From the looks of these spy shots, Daimler is hard at work on the 2014 Smart ForTwo, giving us our first look next generation of this micro car. With the partnership between Renault and Daimler finally coming to fruition, the Smart will likely share a platform with the Renault Twingo, and it will come in gasoline, diesel and electric variants.

In terms of styling, the test mule doesn't reveal much, but expect the new ForTwo to utilize some of the design cues introduced on recent concept vehicles like the 2011 ForVision Concept and the 2012 For-Us Concept. One thing we can see with this prototype is that the car appears to have gotten a little bigger with boxier proportions closer to the Scion iQ. Thanks to a bolted-on scoop on the rear part of the car's roof, we can tell that the 2014 ForTwo will continue to have its engine mounted in the rear.

For a release date, the production version of the new ForTwo appears to be heading to the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, but we wouldn't be surprised to see another ForTwo-teasing Smart concept later this year.
2014 Smart ForTwo prototype shows itself originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 28 Aug 2012 16:51:00 EST.
Although the split front grille may not be to everyone's liking, by and large the overall shape of the Fisker Karma is what defines it as much as its hybrid propulsion system. The trouble is, packaging two powertrains into one lithe shape penned by the same designer behind the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and the BMW Z8 has left the Karma with little in the way of useable trunk space. That's what prompted Fisker to showcase the Surf concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year.

The Surf takes the four-door Karma's shape and extends its roofline with a hatchback/wagon/shooting brake body style aimed to make the luxury hybrid more versatile. The result isn't what we'd call cavernous, but as any good fundraiser worth his tax receipt book will tell you, every little bit helps.

And so Fisker is reportedly set to put the Surf into production, with the final version slated to debut not at the Geneva Motor Show next week, but at the Paris Auto Salon in September. We'd think Fisker might want to expand the cargo bay a little more before it hits showrooms, but we'll have to wait until the fall to find out.

The shooting brake isn't the only model variant Fisker reportedly has in the pipeline, as reports further indicate plans are afoot to put the Sunset convertible - complete with retractable hard-top also known as the Karma S - into production for debut in Geneva next year.
Fisker to launch production Karma Surf wagon at Paris salon in September originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 08:02:00 EST.
If you're at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show basking in the glory of stunning concepts like the Ford Evos, then you might catch a glimpse of a futuristic e-bicycle from Ford.

Even though Ford is following behind other automakers - Smart, for example - the Dearborn automaker says the E-Bike Concept is the future of electric bicycles. The Ford E-Bike features an aluminum and carbon fiber frame that weighs in at 5.5 pounds, a carbon fiber Giant SLR stem, Selle Italia SLR XC saddle, Mavic Elipse wheels, Shimano Alfine 11-speed internal gear hub and Shimano Rapidfire shifters.

Here's where the E-Bike Concept varies from a conventional bicycle: it's powered by a front-wheel, hub-mounted motor that cranks out 350 watts and features a 9.3 amp-hour lithium-ion battery. Ford lists top speed at 15.5 miles per hour and says the E-Bike offers an impressive range of up to 53 miles.

Ford has made no indication on whether this two-wheeled concept will be given the production green light, but considering all the other firms that now offer electric bicycles, we'd venture to guess that Ford will join the e-bike action soon.
Continue reading Ford E-Bike Concept debuts in Frankfurt

Ford E-Bike Concept debuts in Frankfurt originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 13:50:00 EST.
German transmission specialist Getrag used the floor of the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show to reveal its groundbreaking, dual-clutch transmission for electric-drive vehicles.

Dubbed 2eDCT600, Getrag's two-speed unit is supposedly ideal for pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and range-extended automobiles. Getrag claims the 2eDCT600 can cope with a maximum electric motor input torque of 369 pound-feet and an output torque of up to 4,425 lb-ft.

The German firm touts its 2eDCT600 as a multi-speed solution that gives electric-drive vehicles improved launch capability and an increased top speed. Perhaps most importantly, Getrag claims its dual-clutch unit extends an electric-only vehicle's range by up to ten percent. That's a big number in the EV range game. Follow the jump for full details on Getrag's consumption-reducing gearbox.
Continue reading Getrag reveals two-speed, dual-clutch transmission for electric-drive vehicles

Getrag reveals two-speed, dual-clutch transmission for electric-drive vehicles originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 18 Sep 2011 08:15:00 EST.
The BMW Motottad Concept E is an all-electric emissions-free scooter designed to deliver performance on-par with a 400-500cc commuter motorcycle. The 60-volt concept has a 60-mile range and can be completely recharged from a standard 110-volt outlet in just three hours.

As expected, the front of the scooter is fitted with a traditional telescopic front suspension while the rear features the automaker's signature single-sided swingarm.

The aerodynamic styling is unique, but not over-the-top, with neon green panels emblazoned with the concept's name on the side. The traditional rear-view mirrors are gone. Instead, they have been replaced by twin rear-facing video cameras that project images to twin LCD monitors in the cockpit. In addition to feeding live surrounding traffic information to the driver, the LCD monitors also deliver battery status, range and other essential vehicle information.

We can't help but like this two-passenger eco-scooter. It's hard to argue with something functionally stylish that offers a 60-mile range after a short three-hour charge.
We'd thought we were aware of all the details that make up the extraordinary SLS AMG E-Cell, but when Mercedes-Benz revealed the E-Cell's unique aluminum body shell hanging from the ceiling at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, a bit of never-before-seen black stood out.

According to M-B, that piece is one of the E-Cell's key elements. It's a transmission tunnel made entirely of lightweight carbon-fiber composite that is structurally integrated into the vehicle's aluminum body shell and bonded to it. M-B says the stiff carbon fiber "spine" reduces weight while also serving as a structural, one-piece housing for the gullwing's battery modules.

Here's a SLS AMG E-Cell refresher: the gullwinged electric uses four motor that pump out a combined 525 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque. The E-Cell dashes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a mere 3.7 seconds and, come 2013, the SLS AMG E-Cell will launch in limited quantities. Follow the jump for more details on the E-Cell's tricked-out carbon spine.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz shows off SLS AMG E-Cell's carbon fiber spine

Mercedes-Benz shows off SLS AMG E-Cell's carbon fiber spine originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 16 Sep 2011 07:56:00 EST.
Revamped for 2012, the stylish Seat Exeo has shown the world its fresh new face at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The automaker says the refreshed Exeo has a more stylized front end, a freshened interior and LED daytime running lights. The 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine offers improved fuel efficiency with reduced CO2 emissions, thanks, at least in part, to stop-start technology. Seat says the common-rail, direct-injected, 143-horsepower TDI engine in the base version of the Exeo emits just 129 grams per kilometer of CO2, meaning that the sedan's fuel efficiency rating checks in at an impressive 54.7 miles per gallon (U.S.).

The revised Exeo sedan and wagon were both unveiled in Frankfurt. While the Exeo won't be coming to the States, you can check out Seat's Audi A4 look-alike in our live-from-the-show high-res image gallery.
Continue reading 2012 Seat Exeo 2.0-liter diesel returns remarkable 54.7 mpg

2012 Seat Exeo 2.0-liter diesel returns remarkable 54.7 mpg originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 18:47:00 EST.
We've been teasing the Rimac Automobili Concept One for the last two weeks, and finally got a glimpse of some studio shots of the electric supercar yesterday. Our team at the Frankfurt Motor Show finally turned their lenses on the EV with a ginormous 92-kWh of lithium phosphate battery pack (which we think is the biggest one available in a passenger car, unless you count the mysterious - and burnt - Kolibri pack in the DMB-converted Audi A2) and four individual motors (one for each wheel). When we got a close-up encounter with the car, we noticed a well-designed interior from Pininfarina and Vilner to match the fine exterior.

For more on the technical details, you can read this. We just wanted to show you more pictures with this post.
After years of previews and teases, Volkswagen is eager to show off its new Up! range. To do that, the automaker didn't bring just one version of the compact to the Frankfurt Motor Show - it brought six. The Up! platform is clearly a versatile one, and all six Up! concepts on display attest to that fact. Volkswagen has an Up! for people who enjoy a day spent sailing on the water and for those who prefer their adventures to be a bit more urban.

The six concept Up! varieties are the Buggy Up! (shown above), Up! Azzurra, Cross Up!, GT Up!, Eco Up! and e-Up! The Buggy and Azzurra are designed for those who want to get close to the ocean. The Buggy is clearly a modern take on the classic VW-based kit cars from the 1960s. It's a modern Meyers Manx, or perhaps a riff on the old VW Thing. The Azzurra, on the other hand, also likes the beach but prefers to stay dockside while its occupants take to the sea. Penned by Italian designers Giorgetto Giugiaro and VW design boss Walter de Silva, the Up! Azzurra is a roofless, doorless summer time cruiser that's the perfect land toy for boat lovers.

Volkswagen couldn't go completely doorless with the Up! family, so a few had to cover up while remaining fun. The Cross Up! is a four-door example that applies lifted CUV dynamics to the Up! platform. Those seeking a more enthusiastic driving experience should turn their attention to the GT Up! concept. VW estimates it can push the standard 74-horsepower Up! engine to produce 100 horses for the GT version. Add in the 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler and upgraded exhaust, and you have a sporty Up! designed to add a thrill to your morning commute.

Since the Up! is an affordable compact designed for life in the city, you would expect Volkswagen to add a few versions that up the green quotient. The automaker has done just that with the e-Up! and Eco Up! The "e" in the name of the former alludes to the fact that this vehicle is an all-electric city car with no tailpipe emissions spewing out the back. Power is provided by an 18-kWh battery pack, which will allow the e Up! to go 80 miles on a single charge. The Eco Up! needs fuel to get going, but it eschews a traditional gasoline powerplant for one that burns natural gas and includes a start/stop system and brake regeneration. A 1-liter three-cylinder engine produces 67 horsepower and, when coupled with the BlueMotion start/stop system, achieves a combined fuel consumption figure of just 2.5kg/100km.

Check out the entire Up! family by clicking through the gallery and checking out VW's first Up! promo video after the jump. We would join you, but we have to go find a replacement for our failing exclamation point key.
Continue reading Volkswagen raises a variety of Up! concepts [w/video]

Volkswagen raises a variety of Up! concepts [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 08:00:00 EST.
Before we delve into the details of the RAK e electric concept, let's step back in time with a brief historical primer. The oldest industrial division within General Motors' current portfolio, Opel, started as a sewing machine manufacturer way back in 1862. Evolving to the production of bicycles soon after, Opel's presence in wheeled transportation turned to automobiles in 1899. Now, at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Opel looks to the future with its debut of the ultra-modern RAK e Concept.

Back in 1928, Opel captivated the media with its experimental rocket-powered RAK 2. Its streamlined shape and solid-fuel rocket propulsion system demonstrated Opel's vision of the future. Developed 83 years after the RAK 2, the RAK e tandem 1+1 concept projects Opel's take on personal urban mobility.

As an experimental design and technical platform, the RAK e is a narrow four-wheeler built around a steel space frame. Built with an eye toward inexpensive materials, the RAK e is a lightweight concept (just 838 pounds) presented as a vehicle that Opel says even the youngest of buyers could afford.

Propulsion for the RAK e comes from a 49-horsepower electric motor that draws juice from a 5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Range is listed at up to 62 miles and operating costs are claimed to be only one euro per 100 kilometers ($2.19 per 100 miles).

It still looks a lot like the standard, third-gen Prius, but the just-unveiled production version of 2012 Prius Plug-in has something the gasoline-electric hybrid doesn't: an expected fuel economy of 111.3 miles per gallon equivalent. The extra mpges come from the car's 4.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which offers a 14.3 mile pure-electric range. We have to say, that's an awful precise range estimate.

In any case, Toyota is displaying the car at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and it still looks like the epitome of "green" cars. With a short recharging time (just 1.5 hours) and a potential price tag (after tax incentives) of around $26-$27,000, we think the automaker's goal of selling 16,000 Plug-in Priuses in the U.S. next year will be easily reached. The global sales target is 50,000.

Toyota prepared a lengthy press release about the "greenest, most technically advanced Prius yet," and we've got it available for you after the jump. Yes, we know the release says 134.5 mpg, but those are Imperial gallons. Converting 49 grams of CO2 per kilometer to mpg is where we got the 111.3 mpge. Also, we've got a video of Satoshi Ogiso, the Prius "guru" (aka the senior general manager of Toyota Motor Corporation) talking about the entire Prius Family on the stand after the jump.
Continue reading 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid now offers 111 MPGe

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid now offers 111 MPGe originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 16:23:00 EST.
For diehard fans of the Smart Fortwo, particularly of the Electric Drive version, 2012 ushers in the third-generation of the pint-sized electric two-seater. Aside from a host of upgrades for 2012, the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive gets a very welcome price drop.

Smart says the 2012 Electric Drive checks in at just 16,000 euros ($21,886 U.S. at the current exchange rate) in Germany before VAT (a purchase tax that ranges from 10 to 20 percent in most European countries). Don't get too excited yet, as that low-ball price doesn't include the Fortwo's battery pack, which costs $82 a month to rent from Smart.

Smart has yet to reveal U.S. pricing for the 2012 Fortwo Electric Drive, so we can't be sure if a price drop (or battery leasing) will be applied here in the States, too. Smart says it will start taking reservations for the electric Fortwo in the fourth quarter of 2011.
Not as easily spotted as its Spyder relative, the Audi Urban Concept Sportback more closely maches the renderings we saw before the start of the Frankfurt Motor Show. That's not to say that we were totally prepared for the quirkiness of either version, but at least the Sportback's carbon fiber reinforced plastic body was somewhat known to us.

Under the CFRP, the Sportback and Spyder share the same all-electric powertrain. That means two electric motors with a combined output of 15 kW (20 PS) of continuous power and 47 Nm (34.67 lb-ft) of torque as well as a li-ion battery that has 7.1 kWh of usable energy (total size unknown) and offers a range of 45 miles. Getting from zero to 62 mph (the concept's top speed) takes a gentle 16.9 seconds, which would be fine if Audi ever releases this vehicle for sale in its intended environment: the city. Perhaps even more appropriate for a city getabout, the battery pack can recharge in just an hour from a standard (in Europe) 230-volt household current. If you have access to a 400-volt, three-phase current fast charger, that drops to approximately 20 minutes. Both concept vehicles are also ready with Audi Wireless Charging (AWC) technology, which uses contactless induction from a 3.6 kW primary coil installed into a parking spot, say, to automatically start refilling the battery pack when you pull the car into place. Audi didn't say how long this wireless charging takes, just that it "is comparable to that of other charging technologies."

We're officially grabbing our helmets and ready to go racing. in Frankfurt, Ford has pulled what must have been an unusually creased sheet off of its 2012 Formula Ford racecar, and while the shape is similar to Formula F racers from years past, it somehow appears altogether modern thanks to the angular air inlets and funky, lightweight wheels.

The 2012-spec Formula Ford will power its way into Great Britain's 2012 Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship with 1.6-liter EcoBoost motivation and a sequential six-speed gearbox at the driver's command. While 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque from the production-based engine might not sound like much, the lightweight steel-tube single-seater should have no problem providing thrills for both racer and spectator alike in the many feeder series it will eventually race in. Check it out in our gallery below and learn more about the car in the official press release idling after the jump.
Continue reading 2012 Formula Ford brings EcoBoost to open-wheel racing

2012 Formula Ford brings EcoBoost to open-wheel racing originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 10:00:00 EST.
When Audi unveiled the original e-tron Concept at the last Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, a production version seemed to be nothing more than a glimmer in the very distant future. Two years later, it appears that the automaker has made plenty of progress in bringing an electric-powered R8 into the world.

Yesterday in Frankfurt, Audi revealed a new R8 e-tron "technology demonstrator" that represents something fairly similar to the production model we'll see in the near future. Some unique visual features separate the R8 e-tron from the petrol-powered version, including the carbon fiber vents on the hood and chrome slats in the front grilles and rear bumper. Like the concept, the production version of the car is expected to feature four electric motors sending power to each wheel, with performance targets including 0-60 mph in less than five seconds and a 150 mile range.

You can see the new Audi R8 e-tron prototype in detail in the high-res gallery above.
Audi shows off near-production R8 e-tron prototype originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 09:28:00 EST.
The German aftermarket specialists at Brabus have entered the eco battle with the unveiling of a prototype EV based on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Rather than extracting more power out of the E-Class' gasoline engine, Brabus decided to rip out the gasser and replace it with electric-only hardware.

The prototype gets a suitably subtle and sexy name - the High Performance 4WD Full Electric - with "Performance" referring to the E's impressive 429 horsepower and 2,360 pound-feet of torque and "4WD" implying each wheel is fitted with a Protean electric motor. Lastly, Brabus' prototype packs a monstrous 56-kWh lithium-ion battery pack to provide the juice.

The HP4FE is capable of scooting from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds and can keep on blasting on down the road for up to 217 miles (at a constant speed of 62 mph) before that massive battery pack becomes fully depleted. Brabus says the prototype tops out at 137 mph in Sport mode, or 118 mph in Eco mode.

But being a Brabus, exterior enhancements are a must and besides its slightly modified body, the prototype E-Class sits on 19-inch wheels wrapped in performance rubber. As for price, Brabus says the prototype isn't for sale... yet. Follow the jump for full details on this torque-laden electric machine.
Continue reading Brabus reveals prototype High Performance 4WD Full Electric E-Class

Brabus reveals prototype High Performance 4WD Full Electric E-Class originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 08:59:00 EST.
The sheet has been lovingly lifted from the Rimac Automobili Concept One at the Frankfurt Motor Show and the first official images are now available. As the earlier teasers suggested, this electric supercar looks absolutely, well...super! It's hard to believe that a machine with performance that far outshines anything brought forward by established auto companies has been pulled off by a 23-year-old kid from Croatia.

But then, Mate Rimac is no ordinary guy. While in high school he invented a glove to replace the traditional keyboard and mouse computer interface. He also turned a '86 BMW 3 Series into a mad, drifting racer. These two creations ultimately led him to build a company whose signature car features state-of-the-art electronic controls and performance numbers that easily match the sleek and powerful looks of its carbon-fiber body and betters, on paper at least, just about everything else in production on the planet.

Here's a refresher on those numbers. Two sets of 12,000 rpm, 250 kW liquid-cooled motors with individual controllers and reduction gears offer up 1088 horsepower and 2800 nM (2803 lb-ft) of torque. The 1650-kg (3638-lb) Concept One promises standstill-to-60-miles-per-hour acceleration in 2.8 seconds on its seamless sprint to a computer-limited top speed of 305 km/h (190 mph). Its 600 kilometers (373 miles) of range is provided for by 92 kWhs of lithium phosphate batteries and charging can be achieved in twenty minutes given ample supply of electricity. Production will be limited to 88 units, with deliveries of road vehicles starting in 2013. The first two are sold.

While we expect it may be a while before we get to see footage of this sexy beast on the road (or track), the company has released a video detailing its components and performance. Hit the jump to check it out as well as the press release.

The 2012 Volkswagen Up! production model is finally here. To be made available in several flavors, the go-to vanilla offering is remarkable as much for its meandering gestation as it is for its price: €9,850 for the Move Up! "convenience-oriented model" (about $13,500 U.S., including Germany's costly Value Added Tax). That model will have the 59-horsepower gas engine that slots below the available gas-powered 74-hp engine and 67-horsepower natural-gas engine.

In keeping with the fixed-menu offerings that characterize the small-car segment, there will be a convenience-oriented Up!, High Up!, Up! Black and Up! White models that bring a set number of options to the party. (We! Don't! Know! About! You! But! We're! Getting! Tired! Of! All! This! Ridiculous! Marketspeak! Naming! And! Crazy! Punctuation! - From! You! Too! Mercedes!)

According to VW, an innovative financing plan called AutoCredit2 will roll into overseas dealerships to aid sales of the car, but we don't know anything about that yet. Also, still no word on whether the Up! franchise will make it to North America, but we wouldn't count on it, at least with this generation of products - after all, we're still waiting on something like the next Polo.

So hop on into the gallery of high-res photos for some Up! White and see if it might be worthy of your wily financing schemes.
Continue reading 2012 Volkswagen Up! finally ready for production

2012 Volkswagen Up! finally ready for production originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 18:25:00 EST.
The limited edition Peugeot 508 RXH diesel-electric hybrid has been officially unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Only 30 of the limited edition, through-the-road hybrids will be built, so scoring one may prove incredibly difficult. Peugeot says the limited edition wagons will be sold first-come, first served and the automaker has targeted March of 2012 for the first deliveries.

Priced at £36,000 ($56,912 U.S. at the current exchange rate, but inclusive of the UK's sizeable Value Added Tax), Peugeot says the limited edition 508 RXH features Copper metallic paint, leather and alcantara upholstery, xenon headlamps, heated seats, a hi-fidelity JBL stereo and distinctive 18-inch alloy wheels.

Featuring four-wheel drive thanks to Peugeot's HYbrid4 technology, all 508 RXH wagons come packing the automaker's 2.0-liter HDi diesel engine along with a 28-kilowatt (38-horsepower) electric motor. This system, identical to the one found in Peugeot's 3008 Hybrid4, makes the 508 RXH a so-called "through-the-road" hybrid vehicle, where the two powertrains each move an axle independently. Combined, the diesel-electric hybrid drive unit delivers up to 147 kW (200 horsepower) and cranks out 332 pound-feet of torque.

If you don't fancy a copper-colored CUV, non-limited edition 508 RXH wagons will go on sale in spring of 2012.
Continue reading Limited edition Peugeot 508 RXH on sale now for $56,912

Limited edition Peugeot 508 RXH on sale now for $56,912 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 18:06:00 EST.
The Audi Urban Concept came out from behind its many renderings today, and yes, it is just as funky in person. In fact, it might be more so - the renderings simply can't prepare you for the soapbox-racer proportions of this dinky 1,000-pound open-wheeler. And even though there are but two seats, we're still intrigued by the thought of gaining ingress through the back of the car.

Underneath the slight skin of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, two e-tron electric motors propel the 1+1 with 'powerful' acceleration, which is just what you'd expect from a motorized water strider.

Interestingly, Audi had promised us a hardtop version of the Urban Concept, the Sportback, but we've scoured the German automaker's massive stand and have yet to find it. We'll keep our eyes peeled and let you know if it shows up tomorrow. In the meantime, check out the flyweight Spyder in our gallery.
Continue reading Audi Urban Concept Spyder redefines "Like nothing else"

Audi Urban Concept Spyder redefines "Like nothing else" originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 17:34:00 EST.
