swapping System Subsidy Regulations (known locally as 電動機車電池交換系統補助辦法) last summer. Meant to make battery swapping as easy as filling up with gasoline and reduce maintenance worries, the program makes a maximum of NT$1.5 million ($49,430 at today's rates) available for each station installation.

While the hope is that the program will accelerate the change from internal combustion bikes to electric ones and reduce pollution, the task ahead certainly looms large. Taiwan has over 14 million registered machines on its busy streets.
Taiwan plans battery swapping stations and free-use electric motorcycles originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 17:40:00 EST.
Remember that time back in October when we told you that the all-electric crossover from Tesla, the Model X, would be revealed ahead of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show? Well, scratch that. That information was, apparently, inaccurate. Dubitable. Counterfactual even. Instead, it seems that February 9th marks the day the X is to be spotted.

The news comes courtesy of the <strike>nerds</strike> enthusiasts over at the Tesla Motor Club forum. A member read in a recent copy of Barclays Capital research report that the Tesla's design studio in LA would be the setting for the Model X reveal. We contacted Tesla to confirm, and were told that, "Yes, there will be a February 9th Model X event."

The upcoming reveal won't have been its first, however. The vehicle was shown to some institutional investor types just before Christmas and, going by a handful of tweets that went out across the internetz shortly thereafter, they were impressed. Quicker than a Porsche 911 and roomier than an Audi Q7, they say. Throw in all-wheel drive and this could get pretty interesting.
Tesla Model X all-electric crossover is very quick, very roomy and will be revealed Feb 9 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 09:52:00 EST.
Looking for all the world like an elongated Mitsubishi i MiEV that a Stormtrooper would drive, the SIM-LEI recently made an appearance at the 2011 Electric Vehicle Industrial Exhibition in Tokyo. It's been a while since we first caught wind of the SIM-LEI and we've been curious to get a better look at this super-efficient prototype ever since. And now we have.

Developed by Hiroshi Shimizu - the man behind the amazing eight-wheeled Eliica vehicles - the SIM-LEI produces a combination of numbers that puts other all-electrics to shame. Numbers like 0-to-60 in 4.8 seconds and 77 Wh/km (123.9 watt-hours per mile). More numbers? How about 305 km (189.5 miles) at 100 km/h (62 mph) with a 24.5 kWh battery. Eat your heart out Nissan Leaf.

If SIM-Drive, Shimizu-san's company, sees its vision realized there is another number we'd like to see associated with the retail version of this vehicle; $24,900. That's the price they calculate they could sell it for in volumes of 100,000 units. Perhaps that's a long shot, but hey, you've got to have goals.

But enough of numbers. Hit the jump for excellent video that explores the SIM-LEI inside and out (check out that 19-inch display!) and let us know where you stand on efficiency and performance versus Clone armor.
Continue reading The Sim-Lei is an EV approved for use on the Death Star

The Sim-Lei is an EV approved for use on the Death Star originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 10:00:00 EST.
Good news for high-amperage types who want to run their battery-powered race machines at a local drag track. Working with the National Electric Drag Racing Association (NEDRA), the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) has adopted rules for electric vehicles, giving track officials guidelines for pre-race inspections and allowing drivers to compete and set records on its tracks.

Since the National Hotrod Association (NHRA) - the other large drag-race sanctioning body - did this a few years ago, pretty much any track in the U.S. and Canada can now officially accommodate electric vehicles. It should be pointed out, though, that NEDRA remains the only organization that actually registers and keeps track of electric vehicle records.

One group said to benefit from the IHRA changes is the Delta Secondary School (DSS) automotive program, which races at an IHRA-associated track in its converted 1989 Toyota Tacoma (pictured above). Hit the jump for the official press release as well as bonus video of the DSS taking on a dino-juice-powered Dodge.
Continue reading IHRA officially recognizes electric vehicles, adopts drag racing rules

IHRA officially recognizes electric vehicles, adopts drag racing rules originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 07:54:00 EST.
The trial of Nissan's NV200 EV prototype by Japan Post last summer must have had some amount of success as the all-electric van is now poised to take on the streets of London, England. This time around, it will be rocking the colors of the courier FedEx as it begins a two-month stint of package schlepping.

Performance specs for the prototype have not been released, but since it does use the same 80-kW motor and 24-kWh battery drivetrain as the Nissan Leaf, it likely puts up slightly lower acceleration and range numbers than the consumer hatchback. FedEx Express already has a few EVs operating in London - its world-wide electric fleet now totals 48 vehicles - and so it should be able to take advantage of quick-charging opportunities through the day as needed.

Nissan will continue these trials in other locations in 2012 including, we presume, the United States. Likewise, we imagine the company will eventually offer an electric version for sale, though if they do, we hope they can bump the energy storage up to, say, 35 kWh and thereby increase its utility as a commercial vehicle. Official press release awaits after the break.
Continue reading FedEX to trial the Nissan NV200 EV prototype in London

FedEX to trial the Nissan NV200 EV prototype in London originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 18 Dec 2011 16:59:00 EST.
The Juicer 48 is custom-built motorized bicycle that reaches back 100 years for its form, while leaning forward for its function. Calling on his background in design, its creator Dave Twomey combined his love for electric propulsion and vintage machinery to create a retro ride whose main focal point is a pair of battery banks that recall the look of a V-twin engine.

Twomey started the project by recycling a bicycle frame and having the down tube stretched into a loop to accommodate the Manta DC motor and his Headway lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4) battery packs. He then attached a self-fabricated set of springer forks up front and gave it a nice set of Felt "Thick Brick" hoops to help set off the cruiser look.

While most of the propulsive bits are left exposed, the tank up top houses a 400-amp controller as well as a BMS (battery management system). As shown in the gallery photos, the front is now adorned with a 113dB horn to <strike>scare the hell out of</strike> alert texting drivers or anyone that might step out in its path. Twomey thought this a prudent precaution since it's pretty quick and can hit speeds of 46 miles per hour. At a more reasonable 20 mph, the 16 LiFePo4 cells hold enough energy to carry the 110-lb bike and rider about 13 miles.

The Juicer 48 may still get a few finishing touches, but early feedback favorable to its current state may keep it from receiving its planned paint job.
The greatest threat to America's automotive industry of all time has been hiding in plain sight. For years we've been watching Coda and its signature Sedan as it grew from an announcement by Miles Automotive in 2006 into its own stand-alone brand. The company has made breakthroughs and suffered setbacks, but now seems poised to actually launch a vehicle that, while it may not be able to compete stylistically with competitors like the Ford Focus Electric, will at least offer decent performance and more range for a similar price. What we didn't realize however, is that it also is the thin edge of communistic sword from China poised to separate America's capitalistic head from its democratic body.

At least, that's the way two columnists for the LA Times seem to feel about it, and who are we to argue with them? In an opinion piece penned by the duo of Greg Autry and Peter Navarro, it is explained to our oblivious selves that, although Coda is selling itself as an American company with an environmentally friendly product, it is, in reality, a tool of communism with a "Trojan horse electric car designed to carry the Chinese military-industrial complex deep into America's auto market." Yes, we're as shocked as you.
Continue reading Is the Coda Sedan a Trojan horse sent by communist China to destroy America?

Is the Coda Sedan a Trojan horse sent by communist China to destroy America? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 11:47:00 EST. Suzuki has been testing its e-Let's electric scooter around its hometown of Hamamatsu for the past year and is now ready to send it out into the real world. Or, at least, the Japanese portion of the real world. While it doesn't have the kind of range that would prompt you to pen a letter home - 30kms (18.6 miles) at 30 km/h (18.6 miles per hour) - it does feature some pretty nice packaging and looks like a practical machine for commuting and errand running.

It's interesting to note is that Suzuki's first electric two-wheeler for consumers not only gets its Sanyo batteries supplied by Panasonic Group, but also its in-wheel motor, controller and charger that the two companies collaborated in developing. The battery has a built in management system, is stored under the seat and easily removable. The charger has the same form as the battery and can be brought along as well.

When the Suzuki e-Let's goes on sale on the 9th of January, the price tag will read ¥312,900 ($4,029 at today's rates) though if you want to get an extra battery, the "W" package will cost ¥396,900 ($5,110). Hit the jump for video of the e-Let's in action as well as press releases from both Panasonic and Suzuki.
Continue reading Suzuki e-Let's electric scooter coming to Japan, Panasonic supplies drivetrain

Suzuki e-Let's electric scooter coming to Japan, Panasonic supplies drivetrain originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 14:01:00 EST.
