With US monthly sale figures headed back towards the double-digit range, Mitsubishi is once again trying to goose sales of its i electric vehicle (also known as the i-MiEV) with some heavy-duty rebates. The Japanese automaker enacted a $10,000 rebate towards the end of last month and is apparently doing so again, this time offering the rebate until the end of July. That means folks can get an i - dealer willing - for a smidgen under $20,000 before the $7,500 federal tax rebate kicks in.

Mitsubishi sold 588 units of the all-electric model last year and appeared to get a little momentum earlier this year, moving 594 i EVs through February. That may have been helped by lease deals for as low as $69 a month, and sales plummeted to 31 units in March and 127 vehicles in April.

We've asked Mitsubishi for more details on the new $10,000 promotion, but have not yet heard back. We will update this post if we get any more information.

*UPDATE: We heard back from Mitsubishi's Dan Irvin, who said there is no such national deal available (and the original source has taken the information down). Irvin wrote, "The fact is MMNA has no national rebate or i-MiEV price discount, however, some individual Mitsubishi dealers across the country are currently offering extremely attractive incentives to customers to buy or lease an
i-MiEV. Customers should check with their local dealer to see what they're offering."
Mitsubishi brings back $10,000 rebate on i-MiEV electric vehicle *UPDATE originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 13 May 2013 08:05:00 EST.
Mitsubishi is looking to make up for lost ground from some fire-related issues by doubling production of its Outlander Plug-in Hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in Japan, Green Car Reports says.

The Japanese automaker will ramp up to 4,000 Outlander PHEVs a month, up from the 2,000-unit target it set last September. Mitsubishi will consolidate the Outlander PHEV motor and battery installation operations to help speed things up.

The company plans to start selling the Outlander PHEV in the US next year. In March, the company halted Outlander PHEV production because of a melted battery at a Yokohama dealership. Mitsubishi since discovered that the batteries, which are produced by Lithium Energy Japan, are short circuiting from a screening process (since discontinued) that infected the batteries with contaminants.

Lithium Energy Japan is a Mitsubishi joint-venture with GS Yuasa, which makes batteries for the Boeing Dreamliner. That airline model was recently affected by a number of fires recently.
Mitsubishi will double Outlander PHEV production after finding fire cause originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 12 May 2013 16:34:00 EST.
It's a classic car dealer move: offer extra special deals as the monthly calendar winds down and, presto, you've boosted your sales totals. When it comes to the 2012 Mitsubishi i (the current model), something needed to be done, since Mitsubishi only sold 31 examples in March. Towards the end of April, Mitsubishi offered an eye-popping $10,000 in dealer cash on the engine-free hood of the all-electric i (or i-MiEV, as it is also known). With the dealer cash and a federal tax rebate worth up to $7,500, Mitsubishi's Dan Irvin said April was "a good time to buy an i-MiEV." The i starts at $29,125 and shoppers still needed to negotiate with the dealership on final price, of course.

The deal is over now, but when it was still going on, Irvin told Autoblog there was "plenty of inventory to accommodate this promotion." He said he didn't know the number of 2012 i-MiEVs remaining in the US, but the end result was that 127 were sold last month.

Even with the extra money, April i sales did not reach the lofty (as it were) heights of January and February, when 257 and 337 of the Mitsubishi EVs were sold, respectively. The i has been the subject of low, low prices before, including a cell-phone-like lease of $69 a month.
Mitsubishi only sold 127 i electric cars in April despite $10,000 dealer incentive originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 01 May 2013 19:58:00 EST.
Mitsubishi has found the cause of lithium-ion battery problems that caused the Japanese automaker to halt production on its Outlander Plug-in Hybrid in Japan last month.

The batteries, which are made by Lithium Energy Japan, are short circuiting from a screening process that infected the batteries with contaminants. That screening process has been discontinued. Lithium Energy's parent is a Mitsubishi joint-venture with GS Yuasa. That company makes batteries for the Boeing Dreamliner, which also had a number of fires recently. In the meantime, Mitsubishi has notified affected i drivers to stop driving the vehicles, while Outlander PHEV owners have been told to drive only in all-gas mode. Affected vehicles will be recalled next month and Mitsubishi is offering compensation and, if needed, loaner vehicles.

About 4,000 Outlander PHEVs, which went on sale in Japan in late January, and another 150 i all-electric vehicles (known as the i-MiEV overseas) had the problematic batteries, Automotive News reports. Mitsubishi plans to start selling the Outlander PHEV in the US next year.
Mitsubishi finds cause of plug-in battery problems, will recall and fix soon originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 25 Apr 2013 07:59:00 EST.
Mitsubishi continues to cool its heals because of one hot battery. Specifically, the Japanese automaker hasn't found a reason why the lithium-ion batteries in its Outlander plug-in hybrid-electric SUV are overheating and therefore will continue its production moratorium, Automotive News says. The Outlander PHEV's batteries are made by Lithium Energy Japan, which is owned by a joint-venture of Mitsubishi and GS Yuasa. The latter company makes batteries for the Boeing Dreamliner, which sustained a number of fires earlier this year.

The Outlander production stoppage stems from a March 21 incident in which a battery pack in an Outlander PHEV overheated at a Yokohama dealership. At the time, Mitsubishi said drivers should refrain from external charging until the cause was found. Last month, Mitsubishi also disclosed that it was stopping production on the i-MiEV all-electric vehicle because of a battery fire. The company has since restarted production on that model using Toshiba-made batteries.
Mitsubishi extends Outlander PHEV production halt originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 15 Apr 2013 14:03:00 EST.
Last week was a rough one for Mitsubishi and its efforts to broaden its appeal among potential plug-in vehicle buyers. Two fires caused the Japanese automaker to halt production of both the Outlander plug-in hybrid and a version of the all-electric i-MiEV. The two separate incidents - both in Japan - involved plug-in vehicle battery-pack fires and, until the cause is found, production will be suspended, reports Automotive News.

The first fire occurred March 18 in the battery pack of a Mitsubishi i-MiEV (known in the US simply as the i) at the company's Mizushima factory. The pack overheated, causing a 98-minute fire in which no injuries or building damage occurred. The accident may have been caused by what Mitsubishi calls "a change in the manufacturing process of the battery supplier." As a result, the company is calling fleet-vehicle operators with i-MiEVs whose batteries were made under the same process as those that overheated and is working on a possible fix.

Meanwhile, on March 21, a battery pack in Outlander PHEV overheated at a Yokohama dealership. About 80 cells within the battery overheated, damaging one of the three blocks of cells in the battery and causing the unregistered car to not be able to run. Mitsubishi says owners of the Outlander PHEV should hold off on external charging until a further investigation of the cause of the incident is conducted. Mitsubishi says the fire will not delay the plug-in Outlander's US launch and there is no official word if a recall will be required for either vehicle. Mistubishi has sold 4,000 Outlander PHEVs in Japan.

Mitsubishi uses battery cells that have an indirect connection to the fires in the Boeing Dreamliner earlier this year, the batteries that Tesla Motors CEO called "fundamentally unsafe." Mitsubishi't cells come from Lithium Energy Japan, a joint venture between Mitsubishi and GS Yuasa that was started in 2007. GS Yuasa makes the batteries for the airplane, but Boeing says it will not stop testing the Dreamliner in light of these fires.

Mitsubishi's press releases on the incidents are available below.
Continue reading Mitsubishi halts production of i-MiEV, Outlander PHEV after two plug-in car fires

Mitsubishi halts production of i-MiEV, Outlander PHEV after two plug-in car fires originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 29 Mar 2013 19:23:00 EST.
Some automakers are saying that adding a fake engine noise - or some other warning sound - to plug-in vehicles would subtract that "cha-ching" sound from auto dealers cash registers. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and some automakers outside the group say a mandate for artificial noise makers on electric cars could cause fewer people to buy them, Automotive News says.

Electric vehicle makers like Nissan and Mitsubishi have told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that they fear "lower acceptance" of plug-ins that have noise-making systems to help out blind pedestrians. Vehicle makers also say forcing EVs to make noise when they're not moving would make neighborhoods louder and may be disorienting to blind pedestrians.

In January, NHTSA proposed its rules for plug-in noise-making requirements, saying that electrified vehicles be required to emit certain sounds when traveling 17 miles per hour or slower. The per-vehicle costs for these noise-makers has been estimated to be about $30.
Nissan, Mitsubishi tell NHTSA requiring electric vehicles to make noise will turn buyers away originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 20 Mar 2013 08:03:00 EST.
For the average car shopping consumer (such as me), one of the real deal breakers with plug-in electric vehicles has been the cost of the home charger. Sure, they're getting cheaper at Home Depot, but when you're talking about buying the charger and having it installed in your garage, it's around $1,500 to $2,000 extra. What if you could have that cost added to your finance package and monthly payments at the dealership?

That's what AeroVironment just announced at the National Automobile Dealers Association annual convention and expo in Orlando. The electric vehicle charging station maker is now offering a dealer program where new car buyers can purchase an EVSE-RS, Level 2, 240-volt residential charging station with their battery electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, and then finance them together.

AeroVironment is working with Nissan and its dealers on a finance program for the Leaf, and is in talks with other automaker partners, including BMW for the ActiveE and Mitsubishi and the i-MiEV, Tom Carney, director of automotive sales for AeroVironment, told AutoblogGreen.

Dealer finance and insurance departments will be able to offer buyers a variety of lease and loan packages - from three-year to six-year payment periods, Carney said. They're guaranteeing that the charger will installed at the home within four days of purchase, with an expected average of 2.8 days. AeroVironment has already installed over 10,000 residential charging units.

Dealers can also offer various "bumper-to-bumper" warranty options for the chargers that match the financing terms of the vehicle. Chargers bought through the dealer program will be installed by licensed electricians in all 50 states that are certified in EV charger installation. AeroVironment is offering dealers one-on-one and online training as well as access to AeroVironment's home charging displays, window stickers and consumer brochures. Dealers can also set up both Level 2 and DC fast charging stations in their service bays and customer parking areas.
Continue reading AeroViroment now offering all-in-one deal for electric vehicle, charger

AeroViroment now offering all-in-one deal for electric vehicle, charger originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 07 Feb 2013 09:29:00 EST.
In what is likely the largest EV recall ever, Mitsubishi is recalling about 14,700 electric vehicles worldwide because of a braking issue, Reuters reports.

Of the recalled vehicles, about 12,300 are i-MiEVs while 2,400 are Minicab-MiEVs. About 9,000 vehicles are in Europe, and some are badged as PSA Peugeot iON and Citroen C-Zero models, says Reuters. It's not clear if the US version of the i is also affected, but there is not yet a recall notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

The recall stems from a faulty electric brake pump that's supposed to send air to the brake booster, and the repair is said to take about 30 minutes. About 27,000 Mitsubishi i-MiEVs and i models have been sold since the model debuted overseas in mid-2009, meaning that about 45 percent of those vehicles are subject to the recall.

Mitsubishi sold only 588 units of the i in the US last year, fewer than the limited-production Ford Focus Electric. More recently, Consumer Reports reviewed the Mitsubishi and critiqued it for its lack of pep and cheap-looking finishes, among other things.

UPDATE: US-i vehicles are indeed affected, as a new post to the NHTSA website notes. 1,402 i models will need their vacuum pumps replaced, and the details on what to do if you have one of these are available below.
Continue reading Mitsubishi recalling 14,700 i-MiEV, iON, C-Zero electric vehicles [UPDATE]

Mitsubishi recalling 14,700 i-MiEV, iON, C-Zero electric vehicles [UPDATE] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 08:04:00 EST.
O'Brien Mitsubishi, based in Normal, IL, is offering something way outside the norm: an absurdly low lease price - the cheapest we've ever seen - for on an electric vehicle.

AutoblogGreen reader Josh K. could hardly believe what he saw when driving by a rotating banner advertising the a Mitsubishi i-MiEV recently: $69 a month for 24 months. That compares with the official Mitsubishi lease program from last fall, which was $249 a month for three years.

Yes, it sounds too good to be true. So we called the dealership and had the lease offering confirmed. Salesman Scott Lovett explained that, starting January 1, the dealership began running a 24-month lease promotion for the Mitsubishi i ES that gives customers two options:

$69 per month for two years, after which the car is returned. The customer has to pay tax, title and license up front, which Lovett estimated at about $2,100.

$169 per month with no money down, and tax, title and license is rolled into the monthly payment. It's also a 24-month lease program.

About 90 percent of the i lease takers are having Level 2 charging ports installed at their homes. Lovett said the company had leased out about a dozen of these electric cars since the beginning of the year, and was trying to obtain more of them from Mitsubishi. O'Brien Mitsubishi worked with Ally Financial to come up with the extremely affordable lease program. "It's a very small amount to pay," said general manager Ryan Gremore, and this deal will certainly help the dealership hit its goal that Gremore describes as "becoming the world leader in EV sales." When an EV costs less than some cell phone plans, we don't see that being a problem.
Mitsubishi i available for just $69 a month in this outrageous lease originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 22 Jan 2013 19:48:00 EST.
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander is just around the corner, at least in Japan. There, the first plug-in hybrid crossover will go on sale January 24 with an MSRP of between 3,324,000 and 4,297,000 yen (between US$38,800 and $50,200), including Japan's consumption tax. After government incentives, the CUV can be had for the equivalent of around $33,000. While prices are not accurately comparable across borders, the only other plug-in vehicle of similar size, the Toyota RAV4 EV, starts at $49,800, and qualifies for a federal incentive of up to $7,500.

Mitsubishi says the Outlander PHEV can go around up to 37 miles on battery power alone thanks to a 12-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and gets something like 67 km/liter (roughly 157 miles per gallon equivalent) when measured on the Japanese JC08 mode. The CUV uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder MIVEC gas engine and gets 18.6 km/l (44 mpg) when operating as a normal hybrid. There are more details in the press release below.

The vehicle has three drive modes. EV Drive Mode (aka pure electric), Series Hybrid Mode (where the gas engine acts like a generator for the motors), Parallel Hybrid Mode (used at high speeds, where the engine does most of the work moving the CUV, with some assist from the motors). There are also Battery Charge and Battery Save modes. Battery Charge mode is odd in that you can use gasoline to charge the battery, in case coal-powered electricity isn't dirty enough for you.

We first saw the plug-in version of the Outlander at this year's Paris Motor Show. After the Japanese launch, the plug-in Outlander will become available in Europe and North America.
Continue reading Mitsubishi sets Outlander PHEV debut for Jan 24 in Japan

Mitsubishi sets Outlander PHEV debut for Jan 24 in Japan originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 27 Dec 2012 10:09:00 EST.
Trying to do its part to enhance both the smart grid and public safety, Mitsubishi announced last week it will support a smart grid demo project at the University of Southern California (USC) and its Viterbi School of Engineering. Mitsubishi will provide USC with 12 all-electric i vehicles to be used on campus and around the LA basin.

Part of the two-year Smart Grid Living Laboratory Project, the i vehicles will "work to further develop and improve virtually all phases of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to accommodate widespread EV usage in the future." They will do this by helping to simulate a city of around 55,000 people using both plug-in vehicles and other smart grid components. Mitsubishi will also provide "several" Level 2 chargers.

The dean of the USC Viterbi School, Yannis Yortsos, called the 12 vehicles, "a substantial electric vehicle fleet" that will offer "a useful pool of data for technical and behavioral research projects."
Continue reading Mitsubishi, USC partner on smart grid study with 12 i electric vehicles

Mitsubishi, USC partner on smart grid study with 12 i electric vehicles originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 03 Dec 2012 18:03:00 EST.
More seats, fewer dollars.

That's what one Mitsubishi dealer in Oregon is advertising after cutting the price of one of its Mitsubishi i electric vehicles by more than $5,000.

Town & Country Mitsubishi near Portland is advertising what was once the cheapest mass-produced EV in the U.S. at $24,900, according to Green Car Reports. That's about $850 lower than the 2013 Smart ForTwo EV, which announced its pricing earlier this month.

Dealers are trying to spur sales of the four-seat Mitsubishi, which has sold in more-or-less novelty numbers since debuting in the US. Sales topped out at 85 units in May and have been largely in the 30- to 40-unit monthly range since then. Through September, Mitsubishi sold 439 of the EVs in the US. Better than zero, sure, but not as many EVs as Nissan sells in a month.

The Mitsubishi i has a 62 mile single-charge range, about 11 miles less than the Nissan Leaf EV. Smart says the EV gets 87 miles on a charge, but that's on the more generous European-cycle testing.
Oregon dealer prices Mitsubishi i below new Smart EV originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 17:52:00 EST.
Another entrant in the Paris Motor Show has been revealed, as Mitsubishi has announced that it will unveil a plug-in hybrid version of its updated Outlander SUV. According to Mitsubishi, this is the first ever plug-in hybrid SUV and will join a freshened version of the ASX crossover (Outlander Sport over here), and the i-MiEV Evolution electric racecar which competed in the 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

Mitsubishi is apparently into that whole multi-dimensional theory, because it describes the Outlander PHEV as "The best of three worlds: The environmental performance of an electric vehicle (EV), the cursing range of a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) and the on- and off-road performance of an SUV."

Though few will venture the Outlander off the smooth tarmac, it would be very interesting to experience the driving characteristics of the Outlander PHEV in electric mode off the beaten path.

According to Mitsubishi, the powertrain can run in full EV mode, series hybrid mode or parallel hybrid mode. There is no mention of pricing, and although it is set to hit the Japanese market in early 2013, there is no word as to whether this plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander will reach our shores. That was fast enough to place 6th overall and clinch the top spot in the electric class. Congratulations!

Despite a crash on the first day of practice, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV Evolution with driver Hiroshi Masuoka was looking sharp as it crossed the line just 15 seconds behind the electric leader to clinch 2nd EV place with a 10:30.850 time.

Perhaps the most surprising/amazing result of the day was from the HCE Lightning XP12 entry. Driver Elias Anderson took it upon himself to combine a modified F600 chassis from NovaKar with a 240 horsepower electric drivetrain - supplied in part, at least, from Lightning Motorcycles - in the space of a few short months and challenge the big factory teams. His 3rd place 11:00.857 finish gave him the 13th fastest overall spot and plenty of reasons to be very proud of himself.

Michael Bream drove the electrified EV West BMW M3 to a 4th place class finish, just ahead of last year's winner and previous record holder, Ikuo Hanawa in the Yokahama EV Sports Concept HER-02. Beccy Gordon rounded out the battery-powered category in her stripped down Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

Sadly, Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima, favorite to win and fastest in practice, experienced a small fire after the motor in his car apparently failed, ending his effort about a kilometer from the start line. (Hey, it could have been much worse.)

While it's no big surprise, there does seem to be wide disparity between what automakers publicly state about supporting hybrids and electric vehicles, and what they actually deliver. One example is Ford Chairman Bill Ford, who's been evangelizing electrification for Ford's future for a while (see video below and read this for just one example), but then you see the sales figures. Since being launched in January, Ford's first plug-in electric vehicle, the Focus Electric, has only sold 135 units in the U.S. as of July 31. If you include hybrids, Ford's numbers were 17,367 hybrids and EVs, but it's still only a blip on the screen.

Mitsubishi is following a parallel trajectory, with the latest news being the automaker deciding to bring its first hybrid electric vehicle to the market - the Dignity, a luxury hybrid sedan being released first in the Japanese market. The company is taking a cautious approach - one part of that strategy is adding an Infiniti drivetrain. The Dignity is using a long-wheelbase version of the Infiniti M35h, which has a 359-horsepower hybrid drivetrain, coming from a 3.5-liter gasoline V-6 engine paired with an electric motor.

Like its Japan-headquartered competitors, Mitsubishi is a large corporation with its hands in multiple industries - a workforce of 60,000 people in 90 countries serve the automotive, chemical, machinery, and other markets. The brand has been in the U.S. auto market since 1981, but has never achieved impressive sales figures. Mitsubishi has indicated that hybrids and electric vehicles are part of its forward-thinking strategy for market growth. Its plug-in hybrid Outlander is due on the U.S. market in late 2013 or early 2014.

Like Ford and other competitors, production volume, marketing, and dealer distribution have been painfully slow for Mitsubishi. The i (aka i-MiEV in Japan and Europe) has only sold 366 units in the U.S. since its launch at the beginning of this year, with 33 of these EVs sold in July (and now it's being recalled). That's nearly three times the U.S. sales volume of the Ford Focus Electric. So what?
Continue reading Mitsubishi follows colleagues by taking a painfully slow approach with hybrids and EVs

Mitsubishi follows colleagues by taking a painfully slow approach with hybrids and EVs originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 10 Aug 2012 09:54:00 EST.
Despite some popular deals available for limited times and long-distance adventures, the Citroen C-Zero and Peugeot Ion were never big sellers. Now, Mitsubishi has decided that it's not worth it to build the electric vehicles for PSA any more.

Automotive News reports that overall slow sales of the two electric cars - for the first half of 2012, 852 Ions and 935 C-Zeros were sold - mean an indefinite hiatus for the European jellybeans. A Mitsubishi representative told AN that, "This is a matter of PSA adjusting its orders to market demand. ... Our production total is lower than what we had originally hoped for." The Ion and C-Zero are both rebadged versions of the i-MiEV that Mitsubishi makes in Japan.

Christine Jew, senior specialist, product communications, for Mitsubishi Motors North America, told AutoblogGreen that, "Yes, supply to PSA has been temporarily suspended, however production and sales of i-MiEVs around the world continues as usual. Therefore, this does not affect U.S. production of the i-MiEV."
Mitsubishi "temporarily suspends" making electric Peugeot Ion, Citroen C-Zero originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 09 Aug 2012 13:50:00 EST.
A minor but important problem with the sensors in the self-diagnostic software used by the Safety Restraint System (SRS) system in some Mitsubishi i-MiEV models in Canada has led to a recall notice from Transport Canada.

The recall only affects 49 vehicles and is important because the manfunction can cause the airbags to not work. Specifically, since the sensors are incompatible, the SRS warning light can turn on. If, then, the "vehicle were [to] continue being operated with the warning lamp illuminated, the inflatable curtain and side impact airbags may not deploy or the front airbags may deploy late. This could result in an increased risk of injury to an occupant during a crash."

Transport Canada says dealers will replace the sensors with updated versions. We've asked Mitsubishi if this same problem might lead to a recall in the U.S. but have not yet heard back. When we do, we will let you know.

*UPDATE: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has now issued a recall for the same issue in the U.S. 261 vehicles are affected. We had our eye on the Evolution model in particular, as the car was specially developed for the hill climb with a tube-frame chassis, sleek carbon fiber body and an all-wheel-drive system.

Things haven't started quite as Mitsubishi planned, though, with the i-MiEV Evolution crashing during today's second practice session on the lower third of Pikes Peak. The car overshot one of the many hairpins on the course, ending up in a ditch several feet off the road. There's no word on whether the incident was due to a mechanical problem or driver error, but the car looks to be pretty heavily damaged. Fortunately, driver Hiroshi Masuoka, one of Mitsubishi's test drivers and two-time Dakar Rally winner, was unhurt in the accident.

We don't know whether the crew at Mitsubishi will be able to repair the car in time for this weekend's race, but we hope to see it on the mountain come Sunday.
Mitsubishi i-MiEV Evolution crashes on first practice day of Pikes Peak Hill Climb originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 08 Aug 2012 15:44:00 EST. It ain't Yosemite or shark attacks, but we'll take it.

The Discovery Channel has turned its attention to the evolution of the Mitsubishi i electric vehicle. The channel will run an episode titled 'Birth of a Mitsubishi i-MiEV' on August 4. The show, which is promo'd in the awful short video below (just 15 seconds), will run in Canada, though no word on if or when it will run in the U.S., according to Green Car Reports.

So far, the jellybean-shaped car has been more of a novelty than a game-changer in the U.S. Through the first six months of the year, Mitsubishi sold 333 i EVs, though last month's 33 units marked the first time month-over-month sales declined in 2012. The i was rated by the EPA to go 62 miles on a single charge, 12 fewer than the Nissan Leaf.

Mitsubishi debuted the car as the i-MiEV in Japan in 2009.
Continue reading Discovery takes a look at the Mitsubishi i

Discovery takes a look at the Mitsubishi i originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 16:05:00 EST.
