The diesel era at Le Mans may not be over yet, but already we're seeing the emergence of a new propulsion trend: hybrids. Toyota recently announced the TS030 Hybrid LMP1, Peugeot was working on a hybrid version of its 908 prototype before it killed the race program, and now Audi has confirmed a hybrid version of the R18 TDI.

Few details were released, but what we can tell you is that Audi will field four cars at Le Mans this year: two with hybrid assist and two without. One will be headlined by Allan McNish, one by Oliver Jarvis, one by Timo Bernhard and one by André Lotterer, with supplemental drivers to be announced sometime before the 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans kicks off in June.

Audi also announced a two-car entry for the inaugural FIA World Endurance Championship, with four cars to be run at select racers like Spa and Sebring. Expect more details on the R18 hybrid to be released later this month, but in the meantime you can check out the official announcement after the jump.
Continue reading Audi confirms R18 hybrid as part of 2012 endurance racing program

Audi confirms R18 hybrid as part of 2012 endurance racing program originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 05 Feb 2012 08:33:00 EST.
After dominating Le Mans-class endurance sportscar racing for years now, Audi is left with little to prove. Plus, with sister-company Porsche returning with an LMP1 program of its own, and Bentley reportedly considering the same, rumors have been circulating that the four-ringed automaker could quit while it's ahead. It's something that rivals old (like Peugeot) and new (like Toyota) were undoubtedly rooting for, but no such luck: Audi isn't going anywhere but the finish line.

The German automaker's racing division - which is, incidentally, undergoing a thorough shake-up in preparation for new opposition - has brought its new R18 prototype to these United States for testing at Sebring, saying little more than that it's preparing to challenge the new FIA World Endurance Championship in the new year. But take a close look at the photos the company released along with the statement after the jump and the keenest of eyes may notice that the new R18 has undergone what looks like some significant changes.

Of course, all we can see from the outside is the aero package, but sources suggest there's something more lurking under the skin. The Audi fanatics over at QuattroWorld insist this latest prototype is packing a hybrid powertrain, putting it up against Peugeot's 908 Hybrid4 and Toyota's upcoming hybrid challenger. If that's the case, we can pretty much guarantee that whoever's car will cross the finish line in the upcoming season of endurance racing will be doing so with a bit of battery boost, too.
Continue reading Audi testing revised R18 at Sebring with possible hybrid power

Audi testing revised R18 at Sebring with possible hybrid power originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 09:54:00 EST.
Audi may claim that it's "not against hybrids," but it's certainly not hugely in favor of them, either. Any potential buyer of a hybrid version of the A6 or the A8, for example, had better get ready to wait a bit, because Audi wants to "minimize lineup complexity." So much for all this. The upcoming new A6 diesel is also getting a delay to early 2013.

Despite some forays into vehicle electrification, Audi is going to depend on its diesel focus in 2012. This means oil-burning versions of the Q5 and the A8 are still coming next year, and there's a chance we'll see a diesel A7, too. A diesel A6 had once been talked about for 2012, but Ward's Auto says this model will likely be moved back. The exact reasons for all these delays was not given, unless you think "minimizing lineup complexity" is a coherent statement.
Audi delaying A6 hybrid and diesel models, A8 hybrid originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 19 Nov 2011 08:37:00 EST.
For most of its early life, the Audi e-tron family was born and bred for the auto show circuit, and it did quite well there. To really make an impact, though, the cars need to get out, and some e-trons have been making forays onto public streets recently. A fleet of 20 A1 e-trons is about to scoot around the streets of Munich in a program that was announced a year ago.

The purpose, as with so many of the plug-in vehicle test fleets run by major automakers, is to gather data on how people use these new powertrains. In Munich, Audi's data-collecting partner is the Technische Universität München, with E.ON and the public utility Stadtwerke München responsible for the local charging infrastructure. Befitting a high-profile program like this, at least some of the energy used to power the A1 plug-in hybrids will be generated from renewable sources.

Since the A1 e-tron can be powered by both gasoline and electricity, it's clear that some of the Munich miles will not be renewably sourced. The little A1 e-tron can go up to 31 miles on electric power, enough to get most urban residents around their city each day without emitting any local emissions. When the lithium-ion battery runs out, a "compact combustion engine" kicks in. Today's press release doesn't detail what kind of combustion engine that is, but the concept version of the A1 e-tron used a Wankel rotary engine. The gas-electric combination gives the A1 e-tron a fuel economy rating of 124 mpge (using the "proposed standard for determining the fuel efficiency of vehicles with range extenders," Audi says). Wish you could drive the A1 e-tron in your town? Franciscus van Meel, head of electric mobility strategy for Audi, said in a statement that the automaker is, "planning additional fleet endeavors in strategically important markets."
Continue reading Audi revs up 20 A1 e-trons for Munich test fleet

Audi revs up 20 A1 e-trons for Munich test fleet originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 11:09:00 EST.
Don't say we never gave you anything beautiful. For example, how about a video of the 2014 Audi e-tron Spyder whizzing down the sun-drenched streets of Malibu, CA. The two-minute clip doesn't reveal anything new, performance-wise, but watching this truly modern machine, with its crisp lines, carbon composite exterior and drop-dead gorgeous styling, is a treat for the eyes.

The two-seat Audi e-tron Spyder is equipped with a 296-horsepower twin-turbo V6 TDI engine at the rear axle and twin electric motors cranking out a total of 89 hp up front. The e-tron Spyder's relatively low curb weight (3,196 pounds), combined with its high-torque TDI mill and twin electric motors, results in respectable performance. The Spyder scoots from zero to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and continues on to a limited top speed of 155 mph.
As much fun as it was to ride in the all-electric e-tron back in 2010, getting a chance to drive the updated topless coupe was something our lucky companions at Autoblog could not pass up. We wanted to let ABG readers know where to find it without stealing any of the original's thunder, so just click here to read the complete Quick Spin article.
How many plug ports does the electric vehicle industry need? One more, apparently. German automakers Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen - in conjunction with General Motors and Ford - will unveil the Combined Charging System at the 15th International VDI-Congress and Exhibition in Germany today.

The Combined Charging System is a universal setup that makes compatible a single port with all existing charging methods: single-phase AC, three-phase AC, residential DC or DC quick-charge at public stations. This all-levels ability is what sets the Combined Charging System apart from the SAE J1772 connector or even the increasingly common DC quick-charge CHAdeMO protocol.

This universal interface will supposedly reduce the complexity for development and deployment of electric vehicles. As usual, the Combined Charging System integrates communication, charging and safety features into a single connector. Daimler states that the Combined Charging System will be ready for deployment in mid-2012. SAE International is also working on a multi-level coupler (pictured), which should be finalized during the first quarter of 2012.
Continue reading Automakers working on universal electric vehicle port for all charging levels

Automakers working on universal electric vehicle port for all charging levels originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 12 Oct 2011 12:58:00 EST.
Oil-sippers failed to make even the slightest of dents in the U.S.' hybrid-heavy green vehicle scene.

Through the end of September 2011, sales of diesel passenger vehicles in the U.S. were up 30.9 percent, compared to the same nine-month period in 2010. However, at only 7,663 total units sold last month - a decline of 13 percent compared to August's numbers - the diesel's take-rate rings in at a mere 0.73 percent, compared to hybrid vehicles at 1.68 percent and plug-ins at 0.17 percent.

Led by the Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Golf TDI, diesel vehicles have slowly inched their way up the sales charts. No U.S. automaker sold even a single diesel passenger vehicle in September of 2011.

Sales of the segment leader, the Jetta TDI, checked in at 4,158 units in September, bringing the diesel sedan's year-to-date total to 41,083. The oil-burning Golf didn't fare nearly as well, but its sales of 694 units in September landed the diesel hatchback in second place. In third, with 610 sales, was the diesel-fueled BMW X5 xDrive35d. And coming in fourth, with 449 units sold, was the spectacular BMW 335d.

Not as easily spotted as its Spyder relative, the Audi Urban Concept Sportback more closely maches the renderings we saw before the start of the Frankfurt Motor Show. That's not to say that we were totally prepared for the quirkiness of either version, but at least the Sportback's carbon fiber reinforced plastic body was somewhat known to us.

Under the CFRP, the Sportback and Spyder share the same all-electric powertrain. That means two electric motors with a combined output of 15 kW (20 PS) of continuous power and 47 Nm (34.67 lb-ft) of torque as well as a li-ion battery that has 7.1 kWh of usable energy (total size unknown) and offers a range of 45 miles. Getting from zero to 62 mph (the concept's top speed) takes a gentle 16.9 seconds, which would be fine if Audi ever releases this vehicle for sale in its intended environment: the city. Perhaps even more appropriate for a city getabout, the battery pack can recharge in just an hour from a standard (in Europe) 230-volt household current. If you have access to a 400-volt, three-phase current fast charger, that drops to approximately 20 minutes. Both concept vehicles are also ready with Audi Wireless Charging (AWC) technology, which uses contactless induction from a 3.6 kW primary coil installed into a parking spot, say, to automatically start refilling the battery pack when you pull the car into place. Audi didn't say how long this wireless charging takes, just that it "is comparable to that of other charging technologies."
When Audi unveiled the original e-tron Concept at the last Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, a production version seemed to be nothing more than a glimmer in the very distant future. Two years later, it appears that the automaker has made plenty of progress in bringing an electric-powered R8 into the world.

Yesterday in Frankfurt, Audi revealed a new R8 e-tron "technology demonstrator" that represents something fairly similar to the production model we'll see in the near future. Some unique visual features separate the R8 e-tron from the petrol-powered version, including the carbon fiber vents on the hood and chrome slats in the front grilles and rear bumper. Like the concept, the production version of the car is expected to feature four electric motors sending power to each wheel, with performance targets including 0-60 mph in less than five seconds and a 150 mile range.

You can see the new Audi R8 e-tron prototype in detail in the high-res gallery above.
Audi shows off near-production R8 e-tron prototype originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 09:28:00 EST.
The Audi Urban Concept came out from behind its many renderings today, and yes, it is just as funky in person. In fact, it might be more so - the renderings simply can't prepare you for the soapbox-racer proportions of this dinky 1,000-pound open-wheeler. And even though there are but two seats, we're still intrigued by the thought of gaining ingress through the back of the car.

Underneath the slight skin of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, two e-tron electric motors propel the 1+1 with 'powerful' acceleration, which is just what you'd expect from a motorized water strider.

Interestingly, Audi had promised us a hardtop version of the Urban Concept, the Sportback, but we've scoured the German automaker's massive stand and have yet to find it. We'll keep our eyes peeled and let you know if it shows up tomorrow. In the meantime, check out the flyweight Spyder in our gallery.
Continue reading Audi Urban Concept Spyder redefines "Like nothing else"

Audi Urban Concept Spyder redefines "Like nothing else" originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 17:34:00 EST.
The jump from teaser rendering to metal was kind to the new Audi A2 concept, which debuted in Frankfurt today. The sketch looked good, but the real thing is even better, with elegant lines that flow from the headlights and then around the side. Of course, we know that what's really important here is the laser.

Audi acknowledges that the A2 is nothing more than a "concept technology study," which meant that the designers were able to go a bit crazy with this all-electric vehicle. This includes a built-in internet connection, steering and braking by-wire systems and, yes, a rear fog light laser that projects a warning triangle on mist behind the car when visibility is compromised.

Anyone who knows a little something about electric vehicles will tell you that for Audi to pack a 31-kWh lithium-ion battery into a car that weighs just 1,150 kilograms (2,535 lb), some sort of wizardry needed to happen. Sure, only 24 kWh of the pack is usable to give the car a claimed range of 200 km (124 miles) on the European driving cycle, but 31 kWh is a heavy pack. To take weight out of the rest of the car, Audi uses tricks like "cladding technology" to make the 18-inch wheels, dispensed with hinges for the non-existent hood were and put lightweight graphite foam cooling elements behind the grille. The full details are available in the press release after the jump, but the takeaway points remain: laser, lightweight and li-ion. We fear how much this would cost if it were to ever go on sale.
Continue reading Audi A2 Concept is an utterly fantastical electric car, with lasers

Audi A2 Concept is an utterly fantastical electric car, with lasers originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 13:32:00 EST.
Through the end of August, sales of diesel vehicles in the U.S. were up 37.0 percent, compared to the same eight-month period in 2010. Led by the Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Golf TDI, diesel vehicles appear on track to slowly inch their way up the sales charts, though their tally of 8,808 vehicles sold in August still only represents 0.82 percent of total automotive sales. Sigh.

Sales of the segment leader, the Jetta TDI, checked in at 4,800 in August, bringing the diesel sedan's year-to-date total to 36,925. The oil-burning Golf didn't fare nearly as well, but its sales of 914 units in August landed the diesel hatchback safely in second place. In third, with 598 sales, was the diesel-fueled BMW X5 xDrive35d.

Audi just can't seem to get enough all-electric concept cars. After the e-trons of the past few years, Audi is bringing an all-electric A2 concept to the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show later this month. Instead of the quirky style of the Urban Concept, the A2 EV is a compact four-seater designed to add efficient technologies - like adaptive laser lights in the taillights - to maximize range. Think of it as a Smart Forvision that didn't get beamed down from the mothership.

The adaptive lights are what Audi calls "the next phase in LED technology, known as matrix beam." Those LEDs partner with microreflectors to project a bright but apparently non-glaring beam. The A2 concept is all about light, actually, with a dark glass roof that can change to become transparent with the push of a button. Given this, it's clear the focus here isn't really on the powertrain. Still, when you're putting freakin' laser beams into concept cars, maybe sometimes that's Okay.
Audi didn't release any additional information the on the Audi Urban Concept today, but it did let loose a <strike>photo</strike> rendering album of the e-tron-branded concept in coupe and roadster forms that we'll soon get to know in Frankfurt. Powered by two electric motors, the driver and passenger will get to their staggered seating positions through the tailgate, and can let the sun shine in through the sliding canopy once there if they're in the coupe.

We look forward to finding out if all this is as funky in person as it is in print. Until then, there's that bunch of photos to check out in the high-res gallery.
Audi Urban Concept rendered originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 12:55:00 EST.

Diesel-lovin' Audi is slowly, slowly coming to grips with this whole hybrid thing. Earlier this year, the "We're not against hybrids" automaker finally gave out some real information about its hybrid Q5 (after years of teases and killing the program once), and we saw the A6 hybrid at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Today, Audi is making good on the promise it made at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010 when it showed off a thinly disguised hybrid A8 concept.

Due out in 2012 (coincidentally, the 15th anniversary of the Toyota Prius), the A8 hybrid should appeal to customers who crave the German automaker's style and dislike stopping for petrol every third day. The A8 hybrid uses a 2.0 TFSI engine and an electric motor to crank out a peak output of 180 kW (245 horsepower) and 480 Nm (345.03 lb-ft) of torque. Audi says all that power and style will come with 37 mpg (U.S.), which doesn't put the A8 at the top of the hybrid efficiency pack - remember, the A8 is huge - but it beats the pants off of the gas-only A8, which the EPA rates at 18/28/21 (city/highway/combined) mpg.

Even better for late night stealth missions to the golf course, the A8 hybrid can go three kilometers (1.86 miles) and up to 60 km/h (37.28 mph) using nothing but energy stored in its 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. Once the luxury sedan is up to speed, it can move down the highway at speeds of up to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) on battery power, too. These are all good numbers (if only estimations from Audi, for now), and we eagerly await the chance to see how the A8 Hybrid operates in the real world. Until that time, check out the gallery below and read more details in the press release available after the jump.

Continue reading Audi spills the beans on production A8 Hybrid

Audi spills the beans on production A8 Hybrid originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 10:54:00 EST.

Details are starting to emerge on the 2014 Audi A4. According to reports, the A4 will ride on Audi's lightweight MLB Evo platform, enabling the vehicle to weigh 300 pounds less than the current A4. Despite the reduced mass, the next-gen A4 is expected to grow in size to battle the enlarged BMW 3 Series.

Engine options are still unknown, but we'd expect to see the oil-burning TDI continue to be offered and some gasoline engines will surely be available. To improve fuel efficiency, several of the A4 variants will reportedly be equipped with stop-start technology.

If that's not eco-friendly enough, the 2014 A4 is rumored to be offered in plug-in hybrid form, with an electric motor powering the rear axle and a fossil fuel-burning engine spinning the front wheels. Word is the plug-in A4 will be able to travel up to 37 miles on electricity alone. Additionally, this setup will be a through-the-road all-wheel-drive hybrid system dubbed e-Quattro. Sound good?
Audi A4 plug-in hybrid coming in 2014 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 16:59:00 EST.
Following the official release of a handful of sketches and an unofficial reveal of the camo'd prototype, Audi has put out a brief teaser clip of its Urban Concept ahead of its official reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

We still don't have much in the way of details - and the video doesn't provide any new information - but what we do know is that the 1+1 EV is the next in a string of etron-branded concepts, with 21-inch wheels, two electric motors and a lithium-on battery pack. We'll have more in a few week's time, but until then... jump.
Continue reading Audi Urban Concept teased in motion [w/video]

Audi Urban Concept teased in motion [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 11:59:00 EST.

Audi has dished out some details on the quirky electric concept that our spies recently caught in action over in Berlin, Germany. The electric Audi Urban Concept is a 1+1-seat, ultra-lightweight vehicle that Audi says is designed for congested city spaces. The German automaker says the "technical study" will make its official debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Audi Urban Concept is not based on a existing vehicle - its development adheres to strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction. The result, says Audi, is a vehicle with, "no unnecessary weight, and one that concentrates on the pure essence of sporty motion." This diminutive Audi makes extensive use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, which integrates the undercarriage of both seats, to keep weight in check.

The Urban Concept is powered by a pair of e-tron electric motors that get juice from a lithium-ion battery pack. Audi says the ultra-lightweight concept is, "ideal for extended city tours." Hit the jump to see more of the electric Audi Urban Concept.

Continue reading Audi details electric Urban Concept [w/video]

Audi details electric Urban Concept [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 10:05:00 EST. Officially, Audi hasn't confirmed whether or not A6 hybrid will be sold in the U.S., but Car and Driver says that, almost without a doubt, the gas-electric sedan will make its way to the States in 2012. C/D cites the fact that Audi admitted the hybrid powertrain will only be offered in the sedan version of the A6 as a strong indicator of U.S. availability. Audi says the not-for-U.S. consumption A6 wagon won't get the hybrid hardware.

C/D further claims that "reliable sources within Audi" have confirmed the hybrid A6 will be sold in the U.S and that its technology will be identical to the European version, meaning that the U.S.-spec A6 hybrid will be a front-wheel drive vehicle powered by Audi's 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine with a 45-horsepower electric motor and an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox. A modest 1.3 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack completes the hybrid setup.

If C/D's report is accurate, then we'd expect to see the "somewhere north of $55,000" gas-electric A6 to hit U.S. dealerships before the end of 2012. Interested?
